BACK AND better than ever...

Well, we are back. And by “we,” I mean Taos News, Taos artists and Taos festivals.

Of course, COVID is doing its best to derail us, as it did last year, but we will persevere. We can remain safe and responsible and still bring back the fall festivals that make Taos one of the premier art destinations in the world.

Just keep in mind that COVID is still out there, so all of the festival times and dates in this issue of Fall Festivals are somewhat fluid.

Make sure to check online before purchasing tickets or heading out to any of the events.

Okay. Now that the obligatory COVID talk is out of the way, let’s move on to something more positive: the 2021 Fall Festivals!

This year is going to be something special as artists unveil new pieces, organizers look to make impressive returns, studios fling open their doors once more and art lovers hit the streets after the long quarantine.

Everything from the Taos Wool Festival, to the Red River Folk Festival, to the mother-of-them-all, the Taos Fall Arts Festival, are back and ready to impress. Plus, we have a sneak peak at what Taos Art School has on tap for this year, and much more.

Homeostasis is a speculative interactive visual experience featured at PASEO 2021. It is a metaphorical representation of human interference with data interpretations. The animated artwork is generated in real-time using a dataset containing cumulative changes in sea level for the world’s oceans since 1880.

The viewer can manipulate the data through a unique interactive vapor cloud that also modulates the generative process, providing a natural flow and rhythm to digital motion. PARTY (SAFELY) TIME! RESTRICTIONS DON’T MEAN THE FUN HAS TO END

MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING ARE BACK, for now. As COVID cases continue to rise, the Town of Taos opted to take proactive measures against the virus and implemented new safety protocols for businesses, outdoors gatherings, and (most importantly) public events.

Holy Cross Medical Center Emergency Manager David Elliot told Taos News reporter Will Hooper that it is imperative Taos remain proactive in order to prevent the Delta and Lambda variants of the virus from infecting the unvaccinated, particularly children.

“It's on Taos to lead the way again, as they have been, on keeping people safe,” said Elliot, Holy Cross stands ready to expand or create new testing options as needed.”

So what does the new measure, which went into effect Aug. 20 mean for you? Well here are some of the key points:

BB Events are not canceled (as of print time), but organizers must present a safety plan to the Town Council in order to proceed.

BB All nonessential town programs with “significant interaction with residents or groups from outside the state or region” will be cancelled, and all town facilities with a high rate of outsider interaction must be monitored and implement strict safety and sanitary measures.

BB Aside from enforcing new public health measures, the resolution sets up an emergency account to address public safety needs, such as providing masks, hand sanitizer, public advertising and more.

BB It also authorizes the mayor and town government to apply for anticipated federal assistance “for either preventive measures

or to assist individuals or businesses that may be impacted by the pandemic or that may provide resiliency measures against future public health and economic threats.”

BB The council agreed to meet weekly to revisit the order and make any changes deemed necessary moving forward.

YES! Events are still going to happen, but safety measures will need to be strictly enforced. So get out there and enjoy Taos and all of the beauty it has to offer, but remember to stay safe and protect your fellow Taoseños.

“Transformations.” That’s the theme of this year’s Paseo festival, which will take place Sept. 17 and 18.

Artists from around the country will come together to create, “A series of immersive and participatory art installations that will contemplate the changes brought about by the past year and a half, and celebrate our coming back together as a community,” according to a news release.

The festival will feature more than 22 works, ranging from low-tech to new media, united by their active engagement with the public and with place. Installations can be found on the bare adobe walls of Taos or illuminating the open spaces of Kit Carson Park.

Paraluna is a giant, spinning disc of LEDs. Classical music plays from speakers on the ground while choreographed animated patterns are displayed on the disc above. The disc is held up by a boom lift, allowing the disc to be raised, lowered, and tilted, to dramatic effect.

Face Forward is a 12-foot-tall robotic sculpture of a human face. Made primarily of aluminum strips, the sculpture’s moving parts are controlled by 12 separate joysticks.

