O

ur mission at Taos Municipal Schools is to "prepare all students academically, socially, physically and emotionally to succeed as responsible citizens."

Amid this pandemic, we have overcome several barriers and continue to forge forward for our students. We are committed to use our District's strengths and accomplishments to move to higher levels this school year. Our primary goal is the safety of our students and their socialemotional health. This school year, it is important that we continue to do everything possible and stay

within the NM Public Education guidelines to keep every child and staff member safe. Despite months of challenges last school year with the pandemic, this year there is so much to be grateful for as we move into the new school year, continuing to overcome obstacles. I am proud of our staff and students' tenacity, flexibility and resiliency. Together, with our families and community, we have come so far in such a short period of time. From connecting 100% of our students with internet connection and laptops, to learning the Canvas Platform and virtual technology. Also, providing almost one million meals with bus routes at all school locations for the entire year. One of the greatest strengths of Taos Municipal Schools is its diversity- the people, the programs, and most of all the opportunities for our students. The strengths and benefits which result from that diversity are reflected every day in

the accomplishments of our students and staff. We are committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students, so they are supported and comforted in the school environment. We truly do love every student in every school and will support their mental health needs. I look forward to working diligently with our community and collaborating to create a safe, supportive and an equitable learning environment to promote social and emotional development for every student in our District. Thank you for your confidence in our teachers/staff to lead this incredible District, Taos Municipal Schools. I am grateful for such an inspiring community as we strive to get completely through this pandemic. We must see our strengths to build upon and grow! Respectfully,

Dr. Lillian Torrez Dr. Lillian Torrez, Superintendent

Early Childhood Education Programs

Early Learning programs in Taos serve young children from birth to age 5 and their families. Home visiting and Early Head Start services can also start prenatally to make sure that parents receive good prenatal care and are ready to support their newborns. Early learning services provide a range of learning experiences for infants, toddlers and preschoolers to make sure they develop and learn, and are ready for school when they enter kindergarten. Children with developmental delays and disabilities are supported through the Family Infant Toddler (FIT) Program and Early Childhood Special Education, at home or in their classroom setting. Early learning services also help parents know how they can best support their child’s development with daily learning opportunities. Early learning services in New Mexico are administered by the Public Education Department, Children, Youth & Families Department, and the Department of Health and utilize a range of state and federal funding sources. One such resource is Paso a Paso, 12

BACK TO SCHOOL 2021-2022

which is a community network that supports early learning programs in Taos and western Colfax counties. Its roots go back more than 20 years when a group of Taos early childhood professionals – some of whom remain active in Paso today – got together to assist families in the transition from early intervention programs to kindergarten. Today, the Paso a Paso Network works to improve outcomes in all areas of early childhood education and care. Network members represent one or more of four sectors: Early Care and Education; Family Support Services; Early Intervention and Special Rights; and Health and Behavioral Health. Paso a Paso bridges the gap between these organizations, integrating them into stronger, more flexible and effective structures by merging resources and systems to advance a collective mission. The result is improved efficiency among organizations and greater access, availability, and quality of services for families with young children.

PASO A PASO Some previous initiatives include: • First Steps Home Visiting • Children’s Trust Fund – Taos Loves Kids • Nurturing Center at Enos Garcia Elementary School • Imagination Library We currently have seven working committees: • Policy and Communication Committee • Taos Early Childhood Alliance • Taos Pueblo Early Learning Committee • Partnering in Children’s Success • Professional Development

Shared Professional Development

Paso a Paso initiatives help professionals develop innovative programs for families; improve practices; build and recruit the early childhood workforce; advocate for resources; and educate the community on the critical importance of the early childhood years. Paso a Paso’s target population includes its members and the children and families they serve: front-line staff including educators; developmental and infant mental health specialists; family therapists; pediatrician; nurse practitioners; home visitors; and community health workers.

Homecare

Paso a Paso’s working committee, Taos Early Childhood Alliance (TECA), is funded by Thornburg Foundation, R.T. Keeler and Brindle Foundation in collaboration with UNM-Taos. Regarding homecare, TECA is working to develop more registered and licensed homecare situations. Now more than ever – as families are working – it’s important to make sure our youngest citizens have a safe and caring environment from which to grow. Becoming a registered or licensed home care provider for infants through 8-year olds affords one the opportunity to get reimbursed for food for your program and to collect state money for low income families when caring for children. For more information, contact Monica Trujillo, home care liaison at (575) 224-1090. Calls can be taken in Spanish and English. The Paso a Paso Network is a longstanding and successful example of a local community mobilizing and leveraging community assets around the wellbeing of young children in Taos County.

Taos High School GRADS Program and Taos Family Development Center

The Taos Family Development Center is an onsite day care at Taos High School that serves teen parents and Taos Municipal Schools employees. The GRADS program – along with the Taos Family Development Center – helps high school students overcome the cycle of poverty through achieving a high school education and employability skills, and develop positive parenting and healthy relationship skills. The center serves children from birth to 4 years old.

