f you’re a newcomer to town, “welcome to Taos.” If you’re merely a newcomer to the pages of 2013 Taos Winter/Spring Visitors Guide, then let me say, “welcome to a whole Tina Larkin new ballgame.” Andy Jones For those of you who have seen previous incarnations of The Taos News’ winter/spring and summer/fall visitors guides, you will notice some things have changed. For one, we have gone to a smaller format; secondly, the entire 160 pages of this guide, the largest such publication in the entire state of New Mexico, are glossy. This has been an exciting transformation for those of us here at The Taos News. And we hope it’s just as exciting for our readers and advertisers. There are several reasons for this format change, not the least of which has been comments from tourists and newcomers that the old guide was a little bit large to be carrying around in your car, or backpack. Additionally, it makes it easier for local businesses, such as hoteliers and

bed and breakfasts to send the guide in the mail to potential visitors. And a big reason for us was, “we can.” Who wouldn’t want to make changes to a publication that make it better? The glossy paper gives us better color reproduction and extends the shelf life of the magazine. Now, with that explanation of sorts taken care of, let me tell you about the meat of this guide, the contents at hand. Every year, it’s our pleasure to brainstorm and then deliver stories of interest for visitors, newcomers and locals that get to the very heart of a very special season in Taos. This year’s collection of stories and features provides a balanced and informative look at what winter is all about in Taos. There are more esoteric pieces that try to explain the feeling of the season, and what makes Taos such an amazing place. And of course there are even more stories that have so much information, you might want to take notes (of course, since the guide is easier to carry around, you don’t have to). So, while our intent has always been the same (to bring you information in an enlightening and entertaining way), we now have a better vehicle with which to drive that mission home. We hope you enjoy the ride.

Winter is the season of Taos Andy Dennison

Y

es, spring splurges when life re-emerges, when leaves sprout and grasses green. Summer can be flip-flop, laid-back happy, with hot days and cool nights. And, fall’s luster of mountain-slope yellows and reds does inspire. To be sure, the off-seasons in Taos can fool us all into forgetting that it is, in its essence, a mountain town. Which is to say: it is winter that defines Taos. Be it a Taoseño or tourist, rancher or restaurateur, winter lays a trip on all of us. It’s something you must get ready for. If you come to Taos as the snow begins to fly, you’ll see the signs: n Snow boots and Carharts. n Snowboards atop Subarus. n Snowmobiles strapped to flatbeds.

n Snowplows on pickups.

Behind the scenes, the onset of winter propels the town to shift gears. Locals tune up their chainsaws and sight in their shotguns before heading to the hills. Homeowners load up on caulk and weather-stripping. Rafting guides stow away their dry bags and give a call up to the ski valley to be sure they can get their winter job back. Meteorologically, Taos gets its hibernal weather by mixing a base elevation of 7,000 feet, on a seat at the bottom of the 200mile San Luis Valley and a pocket in the 12,000-foot Sangre de Cristo Range. Storms generally come in from the north or west, bringing moisture from the Pacific Northwest. Typically, they bluster into town with chilling temps and a few inches on the ground. Then, they bash into the mountain front, rise precipitously into the frigid sky, and proceed to dump their bounty upon the mountain slopes above town. See winter on page 34

The quirky nature of Taoseños doesn’t let up just because it’s cold outside.

A horse knows better than to just hole up all winter. After all, the sun always comes out and lets some grass poke up through the snow.