It is, therefore, necessary for onlookers to work together in order to create recognizable facial expressions with the sculpture.

The Paseo’s website states, “The Paseo Project’s mission is to transform art through community and community through art.” In addition to The Paseo Project’s annual outdoor art festival in Historic Downtown Taos, they also host several collaborative community projects each year, and a socially-engaged artist-inresidence program.

From humble beginnings in 2014, this two-day free event is storming back after a long layoff do to COVID. Because of the circumstances, many of the submitted installations will be from artists who presented their work for the 2020 festival before it was cancelled.

22ND ANNIVERSARY | MULTIPLE VENUES Back for its 22nd anniversary the SOMOS Storytelling Festival is looking to highlight Taos’ amazing history with spoken word.

The inaugural festival in 1999, held in a tent in Kit Carson Park over three days, has evolved into a world famous festival with the main event on Saturday evening at the Taos Center for the Arts; auxiliary programs take place at SOMOS, local bars and other venues (including Taos Mesa Brewing Tap Room and other nearby restaurants).

Participants will be treated to a StorySLAM (with first-, second-, and third-place winners—the first-place winner performing onstage at the TCA finale), a Story Swap (free and hosted by a member of Storytellers of New Mexico), a Children’s Concert (for children of all ages), Storytelling-in-theSchools and an adult storytelling workshop presented by the headliner storyteller.

The Dixon Studio Tour is one of the oldest continuously run studio tours in the state. Dixon, nestled in the Embudo Valley in Northern New Mexico where the Río Embudo flows into the Río Grande, has long been known for its rich Native American and Hispanic heritage, productive farm lands and pastoral beauty. During the last 30+ years many artists moved to the valley to pursue their artistic talent and a simpler way of life.

The Dixon Studio Tour is a cooperative effort with the various artists performing all of the jobs, from preparing the map to painting signs as well as coordinating the whole event.

The local community has also been included with the formation of “The Mercado” which takes place at the public school and features many homegrown an“Collected Works” show, features an outstanding piece of work by each of the artists on the tour.

The Mother of all Taos Art Festivals is Back TAOS FALL ARTS FESTIVAL 2021

AFTER A YEAR'S HIATUS, the 46th Annual Taos Fall Arts Festival returns in 2021, Sept. 24-Oct. 3. The Taos Fall Arts Open exhibition will take place in the Guadalupe Parish Gym, 205 Don Fernando Street, a block west of the Taos Plaza.

The festival will reprise the 2020 theme Return to the Earth, Sky, Water/ Regresso a la Tierra, Agua, Cielo, chosen in 2020 by the Taos arts consortium to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the return of Blue Lake to Taos Pueblo and the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The exhibition is open to all artists residing in Taos or exhibiting work in a Taos art gallery. The exhibition is open, unjuried and accepts all media. Again this year the Fall Arts Festival celebrates the artistic achievements of some extraordinary artists with recognition and monetary awards. These include awards for the poster artist,

lifetime achievement, visionary artists and Kids Give Back.

The poster for 2020/2021 was created by Jonathan Warm Day Coming of Taos Pueblo. His painting, A Place of Stories, depicts a night scene at Taos Pueblo that clearly speaks to the theme, as well as the spirit of the pueblo and its people. Warm Day Coming says he is a self-taught artist introduced to the arts through his mother, Eva Marabal, an accomplished artist and illustrator in her own right.

Warm Day Coming remains a resident of Taos Pueblo and was lucky to have grown up when aspects of traditional life were still in practice. His paintings tell stories bringing the Taos Pueblo life and culture alive with skill, rich color and sensitivity. His work is widely collected, and in addition to painting, Warm Day Coming has written and illustrated several books.

The recipient of the Charles R. Strong Lifetime Achievement Award this year is the sculptor John Suazo, also of Taos Pueblo.

A spiritual man, Suazo says, “I believe all things possess life and spirits that communicate, even stone that has witnessed so many things in its lifetime from its beginning to transformations brought about by wind and rain...”

