I had an amazing time at the American Economic Association Annual Conference in New Orleans. Attended thoughtprovoking sessions on the intersection of economics, race, and morality, and enjoyed catching up with friends Rachel Brooks and Tracey Freiberg during their paper presentation.

Provided assistance for the Critical Race Methods: Practices, Prisms, and Problems course offered by Kimberly Williams Crenshaw during Columbia’s J-term session.

I engaged in a critical dialogue about building a human rights economy in New Orleans at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center.

This event fostered a deeper understanding of the economic challenges and opportunities within the local community.

The first month of this year was marked by active participation in events organized by the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy, an esteemed organization founded in 2021.

These events not only deepened our understanding of the interplay between economics, race, and political economy but also aligned perfectly with the Institute's mission to promote economic inclusion, civic engagement, and equity.

THE STATE OF BLACK EDUCATION In February, 2023, I hosted "The State of Black Education," a virtual event that not only celebrated Black History Month but also served as a platform to review and discuss the findings of my dissertation. The event was marked by a series of enlightening and culturally rich presentations, aligning with the theme of educational progress and challenges within the Black community.

The event opened with an in-depth review and insightful analysis of findings on the state of Black education. This segment shed light on various aspects of educational attainment, challenges, and opportunities within the Black community, stimulating thoughtful discussions among attendees.

In celebration of Black History Month, the event featured a segment dedicated to highlighting significant educational facts related to Black Americans, including historical achievements, current statistics, and future trends. I offered a comprehensive view of the educational landscape as it pertains to the Black community through a special rendition of "This is America," with a focus on educational themes. This version of the song was adapted to reflect the realities, struggles, and triumphs of Black Americans in the realm of education.

The event was graced by the presence of renowned poet Sunni Paterson, who delivered an original poem. Her powerful and evocative poetry captivated the audience, beautifully weaving together themes of education, identity, and resilience within the Black experience.

"The State of Black Education" not only celebrated the rich history and contributions of Black Americans in education but also fostered a deeper understanding of the current educational landscape. The combination of academic insights, cultural expressions, and artistic performances made it a unique and unforgettable experience, reinforcing the importance of continued dialogue and action in the pursuit of educational equity and excellence.

advanced placement African American Studies Media Campaign Black Curriculum was rampant in the news cycle in February 2023.

For the first time, the Advanced Placement curriculum was diversified to include an African American Studies curriculum that was scheduled to be taught in select US high schools.

In an effort to make Advanced Placement (AP) Black History content more accessible and engaging to the public, I spearheaded a social media campaign in partnership with the Samuel Dewitt Proctor Institute at Rutgers University. The campaign focused on breaking down barriers to educational content, particularly in Black history, and ensuring that it was available to a wider audience.

At the heart of the campaign were visually striking and informative collages. These collages were meticulously designed to encapsulate key learning expectations and content from the AP Black History curriculum. Each collage combined historical imagery, infographics, and concise textual elements, creating a compelling and educational visual experience.

INSTITUTE on RACE, POWER and POlitical Economy The month of March marked a significant transition into a pioneering role as the Inaugural Education Stratification Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy. The primary focus of this fellowship is to curate a robust body of research centered around education disparities. This involves an extensive study of various factors that contribute to unequal educational opportunities and outcomes, especially in urban settings.

FACULTY FIRST LOOK During the month of March, I participate in the NYU Steinhardt Faculty First Look program, an enriching and comprehensive initiative designed to prepare aspiring academics for their future careers in academia. The program covered a wide range of topics, providing in-depth training and invaluable insights into the world of faculty recruitment and academic career advancement.

The program provided a platform to network with NYU faculty, postdocs, and graduate students, allowing me to present my scholarly work and receive constructive feedback. I learned about various postdoctoral programs offered

by NYU and received access to continuous faculty development opportunities, ensuring ongoing growth and learning in my academic journey.

One of the highlights was the chance to meet potential faculty mentors who offered tailored advice and guidance on career plans, helping to chart a clear path for my future in academia.

The course is renowned for its rigorous curriculum and is aimed at equipping researchers with the skills and knowledge necessary for conducting high-level academic and field research. The program featured lectures and sessions led by experts and guest speakers from various research fields. Their insights and experiences offered a real-world perspective on the challenges and advancements in research.

AERA annual conference I attended the prestigious annual conference hosted by the American Educational Research Association (AERA), a significant event in the field of educational research. This conference presented an excellent opportunity for professional development, networking, and supporting the presentations of esteemed colleagues in the field (Ayan Ali, Khrysta Evans, Virginia Downing, CJ Greer, Alethia Russell, Chezare Warren, and Venus Evans Winters). The conference served as an ideal platform to expand my professional network, fostering connections that will support future collaborations and knowledge sharing.

