Looking for the best, biggest, brawniest breakfast in town? The iconic building and bakery business has been owned and operated by Gina and Derek Apodaca since 2005. Best buy your bakery goodies — éclairs, empanadas, honey buns, scones, raisin breads — before you have breakfast. Then, relax with an endless mug of coffee, and choose from some 20-plus breakfast offerings — huevos rancheros, a build-your-own omelet, a stack of cowpoke-sized flapjacks.

Lunch-minded? Another 20 sandwiches, burgers and salads. Arrive hungry! Waiting line? Breathe deeply — aromas from the bakery!

Their kitchen skills plus their wine shop’s specially curated wines and craft beers, and the contribution of their partners-in-menu — Tea.o.graphy, Taos Agora Gardens, High Desert Farms, Whispering Bean Coffee Roasters and Colorado-based Red Bird Farms — guarantee both happy hour fun and an awesome selection of small plates or full dinners.

Patios in New Mexico owe their lineage to Spain, where it was common in Latin American architecture to have a courtyard. Also winning the “Best of Taos” Restaurant award this year, Medley’s patio is a big part of that. While reservations are taken for dinners, it’s first-come first-served at the inside cozy wine bar, as well as outside on the patio with its open-pit fire, the adobe wall, curved, gated doorway, and the view you may wish you had outside your own casita.

Art history

New Mexican culture and history are captured in the art of Ed Sandoval

Artistic success is always a story of both talent and tenacity. Ed Sandoval may be Taos’ most high-profile artist. But he’s lived many other lives: as an art teacher and school counselor, as a builder of adobe homes. Now, he’s savoring the opportunity to focus entirely on his art, using the skills he’s honed during eight decades of painting.

“I’m really free to just paint,” Sandoval said recently at his Quesnel Street gallery,“and I get a lot of work done. I’m taking more time with my paintings than I used to. You become very conscious about everything you’ve learned: harmony, composition, movement, texture, mood. It all comes into play.”

Sandoval’s paintings express an ideal New Mexico. There’s his signature figure of “el Viejito” — the little old man — shuffling down lonesome paths, amidst

14 BEST OF TAOS 2023 | taosnews.com/magazines/best-of-taos

iconic architecture and terrain. The paintings evoke vivid sensations — of woodsmoke and sage, the clarity of a winter night, the gorgeous melancholy of the landscape and sky. And they tell vivid stories.

“I can paint very realistically,” Sandoval said, “but it doesn’t inspire me. It doesn’t motivate me. I like drama.”

That vision is deeply rooted in Sandoval’s own experience. His early years were in Nambe, and his forebears here include Bernardo de Miera y Pacheco, who emigrated from Spain and mapped New Mexico in the 18th century. But from the rhythms of rural life, Sandoval’s family moved to Los Alamos when he began elementary school.

Sandoval didn’t speak English, and finding himself in an English-speaking classroom, surrounded by the children of Ph.Ds. was a disorienting and painful exile. The sense of a lost paradise infuses Sandoval’s paintings.

The intensity of that emotion has made Sandoval the New Mexico artist par excellence for devoted collectors nationwide, and a touchstone for many New Mexicans, who see their own heritage embodied in his work. As Sandoval has been freed to dedicate himself more fully to painting, his partner, Gwen McFaden, said he feels charged to capture and celebrate a way of life.

“He really wants to focus on building a legacy,” McFaden said, “a legacy of New Mexico. He lived the culture and, to him, it’s a responsibility to preserve that culture in paintings.”

Sandoval is marking a milestone this year, with the 30th anniversary of his Quesnel Street gallery. His work is shown on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, and he has avid collectors across the country, and the world. He’s been recognized with a Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and President Barack Obama used a Sandoval painting in a card for supporters. But while he may be harvesting the fruits of a lifelong artistic commitment, Sandoval also feels an increased sense of urgency — to create new work, about this place and culture.

“As you get older, you become more focused on where you came from,” Sandoval said. “I think that’s so for all of us. When I paint, as Gwen has said, I’m sort of the spokesman of New Mexico. You’ll see my work, and you’ll know it’s New Mexico.”

Taos Canyon Cannabis offers top-shelf product with living room vibes

To survive and thrive in Taos’ competitive cannabis market, a dispensary has to carry a vast selection of top-quality products and consistently provide friendly and personalized service.

Yet, to stand out from the pack requires a more finely-honed vision. Upon entering Taos Canyon Cannabis, it is immediately apparent that the entire staff is committed to realizing their vision of what a ‘Best in Taos’ dispensary should look like.

“We wanted the shop to feel more like someone’s living room than a sterile laboratory,” explains co-owner Shane Brocchini. Shane and crew, which includes co-owner Dillon Gross, budtenders Alicia, Warren, Erica, Zach, Michael and Douglas (plus the occasional well-behaved canine companion), provide superior flower, pre-rolls, edibles, tinctures, topicals, cartridges and more — all great prices, seven days a week.

Top-shelf New Mexico-grown weed is Taos Canyon Cannabis’ bread and butter. “We source our flower from local farms that produce on a smaller, more intentional scale than the giant grow operations,” Shane says.