winter from page 30

Culturally, winter is when Taos ties itself together. Many of its most famed celebrations – New Year’s Eve at Taos Pueblo, the Lighting of LeDoux, the torchlight ski parade at Taos Ski Valley — come during the coldest months. Soirees and gallery openings cozy up inside, and kiva fireplaces are all aglow. On the social scene, the downtown shines more brightly, and people linger longer in grocery store aisles to catch up on the latest gossip. Breakfast spots resound with the swish-swish of ski pants, and restaurants and bars blaze into the night as red-faced skiers trades stories with leather-necked locals Economically, winter has brought good times to Taos. Up the Río Hondo canyon, Taos Ski Valley is all about wintertime. Founder Ernie Blake knew what he was doing when he picked this notch in the Sangres to put a ski area. On average, more than 300 inches of light powder snow fall on the slopes, trails, chutes and bowls around Kachina Peak. More than 700 folks collect a paycheck from TSV or its business neighbors. Down below, ski shops and rental outlets profit from winter’s largesse. In some sense, as Taos Ski Valley goes, so goes Taos … at least in the winter. But for many who live here, or visit for awhile, it is winter that also tests our mettle. It is during the long, cold months when the power flows down from mythical Taos Mountain and forces many of us to confront our existence here: “Should I stay? Or should I go?”

Geraint Smith

And then, just as we are packing up and heading south, it snows. They wake up one January morning to find every viga in town gently crowned with the fresh stuff. Winter’s fluff sits atop adobe’s muscle. In the early stillness, before the winds arrive, the new snow tentatively feathers each cottonwood branch and briefly brightens the grey-green chamisa. Alpine and desert merge. Sky meets Earth.

The duality that is Taos emerges. It’s then when you say, “I think I’ll stick around for a bit longer.” You extend your B’n’B reservations another week. You pay another month’s rent. Or, you let your bosses know that you won’t be coming back to work any time soon. Why, they ask? Because you’re in Taos, and it’s wintertime.

raditional art is wellestablished in Taos, but there’s an edgier side too. For instance, last September, more than 20 local artists and organizations participated in ISEA, an international art festival that explores edgy themes. “Traditional works still have their place,” says coordinator Nancy Zastudil. “But in order for Taos to be sustainable as an artists’ community, I think you have to be on the edge.” Fortunately, many Taos artists are happy to step into uncharted areas. Susan Dilger’s TaosEdge offers clothing and other items bearing edgy designs by local artists, such as Chipper Thompson, Dan Enger and Richard Lagro. “Taos has always attracted edgy, quirky, eccentric people,” says Dilger. “We need to celebrate them and keep this spirit alive.” Trish Sereda, of Raw and Edgy Deerskins, started designing deerskin See Edge on page 46

Gov. Bent Museum a trove of interesting treasure

I

By Joan Livingston

n January 1847, Charles Bent, the first governor of the New Mexico Territory, was scalped, stripped naked, and then killed by a mob protesting American rule during the Taos Revolt. His home, where this tragic episode took place, is now the Gov. Bent House and Museum, a privately owned museum that features artifacts from the Bent family and a collection of old items, many connected to New Mexico’s history. Tom Noeding owns the museum, which is on the New Mexico Register of Cultural Properties and National Register of Historic Places. Noeding’s parents, Otto and Faye Noeding, bought the building in the 1950s. The Spanish Pueblo Revival/Hispanic Vernacular style structure, built about 1835, previously contained private apartments. The museum opened in 1959 — a joint venture of Otto Noeding, who was keen on history, and his friend Don Shockey, a teacher from

Mountainair, N.M., who was interested in archeology. The museum is not set up as a historical home although people can see the hole in the wall through which Bent’s wife and children escaped. The long-handled iron poker and spoon used to dig the hole hang beside it, a gift from the Bent family. There are artifacts from the family such as the chair Bent gave to his brother-in-law Kit Carson, who returned it to his widow, and a piano brought to Taos by an oxen team. Clothing and other items from the Bents are also on display. Surprisingly, most of the museum’s artifacts have nothing to do with Bent but are interesting nonetheless. Among them are: numerous Native American baskets, pottery and arrowheads; stuffed animals including a bear and a freakish eight-legged lamb; doctor’s instruments; a collection of antique barbed wire; and a 45-star American flag. Many were gifts from supporters of the museum. Noeding, who started working at the museum when he was in eighth grade, said about 5,000 people visit each year, most of them interested in history and the story of Gov. Bent. “If he wasn’t a governor, he would have been famous for Bent Fort and as a trader on the Santa Fe Trail,” Noeding said. “He had been governor for three months.” Bent owned a number of wagon trains on the Santa Fe Trail, plus trading posts in Santa Fe and Taos, where he had dealings with early mountain men. He traded supplies for furs and buffalo hides. Bent, his brother William, and Ceran St. Vrain built Bent’s Fort in Colorado, which was a trading place for Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians, and trappers. The Tina Larkin fort was the only large settlement on A bronze sculpture bust the Santa Fe Trail between Missouri and of Gov. The museum has a gift shop, which includes handmade items by local people, including craftsman from Taos Pueblo. The buffalo and replicas of Pueblo dwellings, created from micaceous clay, are notable. The Gov. Bent House and Museum, located a block north of Taos Plaza at 117 Bent St., is open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in summer and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in winter. The fee for admission is $3 for adults. Game on: the best places to watch sports in the Taos Area

