Keep up with Tanglin’s vibrant arts events happening around the campus. We hope that the events we have planned in this Term 2 & 3 Arts Calendar will be widely enjoyed by our community. While details are correct at the time of publication, they are subject to change due to the changing nature of the rules that relate to live performances and events.

DRAMA

Chicago: Teen Edition

16-19 January, 6pm, BBPH

Set in the jazz age of the roaring twenties, Chicago: Teen Edition tells the story of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, two women searching for stardom while also being tried for murder. Convicted and sent to prison, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess," Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame, fortune, and acquittal.

Dr Jennifer Hartley's Confessions

Weeks 7 & 8

Dr Jennifer Hartley will explore the effects of trauma on survivors with workshops on the theories of Augusto Boal and the Theatre of the Oppressed, and manifest her lessons with Confessions - a series of nine-minute performances based on ‘our deepest secrets’.

Frankenstein (student-led performance)

20 March, 4.30pm & 6.30pm, Chandran Studio

This is a 45-minute adaptation of the Mary Shelley classic Frankenstein, featuring performers from Years 7 to 12. It's the story of a timeless classic filled with complex relationships, moments of laughter, moments of agony, and a reflection of society as it continues to change. Is the Monster the villain? Is it the doctor? There's only one way to find out.

Musical Showcase (student-led performance)

16 April

This is our third annual Musical Showcase night, showcasing the singing talents of our Senior students and their favourite musical numbers.

Moana (Years 7-9 musical)

20 & 21 May, 6pm, Drama Studio

This Disney musical follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within.

An Evening with Briana Corrigan & Friends

24 January, 7pm, Rehearsal Room

We are delighted to be welcoming Belfast-born singer-songwriter Briana Corrigan to Tanglin. Best known for delivering Beautiful South's most successful single, the chart-topping Number 1 and Brit-award winning A Little Time, Briana has 'one of the most distinctive voices in pop' (Time Out) which 'could melt icebergs at 50 paces' (VOX). This is a rare opportunity to hear Briana's 'stupendous vocal' (NME) up close and personal as she entertains with an evening of story and song. Expect Beautiful South classics, nestled among her own beautifully crafted songs and some unique takes on traditional favourites, all combining to create an intimate, heartwarming, emotional and joyous evening. As the songwriter of two critically acclaimed albums, this is an event not to be missed.

Battle of the Bands

25 January, 6pm, BBPH

The annual battle is back! Students from Years 7 to 13 will compete to see which bands will be crowned 2024’s Champions. All bands will receive coaching from the experts at Songwork International, and winners will have the opportunity to record with them! This year, we also have the honour of being joined by Briana Corrigan of The Beautiful South as our guest performer. Come along to the Berrick Performance Hall for the most exciting musical event of the year.

An opportunity for musicians of all ages and abilities to perform in front of a small, supportive audience. These concerts are designed to support our musicians as they develop performance skills and confidence.

Brass Spectacular with the Desford Colliery Band

2 February, 7-8.15pm, BBPH

Get ready for a musical extravaganza as The World Famous Desford Colliery Band takes the stage at the Berrick Performance Hall. Experience a night of unparalleled brass brilliance as this world-leading ensemble brings to life the timeless charm of brass classics, enthralling film music, and much more. This is a rare chance to hear the emotive sounds of one of the best brass bands in the UK.

Tanglin Brass Community Day

3 February, 12-5.45pm, BBPH

Our first Community Brass Day for school-aged brass players of all abilities from across Singapore and Johor Bahru, Malaysia will be led by musicians from the world-renowned Desford Colliery Band. This funpacked day will include workshops, rehearsals, and brass demonstrations, culminating in a short massensemble recital for families and friends. Throughout the day the attendees will play alongside members of the Desford Colliery Band.

Formal Solo and Chamber Music Recital

28 February, 6pm, Recital Room

This formal recital, held in the intimate setting of our Recital Room, will feature a mix of soloists and small chamber ensembles, presenting a varied programme of music.

SEASAC Music Festival 2024

14-16 March, All Day, UWCSEA East Campus

The festival is to bring together, extend and enrich the musical experience of like-minded musicians through working with professional music practitioners in creating a large ensemble performance.

Cross-phase Bands Concert

19 March, 6pm, BBPH

An array of bands, from Gemini to Big Band perform arrangements of well-known pieces composed specifically for stage or screen.

Cross-phase Orchestral Concert

26 March, 6pm, BBPH

Our String and Orchestral ensembles, from Sostenuto to Symphony Orchestra take to the stage to perform arrangements of well-known pieces composed specifically for stage or screen.

Musician of the Year Finalists' Concert

22 April, 4.30pm and 6.30pm

The Finalists’ Concerts for the Tanglin Musician of the Year 2024 takes place in front of our esteemed judges! The two concerts see the final few musicians in each category perform to see who wins each class and who is ultimately crowned 'Tanglin Musician of the Year 2024'. The Intermediate Concert takes place at 4.30pm, followed by the Advanced Concert at 6.30pm.

