OCTOBER 2022
Covering stories and people who bend the rules and break the stereotypes, in the smallest or the biggest way in this issue of Inn Dino.

Through this issue of the magazine we have tried to bring to you stories of people who were fearless enough to break barriers. People who were told to be one way even though that wasn’t true to themselves, how they broke away from these boundations society constricted on them, for them. Everywhere there are people who want to break free from stereotypes, expressing themselves through art, flms, clothing and doing everything to be able to express their true selves.
I am a human being, who carriers the culture, morals and values of my birthplace. I have been conditioned and molded according to my surroundings and my thoughts are provoked based on what I have put my faith in. Although today, I feel globalization has brought a signifcant change in my belief system and enlightened me about my own existence. My cultural values are still my foundation but the idea of constraining myself in a man-made system of set rules and inherent thinking, deeprooted by our ancestors, pinches me to the core. Therefore, this issue talks about all our unheard, grass root heroes, who have fought their way through, to accept-respect their individuality out of the unreal boundaries set by society.
To break out of a stereotype is not easy. Part of it involves knowing, or researching what others believed us to be in the past, what they believe now and what they see for the future. And we must do it systematically, by specifc audiences that are important to us. Although this seems like a lot of work, an easy way to start is to support and stand for those people who are fghting from society to live a normal life.
Our society has preconceived gender roles that limits our ability to grow and prevent us from making individual choices about our lives. Dressing up in clothes and styling ourselves in ways that expresses one’s gender identity refects a part of us. There are stereotypes about how people are expected to act, speak, dress, and conduct themselves based on their sex rather than how they feel. Some unconventional choices of breaking these stereotypes by a brown male infuencer and a well known drag queen helped us in understanding the innate drive of self expression.

A motivational speaker, leadership coach and behavioural trainer by profession. However, apart from this, his true passion is imagining, exploring and then articulating new realms of philosophical fction and spiritualism through writing. He always had an inner and deep urge to explore the life of Monks, Yogis or Sadhus and especially those living and meditating in the Himalayan Mountains which got awakened especially when he travelled to the base of the Kailash Mountain. His book “Aghori : an untold story” is a story based on
The path to being an Aghori sadhu is a culture dated around the start of human civilization. Aghori Sadhus are said to be on a path of Spiritual evolution, awakening and enlightenment, so to unite with the ultimate Lord Shiva. They have evolved beyond the materialistic world, due to their intense meditations and sadhanas. It has unlocked the potential of their body, mind, soul to another dimension of living. They have understood the mature aspects of life, perception of death, having no desire, no needs, no regrets, no materialistic infatuations. It’s a tough path to follow and Aghori Sadhus give themselves
/ sanskrit defnition /
AGHORA: Fearless
AGHORI: He/she who is not fearful
Aghori sadhus have a very diferent take on life. They believe they live in world full of nature-living beings as a gift from god, a world that doesn’t need to rely on man-made systems. Therefore, Aghoris don’t prefer killing living organisms, plants or animals, for their own need. Being naturalists, they eat dead human fesh to survive. Eating something that nobody likes to eat is a form of sadhana that brings them closer to nature.
Aghoris live and meditate on cremation grounds generally at midnight. They like being in an isolated space to avoid publicity or any social presence during their sadhanas. Aghoris reside at such a paranormal driven place to meditate and open their bodies to energies beyond our conscious. Being such fearless beings, they easily connect to other paranormal activities at the cremation grounds, alien to living presence.
Aghori Sadhus are generally seen carrying a human skull along with them. It is used as a “Yantra“ or tool to chant mantras, to meditate and organise with spiritual beings. The skull also acts a bowl to eat and drink from for their survival. Simultaeneously, they also tend to carry a human thigh bone which acts as a walking stick.
The real advancement of any human being is when they let go of any desires and needs. Aghori have a diferent philosophy of life. They have a need for spiritual pleasure, rather than intellectual, physical or materialistic needs. Which has led them come to the point where they have controls over certain elements of nature. Today they are more advanced in the terms of mental power, physiological changes, intellectual ability and in physical appearance.
