PROGRAM NOTES

El Rio Noneco (el REE-oh noh-NEH-koh), The Noneco River, is more of a creek these days. It is located at the edge of a very small town deep in the hot Panamanian countryside. Noneco is often clear and gently flowing—perfect for bathing and washing clothes—before it quietly disappears around the bend. But when the rain falls and comes down from the mountains, Noneco gets agitated, animated, and furious—like the music. But it always calms down and smooths out. Your audience will enjoy a refreshing splash in El Rio Noneco; everyone does!

PERFORMANCE NOTES

Everyone eases into the piece like it is a performance by mistake. All players should be confident in their parts as the group builds to m. 59 when the party breaks out. All non-pitched percussion should form a smooth blanket of constant energy. A little bit of integrated improvisation—listen to those around you—is encouraged. One may consider using sticks on the bongos and congas. Players with the melodic lines should shine when it’s their turn. Finally, there are a couple of unison sections where the group must be tight and in sync: m. 82 and again at m. 102. We wind things down as Noneco gently flows again from m. 103 to the end.
