INCREMENTAL GROWTH

The 21st street Rainbow Bridge is a historic bridge in the heart of downtown Birmingham. Since closing vehicular traffic due to structural issues, the bridge now gets occupied by people riding their bikes, viewing the trains, watching sunsets, and walking their pets with a view of Downtown Birmingham.

Our design focuses on re-envisioning the bridge as a comfortable pedestrian connection over the railroads in the heart of downtown. This helps create opportunities for future development by making the city more walkable.

ASSETS & OPPORTUNITIES

The Bridge is located in Downtown Birmingham. It is within walking distance of multiple anchor points within the city which we call ‘Assets’. These assets play a part in how the bridge could be absorbed by the city and it also informs the design itself.

The conversion of this vehicular bridge into a pedestrian one also opens up possibilities for new developement in vacant lots around the bridge, which we termed as ‘opportunities.’ Developement of these vacant lots are essential to the design as it supports the programs on the bridge and the rest of downtown area in wider context.

DESIGN FOCUS

The design of the bridge revolves around 2 elementsThe Strcuture and The Walkability of the bridge. The team designed an elegant solution that structures the bridge at the bottom, and becomes an enclosure, shading and seating element on top of the bridge.

The developement of nearby parcels into buildings that services the bridge level as well as the ground level is an incremental step that creates interior and exterior rooms. The interior rooms provide enclosure and programs that can be accessed from the bridge. The exterior rooms become outdoor areas with the views of the city.

DOC SPIER’S GATHERING PLACE

Adaptive Reuse | Spring 2021

Doc Spier’s Gathering Place is tucked away in the historic Hillside neighborhood of LaGrange, Georgia.

Ran as a grocery store and a sandwich shop from 1932 to 1953 by Wilbon T. Spier “Doc,” This now open-air building covered in beautiful vines and trees is maintained as a gathering place for the community by DASH

18
19

The approach towards the existing open-air structure on site was to display the lives lived by the building and the potential it has to once again become a place which brings the community closer together.

A Trajectory where the existing rustic textures and the walls taken back by nature tells a story about what has been and the introduction of the new materials and programs represents the future of the gathering place.

5 Office spaces which can be leased or rented for start-up businesses or formal meetings - with a Community Garden and a playground for children designed to encourage social gatherings are situated on the south side of the existing structure.

The indoor gathering place and the café timidly sit inside the existing structure while retaining its charm and textures to increase human engagement and allow for events to take place in any weather.

2ND AVENUE HOUSE

Housing

| Fall 2020

Partnered with the City of Charleston Planning Department, the project explores ways to revitalize low-income housing in the west side of Charleston.

Situated on a skinny interior lot (Lot 12), in Charleston WV, these long and narrow houses/units are designed to feel open, light and comfortable.

The proposed units have 2 private courtyards each - one in the front which acts as a transition zone between the interior and the exterior space and the other courtyard splits two bedrooms in the back of the house.

These courtyards, while being an ideal environment for relaxation, are connected to all major programs in the house, ensuring sightlines beyond the rooms and sufficient light entering the building while maintaining the privacy of the inhabitants.

WOOD COMP

Pavilion | Spring 2020

The Alabama Forestry Student Design Competition (Wood Comp) focuses on understanding the advancement of wood as a building material and its role in architecture.

The proposed pavilion abstracts the gently sloping landscape nestled between the trees on site in the form of its roof. Designed to be sited at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Auburn, the pavilion hosts up to 20 people to engage in activities such as presentations and workshops. The structure holding the roof in place defines the gathering space and the private meeting space. The breaking of the roof and the walls at intervals creates interesting light patterns inside the structure during the day.
