THE PASEO WINDOW DRESSING BY TA M R A T E S T E R M A N

26

taosnews.com/taosgalleryguide

The front windows of the old police station on Civic Plaza Drive are transformed into an art destination every month by The Annex Window Series fueled by the Paseo Project. Beginning in September 2020, and rotating every 30 days, Taos artists show their work, solo and as a team, and get paid for it. Jana Greiner, the curator for The Annex Window Series fueled by the Paseo Project, said the idea “sprung to life from a collaborative project done at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic called ‘Windows on the Future.’ The Paseo Project worked with Vital Spaces in Santa Fe and 516ARTS in Albuquerque to curate and install 60 artworks in 60 windows, 20 in each city for the months of July and August 2020. Inspired by the success of that project, we wanted to create a venue in a public location for artists to show their work and get paid to do it. So we reached out to the Town of Taos, who offered the front window at the old police station on Civic Plaza Drive. We began hosting installations with a one-month turnover rate in September 2020, and soon lengthened the installs to two months. Since then, we have had 10 installations created by individual artists and collaborative art teams.”

Inspired by the success of the “Windows on the Future” project, Greiner said they wanted to create a venue for local artists to show their work and get paid. The Town of Taos offered the front window at the old police station on Civic Plaza Drive for the display space. “The response to the Annex window series has been very positive,” she said. “It’s been fun hearing from people who see the installations, or by chance, pass by and inspect. At night, the window is lit up, attracting people to look. But we’ve had great feedback from the artists. It’s been a challenging two years for our local artists, and the opportunity to show work and get paid has been rewarding.”

Grenier said she looks for artwork that will “complement the space and inspire our community. My personal goal with this project is to give artists a venue outside of the museum or gallery walls to experiment with space and material. In 2022, we look forward to the Paseo Spring Out event and the PASEO 2022 festival, along with other exciting public art engagements. We will host three artists this summer for the Artist in Residence program. Keep your eyes peeled for fun art education opportunities along the way.” Grenier said she is hopeful for this year and bringing events to the streets of Taos. “Don’t miss a single thing,” she said, so be sure to follow them on Instagram @paseoproject, Facebook @paseotaos or subscribe to their newsletter (paseoproject.org/sign-up). And they’re always needing volunteers to help them make it all happen, she said, adding that they have volunteer positions of all types. Sign up on the PASEO Project’s website at paseoproject.org/volunteer.

COLLABO RAT ION

BY DENA MILLER

For those whose families have lived in Taos for generations, and for those who have more recently chosen to call Taos their home, there is an intrinsic understanding of the many ways history underscores the nature of the community. From the iconic Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to Hacienda de los Martinez and everything in between, history uniquely permeates this landscape in a manner seldom found in the U.S., and is a source of identity for Taoseños. The history of Taos as an art colony has, naturally, dominated many a conversation.

Adding to the dialogue this year is a collaboration between the Taos Center for the Arts and 203 Fine Art Gallery, when TCA’s Encore Gallery becomes the 2022 home of “203 Fine Art Downtown at TCA.” With three curated exhibitions scheduled for the year — the first coming up in March — visitors to Encore Gallery will be treated to a glimpse inside 203’s collection of works by the Taos Moderns, Mid-Century Moderns, American Abstract Expressionists, and the light-and-space, California-based artists of the 1960s. For each exhibit, essential artworks from the era’s important regional artists will be meticulously and impartially selected by professional guest curators, noted Eric Andrews who, along with partner Shaun Richel, founded 203 Fine Art and are widely regarded for their encyclopedic knowledge of Taos as an iconic American art colony. What adds to the excitement of this collaboration is TCA’s own historical link to the establishment of Taos’ reputation in the art world. “The forerunner of the TCA was the formation of the Taos Artist Association in 1953,” when a collective of working local artists established themselves in the Stables Gallery, explained Colette LaBouff, Executive Director of TCA. “Partnering with 203 Fine Art is incredibly exciting, an opportunity for learning about the role of TAA and the Stables Gallery in art within our communities.” “The history of art in Taos is a vast subject, some elements more obscure than others,” added Andrews. “We are pleased to present the works from our collection along with some stories and history behind the great group of artists who made that history.” According to the Stables Art Gallery Policy Statement (revised 1961 copy), the qualifications for entry into the gallery included first requiring artists be a member of TAA. They must have been a legal resident for at least one year before making application; must have earned honors in New Mexico or out of state in recognition of their chosen genre; and must have passed muster by both the screening committee and the gallery art committee. 64

Above all other requirements, perhaps:

“Art must be his vocation, not his avocation.”

From this typewritten, scant two-page document grew the downtown heart of the art movement. The Stables Gallery became a hub for the Taos Moderns and others who ushered in another generation of creative energy, and gave locals a central meeting spot at which they could enjoy viewing and acquiring art. The Stables Gallery was “not a museum, but this was a birth home for many artists who exhibited, collaborated and lived in Taos before we became TCA,” LaBouff noted.