Ya-all (Yawol), an Imphal-based NGO launched India’s frst all Transgender football team that not only plays football but also battles prejudice and stigmas deep rooted in our society. Ya-all was founded on May 17, 2017, it is a youth-led network of LGBTQ people and allies. They launched the football team at the Queer Games event in Imphal, during the colourful festive season of Yaoshang, March 8.
The spirited team was formed when Saddam Hanjabam, Ya-all founder, attended a sporting event located with the annual fve-day Yaoshan Festival in Manipur in 2018. He noticed that the teams were automatically split into two strict columns. Hanjabam noticed how Manipal known as the sports capital of India, itself turned out to be equally involved in a system of dualistic gender distinctions, while completely excluding the queer community. Being a queer himself, Hanjabam has seen frsthand how difcult it is for people to accept themselves and also have their families accept them. Getting out of the closet is no easy task, thus, Hanjabam wanted to raise social awareness and represent the queer community to the society.
The NGO has now sowed the seeds against queerphobia and sexism in the sports community by assembling a strong team of 14 highly talented and passionate members. They have created a safer environment for Manipur’s queer youth, combat stigma and discrimination, and care about their mental health and the well-being of many. “Our purpose is to help them enjoy their identity and provide a platform to prove that they can do things together. This will help change our
society’s mindsets towards the third gender”. Chaki, a team member, states that the difculty a trans-person faces when it comes to pursuing a sporting passion is redundant and prejudiced. This rejection and isolation from the sporting community goes against the true essence of sportsmanship. They hope other players can come out and compete, improve and build a strong transgender team.
At Ya-all, there are weekly sessions where trainers and volunteers come to train the players and help with their ftness and style of play. They also use the crowd-funded money to provide travel allowance for the queer players coming from far and wide, while also providing them refreshments during a tournament. Not only that, several brands like Fast & Up, and Decathlon have also come and shown support for this great initiative for queer people during tournaments, and the United Nations has also recognised the organisation as they are working towards making a diference in the queer community.
Midfelder Suma, a security guard at a threestar hotel in Imphal, stated how people have started to accept him. His colleagues and boss fnally shows interest in his sporting talents and even if I have an unscheduled training day, my supervisor grants me time of. In a way, the most important service that Ya-all provided these young people was giving them families. Players who are often mentally stifed by the family they were born into feel more at ease with each other on the pitch, even if they are tired from strenuous exercise.
We are young and Trans- we have no identity, we have no power, we have no will, The eyes of our society is blurred with the soot of stigma and discrimination. Yet still, we continuously walk that difcult path uphill.
But all thanks to Hanjabam and his ticket to the Annual festival soccer game, when he noticed the distinctive binary grouping of only Male and Female, He said something- Oh wait! Where are my community of LGBTQIA’s ?
We deserve to be a sportsperson on a larger scale,
And so he whispered, “ I think it’s time for a societal upscale”.
Manipur, being the powerhouse of sports, Allowed trans-youth to refuge in the football courts, Forced to hold their grounds against distinctive facial expressions and targeted racial slurs, Until Ya-all, launched them as a team, overdue for many years.
Seeds are now sown against queerphobia and gender discrimination, Ya-all has created a safe environment and mental support for the queer youth with no hesitation, Once who were never allowed to play football as they carried the Transgender tag of degradation, Are now enjoying their freedom and platform, due to that little prejudice fxation.

I have been called....
I remember an incident when I was 10 years old. I was dancing at my aunt's house and suddenly my grandmother came in and saw me dancing. She got so furious at me, held me tight and said - have you ever seen a prostitute dance? Who does that, who says that to a 10 year old? The moment i heared those words, i felt guilty, i felt humiliated as if i had committed a crime. Eventually my parents came to know and since then I have been beaten up by my father throughout my childhood, to the point where once my ankle got fractured. As a Muslim boy, I was completely forbidden from dancing or being myself at all. I was asked not to entertain people because that's not what my community has allowed us to follow.
Rather i should force masculine attribiutes in my personality, pretend to be rough and tough, have boyish habbits and dreams.