Becoming an Early Childhood Education Teacher UNM-Taos ECED Teacher Residency Program

The Early Childhood Education & Development (ECED) Associates degree program is an innovative and comprehensive program, where theory and practice are woven into the learning experience. Students engage in traditional studies and participate in a teacher residency, giving students an opportunity to be mentored by an experienced teacher in an early learning environment (birth to third-grade classroom) either where they work or they are assigned to a community school. Additionally, ECED students are given several opportunities to reflect on their coursework and hands-on classroom understandings: working with a mentor teacher, participating in a learning circle with peers, and contributing in Taos' Collaborative Teacher Institute (CTI). Each component of the ECED program builds skills; knowledge, critical thinking and reflective teaching, preparing our students to be competent and capable educators. The ECED program supports students who are interested in obtaining a solid understanding of early childhood as well as the knowledge and ability to be a successful students, prepared to transfer into a 4-year university to complete their bachelor's in early childhood education (licensure pre-kindergarten to third grade or non-licensure) or a related field in family child studies. Students have the option of receiving stackable certificates: Child Development Certificate (CDC) (11-12 credit hours), Early Childhood Education & Development Certificate (32 credit hours), and then work toward an associates degree (61 credit hours).

There are several opportunities to receive a scholarship or financial support if you are studying education. UNM-Taos holds two scholarships for those who are Pell eligible, Grow Your Own Teachers for those who have been an education assistant in the public schools for two or more years and the Teacher Preparation Affordability is open to all with certain stipulations. Additionally, if you are working in a program under the new Early Childhood Education and Care Department, you are eligible for a full scholarship. Lastly, some students may be eligible for funds through New Mexico's WIOA Help program. For more information about our teacher education programs contact Dr. Pam Remstein, Remstein@unm.edu or 575-737-6266.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHILD DEVELOPMENT By the age of 5, 90% of the brain’s capacity has already developed. A child’s brain is more receptive to learning during the first 5 years of his life than at any other point in time – when the brain is most flexible. The more you exercise different areas of the brain in the early years of development, the more lasting an impact it will have on their learning ability.

Early Intervention Programs*

Early intervention is a system of services that helps babies and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities. Early intervention focuses on helping eligible babies and toddlers learn the basic and brand-new skills that typically develop during the first three years of life, such as: • physical (reaching, rolling, crawling, and walking); • cognitive (thinking, learning, solving problems); • communication (talking, listening, understanding); • social/emotional (playing, feeling secure and happy); and • self-help (eating, dressing).

Play!

Parents often hear of the importance of playtime in preschool. Play is the foundation for all learning when it comes to young children. Play is how they begin to understand and process their world. Children’s play unlocks their creativity and imagination, and develops reading, thinking, and problem-solving skills, as well as further develops motor skills.

Social emotional development

In their first few years of life, young children acquire social and emotional skills such as regulating emotions, sharing with others, and following instructions. These skills lay the foundation for developing literacy, numeracy, and other cognitive abilities that are critical for success in school and life. Healthy social and emotional development is rooted in nurturing and responsive relationships with family members and other caregivers, including those who provide care in early learning settings. Early care and education professionals in child care and preschool classrooms are important partners in supporting social and emotional development, and ensuring that the youngest learners are ready for school and on the path to success.

elcome to the 2021/22 School Year!

It is my pleasure to welcome students and families to Ranchos Elementary School. I feel extremely fortunate to be working with such an exceptional group of students, families, and staff. This is an exciting time for us as we prepare for our students and the adventures ahead.

This past year was unlike any we have ever had. I would like to extend my appreciation to the families who continued to make education a priority during the challenges of our last year and virtual learning. Because of you, our students were able to access and reap the full benefits of learning and being a successful student.

As we move forward, we are hopeful that we are moving toward more “ normal” times. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the Ranchos Staff who worked so hard during virtual learning, and then even harder when we returned to inperson learning where they became both virtual and in-person teachers. None of us were completely prepared for what the year had in store for us but kudos to my Ranchos Staff for stepping up to the challenges and doing a fantastic job. Ranchos, most definitely, has a remarkable staff – cooks, teachers, custodians, a secretary, a nurse, educational assistants, bus drivers, and social workers who spend countless hours training, caring, preparing, and planning for our students. Lessons are engaging and

research-based best practices are used daily. We are driven by student data and make instructional decisions based on what students need both socially and academically.

on the first day of school. Parents will be notified via our phone notification system when they can visit the school and get safety procedure documents and detailed schedules.

The Ranchos Team is dedicated to creating successful learners by expecting academic excellence and holding high expectations for all our students. In addition to academics, our focus is to also create a safe and positive learning environment. The educational team and students will promote and model responsible and respectful behavior creating a positive and safe learning atmosphere where teachers are able to teach and students are able to learn.

Registration is open from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. beginning on July 22nd. Please bring your student’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of physical address. We are delighted to welcome our new students and their families to Ranchos Elementary.

The first day of school is Thursday, August 12th. All students will receive free breakfast and lunch beginning

In closing, we look forward to building positive relationships and partnering with our school community in efforts to educate our students. Please contact us at 737-6150 if you would like further information.