“We’re excited for the chance to highlight a few long-time Taos artists and creatives who continue this tradition: artists we know, respect and would like to share with the public downtown at TCA,” Andrews said. LaBouff agreed. “TCA is thrilled to be looking for ways to highlight the history, the art and the artists connected to this organization. Partnering with 203 Fine Art is an opportunity for learning about the role of TAA and the Stables Gallery in art within our communities.” With TCA celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2023, the partners are considering other events such as lectures, readings and historically relevant films to maintain and grow the respect of what TCA represents.

This is not the first time that TCA and 203 have collaborated; in recent years, 203 has presented exhibitions at Sta- “It’s a great chance to connect our thebles dedicated to the Taos Moderns ater to the rest of TCA and to make those links visible,” expanding the and to Ted Egri, proceeds of which already inclusive programming beyond were donated to the restoration of the its live performances and other cultural aging gallery. The origins of the Southwest’s most storied cultural institutions are often as interesting as the objects preserved within. Take the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, for instance. Before it became one of the must-see cultural institutions of the Southwest, located on the mesa just north of Taos, its namesake was considered a very wellknown fashionista, an heiress to the Standard Oil fortune through her grandfather, the legendary tycoon Henry Huddleston Rogers. But, Millicent Rogers was known more for her iconoclastic character. While often seen in newspaper society pages and magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, or on the arms of movie stars and celebrities such as Clark Gable, Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming and various members of royalty, she flaunted convention by taking three husbands, the first at age 21. In her lifetime, she became mother to Peter Salm, and Paul and Arturo Peralta-Ramos Jr.

She was also a lover of great art, and even made some of her own. This interest became more focused when she began exploring the American Southwest and fell in love with Native American art, which she began collecting from her small adobe home in Taos called “Turtle Walk,” where she settled in 1947. Although quite active in her day, her health suffered greatly as the result of having contracted rheumatic fever as a child. She died Jan. 1, 1953 at the age of 50.

In tribute to his mother, her son Paul Peralta-Ramos founded the Millicent Rogers Museum in 1956, using her collection of Southwest art as the basis. First located on Ledoux Street, the museum moved to the Manby-Thorne House where it operated until 1968, when the home of Claude J.K. and Elizabeth Anderson was donated. It was in this location, with its sweeping panorama of the Taos Valley, that the museum blossomed, especially after its renovation and expansion in the mid-1980s by famed architect Nathaniel A. Owings. M R M :

The museum has since grown by leaps and bounds. Although founded as a way to show Rogers’ personal collection, it has become a professionally operated cultural institution dedicated to the preservation, exhibition and study of Southwestern art and historic objects. Paul Peralta-Ramos was instrumental in providing important stewardship for the museum’s early years, and through his friendship with Maria Martinez, the famed potter of San Ildefonso Pueblo, ultimately led to her family donating what is the largest publicly-held collection of Martinez material in the world. This collection encompasses not only Martinez’s professional career as a potter, but also includes numerous items relating to her private life, including clothing, jewelry and papers. “That collection is now the centerpiece of a major permanent exhibition on her life and work,” a museum statement reads. In addition to Native American art, the museum also focuses on works by Hispano and Non-Native artists whose contributions have been important to the evolution of art and culture in the Southwest. Perhaps one of its greatest contributions has been the museum’s affiliation with nearby Taos Pueblo, whose artists are a regular part of the museum’s exhibition cycles. Its annual Taos Pueblo Artists Winter Showcase has proven to be a much-needed resource for Native American artists, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, which has closed the village to visitors. taosnews.com/taosgalleryguide

TAOS CERAMICS CENTER COMMUNITY VISION

BY DENA MILLER

93

When Taos Clay in El Prado closed, a core of local artists were left without communal studio space and a supplier of the materials necessary for their craft. It was fortunate, indeed, there was a move toward quickly filling the void. In August 2020, Jules and Georgia Epstein opened the doors of Taos Ceramics Center, located at 114 Este Es Road, in the old Taos Lighting Center building. “Our vision is one of community involvement and support, an educational resource for all ages, a retail ceramics supply store, and an interdisciplinary gallery showcasing some of the best in ceramics and the visual arts,” the Epsteins noted.

94

The transformation of the building into a mecca for ceramic artists and students was serendipitous, the couple said. Old showroom space was readily converted into a gallery

for art shows and sales — tracks for lighting already in place — and is now a go-to on the exhibition circuit, with shows changing every other month. Office and warehouse areas were just as easily turned into an expansive studio space with separate glazing and retail rooms. “The conversion came together as if it was meant to be,” said Jules Epstein. “Now it is a playful and creative space,” including ample outdoor areas for their kiln yard with electric, propane raku and three small gas kilns. “We are working on the addition of a small wood fire kiln, as well as an outdoor classroom which will provide more overall studio flexibility.” As a co-op, TCC memberships are available on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis.

