BLURRING THE BOUNDARIES Studio: thesis Type: wildlife center Site: kruger national park, sa Materials: rhino, cad , vray, photoshop, illustrator This thesis investigate architectural issues and whether they can be addressed in a way that does not disrupt natural habitats. Is the built environment capable of promoting a design that is beautiful, innovative and accommodating to wildlife? We must design in a way that leaves a minimal footprint on nature, while still creating spaces that are accommodating to people and to the wildlife that inhabit the landscape.

EXTERIOR RENDER

My proposal is a floating wildlife center in the heart of South Africa’s Kruger National Park. The center, made up of detachable programmatic volumes, creates a space for researches to observe and learn about animals in their natural habitat. Placing the wildlife center on the water leaves a minimal footprint on the site and creates a natural boundary between humans and wildlife. It’s prefabricated structure allows for minimal constriction impact and creates flexibility, allowing the volumes to move up and down the river or be taken away completely over time. The façade is made up of sustainable bamboo shutters, allowing the building to be completely open, allowing for sun and airflow, or completely closed, sheltering it from rain and heat.

TULANE CITY CENTER Studio: 5th year option studio Type: outfiting interior space Site: new orleans, la Materials: rhino, cad , vray, photoshop, illustrator This studio called for the interior build-out of a newly renovated building that is now home to the Tulane City Center, a non for profit organization looking to revitalize community through design. The studio was broken up into groups focusing on different parts of the building. My group was the storefront. The space called for flexibility, a space that could be transformed for different needs. There were three different interventions designed for the storefront My focus was on a rotating wall. The 15’ x 10’ wall was constructed out of steel, lumber, galvalum and homasote. It was mounted to a pole allowing for rotation, with a welded on wheel attached to the other side. The idea for the wall is the ability to make smaller spaces within the larger space, creating areas for more intimate meetings, pin ups, small lectures, or even creating a nook for gallery shows. During this semester we constructed one of the walls. It was received so well by the staff that a fellow student and I were asked to build a second one within the space the following semester.

CANAL STREET HI-RISE Studio: 4th year option studio Type: multi purpose tower Site: new orleans, la Materials: rhino, cad , vray, photoshop, illustrator This project called for the design of multi-use tower located on a 3,000 sf triangular lot in the CBD of New Orleans. The challenge for this project was to find a solution that would combine the separate programs (business, residential and commercial) under one skin, while dealing with the restrictions of a small site. Analytically looking at the site three main ideas immerge; The break in the grid between the French quarter and the warehouse district, the different accesses to the site by walking, driving, and boating, and the different views that one obtains from the site at different heights. Instead of using the triangular site as the footprint for my design, I wanted to look at how to give the ground floor back to the public. To do so I created the smallest footprint possible, while still allowing for the circulation of the program. Five simple moves allowed me to lift the program from the ground floor to allow for larger, rectangular floor plans above. The break in the form and rotation of the building shows the definition between the residential and business programs while creating an interlocking space that holds the shared programmatic spaces.

CIRCUS OF THE SUN Studio: 4th year option studio Type: cirque du soleil headquarters Site: new orleans, la Materials: rhino, cad , vray, photoshop, illustrator Cirque Du Soleil Headquarters called for a building that could accommodate offices, training space, workshop space, and a public path that moves through out the building allowing visitors to get an inside look at the depth of the building and the magic of cirque. Cirque is a grandiose performance and the program requires large open spaces with grand heights. This proposal takes advantage of the large spaces and creates on interior world and experience within the building. This project explores two different types of grandiose spaces: cave and canyon. The cave space houses the interior private circulation of the building allowing workers and performers to move through the building. The canyon spaces hold the large programmed areas and explore the idea of lightness and openness to the spaces. The public/ private path goes through both types of spaces allowing visitors to see the inner workings of cirque while still being separate and unobtrusive to the daily workings of the building.