D

ear Peñasco Parents and Community,

As principal of Peñasco Elementary, it is an honor and pleasure to welcome everyone back for an amazing school year. We will continue to move forward after facing a a very challenging year. We are super excited to have students back in our classrooms and hallways, filling them with energy and enthusiasm for learning. It is our school vision to build a strong community, where goals, opportunities, and ambition meet! Even though I have only had limited interactions with teachers and parent thus far, I can already tell how dedicated our teachers are. They have been attending trainings, preparing their classrooms, and planning with our children and vision in mind. Furthermore, it is evident that Peñasco Elementary is a family, and that is heartwarming. My name is Michelle Gonzales, and I am honored and humbled to serve as the elementary principal for Peñasco. I have been in education for the past 17 years, as a teacher, instructional coach, and as an administrator. I wholeheartedly believe that every student deserves a quality education, and this happens when we work together as one team. We will celebrate student successes, small and large and remind them that they are valued and that each of them has a special place at our school.

G

reetings Peñasco Schools Community,

Welcome to the 21-22 school year! It is with great pleasure that I return to my home district and connect with former colleagues, students and families. Staff and I have been working diligently to prepare this school year with a few new rigorous and exciting programs and a few new course offerings which will expand students’ learning opportunity while we support writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading across all content areas. Programs will include intervention and enrichment opportunities, Career & Technical Education courses (7-12) and College & Career Readiness courses to all K-12th grade students. We also plan to expand our afterschool co-curricular and extra-curricular clubs to further engage and expose students. We will focus to improve our district’s Leadership, Culture, Systems and Instructional Programs. We will be assessing and making gradual adjustments where needed to improve the effectiveness of our schools which will improve your child’s success. We will be inviting parents and students to participate in these conversations and encourage you to participate.

Returning to full on-campus learning August 11th, we will still have an emergency COVID safety plan in place and wait for NMPED guidance with new toolkit/info for return. Additional information regarding a student remote option will be shared as we learn more from NMPED and our board of education plan. Thank you to everyone who has participated in school and district preparation. My very best to all as we commence the new year. Respectfully,

Melissa Sandoval, Superintendent

I will be here to support families and staff so that we are successful, in turn putting our children in best possible position to be successful. I look forward to meeting all of you and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns or ideas you would like to share. Respectfully,

Michelle Gonzales, Elementary Principal

O

n behalf of the staff of Peñasco Middle and High School staff, I want to welcome back students, parents, and community members to an exciting school year.

We have dubbed this school year as the “Re-building Year.” That means that staff, students, and parents can expect changes to course offerings, clubs, communication, and instruction. District administrators are collaborating to create a rich academic, social, athletic and inclusive environment that is supported by effective and transparent communication. It is our hope that we can return to school with a renewed invigoration that will carry us through the challenges that lay ahead. Please make sure to register your student online or registration forms are available in the middle/high school office. A list of school supplies can be found on the school website’s teacher page. Finally, updates to COVID-safe practices/requirements will be released and shared when the New Mexico Public Education Department provides guidance. New Mexico Pre-K Programs TAOS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS 2021-2022

W

e are able to continue to offer the New Mexico Pre-K programs at Enos Garcia and Ranchos Elementary. This is a program designed for four-yearold students as a full day program Monday thru Thursday. Enos Garcia Elementary will again have three Pre-K classrooms as well as Ranchos Elementary will have two classrooms. Both will have highly qualified pre-school teachers and support staff. With this expansion, we have the continued ability to provide placements for many four-year-old’s in their neighborhood elementary school for the 2021/22 school year. Please remember to contact either Enos Garcia Elementary or Ranchos Elementary and have your child added to the waiting list as soon

as possible. Students must be four years old by September 1, 2021 to be eligible for this program. We are excited that Taos Municipal Schools received a grant for a new research-based curriculum called ‘Three Cheers for PreK’ to enhance our Pre-K students learning. The curriculum includes social emotional learning and a version in Spanish. In addition, the Pre-K program has received enough I Pads for each student to use as a learning tool in the event there is the need for distance learning. Taos Municipal Schools continues to partner with YDI Head Start located in the district, to offer programs for three and four-year-old children at both Enos Garcia and Arroyos del

Norte Elementary. If you would like to enroll in these programs you can contact Youth Development Inc. at (575) 758-3425. New Mexico Pre-K is a program funded by the New Mexico legislature to provide early intervention services to children who are four years old by September 1st of the upcoming school year. Program funds allow the district to provide research based best practices in early childhood education to students prior to their entrance into kindergarten. Educational research shows when students are able to attend a preschool program have more success in their school careers and students benefit from additional interventions when needs are identified and supported at an earlier age.

Exceptional Program Department TAOS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS 2021-2022

W

elcome to Taos Municipal Schools Exceptional Programs. Our department and staff provide individualized services to students with exceptionalities by highly qualified teachers and ancillary staff. Your child will have an assigned case manager to oversee the development and implementation of his/her program. The case manager assigned to your child and your school principal, along with other team members from the school, will work with you to meet your child’s individual needs throughout the school year.

What are Exceptional Programs? Students who qualify for exceptional programs have been identified by a multidisciplinary team with one or more of thirteen recognized disabilities and a need for specially designed programming to be successful in school. A multidisciplinary team consists of individuals who have expertise in various areas and most importantly you as their parent! In New Mexico students also qualify for exceptional programs if they meet the state criteria as gifted by a multidisciplinary team in either academic achievement, critical thinking, or creativity.

