Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A Major, D.959, Mvt. II. Andantino, originally written for solo piano, is an expressively diverse piece requiring virtuosic playing abilities. This arrangement for two mallet players opens with a hauntingly beautiful section that calls for a high level of expression and sensitivity. From there, an inquisitive transition features the first marimbist, as the second player offers harmonic support on the vibraphone. The third section presents both high technical and musical demands on each player as detailed tempo fluctuation gives the music both energy and forward motion, while remaining true to the original intent of the piece. Finally, a “coda” of sorts brings this arrangement to a solemn end.

The musical and technical demands of this arrangement make it appealing and appropriate for undergraduate or advanced high school music students.

Given its original nature as an expressive piano solo, it is important for both performers to have a strong understanding of each other’s parts and how they interact. Strong visual communication and a unified musical approach will be crucial to a successful performance.