PARSONS SCHOOL OF DESIGN In May of 2023, I obtained a Master of Science degree in Data Visualization and Information Science from the prestigious Parsons School of Design. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in my academic and professional journey, signifying a deepened expertise in data visualization and information science. My studies at Parsons School of Design significantly enhanced my analytical and critical thinking abilities, essential for deciphering and presenting complex data effectively.

NYC DOE ARCHIVES During the summer, I spent a significant amount of time researching in the New York City Department of Education Archives, delving into the rich history of the curriculum used in the city's schools. This endeavor was part of a broader effort to understand the evolution of educational practices and policies in one of the world's most diverse urban education systems.

By examining these historical documents, I gained insights into how the curriculum has evolved in response to changing social, political, and cultural contexts. This included shifts in educational priorities, pedagogical approaches, and content emphasis.

Part of my research involved comparing past curriculums with current educational practices. This comparative analysis helped to highlight trends, progressions, and recurring themes in the city's approach to education.

My time in the archives revealed how historical events and societal changes have influenced the development of the curriculum. This included responses to civil rights movements, demographic shifts, and economic transformations.

SUMMER ANNUAL CONFERENCE I am immensely privileged to collaborate with a dedicated team of Black employees who are passionately engaged in supporting schools through curriculum development. We conference together, and we grow together. This experience was centered around creating and enhancing educational materials to better serve diverse student populations, particularly focusing on inclusivity and representation.

THE BLACK COLLECTIVE My Curriculum Crew and I retreated to North Carolina this year.

Greensboro was a deliberate choice to connect with the truths of history. The city is known for its pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, particularly the Greensboro sit-ins, which served as a profound source of inspiration for our work. Immersing ourselves in the local history, visiting historical sites, and engaging with community members provided us with deeper insights into the significant events that have shaped social justice movements.

Our joint efforts were centered on developing curricula that are culturally responsive.

THE POSTCARD PROJECT The idea was to create a series of postcards that members could exchange, each featuring significant historical figures, events, or cultural symbols relevant to Black history.

This concept was intended to serve as a medium for both education and connection.

Segregation in Curriculum: Learning from Greensboro Our Visit to Greensboro was a profound lesson in the significance of historical truths in education.

The experience has been instrumental in shaping our approach to creating educational materials, ensuring they are both informative and reflective of the diverse tapestry of historical experiences and narratives.

RESEARCH PROJECT Broadly, this research project focuses on examining the contemporary landscape of Black education in New York City. This comprehensive study aims to explore available resources that discuss the educational experiences, challenges, and achievements of Black students in one of the most diverse urban settings in the United States.

ASA Conference I had the opportunity to attend the prestigious American Sociological Association (ASA) Conference, a key event for professionals and academics in the field of sociology. This conference brought together a diverse group of sociologists to discuss the latest research, trends, and challenges in the discipline.

CRT & Education Popups I organized and hosted a series of pop-up meetings focused on Critical Race Theory (CRT) in education at Brandeis University. These meetings were designed to facilitate discussions on the application and implications of CRT in educational settings, as well as to outline the course content that would be delivered over the fall semester.

The series of meetings helped build a community of individuals who are informed about and interested in the discussion of CRT in education, fostering a network of support and ongoing dialogue.

The format of these sessions encouraged interactive dialogue, allowing participants to share their thoughts, ask questions, and engage in meaningful conversations about CRT. The meetings successfully raised awareness and understanding of Critical Race Theory among participants, clarifying misconceptions and highlighting its relevance in educational contexts.

The panel discussion titled "Teaching Reading in Contentious Times" offered a critical exploration of how current policies and practices are impacting teacher pedagogy, especially in the context of teaching reading. The panelists, comprising seasoned educators, policy experts, and academic researchers, delved into the challenges and pressures faced by teachers in today's politically and socially charged educational environment. Key points of discussion included the influence of standardized testing on reading curriculum, the increasing politicization of educational content, and the struggle to balance mandated curricular requirements with the need for culturally responsive teaching. The panelists also discussed the growing constraints on teacher autonomy and creativity, and how these impact the effectiveness of reading instruction. The dialogue highlighted the need for policies that support holistic and inclusive approaches to reading education, and for practices that empower teachers to foster critical thinking and a love for reading among students. This panel provided invaluable insights into the complex dynamics between policy, practice, and pedagogy in contemporary education.

Oxford Ethnography & Education Conference The Oxford Ethnography and Education Conference is an esteemed event that brings together scholars and practitioners in the field of ethnography and education. The conference offered a platform for presenting research, exchanging ideas, and discussing the latest trends and challenges in the realm of educational ethnography. A key aspect of my participation was presenting my research work.