How do I know if my child qualifies for Exceptional Programs? There are a number of pathways to potentially identify a student with a disability.

1

Your child can be referred for an evaluation by your schools Student Assistance Team if he/she has not made expected progress, even after research-based interventions have been implemented over time.

34

BACK TO SCHOOL 2021-2022

2

You can request an evaluation

from school personnel at any time. Exceptional Programs staff will meet with you and your child’s teacher to review existing data and provide recommendations.

3

Your child may have participated in a Child Find activity and a referral may be made to the school district. If it is in the best interest of the student to proceed with an evaluation, you will meet with a professional from the district to receive information on the potential assessments and will be asked to sign a consent form to proceed with the assessments. A licensed professional diagnostician will gather more information from both you and your child through some interviews and standardized assessments. Also, other professionals may become involved, such as a Speech Language Pathologist, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, etc. The team will then meet to review all this data and make an eligibility determination based on state guidelines. As your child’s parent, you are an essential member of the ‘IEP team’ in the process and will be involved in each step.

Extended School Year Services

Your child’s case manager will schedule at least one IEP team meeting every year to review your child’s progress on their goals and update the current IEP. Your child’s case manager will also schedule a re-evaluation every three years. Any member of the IEP team can call for an additional meeting at any time to review the current document and make any changes to the plan or services. As you are a member of the team, you may ask for a meeting at any time.

The public health order in March of 2020 presented unique challenges for all students, parents, community members and district staff. The district provided services in a variety of ways that met the governor’s orders at that time, while still supporting your child. If your child had an IEP, the Exceptional Programs (EXPRO) team at each of the school buildings within Taos Municipal Schools worked tirelessly to develop a specialized program to best support your child through this time of distance learning. The team is dedicated to continuing to support your child in any way possible. We were able to return to a more traditional setting in April of 2021. There was also a short summer ESY/Compensatory/Mitigating services in June. When we return in August, the EXPRO team will review your child’s IEP to determine if there was a significant loss of learning during the COVID-19 health emergency. If there is a concern, you will be invited to participate in a meeting to review the results and discuss any compensatory services you child may need to support their expected growth. If you would like to have a meeting to discuss the results at any time, please notify your child’s case manager.

Exceptional Programs can help families by: Locating valuable resources in the community Identifying and evaluating student needs Transitional planning for the future

Specialized programs that Exceptional Programs support: The preschool classrooms at Enos Garcia Elementary and Ranchos Elementary provides both inclusive and/or pull out services to meet each child’s needs. In partnership with all other licensed preschool facilities in Taos County

What is an IEP? An IEP is an Individual Education Plan, which is an agreement between the school and you to provide specifically designed instruction and individualized support to your child in order to access the same curriculum as other students. It is a living document that should change regularly as the team refines strategies to maximize your child’s ongoing educational success.

Taos Middle School TAOS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS 2021-2022

W

elcome to the 2021-22 school year! Last year has proven to be one of the most challenging school years to say the least. It was a time when technology would be the center of education and not only students, teachers and staff had to quickly make changes and become adaptable, but parents and families as well. As planning begins for this school year, we will continue to follow district and NM PED guidelines to ensure all safety precautions are in place. We look

36

forward to taking the necessary steps to start getting back to a more normal school environment. Regardless of the guidelines set forth, we will continue to offer quality education, while focusing on the well-being of each student. Taos Middle School teachers and staff are dedicated to the overall success of all students and will continue this with open communication, cooperation and collaboration with parents and the community. This school year a 20-minute advisory class will be added to the daily schedule allowing open communication between parents and teachers. It will also offer

academic support to the students while teaching them how to stay organized and responsible. PowerSchool and Canvas will continue to be our online platforms. Each of these programs have parent portals, which we encourage parents to use, making it easier to be involved in your child’s education.

I look forward to working with the students, parents and families, as well as the community to bring forth a safe, healthy and exciting middle school experience. I encourage and invite you to get involved to help make this year be a success for all students.

The range of electives, from Band and Physical Education to Food Science and Mariachi will remain, all while integrating AVID best practices and Social Emotional Learning. Virtual grade level Q&A meetings will continue throughout the year to inform families about important information and events.

Sincerely,

Linda Quintana Martinez Taos Middle School Principal (575) 737-6000

Taos Tiger Althletics TAOS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS 2021-2022

C

alling all Taos Tiger Fans!

