PROGRAM NOTES Between 1240 and 1579 A.D., local churches and monasteries in England conducted many theatrical performances intended to educate the mostly illiterate people about the mysteries of theology. Coventry was one of many cities where these pageants took place, and it hosted some of the most popular plays of the time. One such play was The Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors, depicting Herod’s slaughter of innocent children (Matt. 2:13-20), from which this carol comes (originally known as “Lully, Lullay�). This arrangement for six players was premiered by the Southeastern University Percussion Ensemble in December 2017.
PERFORMANCE NOTES Vibraphone pedaling is indicated by slur markings. If no slur markings are present, assume the pedal should be down for the full duration of the note. In cases of a held note with a moving note above/below (i.e., mm. 20-21), mallet dampening should be used in order to let each note ring for the written duration. Mallet dampening may otherwise be used in conjunction with pedaling to ensure clarity. Tenuto markings are used to indicate a very slight emphasis. When present on a rolled note, the first part of that note should be brought out slightly (but more than the first stroke of the roll). When used on a non-rolled note, simply add a little weight to that note. Staccato markings are used to indicate that the front end of a rolled note should be articulated clearly. For example, in m. 5, Marimba 2 should clearly strike the D on beat two in order to continue the 8th note ascending line present elsewhere in the ensemble, then immediately continue a normal sustained roll.
