Feather Fall for solo Flute (2022)

Program Notes (subject to change) Feather Fall’s title comes from the spell of the same name in the table-top role-playing game, Dungeons and Dragons. In the game, the spell allows a player to fall at a slower speed, preventing injury to the character. Feather Fall moves freely through various key centers, contrasting a lyrical melody with a wide palate of extended techniques.

Feather Fall was commissioned by Shannon Lotti.

Performance Notes Feather Fall was written to contrast the tonal characteristics of the flute by contrasting lush, lyrical melodies with a variety of extended techniques. To showcase these contrasting colors, the piece utilizes a meterless, aleatoric framework. As opposed to individual measures, any bar lines only indicate the end of a major phrase/section and the beginning of the next. While some passages are marked with specific changes in duration such with the occasional accelerando or ritardando, most of the responsibility for musical pacing is left to the discretion of the performer.

As a general rule of thumb, each phrase should last no shorter than 10 seconds. This guidance need not be followed strictly; Phrase 13, which contains a relatively smaller amount of content, might last less than 10 seconds. Conversely, Phrase 24, may take a much longer amount of time.

Because of the lack of bar lines, accidentals only affect specific notes.

Repeated pitches will therefore all have their accidental shown.

Multiphonics in Phrase 28 have their fingering provided underneath the staff.