This year, Taos Municipal Schools Athletics is planning for a regular season with some possible safety measures still in place under NMAA guidance to continue to mitigate the impact of COVID-19. When it comes to decision-making, our commitment is to protect the health and safety of our athletes under the “Return to Play” activities. The mission of Taos Tiger Athletics is to continue to provide athletes with experiences that offer all students additional opportunities to develop their physical and mental capacities beyond those provided by our fine academic programs. Furthermore, through sports and other extracurricular activities, students may learn the value of hard work, discipline, team building,

sportsmanship, leadership, and other positive attributes that strengthen one’s character. The Athletic Department will strive to provide students with the best possible opportunity for a rewarding and positive experience. As “Return to Play” activities resume, Taos Municipal Schools Athletics will continue to provide exciting ways for fans to participate and cheer on our Taos Tigers. The tools implemented this past year to provide cashless preferred options for purchasing tickets and online streaming will continue providing our fans a variety of ways to support our Taos Tiger Athletes. Look for a possible new addition of the “Food Fan” APP where a fan can order food via the app, pay via the app, and then get notification of food pick up at the concession

stand alleviating long lines and missing any game-time action. To participate in Taos Municipal Schools (TMS) athletic programs, both the student- athlete and parents/guardians must complete the TMS Athletic Participation Forms, and the student-athlete must have insurance. This year we have gone paperless, and all athletic forms must be completed via “Rank One” (https://www.rankonesport.com/ content/). Any additional forms or required paperwork such as course certificates and additional verification must be uploaded to the site. Before the student-athlete is allowed the privilege to participate in any of our programs, they must complete all the requirements. more information please call 751-8030. Excite Fundraising for our schedule posters and events tickets, and we use All-American Publishing, Primetime Advertising, and On Time sports for our game spirit items. Taos Cyber Magnet High School TAOS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS 2021-2022

T

aos Cyber Magnet School is a unique, blended-learning opportunity for high school students in Taos County and is a Taos Municipal District school. We offer Edgenuity, the online platform, that provides curriculum in core and elective courses to support students with their state graduation requirements. Additionally, students learn from live instruction and tutoring in English, Science, and Math. During this unprecedented year of remote learning, TCMS students were able to continue with their lessons on Edge, while quickly adjusting to the virtual meetings and “live” lessons taught on Microsoft Teams, the learning management system used by all district high school students. In this small school setting, students learn how to be independent and to self-pace, with support in notetaking and academic and social skill building from both the head teacher and tutors. The built-in calendar in Edgenuity is an added plus for following the lesson deadlines per day and week. Math and Science tutors support the students, with a ratio of 1 to 5, with their lessons in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and AP Calculus courses, in which most of the students at TCMS are enrolled, as well as project-based science activities while providing live instruction. As a result of specialized attention in math, math scores have improved on short-cycle assessments and EOCs by 13%. Students also receive Mindfulness and Yoga training by a certified instructor that helps support our students’ social and emotional well-being.

The teachers at Taos Cyber Magnet take their time to make sure we are learning and engaged. The horno project was really cool, and the BioSteam sketches and project came out great.” Simon Parraz Senior

In addition to taking courses that prepare them for graduation, students at TCMS can participate in Internship programs like The Red Willow Farm and the “Farm to Table” program while working with the Enos Garcia elementary students. TCMS students participate in extracurricular programs like Café Scientifique that help them to grow their resume while learning about a variety of STEM topics given by presenters from LANL and other scientists from around the state offered to Taos County Teens. This year, the students participated in a Robotics class that gave them an opportunity to learn coding and programming. TCMS students take college-entrance exams and work closely with the Upward Bound program which supports lo- income families with tutoring in Math and Science and college and career readiness. They also participate in Bridges Project for Education to prepare them for the transition from high school to college, focusing on the application and FAFSA processes.

Health TAOS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS 2021-2022

W

elcome to the 2021–2022 school year! The Taos Municipal Schools is excited to say we worked very hard to keep everyone safe while we were in the remote model, the hybrid model, and the full entry plan. There were very few COVID-19 cases within the schools, and we are happy to report there were no COVID-19 cases due to school exposure! The team has continued to work diligently to create an updated plan to protect our students and staff while also providing the maximum educational opportunities. We are waiting until we receive the latest guidance, from New Mexico Public Education Department (NM PED) and addition guidelines from the New Mexico Department of Health (NM DOH). Below there are some preliminary guidelines based on current practice but are subject to change as the status of COVID-19 continues to evolve. Also, the updated immunization requirements from the NM DOH.

There will be an update prior to school starting on August 12th.

Currently the following are some of the safety/health measures that will take place for students and staff: Students and staff are required to regularly wash hands and time is provided during the school day to do such or use hand sanitizer when it is not practical to hand wash. All school buildings and busses will be cleaned and sanitized following the latest recommendations from NM PED and NM DOH. Hand sanitizer is provided in each classroom and in main locations throughout all schools and frequently used.

46

BACK TO SCHOOL 2021-2022

All students and staff who are eligible to be vaccinated are encouraged to do so. The school district will continue to sponsor vaccination events to the approved age ranges allowed by the CDC. The district is required to have staff and students who are not vaccinated participate in ‘random COVID testing’. The district has staff who are undergoing the training to complete rapid COVID-19 testing within the buildings to help with the ‘random COVID testing’. Parents, you will have a release in your registration packets to give the district Sponsored content provided by Taos Municipal Schools

permission to have your child participate in this at school testing. At this time, all students and staff are required to wear approved masks. If this changes, the district will inform parents and staff of the new guidelines. Social distancing requirements will be updated when new guidelines are provided from NM PED and NM DOH. All individuals, including students and staff, entering any of the district buildings are still required to have their temperature checked.

