Program Notes Rockin’ Pauken explores a variety of timbres and rhythms on timpani that emulate the sound of rock drumset and bass. The words in the title are a play on the near rhyme between the slang Rockin’ and the German term for timpani–Pauken. The work also presents several technical challenges for the developing timpanist including cross-stickings, playing with different implements simultaneously, playing in different beating spots, tuning changes, and most unusually for the timpani, double strokes.
Performance Notes In bars 9, 18, and 57–59, the dashed line indicates a gradual change from the ordinary beating spot to the center of the head. In measures 10–29, 41–56, and 92–101, X-shaped noteheads are to be played with a brush in the ordinary beating spot, and diamond noteheads are played with one of the hard mallets in the center of the head. Think rock snare drum on the X-shaped notes with marcato accents, and think hi-hat on those without accents. The diamond notes should emulate the sound and feel of a kick drum. Dampening is left to the discretion of the performer; however, three spots should definitely be dampened: the rests in bars 40, 79, and the final measure. From bars 60–69 and 80–90, the left hand plays the notes with stems facing down in the center of the head while the right hand plays the notes with stems facing up in the normal beating spot. In bar 90, the left hand continues to play in the center of the head as in the previous measures.