A lot of his work also involves stories that he heard from his grandparents and elders. He believes that there is a spiritual quality to Native work that makes people want to connect with it.

A former student of Chiricahua Apache sculptor Allan Houser, Suazo works in a variety of stones. His work is exhibited in galleries and museums across the country and internationally.

The Martin Foundation for the Arts Visionary Artist award is an affirmation for actively working and exhibiting

JOHN SUAZO Charles R. Strong Lifetime Achievement Award artists who contribute to and invigorate the growth of the living art community in Taos: artists whose works innovate, challenge, and bridge the boundary between the traditional and the cuttingedge. In creating their own paradigms, they bring generations together through inventiveness and originality combined with respect for the roots of this historic art colony.

The first 2021 Visionary Award recipient is Agnes Chavez. She is an interdisciplinary artist, educator and founder of the STEMarts Lab whose work integrates art, science and technology as tools for social and environmental change. She uses data

visualization, light and sound to create immersive and educational sci-art experiences that seek balance between nature and technology. Chavez collaborates with scientists to raise awareness to the importance of scientific literacy to understand the world around us and become informed global citizens.

In 2019, she completed Fluidic Data, a collaborative permanent installation at CERN, Geneva, which visualizes data from the Large Hadron Collider.

Chavez works with Copolyester, fiber optics, projector, Openframework code and microalgae. She will exhibit a large, immersive installation in this year's festival.

DeAnna Autumn Leaf Suazo is also a recipient of the 2021 Visionary Award. She says her “work is inspired by the cultural traditions of my Pueblo and Navajo heritage. I paint and draw what I've seen growing up around Taos Pueblo and the Navajo Nation.

I incorporate a mixture of styles into each piece I create. . . I use my art to inform my audience about Indigenous resilience.” Suazo was born and raised in Taos. She attends the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, and her work has been exhibited across

New Mexico and other prestigious national venues. This year, Suazo was nominated as a SITE Santa Fe Scholar.

The Kids Give Back award recognizes the next generation of artists and their mentors. An early recipient of the 2021 award was given to the Harwood Museum of Art for an installation of origami cranes created by the kids under the mentorship of Taos artist Izumi Yokohama.

Awards for Best of Show and Honorable Mentions, chosen by juror Albert Handell will be given at the opening reception, Friday, Sept. 24. For a period of 15 years, 1960-1975, Albert Handell’s pastels were included in every book published on pastels in the U.S.A. In 1987 The Pastel Society of America elected him into the Pastel Hall of Fame, making him one of three living artists so honored. The pastels of Albert Handell enjoy an international reputation. He is known nationwide and abroad for his painting workshops.

TAOS FALL ARTS FESTIVAL 2021 MUST-SEE TFAF SATELLITE EVENTS

BLACK & WHITE “I work in color sometimes, but I guess the images I most connect to, historically speaking, are in black and white. I see more in black and white – I like the abstraction of it,” said Mary Ellen Mark, and she was not alone among photographers in preferring to work in those two basic outcasts of the color spectrum.

Ansel Adams, Elliot Erwitt, Robert Frank, and Martin Parr were others who found in black and white (and the almost infinite range of grays in between) the most powerful means of expressing their individual visions.

Photographers were not the only artists to prefer a reduced palette. Henri Matisse called black “the queen of all colors.”

Abstract Expressionist painter Franz Kline made his name with canvases composed exclusively of slashing black brushwork against a white ground. In 2017, curators at the National Gallery in London assembled more than 50 painted objects for a show dedicated to artists working in black and white over a 700-year span of time. As they noted, “Painters reduce their color palette for many reasons, but mainly as a way of focusing the viewer’s attention on a particular subject, concept or technique. It can be very freeing—without the complexities of working in color, you can experiment with form, texture, mark making, and symbolic meaning.”