Also, register using either the Eagle App (information is posted outside the door and can be done using your ‘Smart Phone’) or complete the survey provided at the entrance. This information is essential to help with weekly state reporting and any contact tracing the district needs to provide to NM DOH. Parents/guardians will be asked to check for COVID-19 symptoms at home prior to departing for school each day. Students and staff will be asked to remain home if sick. Parents/guardians will be allowed in schools by appoint only.

The information in this publication is accurate as of the date of publishing and is provided in good faith by Taos Municipal Schools; Information is subject to change without advance notice.

Plan and Prepare Practice and reinforce good prevention habits with your family: Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

If Your School/Childcare Program Is Dismssed... Keep track of school dismissal updates. Read or watch local media sources that report school dismissals or stay in touch with your school. Taos Schools will continue to support remote learning if mandated by the state due to COVID closures. Duration of school dismissals will be made on a case-by-case basis based on the most upto-date information about COVID-19 and the specific situation in your community. Students and staff should be prepared for durations that could last several days. Administrators will work with their local health authorities to determine duration of dismissals.

Keep Your Child at Home If Sick with Any Illness If your child is sick, keep them at home and contact your healthcare provider. Talk with teachers about classroom assignments and activities they can do from home to keep up with their schoolwork. Be prepared if your child’s school or childcare facility is temporarily dismissed. Talk with your employer about sick leave and telework options in case you need to stay home with your child. Consider planning for alternate childcare arrangements.

Immunizations TAOS MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS 2021-2022

Updates from the New Mexico Department of Health Exemptions from School and Daycare Immunization Requirements

T

aos Municipal Schools’ nurses ensure students are in compliance with the immunization laws by reviewing each immunization record.

Upon review, parents will receive guidance to ensure their child becomes and/or remains in compliance with New Mexico Department of Health requirements.

A summary of the New Mexico 2021-2022 School Entry Immunization Requirements includes: Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (DTaP/DT/Td) Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) Polio (IPV) Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR Haemophilus Influenzea type B (Hib Hepatitis B (HepB) Pneumococcal (PVC) Varicella (VAR) Hepatitis A (HepA) Meningococcal Men (ACWY)

A child shall be non-compliant with the New Mexico 2021-2022 school Entry Immunization Requirements if the child is eligible to receive but has NOT received the required immunizations on the recommended intervals. No child shall be enrolled in a school in New Mexico unless satisfactory evidence of immunization requirements has been provided. Any student with serologic confirmation of the presence of specific antibodies against a vaccinepreventable disease shall not be subject to immunization against that disease as a condition for attending school. The admitting official shall deem the student to be in compliance with the requirements of this regulation if: A statement, certificate or record signed by a duly licensed physician or other recognized licensed health facility stating that the required immunizations have been given to the persons is provided; or the exemption from immunization process is completed and proof is provided to the school district.

Please consult with your health care professional on specific age and dossing requirements for your child.

T

he New Mexico Immunization Exemption Statute (245-3) allows only two types of exemptions for children seeking exemption from required immunizations to enter school, childcare or pre-school. The two exemptions are medical or religious. If there is a medical reason for exempting, a signed medical exemption must be obtained from a duly licensed physician attesting that the required immunization(s) would endanger the life of the child.

If there is a religious reason for exempting, the child’s parent/guardian must ask an officer of the church to write a letter on your behalf stating that you are a member of the church, and the church uses prayer or spiritual means alone for healing; or if access to a church officer is not possible, then the child’s parent/ guardian must complete the Certificate of Exemption Form. The form requires a statement of the religious reasons for requesting to have a child exempted from immunization.

The law does not grant immunization exemptions for philosophical or personal reasons. Once a completed, notarized, original Certificate of Exemption Form is filed with the Department of Health, the Department has up to sixty days to notify the parent/guardian if the request is approved or denied. If approved, the parent/guardian will receive two copies of the original form with a clear “Approved” box checked, a signature from an officer of the Department, and an expiration date. The parent/guardian must take the Approved form to the child’s school. If denied, the parent/ guardian will receive a letter from the Department of Health explaining that the request is denied, and that the parent/guardian has the right to file an appeal with the Department of Health Cabinet Secretary. A process for appeal will also be included.

The School Breakfast Program provides cash assistance to states to operate nonprofit breakfast programs in schools and residential childcare institutions. The Food and Nutrition service administers the SBP at the Federal level. State education agencies administer the SBP at the state level, and local school food authorities operate the Program in schools (USDA).

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) ensures that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. This summer, USDA plans to serve more than 200 million free meals to children 18 years and under at approved SFSP sites (USDA).

National School Lunch Program The National School Lunch Program is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946 (USDA). http://www.fns.usda.gov/nslp

By providing breakfast/lunch to all children at no charge, we are hoping to create a better learning environment for our students. Numerous studies and practical thinking all point to the realization that hungry children cannot learn as well as children who are fed balanced meals. The school breakfasts and lunches follow USDA New Meal Pattern guidelines for healthy school meals. The CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) cannot succeed without your support. Please encourage your children to participate in school meal programs. All meals will be served to all students at no charge regardless of income eligibility status.