There is also a Flex Pass: three hour-long studio segments purchased in blocks of six or 12 sessions. With each option, you are given an access code for signing in to the TCC scheduler where available space and time slots may be viewed and reserved. Visitors are welcome to practice their craft, or learn something new, with either the flex passes or a single day pass. Classes — featuring some of the region’s best instructors — are available; some may be best suited to those with experience, but there are plenty of opportunities for beginners, as well, so be sure to check the schedule online and reserve your spot. TCC also entered into a retail partnership with New Mexico Clay in Albuquerque, with low to high-fire clays, tools, underglazes, glazes and raw materials available for purchase. “This is an important element of TCC, because we are now the only outlet for supplies from northern New Mexico to southern Colorado,” Epstein said. With all TCC already has to offer, be on the lookout for even more exciting news from them in the coming months.

GEORGIA EPSTEIN, TCC MANAGER

96

“We have applied for 501(c)(3) status, and expect to receive it this summer [of 2022],” Epstein explained. “As a non-profit, we will be able to expand our outreach to our educational partners in the public and charter schools, offering grants and scholarships, and with a long-term goal of opening an art school.”

taosnews.com/taosgalleryguide

It is a move that would make sense for Taos, and not only because of its storied history as a premier art colony. The community as a whole remains invested in nurturing and growing the region’s unique creative energy for future generations, and TCC will be a major player in making that happen. Georgia Epstein, who took classes six years ago at University of New Mexico — Taos, and discovered a passion and affinity for clay, also sees Taos Ceramics Center as providing a more immediate benefit for its users. “Working with clay is a very meditative process,” she said. “If you can think it; if you can dream it; you can build it with clay.” ‘ O P E N T O I N T E R P R E TAT I O N ’ E X H I B I T I O N A N D R E A P I C H A I D A , C E R A M I C S A N D A R M A N D O A D R I A N - L O P E Z , PA I N T I N G S

BRYANS GALLERY WHERE LOCAL MEETS ECLECTIC

BY HAVEN LINDSEY

Tucked away in plain sight in the historic 1948 Howell Building on Kit Carson Road, you’ll find Bryans Gallery. Home to authentic Southwestern Native American arts and jewelry, Bryan Steger opened the gallery on April Fool’s Day, 1982. Steger isn’t the type to be concerned with having the last laugh but perhaps his jester-like decision to open on Fool’s Day has helped to maintain the levity required to run a successful business for 40 years. taosnews.com/taosgalleryguide

“You would have to be a fool to open a gallery on April Fool’s Day in Taos,” chuckled Steger, but clearly, he has found a way to make it work, not only through a recession but also a pandemic. The inviting gallery space welcomes visitors with warm hospitality to shop and linger. The energy feels part museum, part art gallery. Steger’s reputation for supporting local artists and representing their work has resulted, in some cases, in working with the same family of artists for generations. The gallery features work from the Northern Pueblos of New Mexico, Hopi, Navajo and Zuni lands. Hopi artist Gregory Lomayesva has displayed his colorful Hopi Folk Art Masks at Bryans Gallery since 1989. The masks are some of the more popular and eye-catching pieces to adorn the naturally lit gallery. D.R. Nance’s masks, which are made from gourds brightly painted with leather dyes and various types of feathers, are also well showcased on the gallery’s walls. Southwestern paintings include framed works from Barbara Coffey-Jones, Leah Lucas, John Wayne Morrison, Lyn Orona and Sandy Wohlfrom. The paintings throughout Bryans Gallery are representative of local and regional depictions from artists, many of whom have their own following.

It is, however, the near cult-like following of the Zuni Fetishes that all but ensures that every day, Bryans Gallery sells at least one item. The small, affordable Zuni Fetishes are hand-carved from stone, shells, and sometimes fossils. Within the Zuni community, the carvings are used for

ceremonies, and each one, depending on the animal or icon, represents specific meanings. A bear, for example, represents strength and introspection, while a turtle represents longevity and fertility. The Native American pieces are easily collectible and make for a nice gift or ‘memory’ for visitors passing through.

taosnews.com/taosgalleryguide

103

Bryans Gallery is also home to various sizes and styles of pottery, turned wood, sculptures, baskets, Santos carvings and jewelry. It is with the jewelry that Steger shares

a secret known mostly to locals. “I’m told we’re the best jewelry store in town.” The gallery showcases Southwestern-style pieces, estate jewelry and even some finds from pawn shops. To ensure there is something for every budget, Steger has his “famous case” of authentic silver and turquoise jewelry where nothing is priced higher than $29.

Steger’s success is, in part, due to his ability to hire quality employees. Jen Acampora has worked at Bryans Gallery for 10 years, and is not only knowledgeable, but she is also insightful as she shares some of the stories behind the art. Bryans Gallery is one of the few places where anyone can have their jewelry appraised for no, or nominal, cost. As sources of in-house education, both Steger and Acampora are willing to show their guests how to spot real turquoise from treated, older from newer, and the tell-tale signs of counterfeit pieces. The intentionally eclectic gallery carries a range of price points, including Steger’s “famous case” of affordable, quality jewelry to vintage Taos paintings and high-end carvings that can sell for $5,000 or more. Steger shares, however, that while they cater to every range of buyer, many of today’s customers are interested in smaller works of art. Part of Steger’s success also comes from Bryans Gallery e-bay store which has proven to be a successful adjunct to the business. Bryans Gallery is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