The seven artists participating in “BLACK & WHITE” all have disparate reasons for working with those “hues,” which physicists do not count as colors at all because they do not have specific wavelengths. Printmaker Jane Ellen Burke

calls black and white “elemental, the starting point of learning that helps the eye discern shapes and lines and dimensions without the distraction of color.” Melissa Kennelly says of her drawings in the show that “shades of gray create emotional movement in me and in my work. The simple act of moving bits of charcoal across soft white paper is a pipeline to complex emotion.” Photographer Kathleen Brennan, who started her career 50 years ago in black and white, says the recent prints feel like “coming full circle.”

And painter Brian Shields notes that working in black and white offers “serendipity without embellishments.”

All the artists in “BLACK & WHITE” turn to traditional mediums — painting, printmaking, drawing, and photography — but Larry Bell, long affiliated with the California Light and Space Movement, uses the process he pioneered for his iconic cube sculptures of the 1960s to the present to create “vapor drawings” through similar means, exposing sheets of rag paper to electrical currents inside a vacuum chamber.

Lesser known are his bronze sculptures based on gestural figurative drawings—the only vaguely representational works in Bell’s oeuvre.

Says the show’s organizer about the artists selected for the intimate space of her Reed Street Studio E, TJ Mabrey: “Each had an interesting, individual take on the possibilities of black and white, all are based in Taos, and the studio offers the perfect environment for an informal dialogue among the different artists. Larry Bell adds, “See them in their studios. That’s where you’ll see their best work.”

OUTSIDE THE LINES A group exhibit by 11 well-established Taos artists, “Outside the Lines” will again be hosted as a Satellite Show of the Taos Fall Arts Festival 2021, Sept. 24 – Oct. 3 at Bareiss Gallery.

The group, known as the Curious Artists, evolved when art seminars at UNM-Taos ended, and the participating artists continued meeting informally to discuss art history, current art events, and techniques; to share new ideas and new work with the other artists; and to receive feedback in a non-judgmental form of critique learned in the seminars. This social interaction and communication was a nurturing stimulant to their curiosity and creativity and has continued.

The participating artists are Jane Ellen Burke, Dora Dillistone, Jan Dorris, Donna Dufresne, Dianne Frost, TJ Mabrey, Marcia Oliver, Robert Parker, Brian Shields, Jameson Wells, and Barbara Zaring.

“Outside the Lines” will open Sept. 24, 4-6 p.m. and remain open each day, 1-5 p.m., through Oct. 3.

The silver screen is once again lighting up (virtually) in Taos thanks to the efforts of the Mountainfilm Festival, Taos Milagro Rotary and the Taos Center for the Arts.

“Mountainfilm on Tour brings a selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed and incredibly inspiring documentary films curated from the Mountainfilm festival in Telluride, Colorado.

The tour will soon visit Taos on Oct. 15 and 16 with films that explore themes connected to Mountainfilm's mission of using the power of film, art and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world,” said event organizers in a news release.

The Taos Milagro Rotary will soon bring a virtual film event to Taos to raise funds for their youth programs and their popular literacy, book and reading programs.

"We're thrilled to bring the community together for two exciting days of powerful films," said Yale Jones, Rotary representative.

t is commonly said that anyone wanting to be considered for citizenship in this country should not list his chosen profession as doctor or lawyer because there is already a glut of them in the United States.

If an applicant wants to attract the attention of the American immigration bureau though, he should try filing his special talent as ‘sheep herder’ and, there’s a better chance that he will be moved to the top of the list of those being considered. The United States is in dire need of sheep herders, especially in the Southwestern States from Texas to Wyoming. It is a skill which has declined steadily throughout last

few decades and even more recently when everything is automated and digital.

After a year's hiatus, the 46th Annual Taos Fall Arts Festival returns in 2021, Sept. 24-Oct. 3. The Taos Fall Arts Festival Open exhibition takes place in the Guadalupe Parish Gym, 205 Don Fernando Street, a block west of the Taos Plaza.