Whenever possible, the shop carries flower that’s been grown outdoors in the Rocky Mountain soil, kissed by the sun, and carefully cured and handtrimmed. It’s clear from inspecting the bud that this approach makes a difference. A close look at Taos Canyon Cannabis’ flower reveals sugary THC crystals and potent, hair-like trichomes. Local flower has a richer aroma and often contains stronger notes of citrus and pine. Many believe that local flower produces a cleaner, less scaggy high with fewer “weed hangover” headaches.

The shop stocks a variety of Indica, Sativa and hybrid strains unavailable elsewhere, such as customer-favorite Keep Tahoe Blue. If you’re unsure where to start, the knowledgeable staff can point you in the right direction.

For example, those seeking less psychoactive effects and greater pain relief may prefer high-CBD strains such as Red Velvet, which is usually available at a fantastic price. On the other end of the spectrum, try the bubble hash, which contains up to 60 percent THC (go slow!).

And in keeping with their locals-first philosophy, Taos Canyon Cannabis offers a 10-percent discount to New Mexico residents. Their tax-inclusive $40 eighths are not only a great deal, they’re convenient to budget for as well.

The shop’s nicely curated edible selection is consistently on point. Wyld gummies are wildly popular, and for good reason — they’re available in an assortment of flavors and cannabinoid formulations such as CBD, CBG and CBN, depending on whether you’re seeking daytime energy or nighttime relaxation. For those who prefer to consume their cannabis in a fat-soluble form, Bhang bars, available in vegan, milk and cherry, are a solid option. The shop also carries other artisanal chocolate bars.

Thoughtful finishing touches such as attractively designed (and eco-friendly) packaging, a small selection of clothing and smoking and vaping paraphernalia rounds out what makes for a laid-back and always pleasant shopping experience.

If you have not yet visited Taos Canyon Cannabis, come see for yourself why Shane and company have been named “Best of Taos.”

Kind coffee

Friendly folks and a comfortable café at Elevation Coffee

Of all the wonderful coffee shops in town, Elevation Coffee was voted the best.

Although Elevation Coffee has won the honor before in its 14-year history, this is a first-time win for owners Alyssa LaBella and Dustin Raiola. The couple purchased the coffee shop two years ago and have been making improvements to the space; painting and updating it with new furniture to keep it feeling fresh. They’ve also changed the menu, adding drinks like a Matcha and golden orange turmeric latte. As they innovate, they try to stay true to the original vision for the coffee shop using the same coffee beans and techniques that have been in place since the beginning.

The two love what they are doing, and it shows. “People seem to like coming here. Because it’s a local

place, we get such a mix of people — those from the Pueblo, those who are visiting, the young and retirees — everyone comes here. When the weather is nice, you can sit outside with your dog. The people we hire are great with the customers. We make friends with everyone who comes in,” says LaBella. Their customers say it is their friendliness that keeps them coming back, as well as the great coffee. Regular

Lee Imboden knows coffee, having worked at The Bean. He says, “They are beautiful people, and they make the best coffee. They like their customers and their customers like them. They make it a point to know what their customers want.”

Customer Mariah Windsong agrees. She says,“What brings me here is the friendly service. It’s a place where you are called by name. That is sort of special and I like supporting them.” Her friend Cher adds that she has been coming since Elevation opened back in 2009. She observes, “It’s a comfortable place to come. The people are always very nice. They acknowledge you when you come in the door; they care.” Co-owner LaBella was raised in Taos. She worked for Elevation Coffee before she went to the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque and continued on while doing course work online. Although she lived in Albuquerque for a year, she always intended to return home and be part of the community. She was excited to have the opportunity to buy the shop with her partner Raiola.

“We saved up and were so grateful to the previous owner who worked with us so that we would be able to buy it. We were fortunate. It’s not very common that the young people in town get to own the businesses. We want to make a difference in whatever way we can. We give gift cards to local non-profits and schools and the Pueblo,” says LaBella.

She has appreciated getting to know the people who make the community work — like nurses, teachers, those who work at banks and local stores. “It’s a privilege to serve them coffee and be part of their everyday routines. It makes me realize how lucky we are to be here in this town and to be able to make something for ourselves.” Partner Raiola adds, “It’s really a great honor to be able to serve the community.”

In addition to coffee, the shop has other drinks, burritos, baked breads and pastries, along with gelato, including gluten-free and vegan choices. They offer alternative milk options and salsa made by LaBella. Wi-Fi is available, and they are now accepting credit cards.

Heart of Gold

Master jeweler Larry Martinez has nothing but love for Taos

Sitting a few dozen yards back from an increasingly busy section of Paseo del Pueblo Sur is the unassuming yet authentic home to Larry Martinez Jewelry. Recognized for his complex museum-quality jewelry, one may presume it is Martinez’s genuine talent that has resulted in at least 12 consecutive “Best of Taos” designations.