W

inter in Taos is a great time to be outdoors, but some days you just have to stay inside and watch the game, whether it be NFL action, a college bowl game or some hoops or hockey. Fortunately, there are more than a handful of places in the Taos area where you can watch the game while you grab some food, have a beer and enjoy the company of fellow fans. The following list is by no means comprehensive, and it’s also good to call ahead to see if a venue will be showing the game you want to see.

Casa Los Córdovas 330A Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Taos (575) 751-9600; casaloscordovas. com Casa Los Córdovas undoubtedly has the most televisions in town. Games always going Saturday and Sunday.

El Camino Cantina 122C Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Taos (575)758-1779; elcaminonm.com Not a sports bar, per se, but if they are showing what you are looking for and you have a hankering for one of their famous cocktail infusions, then all the better.

Five Star Burgers 1032 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Taos (575) 758-8484; 5starburgers.com Five Star has only one TV, placed behind the bar, but if they have the game you’re looking for, you can’t beat the food and happy hour specials.

KTAOS Solar Center/Station Bar 9 State Road 150 (the road to Taos Ski Valley) (575) 758-5826, ext. 206; ktaos.com Two conveniently located TVs, and a well-timed daily happy hour (4-6 p.m. daily) make KTAOS a great option for game watchers on the Ski Valley road.

Martini Tree Bar Upstairs in the Taos Ski Valley Resort Center (575) 776-2291, ext. 1285; skitaos. org/mountain/resortcenter.php Boasting the largest TV in the Taos area, and several smaller ones, Martini Tree is a great place to watch the action, especially while taking breaks from some runs at Taos Ski Valley.

Taos Ale House 401 Paseo del Pueblo Norte (575) 758-5522; taosalehouse.com The Ale House has three TVs (2 42inch, 1 60-inch, with NFL Ticket) in a comfortable, intimate bar with great selections of craft brew made onsite, and around New Mexico.

Taos Mesa Brewing Company 20 ABC Mesa Road, toward Río Grande gorge bridge (575) 758-1900; taosmesabrewing. com Though developing a following because of the live music and craft brews, this new brewery and venue does show some games too.

Bull O’ the Woods Saloon Kitchen 401 E. Main St., Red River (575) 754-2593 A full bar, $6 breakfast and lunch options (not to mention NFL ticket) makes Bull O’ the Woods the place in Red River. A group of people watch a game at Casa los Córdovas. Tina Larkin

rom alpine comfort food to New Mexican staples, visitors to Taos Ski Valley have a full plate of dining and drinking options to pick from. Consider this is a quick primer on where to go when you’re up the valley.

Opt for the Optimator The Bavarian Lodge and Restaurant, mid-mountain at the base of the Kachina Lift, is a go-to for lunch and dinner and is enormously popular for a late afternoon beer. Riders standing on Kachina Peak can look down on the Bavarian’s sunny deck 2,300 feet below and almost taste the 36-ounce stein of German beer waiting for them at the end of the day’s last run. If you’re going for a brew, the locals’ choice is often the dark Optimator (preferably pronounced with a Schwarzenegger-esque accent), served with a smile by the lederhosen-clad waitstaff. A variety of 600-year-old beer styles from the Spaten-Franziskaner brewery in Munich is always available, along with an ample wine list. For grub, the Bavarian puts an emphasis on the authentic. The dining room interior, with its wooden beams and an enormous woodstove, oozes Alps-appeal. The dinner menu includes spatzle, wienerschnitzel and even escargots (that’s right, sautéed snails), and there’s apple strudel and triple-layer chocolate cake for dessert. Reservations are suggested for evening diners. The Bavarian can be reached by calling (575) 776-8020 or emailing bavarian@bavarian.net. For more information, visit www.thebavarian.com.