For a major part of my childhood I felt like a boy without spine, no confdence, unsure, isolated and unrealetd to the rest. I was burdened with societal, parental pressure- the shame I brought to my family put me through a ray of guilt. I was being compared with my siblings, reminding me how they are far better for being a robot to my parents orders. i was innocently being feared through my religious customs- It is haram for men to dance which will be punished by you going to hell.
“ You're a sissy for doing such a thing, my mother said, as if being a sissy, a girl, is a bad thing and ironically she is a women herself. “
Howsoever, at the age of 18, I couldn’t give up on my dream of becoming a dancer. No matter how much i tried to make my parents proud they never would until i live up to their dreams and desires, which meant to foreve be as a living dead. This is when I decided to leave my house. It was the best decision of my life as since I became more confdent in my being, accepted my self and fought for my rights as a dance enthusiast. Soon I found my passion for belly dancing. Belly dancing is actually said to be a Homemade dance, as women used to belly dance to celebrate their body and beauty in an enclosed space.
Although interestingly, Belly dance form was actually inspired by the dance of the Rajasthani Kalbelia tribes. Earlier when the silk route allowed foreigner traders to trade through India, they passed through the Kalbelia Tribal areas. The traders enjoyed their Hip movements along with slight Belly dance to such an extent that eventually lead to the start of belly dancing in the west. Which is why i enjoy Belly dancing since it initially taught me to be more confdent, self- accepting and then the skills to a wonderful graceful dance. Even though i still confront many professional and cross dressing stereotypes, I have mastered how to flter the hate-speech and remember the rest.
The 25-year-old from India broke all the clichés and proved to the world that “dance is art and art is genderless. Cross-dressing has been around for centuries, so why stereotype someone who came out of a closet? From being labeled a prostitute, transgender and eunuch to being recognized as one of India’s frst male belly dancers, Eshan Hilal has come a long way.
What created this unconventional Indian woman who risked being frowned upon, to say the least, by challenging the defnition of sexuality in the modern world?
Seema connects us to the hidden aspects of our roots and culture through storytelling as well as traditional folk costumes. Her boldness and ease on a topic so ‘sensitive and dark’ especially from a woman intrigues everyone to take a peak at her.
One of her major goals in the revival of Oral Indian Literature is re-telling the stories and changing the way girls are viewed there, from being suferers to being sturdy and powerful. So that her stories might be of great help to rural and urban girls.
Seema’s work essentially is about reviving Indian mythologies, particularly the Mahabharata, Ramayana, lectures on Tantra, the Mahavidyas, the Kama Sutra, and the Bhagavad Gita. Seema’s work is associated with the UNESCO mission for Endangered Oral Traditions. She makes use of Stories to unfold attention to positive issues, particularly women’s issues. She believes that “Stories have such a lot of aspects and so many functions-I need to see them respected and ofer a means of subsistence for the tellers.”
Coming from a family where gender does not defne your identity, she was appalled at the gender inequality she encountered - what society expects of you as a married couple. She tried to overcompensate by developing traits that are alien to her, such as becoming a "joker" within the group. She felt left out and had to either continue to be a victim looking for happiness in others or start looking for happiness within herself. Life changes and so do we. A wife and mother of two sons had a desire to change the world for the better when their daughter was born.
“I began exploring female role models only to discover the myth of female stories - the identity of a woman is a perfect fgure of tolerance and beauty. ‘Imperfections’ make her not a ‘good’ woman and there were no stories of a woman having the right to her own sexuality. Her body was always someone else’s property.”
"The core of the being that defnes a woman is boxed for someone else to own.”
Women's stories have never spoken of rights over their own bodies. Needless to say, an Indian sage himself wrote the Kama Sutra. And ironically sex education has become a taboo in
India, one of the most populous countries.
“I am determined to change attitudes. I want people to stop looking at sex as punishment or a weapon of war. Women (or men for that matter) are not property. We have the right to belong to ourselves. I want us to learn from the wisdom of ancient Indian sages who wrote about the importance of pleasure and its beauty as the path to spiritual attainment.”
“We tell many stories about the good women. The moment you have a woman who stands up for herself, we judge her; she is a fshmonger and a nuisance. The stories we tell and the stories we silence often say a lot about who we are.”