NYU Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In collaboration with the Research Alliance for New York City Schools at NYU, I engaged in a series of team meetings. This collaboration was centered around sharing my research and methodological approaches in examining the teaching and learning of culturally responsive materials in educational settings. I shared detailed insights into the methodologies I employed in my research. This included discussing qualitative and quantitative approaches, data collection techniques, and analytical strategies tailored to explore cultural responsiveness in educational materials.

ASALH Conference I had the privilege of participating in the conference hosted by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). This event, renowned for its focus on African American history and culture, provided a platform for scholars, educators, and historians to engage in meaningful dialogue and share research. A key highlight of my participation was presenting my research, which delves into specific aspects of African American history and culture.

TAKE EM’ DOWN JAX I met, interviewed, and marched alongside Take 'em Down Jax organizers, a dedicated group advocating for the removal of systemically racist statues in Jacksonville, FL. This organization's mission is to address and rectify symbols of racial injustice in public spaces.

Research Project This research paper explores the complexities of implementing culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) in high schools through a series of in-depth interviews with school principals. The study delves into the challenges and obstacles these educational leaders face in adopting CRP, including resistance from staff and parents, the struggle to align CRP with standardized curricula, and the need for comprehensive professional development. The paper highlights the nuanced nature of integrating CRP into existing educational frameworks, underscoring principals' pivotal role in navigating institutional barriers and fostering an inclusive, culturally-sensitive learning environment. Through these interviews, the paper sheds light on the multifaceted process of transforming educational practices to better serve diverse student populations, offering insights into the potential pathways and strategies for effectively embedding CRP in high school settings.

Research Project Leveraging teacher narratives from interviews and focus groups, this research paper presents an in-depth examination of the lesson plans of teachers who are implementing culturally responsive pedagogy in their classrooms. The study aims to understand how culturally responsive principles are integrated into educational practices and the impact this has on teaching and learning outcomes. This project forwards the literature on praxis and curriculum policy implementation while underscoring the importance and complexity of implementing culturally responsive pedagogy in diverse educational settings.

Research Project This paper presents an insightful examination of the dismissal of three school personnel - two teachers and one principal - under allegations of utilizing critical race theory (CRT) in their educational practices. Through detailed interviews, the paper reveals the personal and professional ramifications faced by these individuals, uncovering the complexities and often misunderstood aspects of CRT in the educational context. The narratives of the participants highlight a broader discourse surrounding educational freedom, pedagogical approaches, and the politicization of curriculum content. This study not only sheds light on the challenges educators face in navigating controversial subjects but also raises critical questions about academic autonomy, the role of educators in shaping societal perspectives, and the impact of political ideologies on educational careers and school environments.

Research Project This paper provides a compelling analysis of the interplay between curriculum practices and education policy, using the legislation surrounding Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a focal point. It meticulously examines how the recent legislative measures against CRT have influenced shifts in educational practices, curriculum content, and teacher autonomy. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data on policy changes with qualitative insights from educational stakeholders, to unravel the complexities of these curriculum shifts. By documenting the direct and indirect impacts of CRT legislation on classroom environments, teacher strategies, and student engagement, the paper underscores the significant, often unintended, consequences of political interventions in educational frameworks. This research not only contributes to the understanding of contemporary educational policy dynamics but also highlights the critical need for policy decisions that consider the diverse needs and realities of educational settings.

EARN PLENARY In a plenary discussion on the evolving landscape of education policy and practices, I contributed insights into contemporary changes that are deeply intertwined with racial hierarchies and the distribution of power. My participation emphasized the critical need to understand and address these underlying dynamics to foster a more equitable and just educational system.

CRSEA CONFERENCE My participation in the CRSEA (Critical Race Studies in Education Association) Annual Conference involved presenting a paper on the implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy in urban schools, attending workshops on racial equity in education, and participating in panel discussions about the intersection of race and policy in educational settings.

Kyle Moore's presentation delved into innovative economic research methodologies, while David Radcliffe focused on the application of economic principles to address contemporary social challenges.

Research Project This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of education disparities in U.S. history by examining standardized assessments and curriculum content, particularly lesson plans, to trace the mechanisms used in determining academic achievement. Through a critical evaluation of standardized testing and curriculum development over the years, the paper highlights how these tools often reflect and perpetuate systemic inequalities in education. The study utilizes a mix of historical data, educational theory, and contemporary case studies to demonstrate how standardized assessments and curricula have been shaped by, and in turn, shape societal beliefs about intelligence, achievement, and educational success.