According to lore, original owner Tim Harter came up with the name when he “strayed” from the St. Bernard (aka the “big dog”). In 2008, the restaurant was sold to a group of Santa Feans who have since opened El Camino Cantina near Taos Plaza. KTAOS Solar Center: Conveniently fun

hile local breweries may be getting the bulk of attention in Taos these days, for a great happy hour on your way home from Taos Ski Valley, it’s hard to beat the Station Bar at the KTAOS Solar Center. Open since 2007 the Solar Center hosts big-name concerts in addition to being just a good place to hang out. The Chile Line, Taos’ local public transporation, runs shuttles to the Ski Valley several times a day, and one of the main stops is at the Solar Center. It’s free to park at KTAOS, so leave your car and save some gas heading up to the mountain. For more on the Chile Line, including a complete schedule, visit taosgov.com. For skiers and boarders, the Station Bar is also offering 1/2-priced appetizers to anyone with a lift ticket. The bar features domestic, import and craft brews and a complete wine selection, and the menu includes items like green chile stew, tacos, burgers and salads. Of course, being the world’s only 100 percent solar-pow-

ered radio station, the Solar Center always hosts great live music, either in the bar or in the Solar Pavilion, known for great sound in an intimate setting. A wide variety of performers, including rock, country, blues, world and electronic artists can all be heard there. Art and other special events also find their way onto the schedule at times. To stay updated on the upcoming events, visit ktaos.com. The views from the wide-open backyard are often reason enough to visit the Solar Center and don’t worry about it being too cold outside. The staff will have nice wood fires going on the lawn each night. So when you’re done having fun at the top, slide back down the mountain and relax. KTAOS Solar Center is the “gateway to Taos Ski Valley” located at the start of State Road 150 just north of Taos. Open 4 p.m. to close daily, with entertainment nightly. Meet quintessential ski bum, Wild Bill Lynch

I

By Andy Dennison

t’s an oft-said mantra of the young and the restless: “I think I’ll go be a ski bum for a couple of years, and then figure out what I want to do when I grow up.” They head to the hills, find a job at a resort, hopefully score a free season pass and cheap housing, and ski or snowboard to their heart’s content. Then, when spring comes and the lifts shut down, it’s time to get serious about being an adult. Maybe. And so it goes for one of the West’s great folk heroes: the ski bum. In Taos, Wild Bill Lynch has taken that story to its quintessential

end: He made a career out of being a ski bum. For the last 25 years, he has parlayed his passion into a lifestyle. “We ski bums get away with it … and don’t tell anybody,” Lynch, 53, said laughingly during an interview at his home in Valdez. “I still wake up on a powder day and get nauseated with excitement. We are all just a bunch of kids.” Raised on the beaches of San Diego, he learned to ski in Aspen in the 1970s. He landed in Angel Fire with his father in 1981. He gets credit for trying to “grow up,” because he ran the Pizza Stop restaurant, got married and divorced, and bought and sold a condo. But by the end of the decade, he was at Taos Ski Valley, teaching at the ski school, bunking in with multiple roommates and partying

hearty. As many of his ilk in Taos do, he worked as a rafting guide during the summers. When the aspens began to change, he’d call Henry Hornberger, at that time director of the ski school, and get his job back. By 1999, he shifted to the Boot Doctor ski shop ‌ and he’s been there ever since. The main perk of the job — ski breaks. “My passion has always been skiing, and it never made any sense not to do it,â€? he said. “Lots of ski bums have come and gone in Taos, gotten married, had kids, worked a job. But I’m still

single with no kids. Lynch has no cell phone or HD television. He does have a website for a vacation rental he built on his property by the Río Hondo and, occasionally, he checks his email. He cohabitates with his dogs and a black bear, and likes his beer cold. Mostly, he just hangs. He may get in some surfing and boardwalk skateboarding in San Diego but, as fall comes in, he heads back to the hills. He trades guided hikes to Kachina Peak for lunch at the Bavarian Lodge. Skis and snowboards designed for every rider, every terrain