But there is a deeper reason for Martinez’s consistent “Best of Taos” tally. Much like the unassuming yet authentic former State Police building he has operated from since 1971, Martinez is equally unassuming and authentic.

Asked why the self-taught jeweler has been so successful, the affable Martinez — whose eyes seem to smile with every word — explained, “We take care of people. It’s really as simple as that.”

34 BEST OF TAOS 2023 | taosnews.com/magazines/best-of-taos

Of course, much of the work Martinez does, now with his son Diego in tow, is not simple. Martinez’s jewelry has been exhibited locally and in museums in Arizona, Missouri, Texas and Virginia, as well as private collections.

Yet every successful business finds a way to meet the needs of its community. “You would be surprised at some of the things we’ve done,” said the masterful

jewelry maker.“If something needs to be repaired with a solder, we’ve been able to help. We’ve repaired medical equipment for Holy Cross, eyeglasses, clocks, watches, a candelabra and, from time to time, the copper pots from Michael’s Kitchen.”

The original seed to design and make jewelry was planted when Martinez first took a high school arts and crafts course. “That was the genesis of where I am today,” he reflected. After taking some college courses, including an auto body class, Martinez needed to repair a bad radiator. He purchased a torch, fixed the radiator, and then remembered a piece of silver left over from the high school class.“It just snowballed from there.”

Despite his assertion that being self-taught is the worst way to learn, “you make a lot of mistakes,” Martinez’s innate talent and ambition have garnered a reputation in Taos for quality craftsmanship from a local who cares. The dedication to his work is likely in his DNA, having watched his mother own and operate a bookstore in the Plaza until she finally sold it at the age of 85. “People have asked me when I’ll retire and my answer is always the same — I’ll work until they throw me over the back fence.”

Martinez enjoys his work both for the variety as well as the consistency of working with jewelry and either creating a new piece or bringing an old piece back to life. Even in his free time, Martinez — a self-described “car guy” — can be found working with his hands. One of his favorites is a green ’66 Chevy truck he’s had for 45 years. “I completely restored that truck,” said the man who can rebuild a car engine with the same care he can with designing a wedding ring.

Along with seeds, flats and baskets of flowers are plant edibles, bird seed and feeders, water features and statuary. Petree Nursery got its start in the 1980s when Mike Petree moved to Taos. While some saying or the other brings to mind that, from a seed grows a great oak, a request for Mike to move a tree actually resulted in growing ten greenhouses, and finally, he and Sylvia and their customers created the largest garden center in the county.

Being true to a calling and considering teaching an honorable profession — that of sharing knowledge and encouraging students to be their best is why Hahn is now teaching again; his students are excited and BOT voters have spoken.

While Taos has many nonprofit groups, the hearts of voters for the Best Local Nonprofit reached out to CAV. An excellent website describes the organization’s mission: to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Among the many services available are legal and medical advocacy, counseling, support groups, programs for children as well as providing an on-site emergency shelter and short- and long-term transitional housing. Donations are always needed and accepted, and the CAV Thrift Shop accepts gently-used household items, furniture, small appliances, books, jewelry and clothing.

Real estate wunderkind Ryan Trujillo helps others put down roots

Taoseño Ryan Trujillo began working as a real estate agent in 2019. In the last four years — serving clients buying and selling homes, businesses and land — he has brokered more than 115 real estate transactions valuing in excess of $38 million. Trujillo’s combination of marketing, local knowledge and hard work has now earned him a “Best of Taos” win.

“I want people to see me as a Northern New Mexico resource,” said the 33-year-old. “It’s really important to me to preserve our culture and heritage.”

As part of the Page Sullivan Group, Trujillo is a vital member of the top-producing team in the Northern New Mexico real estate market. In 2022, Trujillo was among the top five individual producing brokers at Berkshire Hathaway NM. His team also earned a rare position within the top tenth of one percent within the BHHS Global franchise, becoming a part of the Diamond Threshold.

Trujillo has deep roots in Taos — he was born and raised in El Prado and graduated from Taos High School in 2008. His grandfather, Luis C. Martinez, owned the Gulf gas station on Taos Plaza. His father, Phillip Trujillo, is a contractor who built Orlando’s Restaurant, and his mother was a real estate specialist for the U.S. government for more than 30 years.

Ryan credits his background working for a Major League Soccer team developing their new stadium — and marketing efforts for an Israeli tech company — for his familiarity with technology.

“We’ve invested in website upgrades, to empower our customers to make the real estate buying and selling process much easier,” Trujillo said. “That will allow our customers to receive real-time accurate listing reports and, for those looking to sell, to analyze the market and get an idea of what they might be able to yield from a real estate transaction.”

As a sixth-generation New Mexican, Trujillo hopes to share the history of the region with newcomers as well as the local community — he recently published a “Local Guide to Northern New Mexico” in the newest edition of Discover Taos magazine.

To further his impact as a resource of local culture and heritage, Trujillo recently joined the board of the Taos Historic Museums: E.L. Blumenschein Home & Museum and La Hacienda de Los Martinez. “That’s one organization that I feel really does quite a bit to preserve our way of life,” he said.
