NOTES Named after South Park character Eric Cartman’s favorite snack, Cheezy Poofs dates back to late ‘90s Santa Clara Vanguard. It was written to be SCV’s version of a “shopping spree” exercise—a vehicle for hybrid flam rudiments in a hand-to-hand triplet feel context. It was a core exercise of SCV’s technique program for many years and has since been something of a standard exercise in the greater marching percussion activity.

You can insert different rudiments into the various slots designed for them. The sequence we used to play at SCV was as follows: • straight flam accents (no diddles) • cheeses (or flammed diddles) • flam drags • flam fives The music on the preceding pages is notated with the flam fives version, but you can easily replace any flam five in the music with straight flam accents, cheeses, or flam drags.

I’m continually surprised and humbled by how often this gets played to this day. Enjoy!