L

By Cody Olivas

ong skis, short skis, stiff skis, soft skis, rocker skis ... the possibilities of what to slide down the mountain on are vast and they’re increasing every season. With so much technology packed in to today’s skis and snowboards, a good place to start the decision process is with terrain.

Are you a beginner? Shorter skis and snowboards are ideal for beginners because they’re easier to control than longer ones. Softer skis and boards are more forgiving too. Rockered boards are also great for beginners because with the shape bent upwards, there’s less of a chance of catching an edge and face planting into the snow.

bumpy obstacles. Softer sticks are also more forgiving, in case your tips or tails don’t quite clear a bump.

Want to get extreme? If riding the steeps is your passion, a top-ofthe-line set up is the way to go; when the consequences are high, there’s no room for error. Stiffer skis and boards tend to excel in the steeps because they reduce chatter at high speeds, making sure you don’t get bounced around.

Powder hound? When the pow is falling, rockered skis and

Do you like the park? It seems like today every company makes parkspecific skis and snowboards. Companies have found ways to load park sticks with pop, helping riders jump higher and catch more air. Since speed is always a critical factor to clear the knuckle of a jump, the bases of park sticks tend to super fast. Rockered technology thrives in the park because if you under rotate a spin, you’ll slide through instead of catching an edge and doing some cartwheels. To help you make that spin, however, companies blunt the tips and tails to reduce swing weight. Park boards also tend to be softer and thus more forgiving on boxes and rails. Stiffer sticks, however, tend to better for riding the half pipe.

Enjoy the bumps? Since moguls come at you fast and they keep coming, skis and snowboards with a lot of sidecut enable riders to turn faster down through the Left: Völkl’s new Kendo all-mountain ski: “the Kendo will take just about any skier from the bowls to the frontside and back with aplomb,” a press release states. Skis have come a long way since Taos Ski Valley purchased its first rental fleet from the Army’s 10th Mountain Division. The skis on the right, K2’s Obsethed, Seth Morrison’s pro model, are the longest skis K2 currently makes at 198 centimeters. Holding the skis is Taos Ski Valley employee Marty Lucero.

boards are kings on the mountain. The bent-up shapes float on top of the snow instead of diving under. Early rise in the tips and tapered tails also accomplish the same thing.

Want to ride it all? All-around skis and snowboards are also a staple in most companies’ fleets. These are usually great for people who want to ride some steeps, get jibby in the park and then bounce through the moguls. These sticks won’t be a specific fleet’s best at any one thing, but they’ll be the best choice to slay everything on the mountain

Wait, what was that? If you’re brain didn’t process all that, don’t worry. Ski and snowboard techs at stores and rental shops know their fleets and, if you tell them your ability level and what terrain you intend to ride, they’ll help find a board that’s ideal for you. Taos Ski Valley is also hosting demo days Dec. 21 and 22, enabling people to try out multiple boards and find what they like. Many rental shops also give demo customers the option to try multiple skis or boards so they can find the ride that’s best for them. No matter what terrain you ride, those 210centimeter skis aren’t the best choice anymore.

snowboard, and most frequently a ski tail, first to replace that one missing slat and ultimately to complete the entire assembly. Going hog wild and replacing both seat, backing, arms and footrest of an Adirondack chair (as seen at snowsource.com) suggests you either own a rental shop (with access to “lots” of old skis) or you bought your chair online. Few individuals have more than three old rides or pairs in storage they could chop up for a whole chair. Usually they sell them at a ski swap to help finance the new year’s edition.