The 2021 festival will reprise the 2020 theme Return to the Earth, Sky, Water / Regresso a la Tierra, Agua, Cielo, chosen in 2020 by the Taos arts consortium to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the return of Blue Lake to Taos Pueblo and the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The exhibition is open to all artists residing in Taos or exhibiting work in a Taos art gallery. The exhibition is open, unjuried and accepts all media. Artist

Learning art THAT TRANSCENDS TIME The Taos Art School opens its door to students for 2021, but gives them a look into the world of the past.

Taos Art School (TAS) has become one of the premier art schools in the country for landscape painting, creativity workshops, and beginners classes. Though COVID has put a bit of a damper on the school’s plans, the staff and administrators are still planning on an exciting year.

Courses on creativity, field trips to Canyon de Chellly and the Four Corners area for plein air painting and photography, equine sculpture, even the Artist in the Kitchen featuring an appreciation of Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe are all on tap this season.

Here is a look at some of the workshops, classes, and adventures to be found at the Taos Art School.

CREATIVE EXPEDITIONS CANYON DE CHELLY EXPEDITION

Canyon de Chelly, in Northeastern Arizona is a breathtaking site in the heart of the Navajo Nation. There are: Rock Arches and Spires, mysterious Petroglyphs and Rock Art; and multi-storied Anasazi Ruins.

Most of the Canyon is restricted access, but TAS uses Navajo guides, as well as securing all necessary permits, so participants will be able to access all areas as a group.

Sheer Rock Walls towering above ancient cottonwood trees; the Bluest of Skies mirrored in the murmuring stream that runs the length of the canyon; and Navajo Hogans and cornfields dotting the canyon floor, all are readily available as inspiration. Meals will be home-cooked on site and will be fresh, hearty and delicious. The schedule calls for awakening participants with the sweet smells of a full breakfast and strong coffee.

THE GEORGIA O'KEEFFE MUSEUM SANTA FE

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened to the public in July 1997, 11 years after her death. Since then, the Museum has welcomed more than 1,300,000 visitors from all over the world.The Museum's permanent collection of over 130 O'Keeffe paintings, drawings, and sculpture is the largest in the world.

PLEIN AIR PAINTING WORKSHOP IN GEORGIA O'KEEFFE'S BACK YARD

Being able to paint your own interpretation of the landscape is what makes it fun! Our job is not to take dictation from nature, faithfully recording details. Boring! We want to learn to interpret what we find there.

To accomplish this we first need to know how to “see” properly, and then to use a simple process that allows us to create an expressive design that brings out our own intent. These two skills are the basis for having more fun painting. The good news is, they are not primarily dependent upon how well you draw, or handle paint! Our technical skills improve as we more clearly understand how to “see” properly, and use the language of expressive design.

This workshop will focus on helping early to intermediate painters to observe nature with a “painter’s eye”, and then to create their own personal interpretation of the landscape by using an easy to understand process. We’ll give special attention to three topics that will dramatically raise your interpretive abilities: “The Harmonizing Elements of Light”, “The Transforming Power of Notan”, and “The Freeing Effect of Color Temperature”. This is not a how-topaint-like-me workshop. I’ve found that the all-important fun-factor goes up as we get a handle on “seeing” properly and understanding how to create our own interpretation of the landscape.

This is a hands-on experience. You will join a small group of like-minded people as we enjoy the beauty and taste of food lovingly prepared, gathered from its source, inspired by Artists. Enjoy a private tour of Georgia O’Keeffe’s Kitchen and Garden. Have lunch at a local vineyard to sample New Mexico wines. Explore a local farmer’s market to select fresh ingredients and savor

the visual delights of a Fall Harvest Cornucopia. Spend time in a Kitchen on 2 days learning to create wonderful dishes and shared community. Visit local Organic Gardens, Farms, and Greenhouses. Share a picnic along the Mighty Rio Grande river. Meet locals who are passionate about the food they grow & cook. There are few places in the world that can inspire so much art and expression through its endless vistas and open landscapes. The expansive sky overhead perfectly encapsulates the possibilities and pleasures of Taos art.