To the 61-year-old sexually positive mythologist and storyteller, the reading of Kamasutra, a comprehensive ancient treatise on sex, Pleasure and relationships was a coincidence, almost 20 years ago. Anand was irritated to fnd that the novels she studied as part of her advanced English course at LSR Delhi were often written by white men. There were no Indian stories in the curriculum, let alone stories written by and for Indian women. David Lawrence’s book Lady Chatterley’s Lover(published in 1928) was ponderous at
best, lacking depth and holistic understanding of a female body These stories were “predictable, only listed scandalous afairs and rough sex.”
This led Anand to the Kamasutra, the deeper she delved into its world, the more she noticed how Indians steered clear of stories that spoke of a woman’s right to her body. “The book is written for men: how many hours should they spend getting a massage or how should they decorate their bedroom?” But it is only the second section in which the author addresses both men and women.” 20 years later, Anand has made a pioneering efort to expand the Kamasutra and breaking jaded stereotypes about intimacy that it promotes. Before her Instagram, aimed at making make sex more accessible went viral, she published a book “ The Art of Seduction” in 2017, a book positioned as a guide to good sex in the 21st century . Five years later, the hateful comments are still an endless barrage, often aimed at her age.
“To this day I still receive death threats. There are always people telling me to think about my death and do puja instead of talking about sex.”

These artists go one step further and construct relatable identities using their physical features and attire. They create an identity that they believe is inside of them using cosmetics, clothing, and other random objects. Drag as an art form may not be as prevalent in India, but it is also not a subdued whisper. It is raucous, vicious, and incredibly bold.
“There are a lot of preconceived notions about the vast and beautiful community of transgender. It’s assumed that trans people are only capable of prostitution or begging or sex work but that midset needs to change. I have transgender sisters and brothers who are doctors, lawyers, teachers, medical professionals and in the corporates. You see people like me who are in the entertainment industry and fourishing. It’s not because our gender is this or that. It’s because our talent speaks louder”, says 31-year-old Sushant Divgikar a.k.a. Rani Ko-HE-nur, an LGBTQIA+ icon and a Drag Queen.
Sushant, was born and raised in Mumbai’s outskirts, began his career with youth television channels and quickly built a niche for himself with his vibrant social media presence and varied opinions. He encountered countless obstacles in his career due to his sexual identity, however, he hasn’t let it stop him. Divgikr competed as a drag queen in the country’s singing competition, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, which aired on national television in 2018the same year India’s Supreme overtuned the Section 377 statue, which criminalised homosexuality.

“It’s a lot like telling the world exactly how you envision yourself without having to use any words,”
In all that Shantanu Dhope does, he’s a little extra. In adorning his face with batwing eyeliner or neon eyeshadow, he sees makeup as a tool to express himself. Like every brown boy in India, Dhope grew up believing that makeup was meant only for women. And yet, he found himself enamoured by the freedom it ofered. “It’s a lot like telling the world exactly how you envision yourself without having to use any words,” he says. He remembers that frst post: “It was a look of me wearing an orange smoky eye and a nude lip. It was my go-to look at the time.” Having found an inspiring role model in trans beauty vlogger Nikkie de Jager, Dhope is now telling the
world that boys can wear makeup too. The colours Shantanu Dhope wears and the roles he adopts go beyond ordinary to make him a not only a makeup artist, social media beauty infuencer and model, but a bona fde pathbreaker too.
“I studied for a diploma in civil engineering and pretty soon realised it wasn’t for me. Soon after that, I completed a course in makeup artistry in Mumbai. It is always exciting to learn about the frst step that people take towards living a truth they want to live unapologetically, for Shantanu, that came in the form of a snatched smokey eye. “When I frst wore makeup, I was working in retail at a mall. So walking around wearing a full smokey eye

Sam Madhu began painting and drawing while still in school in Chennai. She found her classes to be uninteresting and frequently flled her school notebooks with sketches. She studied at the esteemed Parsons School of Design, where she also acquired her passion for digital art. She also worked as an art director for social media campaigns.