Afterschool Snack Program (ASP) The National School Lunch Program offers cash reimbursement to help schools serve snacks to children in afterschool activities aimed at promoting the health and well being of children and youth in our communities. A school must provide children with regularly scheduled activities in an organized, structured and supervised environment; include educational or enrichment activities (e.g., mentoring or tutoring programs). Competitive interscholastic sports teams are not an eligible afterschool program. The programs must meet State/local licensing requirements, if available, or State/local health and safety standards. All programs that meet the eligibility requirements can participate in the National School Lunch Program and receive USDA reimbursement for afterschool snacks.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to students in participating elementary schools during the school day. The goal of the FFVP is to improve children’s overall diet and create healthier eating habits to impact their present and future health. The FFVP will help schools create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices; expanding the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience; and increasing children’s fruit and vegetable consumption (USDA). http://www.fns.usda.gov/ ffvp/fresh-fruit-and-vegetable-program

FEATURE STORY By Taylor Hood

Lessons from the past, plans for the future As the new school year kicks off, educators look to cast off the fear, but keep the lessons. Back to school The pandemic might not be completely behind us, but the oddity that was the 2020-2021 school year is thankfully in the rearview mirror. Much has been made (and for good reason) of the changes people were forced to make to their lives to stay safe from COVID. That includes people working from home, wearing masks in public, and – most importantly for the kids and young adults in our schools – learning remotely. But what are our schools taking away from the pandemic? Surely not all of the new policies warrant reversal now that students are returning to the classroom full time. Thankfully, according to Lillian Torrez, Taos Municipal Schools Superintendent, educators and administrators have no intention of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. So what exactly are Taos schools keeping from the pandemic policies, and what is being jettisoned? Well, the schools are putting in the work, planning for a return to normalcy, but also preparing for the future. For example, sports are back! Student-athletes will once again be able to join their teammates on the field/court. BUT, schools are also beginning to put some time and pride into the future of their esports programs, something that surged in

popularity as the pandemic raged on and competitive students found remote ways to channel their love of the game. Here’s what Taos teachers, administrators, educators, and staff have been planning during the summer vacation. Technology Technology is always evolving, of course. But sometimes it is forced to take a major leap forward. Such was the case with our schools over the last 18 months. Notebooks were replaced with laptops; pens and pencils with keyboards; chalkboards with PowerPoint. Now that kids are returning to the classroom, what is to become of the technological changes implemented by Taos Municipal Schools and surrounding districts?

“We are going to continue using technology,” said Torrez. “Every student will have their own laptop, which is something we didn’t have before COVID.” According to Torrez, depending on age, the students can either take their laptops home or store them at school. Torrez also confirmed that the district will continue to provide technical assistance and equipment repair for all students. “Probably the biggest thing that will stick, which we never would have done if it weren’t for COVID, is we are creating the Taos Municipal Schools Online Academy,” said Torrez. “The kids who were successful last year online, they can continue to do online, if they want. That option is open for kids that did well.” continues on page 54

continued from page 52

The grant for the academy was submitted in early July and the decision is still pending, but Torrez is hopeful. “The cost was way more than we thought, which is fine, but we can’t pay this part of it through [the American Rescue Plan].” For the students returning to the classroom, Torrez said laptops will still be provided and that the district has spent the summer repairing and replacing last year’s computers. “So every student will have a working laptop.” Torrez also expressed concerns that a laptop won’t do much good for students if they don’t have internet access. Therefore, the school district will continue to pay for the monthly internet access for all of its students. In the end, Torrez said the technological advances that took place during the pandemic were one of the few positives. So why get rid of them? Safety The pandemic saw a drastic need to increase safety measures in schools. That eventually led to a total shift to remote learning, but that doesn’t mean local schools were resting on their laurels. They implemented a number of safety measures that included sanitation stations throughout the school and required social-distancing for anyone on school property.

Additionally, Taos Municipal Schools “It’s an equality issue. The school district pays over $10,000 “Every kid we get vaccinated is one a month to provide internet access in less chance of another kid getting the homes of every student. (By the way, Though Torrez is concerned for all great work, everybody!) students, she said the district will focus on 6th grade and up. As of press time, “There are so many little things that

we don’t think about that cost money, and we are able to keep all of that going for our students,” she said. Another example is food service. According to Torrez, the district will continue providing free meals for those in need. But what about the concerns around learning loss, considering that students were remote learning for an entire year? “We are working on learning loss,” said Torrez. “We are doing learning enhancement, afterschool programs, and tutoring. Our plan is to expand everything. And then the same for the online students.” All of this means spending money. Torrez has a plan for that also. “We are going to pay for it using [the American Rescue Plan]. That’s what it’s there for right?” Have fun and learn a lot So welcome back to school everyone. Much has changed in the last two years(ish), but not all of it is bad. And superintendent Torrez, and all of the folks at our local schools, have been working diligently to make sure students get to come back to a safe and fun environment. “We love every single one of our students,” said Torrez. “They are all so amazing. And we have incredible teachers who just want to meet the children’s needs.”

Get vaccinated! New Mexico announces partnership to provide free vaccinations for students.