Roadways On practically any road in mostly rural Taos County you can find crossed skis marking driveways of diehard-skier types, and you’ll find the odd arrangement of snow-ski fences here and there, a few lined up side-by-side or interspersed as decorative elements amid regular barbed wire or rabbit-wire field fencing. Signage is also another natural in snow country and typically advertises ski runs and ski lodges. Depending on how big you go, skis and boards are exactly what the boot doctor ordered. Check out frameitinskis.com for a wild array of just about anything you could imagine, plus a lot you never dreamed of. The do-it-yourself website scraphacker.com also has some great ideas, and shows you how to do it yourself. Courtesy Frameitinskis.com

Wall hangers In Taos, and most any mountain lodge the world over, you’ll find examples of ancient snow skis adorning lodge walls, complete with leather straps – the so-called barrel-stave skis of yore that fabled snowmen and women strapped to their sealskin mukluks to brave daily blizzards and ice floes. Next most ubiquitous in the ski lodge bar, hanging overhead or on the wall, is the famous “shot-ski” with any number of shot glasses (usually about six) positioned to hit as many bar customers seated next to each other, so to tip the ski, “shooting” tequila (or in Taos, Jäegermeister) all at the same time. Following that, ski wall racks with hooks for jackets or as shelv-

ing, often in bars, holding glassware or booze. And don’t forget coat racks, decorated trash cans, shed doors and roofing, house siding (well, maybe not), picture frames, ceiling fans, bird houses and much more.

Stock up now Actually, the uses of such highly water/weather resistant material is one reason to start now, hitting the rental shops, hunting for discards or hopefuls looking to get a few bucks at a ski swap toward their next ride. You just can’t lose.

The art of snowmaking

W

e were curious about the process of making snow, something that greatly extends the ski season here in sunny New Mexico. In order to get a rundown we turned to Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort general manager John Paul

Bradley.

1. Snowmaker: Snowmakers are the heart and soul of snowmaking. Working on a mountain side in the dark on slippery slopes in below freezing temperatures. They place equipment to maximize the snowmaking system. They make adjustments to the snowguns as temperatures change to maintain snow quality and adjust gun position to counter the wind.

2. Fan Gun: There are many types of snowmaking equipment. Shown here are fan guns. They have an onboard weather station, water temperature and pressure sensors. Data from sensors are compiled by the onboard computer and the computer adjusts water flow to maintain high quality snow.

3. Turbine: Used to throw the water in the air. 4. Air Compressor: Fan guns are equipped with air compressors. Compressed air is used to break up water droplets into very small water particles that can freeze very rapidly, becoming a nucleic for other water to attach to.

5. Water Nozzles: Water nozzles break up the water into small

droplets that allow the water to freeze quickly.

6. Weather Station: Onboard weather station that monitors air temp, humidity and wet bulb. 7. Water Hose: Delivers high-pressure water (110-500 psi) from the snowmaking pipeline to the snowmaking equipment. 8. Electrical Line: Provides 3-phase 480 volt electricity to the snow guns to run the turbine and compressor. 9. Plum: Where the magic happens. Within the plum water droplets attach to smaller frozen water droplets called nucleic (like dust particles in storm clouds). 10. Ambient air/humidity: We have to have cold enough temps to make snow. We can make snow at 28.4 degrees WET BULB. Wet bulb is the combination of ambient air and humidity. The way we make water freeze is by displacing the heat from the water. To do this water must evaporate. The dryer the air (low humidity) the easier it is to displace the heat of the water and make it freeze. 11. Hang time: Hang time gives us time to get the water to cool off and freeze.

12. Snow Whale: Over several hours of snowmaking piles of snow form. We call them whales. These whales of snow are like big refrigerators that stay cool during the day. So even if we have daytime temps well above freezing the piles only melt a little bit.

Chosen by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the 20 best small towns in America, Taos is a holiday paradise. Here are some of the many options that it offers to visitors and locals alike.