Paul Phoenix's Visit

22-26 April

Paul Phoenix, two-time Grammy Award winner as member of King’s Singers and a vocal coach will be in Tanglin this week to conduct choral training with our Infant children and Year 12 students.

A Decade Through Five Decades of Songs

25 April, 6.30pm, Recital Room

Former King’s Singer and double Grammy Awardwinner, Paul Phoenix, will present an intimate evening of music and discussion at 6.30pm in the Recital Room. He will be accompanied by pianist Tim Frost, Director of Music at Junior King’s Canterbury.

Choral Concert

26 April, 6.30pm, Victoria Concert Hall

This concert is the culmination of a 5-day Choral Festival taking place throughout the school with special guest Paul Phoenix (former King’s Singer) making a welcome return to inspire us. Choirs and choral groups from across the schools will take place in a celebration of all things singing!

Year 5/6 Lunchtime Recital

6 May, 11.30am, Berrick Foyer

The Lunchtime recitals provide children with performance opportunities to share talent on their instruments with friends.

Formal Solo & Chamber Music Recital

8 May, 6pm, Recital Room

This formal concert will feature a broad range of musical styles and genres in the intimate setting of the Recital Room, performed by students from across the Junior and Senior Schools. This hourlong Concert will include solo performances as well as pieces presented by some of our chamber ensembles.

Year 3/4 Lunchtime Recital

9 May, 12pm, Berrick Foyer

The Lunchtime recitals provide children with performance opportunities to share talent on their instruments with friends.

Senior Ensembles Concert

3 June, 6pm, Sixth Form Concourse

This exciting concert will feature a number of our Senior ensemble performing a broad range of musical genres in a prestigious professional concert hall. This will undoubtedly be one of the musical highlights of the term.

ART & DESIGN

Falmouth University Residency

10-16 January

We are privileged to have a week-long residency with Ella Emmanuel, Head of the BA Drawing course at Falmouth Art University. Ella will work with students from across the school on exciting drawing projects.

Year 12

Bali Residential

18-21 January

Year 12 IB and A-level students will spend four days in Ubud, Bali absorbing the culture and developing their art skills.

Year 12 - Chen Shitong

Collagraphy Workshops

26 January/1 February/10 February

Trained in Lithography from Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico, US, Chen Shitong will conduct collagraphy workshops for our Year 12 IB and A-level Art students who will explore the technique, develop their skills, and interact with a true specialist in the artist community.

ART & DESIGN

Year 10 and 12 art student visit to ART SG

19 January

Year 12 and 10 Art students will visit ART SG. This exhibition is South East Asis’s largest and most global Art fair. We expect a stellar line-up of international and regional galleries alongside a cutting edge program of installations, experimental film and moving image, together with thought- provoking panel discussions, and performances.

Year 8 - Interpretations

Year 10 & 12 - Ian Murphy Drawing Workshops

25/26/27 January

UK-based artist Ian Murphy - a contemporary British Fine Artist who gained initial success with selection to the British Young Contemporary Artists in 1985 and is best known for his powerful, tonal drawings and atmospheric, mixed-media oil paintings of architectural places - will work with our Art and Graphics students in Years 10 and 12 as they learn how to produce tremendous large-scale tonal drawings with graphite powder.

11 May, National Gallery of Singapore

Having analysed five very different pieces of art using ‘See, Think, Wonder’ routines to make their thinking visible within research booklets for their annual Interpretations painting project, Year 8 students have created their interpretations of the artworks by Southeast Asian artists. A final selection of their paintings will be showcased at the National Gallery of Singapore.

Ian Pike Workshop

Year 10: 22 February

Year 7 - Bright Hill Temple Trip

5-6 February

Students will go on an exciting art-based investigation to creatively kick off our painting project. Our young artists will work directly in their sketchbooks recording from life the rich and vibrant cultural aspects surrounding them. This fabulous location is simply brimming with colour, shape, and pattern which will directly help inspire their future artistic and musical creations back within the classroom. The challenge will be to record through a range of different media including photography, drawing, painting, and written notes.

Year 12: 23 February

Famed screenwriter and actor Ian Pike will lead workshops with Year 10 and Year 12 Film students to help develop script writing and storytelling skills. Ian will focus on the essentials of character development, the writing of realistic dialogue and structuring of short-film narrative. Through both theoretical and hands-on activities, he will lead students through the process of script development from inception to fruition.

EVENT OF THE YEAR

Tanglin Summer Festival 2024

8 June

After a successful run last year, the Tanglin Summer Festival 2024 is back with a bang! This time, it will combine the best of our dance, drama, and musical talents within the Tanglin community and showcase them all on a spectacular outdoor stage in the heart of the school.