Taos schools and administrators aren’t the only ones looking to get students vaccinated in an effort to return to normal. The New Mexico Department of Health and Public Education Department announced in July, a partnership with local pharmacies to provide back-toschool COVID-19 vaccinations for students 12 years and older. Participating pharmacies have

committed to giving free COVID vaccines without appointments from July 15 to Aug. 15. “New Mexico schools are eager to welcome students back for a safe, healthy new school year,” Public Education Secretary Ryan Stewart said. “To that end, it’s critical that children get all their required and recommended immunizations well ahead of time, and that includes the COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 12 and up. We are so grateful to New Mexico pharmacies for making this as easy as possible for parents and families with convenient walk-in hours for COVID shots.” New Mexico is one of the leading

states for COVID vaccinations in adults and officials are looking to keep that momentum going with children. “New Mexico has led the nation in adult vaccinations, and now we encourage parents to get their children vaccinated as quickly as possible,” said DOH Cabinet Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins. “Every New Mexican who gets vaccinated is taking a step to protect themselves and their loved ones – and helping prevent the virus from doing further damage.” Note: CVS and Walgreens will service walk-in patients anytime their pharmacies are open.

My Life as an MVHS STUDENT I GO TO SCHOOL FOUR DAYS A WEEK, TUESDAY – FRIDAY. My classes meet at different times during the week for longer class periods allowing time for investigation, discussion, and exploration. My teachers facilitate my personal creativity. I am encouraged to explore academically, physically, and artistically. At MVHS I am expected to be the source of my own learning with the teachers as a guide. My teachers learn with me. No bells ring to tell me when to change classes, no halls to navigate. Instead I walk outside, take in the mountain view and get a breath of fresh air before my next class. I own my education: leading parent conferences, articulating my educational triumphs and goals. My thinking is challenged on a daily basis through collaboration with my peers, and coursework through pre-AP and AP, and UNM Taos Dual Credit. We all bring something to the table every day. Since my classes are small, my teachers can listen to my ideas and questions as part of regular classroom conversation. My learning is not bound by the physical classroom walls. Learning takes place in connection with the greater community. 58

I am so happy to be joining you as your new chancellor. As we are returning to the campus, we will all have adjustments to make. We have to get used to being around more people again and interacting with others. I encourage you to be extra patient with yourselves and each other. Things may take a little more time. It will take a little bit to get used to traffic, to more people, to sound again. I invite you to pay attention to what you and others are feeling as you’re adjusting to returning to campus. Students are at the center of our work. It will be great to see students back on campus and continue to serve students in the ways that will best meet their needs. Our joy and our calling is empowering our students with education to make a difference in their lives and their families' lives. Mary Gutierrez, Ed.D. Chancellor UNM-Taos

WHY UNM-TAOS Many people choose UNM-Taos as a path to broader horizons and a better income, a career change or simply the personal pride that comes from committing to a challenging task and following it through to a successful conclusion. Parents, grandparents, and siblings come to UNM-Taos to serve as positive role models, knowing that firstgeneration college students make it easier for the next generation to follow. Some new arrivals to Taos see the UNM-Taos community of learning as a way to get to know the region and its people better, while others want to get that first degree under their belt in order to move on to a four-year university. Location

The spectacular, four-season vistas of Taos Valley and the Sangre de Cristo mountains are an inspiration to students, faculty, and staff. Why leave town when there is so much to experience here? You will understand how tens of millions of well-placed dollars can transform the student experience.

Affordable

At $78 per credit hour, we are one of the most affordable higher education choices in the state. That’s less than half the cost of most four-year public universities, and when it comes to the private and for-profit universities, well, they aren’t even in our league. Combine this with a robust scholarship program, financial aid, and the opportunity to live at home (we’re the only higher education choice within a 50-mile radius) and you’ll soon see why UNM-Taos is a wise economic choice.

That personal touch

We pride ourselves in offering small classes, because in education a close, one-on-one relationship between student and faculty simply works the best. FEATURE STORY By Taylor Hood

Rise of the gamer Sports in our schools may have been interrupted by the pandemic – to say the least – but that doesn’t mean the competitive fire went out of the athletes. They simply had to get creative. One major example of that creativity is the rise of esports. Taos area esports teams took off this year. For the uninitiated, esports is simply (often team-based) competitive video gaming. At least two local schools saw their esports teams hit the virtual field this

season: Taos High School and Taos Academy Charter School. And Taos Academy even found success, placing high in the state tournaments under the leadership of Coach Cal van Willigen. “The bright spot of this season would have to be winning the first match of our quarterfinal matchup,” recalled van Willigen. “One of our rookie players, Marcus Froeschle, was able to pull off an amazing ‘Penta Kill’, the equivalent of a Grand Slam, to clinch the first game of our Bo3. We went on to win the Bo3 and we competed in the semifinals where we were unfortunately eliminated by the very tough, Early College Academy esports program.”

In the end, Taos Academy Charter School placed third in their division. “As the 2020-21 school year started we enrolled for the 2020 Fall Season,” said van Willigen. “We were able to compete from home despite being a 100-percent virtual campus. This most recent 2021 Spring Season has been our most successful by far! We are competing against other NM schools in our classification (A-3A). Still competing virtually, our students were able to finish in the three spot for both League of Legends and Rocket League during the regular season.” Heading into next year, van Willigen said he expects more team members and to win it all.