Begin the season in style The perfect way to get an extra-early start on your holiday shopping this year is to attend the Yuletide Arts and Crafts Fair, which will be held from Nov. 23 to 25 at the Taos Convention Center. This is a unique, personalized experience that allows shoppers to interact with the artisans and buy all sorts of handmade gifts.

There is a little bit of everything, from baked items to wool scarves and hats, and, naturally, home decorations. The Fair is a cherished local tradition that gives back to the community by supporting our talented craftspeople.

Improvements benefit beginners and families

ecause Taos is a mountain known world-wide for its extreme terrain, beginner skiers and riders tend to feel intimidated when they come to Taos Ski Valley. With that in mind, Taos Ski Valley installed a new lift and trails this summer, just to help beginners take the first step in exploring the mountain. The lift, along with expanded tubing facilities, a stunning outdoor music venue and a new airport shuttle, are helping Taos attract new guests and their families. The Pioneers Beginner lift, located east of the base of Lift 1, extends 1,400 feet up a gentle slope, ending at the Pioneers Glade subdivision below the bottom of North American. The lift serves three small trails, each intended as a stepping-stone for participants in the Ernie Blake Snowsports School. “Beginner skiers and boarders will find the new beginner area much less intimidating than the area at Strawberry Hill,” says Snowsports School Director Chris Stagg. “The new lift and See TSV on page 126

ed River Ski Area ended the summer season with a bang and plans to start the upcoming 2012–2013 winter season the same way. Guests can look forward to many new and exciting improvements and additions including: Main Chalet upgrades, new rental equipment, e-commerce, and Snow Coach Dinner Tours. The Main Chalet has many improvements, including all-new carpeting upstairs and a revamped kitchen and cafeteria area. Coinciding with the launch of an e-commerce website (which gives guests the opportunity to purchase tickets and rentals from the comfort of their homes), Red River has installed self-entry computer stations in the downstairs entryway of the Main Chalet, as well as touch-screen computers at the rental tech stations to eliminate paper work and long lines upon arrival. When guests purchase tickets and rentals from the e-commerce website, all they have to do is print out a barcode (containing all pertinent information) and bring it to the ski area. Upon arrival, guests can head over to the boot and ski tech stations where a rental tech will scan the barcode to get you set up with gear and on your way.

Red River takes pride in its snow-making and snow-grooming capabilities, and the resort has added a new snow cat, as well as several snow-making tower guns to its fleet. This allows the ski area to provide guests with snow when Mother Nature does not. New for this season is Snow Coach Dinner Tours. The dinner tours will be replacing Red River’s evening snowmobile tours. Guests will be able to enjoy a ride to the top of the mountain from the comfort of a heated Snow Coach; they will then be able to enjoy a delicious sit-down dinner at Tip Restaurant. Opening day is Nov. 21 and Red River will be offering “Deal Daze” weekends until the ski area opens daily on Dec. 14. “Deal Daze” offer guests great discounts on lift tickets and lesson packages. As in the past, Red River Ski Area will also be offering January Bargain Days, College days, Home School Week, Kids Ski Free/Stay Free, and Military discounts. Visit redriverskiarea.com for details and arrangements on all value programs. Take either the Platinum Chair Lift or Copper Chair Lift located in the middle of town to the top of the mountain and enjoy breath-taking views of the town and surrounding mountains, or grab a bite to eat at Tip Restaurant. Red River trails are accommodating to skiers and snowboarders of all levels and River Ski Area is a great place to learn, with ski and snowboard programs for children and adults. Try some winter tubing after the ski day is finished, or head over to the Lift House Bar & Grill for après ski, Evening Rail Jams and Torchlight Parades. —Staff Report

Every President’s Day weekend, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort unveils its trademark snow castle, the only of its kind in New Mexico. Typically two to three stories tall with slides, steps, tunnels and plenty of places to play, the castle is a mecca for kids and adults alike. It typically takes at least one week for mountain staff to build the castle each year, and no two creations have ever been identical. The castle opens the Saturday of President’s Day weekend as part of Sipapu’s annual February Fun Fest celebration, which includes games, scavenger hunts, costume contests, a kids parade and more.