For the past 28 years the Taos Chamber Music Group has relished that pleasure and those possibilities and shared them with our community by presenting the imaginative and inspirational performances for which it has become known.

Music-loving Taoseños know that our little community gets some pretty big musical acts. Despite COVID, this year is no exception. Of course, there are also plenty of great unknown, up-and-coming artists to check out as well.

“Programs often reflect the beauty of our surroundings as well as the unique cultural diversity of the Taos area, earning TCMG a reputation as one of Northern New Mexico's most innovative and successful music series,” group organizers said in a release.

In the past, TCMG has always tried to branch out from the traditional classical music that has come to define chamber music. Its varied repertoire spans Baroque to the Contemporary and has combined classical masterpieces with lesserknown and contemporary chamber music works, including compositions

by Latin American, Spanish, Native American, Baltic, Middle Eastern, women and jazz composers.

This year, TCMG has commissioned new pieces, been joined by composers-in-residence, and collaborated with writers, poets, dancers, artists, filmmakers, photographers and music historians.

Music from Angel Fire is celebrating its 37th season in 2021. From Aug. 20 to Sept. 4, all are invited to discover exceptional music and more in Northern New Mexico. There will be concerts in Angel Fire, Taos, Raton and Las Vegas. Watch for information on concerts and make plans to attend opening night in Angel Fire on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021.

Music from Angel Fire was founded in 1983 by a group of chamber music-loving friends and families in Angel Fire and Taos, who were inspired to bring chamber music to the region on an annual basis.

In 1984, Ida Kavafian was invited to serve as artistic director, a position she maintained through September 2019. Under Kavafian’s tenure, Music from Angel Fire has won a place on the national stage with its Composer-in-Residence Program (1988), Young Composer-in Residence (2005), Music in Schools (2000), and a visual artists program that brings the places and spaces of New Mexico to the annual festival.

In 2021, Music from Angel Fire continues its composer-in-residence program with a new work by cellist Paul Wiancko, sponsored by the Bruce and Hilde Howden Memorial Trust.

It isn’t only the scenery, the natural light, the blended cultures and the galleries of Northern New Mexico that are head-turners. Taos and its environs are home to a number of distinctive fall events, here are some of our favorites.

Glam Trash Fashion Show OCT. 2 | 5-6:30 P.M. TAOS PLAZA

The Glam Trash Fashion Show is a free public art event featuring a runway contest of recycled wearable art.

After taking 2020 off because—well, you know—the glitter-filled extravaganza takes to the runway for the 18th show that features handmade fashions made from recycled materials. Contestants sashay to the music of a live band in a glitter filled, smile inducing, all ages celebration of recycling, fashion and creativity. The runway’s return to the Historic Taos Plaza happens thanks to The Town of Taos, Art for the Heart, Seconds Eco Store and the creative efforts of Nicole Kowalski, Jean Nichols and Sara Basehart.

The Glam Trash Fashion Show has been a Taos favorite since its launch by Nicole Kowalski at the Martinez Hacienda in 2001. Expanding to the Stables Gallery courtyard for many years, the ever growing crowd soon needed a larger venue. Its first time on the historic Taos Plaza was in 2012. It has swaggered through the John Dunn House Shops, and promenaded on the cobblestones behind the Old County Courthouse and is returning this year to the heart of Taos, the historic Taos Plaza for 2021.

Arte de Descartes XXI THROUGH SEPT. 6

Melissa Larson’s Arte de Descartes (“art from discards”) is a juried exhibition put on annually through her Taos nonprofit Wholly Rags.

This year marks the 21st annual recycled art show. Plastics, bottle caps, worn yarn, weathered wood — you name it and artists will create with it.

Taos Halloween Festival

Many Taoseños know Larson for her wizardry with textiles and recycled materials. She has also introduced hundreds of Taos youth to sewing and quilting. The mission of Wholly Rags is “To piece together and rethread the fabric of our community by gathering the cloth of the past to conserve the culture of the future.”

