PROGRAM NOTES Nimrod, the ninth variation of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, takes its name from a biblical character who was described in the Old Testament as “a great hunter.” Elgar dedicated this movement to his friend and biggest supporter, Augustus J. Jaeger, whose last name in German means “hunter.” Jaeger encouraged Elgar to continue composing despite Elgar’s bouts of depression and general feelings of anxiety towards his life and work. He did this by reminding Elgar of the struggles of Ludwig van Beethoven, whose well-known Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique inspired the main theme of Nimrod.

This variation has not only become a staple in orchestral repertoire but has become popular outside of the concert hall. It is played at funerals, memorial services, and was even played during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Through the efforts of the prolific and enigmatic Michael Charles Smith, this moving and enduring orchestral work is available for the more intimate setting of a marimba quartet.

PERFORMANCE NOTES This arrangement can be performed entirely with rolls or by rolling everthing except eighth notes.

The slur markings are meant to indicate suggested phrasing. These phrases can be altered as performers wish. The mallets used in the performance of this arrangemet should be graduated, with Marimba 1 using the hardest mallets and Marimba 4 using the softest. The overall tone of the mallets should be warm and gentle, with very little attack or sharpness.
