PROGRAM NOTES Beware the Jabberwock is a programmatic piece for percussion that depicts the events in Lewis Carroll’s famous poem Jabberwocky.

The poem tells the tale of an epic battle between a boy and the vicious creature know as the Jabberwock. Originally included in the 1871 novel Through the Looking Glass, Jabberwocky is widely considered one of the greatest examples of the “literary nonsense” genre.

Carroll’s creative use of wordplay in the poem has become so ingrained in pop culture that many words such as chortled, galumphing, and vorpal have become part of the English language. Alice in Wonderland remains Carroll’s best-known work which has stayed in print since it was originally published in 1865.

PERFORMANCE NOTES • The Percussion 4 and 5 parts are optional.

• Any combination of xylophone and marimba can be used (for example, 2 marimbas, 2 xylophones, or one of each).

If using two xylophones, it is recommended to play the second part (labeled “marimba”) down an octave to match the transposition of the first part. Conversely, if using two marimbas, play the first part (labeled “xylophone”) up an octave to match the transposition of the second part.

• 2 toms (small and medium size) can be substituted for the two congas in the Percussion 3 part.

• Granite blocks, woodblocks, or 3 jam blocks can be substituted for the temple blocks in the Percussion 4 part.

• If needed, Percussion 4 and 5 can share one single suspended cymbal.

• The tambourine should be a mounted “drumset” tambourine and be played with sticks.

• The triangle should be hung with a triangle clip in order to facilitate transitions to other instruments.

• There are several possibilities for the horizontal bass drum in the Percussion 2 part. A mounted drumset bass drum or marching bass drum works great. If you are so inclined, there are several companies that sell adjustable legs for this purpose. If none of these are accessible, then a dampened concert bass drum will work as well.

The following implements are recommend for the non-pitched percussion parts: Percussion 1 - drumsticks Percussion 2 - “swizzle sticks’’ or “multi-mallet” Percussion 3 - “swizzle sticks’’ or “multi-mallet” Percussion 4 - hard rubber or felt mallet Percussion 5 - yarn mallet for suspended cymbal rolls If desired, the poem may be narrated along with the live performance, and it is suggested that the narrator be sufficiently amplified. Throughout the score, cues are given for the beginning of each stanza.

The director should take the time to familiarize the performers with the original poem as well as the importance of Lewis Carroll’s literary contributions. It would be great to facilitate discussions regarding Carroll’s use of wordplay as well as possible meanings and interpretations of various “nonsense” words. It is my hope that pairing a piece of music with this classic work will not only give the music greater depth and meaning but foster an appreciation and desire to investigate other great works outside the world of percussion music.