The way Madhu depicts women in her work is feminism. Most of the women in her Instagram page are curvy, full-fgured women with stomach folds. Some are bizarre, such as women being engulfed by the cosmos or numerous tentacles. Others are disturbing—a woman gives herself a pill bath. Other examples include a lady having an identity
problem while searching for the ideal profle image and a woman indulging herself. They are powerful photos, and a lot of people have written to her to tell her how they have impacted their lives. Inviting Madhu to picture a world without gender, we challenged her to explain gender through this neon-colored universe.
I’m shifting my attention away from contentious subjects that I used to represent when I was younger and more rebellious and instead concentrating on 3D, crypto, and digital art. According to the young artist who is currently on an art grant in Berlin.“At that time, I felt like contrasting the treatment of Indian women in modern society with how they were revered as goddesses.” Her current work features future cyberpunk culture and dystopian high-rise cities with prominent Indian infuences, including the faces of gods and goddesses and Indian script.
Priyanka Paul, a Mumbai-based artist, adopts the aesthetic of goddesses from throughout the world and transforms them into feisty, contemporary feminist women. Paul’s works are accompanied by prose or poetry.
The digital art journal, vent, and inspiration for a twenty-one-year-old waging the good fght is artwhoring. Strive for equitable access to resources, opportunities, and representation. Priyanka Paul intends to contribute to the ongoing fght against racism, misogyny, and the establishment of gender norms by
expressing her ideas through the one media she has consistently used since she was a child—quite spectacularly, we should add. The scribbles in her sketchbook gradually transform into digital works of punk and pastel art that aim to normalize certain taboos encountered by women, the LGBTQ community, or a certain race.
Paul uses her art to critique misogyny and the patriarchal system. She discusses the sex education crisis and the objectifcation of
women in the nation. She discusses caste, body positivity, and mental health. She urges people to consider how oppression and social conditioning afect various facets of society. She also discusses the ofensive terminology used to refer to women. The artist has endured criticism and even threats because of her contentious pieces.
“My art is a very signifcant aspect of who I am and how I express myself, and I make it clear that it is not just for aesthetic purposes. My greatest desire for my art is that it will enlighten, educate, and, if possible, empower. She states on her website, “These are the things that I, as a person, also stand for.
Kruttika Susarla, an Indian illustrator, utilises her work to challenge prejudices about sexuality and gender in a positive way through her self-initiated political comics and extensive client portfolio. Her campaign for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia portrayed people of various gender expressions hanging out and having a good time, while her icon-based images made a beginner’s toolkit for LGBTQ+ people seeking access to the legal system far more understandable than your ordinary impenetrable tome. Kruttika tells It’s Nice That, “As an image maker, I regard my duty as an interpreter of the world around me.” In doing
so, I also recognise that it has the capacity to shape perception.
After graduating from design school, I lived and worked in the paradoxical city of New Delhi, which had an impact on me and, consequently, my work. The city’s historic structures, which still seem to be singing Ghalib’s poetry, coexist with its contemporary concrete and glass jungle. The city has a long history of being a centre of political upheaval and transformation. I have had a variety of daily experiences as a result of living amid these contrasts that have piqued my interest in gender, representation, and rights problems. Some of my recent work
“Art has the power to break barriers, move people, help them organise and dissent. Thus, a politically informed artist becomes an effective medium to bring about an impact in society through their work by focusing on this urgency”Artist brings change Artist brings change Artist brings change Artist brings change Artist brings change Artist brings change
have been motivated by the desire to highlight these important issues. She happens to portray all that occurs both inside of her and around her. She is renowned for her skillful depictions of the concepts of gender, identity, and sexuality. She fnds healing in art, and she often illustrates love and loss. When she experiences an extreme life phase, it almost seems natural for her to grab her creative supplies. She acknowledges that accepting and embracing one’s situation has a healing efect. When asked about the role
of an artist in afecting society, she responds, “Being honest with my personal experiences and sensitive to the unique environment around me has helped me fnd my voice.” More than ever, there is a pressing need to push for social change in light of the unstable political climate around the world, hate crimes, and violence against women. Art has the potential to unite people, break down barriers, and inspire dissent. By concentrating on this urgency, a politically aware artist becomes a powerful tool for changing society through their work.
