PROGRAM NOTES
As if his whole vocation / Were endless imitation.
This piece chronicles the personal experience of growing up gay in a rural town. Through seven years I went through a cycle of awareness, questioning, and repression before finally coming out and accepting myself. This piece moves through those seven years and reflects on a general anger that comes with attempting to repress myself.
PERFORMANCE NOTES
This piece makes use of a dotted slur (pictured below) to indicate an accelerando and ritardando within the same figure. The tempo should speed up and slow down back to the original tempo. It’s up to the performer how much to speed up by and exactly when to change from accel. to rit. (And not all dotted slurs have to be the same.)
All indicated tempo markings are suggestions and up to the performer’s interpretation. Most of Endless Imitation doesn’t explicitly tell the performer what to feel. Both the emotion and what to convey is left up to the discretion of the performer. For mallet choice, a medium-hard mallet is recommended for all four mallets—something that brings out a good tone from both the low and high ends of the instrument when struck hard.
Throughout the entirety of Endless Imitation, be very expressive and very free.