“We’re trying to hold onto this old material to make way so there is always some material so people can sew. The cloth can get lost.

If it goes in the landfill that’s the end of it,” Larson says. “That’s why we have to conserve the material. It can turn into trash. We don’t want it to do that. It can be made into art, and beauty and fun.”

As of print time, there was no word yet on the fate of the beloved Dia de los Muertos celebration in Taos, but that doesn’t mean the community isn’t going to celebrate.

Larson and the participating Arte de Descartes artists apply that sentiment to every piece they create, no matter the scrap.

Arte de Descartes is on display at Stables Art Gallery at Taos Center for the Arts, 133 Paseo del Pueblo Norte, Taos.

‘Universal Elements’ NeoRio 2021 DATE TBA

NeoRio is an annual outdoor, contemporary art event and project. It is a call to the public to explore the outcomes and experiences of artists, scholars, local experts and youth investigating and creating new works on natural world themes. Created as a platform for innovative artists, NeoRio provides opportunities for cross-pollination between artists, scholars in other fields, conservationists, and members of the public and local communities interested in exploring “Place” and protecting and celebrating our wild lands and waters. The event took place outdoors at Wild Rivers, in the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument from 2009 – 2019 in collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management’s Taos Field Office.

The Town of Taos Community Events, Taos Historic District Merchants along with Taos Milagro Rotary Club and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps are hosting a huge Children’s Halloween event for children of all ages and their families.

On Oct. 31, from 3-6 p.m., the ghoulish fun will be spilled out from the Taos Plaza over to Teresina Lane, to Juan Largo Lane, slithering its way to the John Dunn Shops and Bent Street. The event will provide the children of Taos with a fun, safe and supervised Halloween.

In 2021 NeoRio is being reinvented for the world we live in today in response to the global pandemic. NeoRio is organized by us, LEAP (Land, Experience and Art of Place), in collaboration with a variety of other organizations and volunteers.

Merchants from all around the

Taos Historic District (Taos Plaza, Teresina Lane, Juan Largo Lane, John Dunn Shops and Bent Street) will be handing out treats to trick-or-treaters. Local businesses, organizations and church groups will provide decorated “trunks” full of treats for trick-or-treating and various carnival games with prizes.

The Town of Taos and the business community are excited to be hosting the annual costume contest for children ages 1 to 12 years old, teens, families and pets. Prizes will be awarded to the child, teen, family or pet with the Best Costumes.

Judges will be roaming throughout the Taos Plaza from 4-5 p.m. No registration needed. This will allow everyone attending the event a chance to be part of the contest.

The judges will be wearing a sash labeled “Costume Judge” and will award the winners.

Bull-of-the-Woods Trail Race in Taos Ski Valley returns for its fifth year! In 2021, organizers will host a half-marathon and a marathon. For all the hardcore marathoners out there, this race will take you 12,481 feet to the top of Kachina Peak. But you won’t be there long, because you will then head downhill to Fraser Peak (12,168 feet.) Peggy McGiven lives to paint. In fact, just ask her. She will tell you she can’t remember a time that she wasn’t painting. She has tried every medium and technique, but there has always been a wavy line of connection between then and now. McGivern began with abstraction when she lived with her two children in Manchester, England, followed by 3-dimensional work in the '80s. In the '90s, she moved to a more traditional style for a short time but found it did not challenge her enough. Ultimately, she reached back to her roots, working on abstracting her narrative. This retrospective will take viewers on a journey along Peggy’s artistic path.

The festival will feature more than 22 works, ranging from low-tech to new media, united by their active engagement with the public and with place, whether projecting on Taos’s adobe walls or lighting up Kit Carson Park.

The Taos Mountain Balloon Rally is truly a Taos community event. Every year on the last full weekend in October, as the trees in the high country erupt into a painter’s canvas of oranges, reds, ambers and yellows, even more color is added to the vista as the Taos skies are filled with dozens of brightly colored hot air balloons lifting into the clear, cold dawn of a Taos Mountain sunrise.