Research Project Using critical race theory as a lens, this paper explores the persistent issue of racialized stratification and the undercurrents of white supremacy culture in schools that have ostensibly adopted culturally responsive pedagogy. Through a series of in-depth interviews with teachers, the study reveals a dissonance between the principles of culturally responsive pedagogy and the ingrained systemic practices that continue to uphold white supremacy culture.

History of Education Conference At the History of Education Society conference, I immersed myself in the rich tapestry of educational history, engaging with a vibrant community of scholars, historians, and educators. PANEL ORGANIZATION At the HES Conference, I organized a panel with an exceptional set of scholars - Ayan Ali, Stephanie Joy Tisdale, and Mark White - on education disparities exacerbated by regional conflicts.

Research Project My research project, "Standardizing Criminality: The Politics of Achievement in NYC Schools," presents a comprehensive analysis of how standardized assessments in New York City schools perpetuate existing structures of social hierarchy. Through a critical examination of these assessments, I argue that they do more than measure academic achievement; they reinforce and replicate societal inequalities and biases. The project utilizes a blend of quantitative data analysis and qualitative case studies to demonstrate the disproportionate impact of standardized testing on marginalized student groups, particularly those from minority and low-income backgrounds.

PANEL DISCUSSANT "Race, Gender, and Economic Life in the US: Examining Disparities in Education, Employment and Wealth" offers an in-depth analysis of the intersectional disparities present in the American socioeconomic landscape. The study utilizes a multidimensional approach to explore how race and gender significantly influence one's experiences and opportunities in education, the workforce, and wealth accumulation. By examining statistical data, historical trends, and current policies, the research highlights the persistent educational gaps, employment inequalities, and wealth disparities among different racial and gender groups.

PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES My public lecture series, "The Underground Pages," delves into the often-avoided and taboo topics surrounding race, offering a bold and unflinching exploration of racial dynamics in contemporary society. Each lecture in the series tackles a different aspect of race relations, ranging from historical injustices and their ongoing impacts, to the subtleties of systemic racism and implicit biases in various social institutions.

Utilizing a mix of academic research, historical documentation, and current events, the series aims to uncover the under-discussed elements of racial discourse, encouraging open and honest conversations among diverse audiences.

Research Project My research project, titled "The Story of Us: An American Paradox of Pioneers and Patriots via NYC's US History Regents Exams," offers a critical examination of the narrative presented in the US History exams used in New York City's schools. This study meticulously analyzes the content, structure, and framing of questions in these exams to decode the underlying 'story' of America they convey to students.

By scrutinizing various exam sets, the research highlights how specific events, figures, and periods are emphasized, while others are marginalized or omitted, shaping a particular historical perspective.

CRT and EDUCATION This fall, I launched the inaugural course "CRT and Education" at Brandeis University. The course explores the theory and writings of CRT theorists and how those theories can be used to understand contemporary educational disparities.

IN COMMON: ROMARE BEARDEN AND NEW APPROACHES TO ART, RACE AND ECONOMY The symposium I attended brilliantly leveraged the artwork of Romare Bearden and contemporary artists as a dynamic lens to explore and discuss race and economy. This gathering of scholars, artists, and economic theorists provided profound insights into how artistic expression reflects and critiques societal issues related to race and economic structures. Through various sessions and discussions, the symposium unpacked the complexities of racial identity, economic disparity, and their representations in art, drawing on Bearden's legacy and the works of current artists. This experience profoundly influenced my academic journey, inspiring me to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to scholarship. It underscored the power of art as a medium to convey complex socio-economic themes and reinforced the importance of integrating diverse perspectives and methodologies in my research to address multifaceted societal issues.

This year has been transformative for my scholarship, with each conference and experience contributing significantly to the evolution of my research methodologies and academic perspectives. The diverse array of events I attended, ranging from conferences on Critical Race Theory to symposiums intersecting art and socio-economic issues, have enriched my understanding of various disciplines and their interconnections. Engaging with experts from different fields, participating in dynamic discussions, and exploring groundbreaking research have broadened my intellectual horizons and deepened my commitment to bringing marginalized narratives to the forefront. These experiences have not only reinforced the importance of a multi-faceted approach to research but have also highlighted the necessity of incorporating diverse methodologies to capture the complexity of societal issues.

Inspired by the power of art and the richness of life's experiences, my interdisciplinary approach has become increasingly nuanced and robust. I find that art, with its ability to transcend conventional boundaries and communicate profound truths, serves as a vital tool in my research arsenal, enabling me to unearth and amplify voices that have traditionally been relegated to the margins. This artistic inspiration, coupled with my engagements at various academic forums, has empowered me to challenge traditional notions of intellectualism and break new ground in my field. My work continues to evolve, as I strive to dismantle barriers and redefine scholarship, ensuring that it remains inclusive, dynamic, and reflective of the diverse tapestry of human experiences.
