Newsletter March/April 2024

National Nurses Week is celebrated every year from May 6th to 12th, nurses are recognized for their service and dedication to caring for others and improving the health of patients nationwide through National Nurses Week.

For 2024, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has selected the theme "Nurses Make the Difference" to honor the varying roles of nurses and their positive impact on our lives. Nurses make a difference as trusted advocates who ensure individuals, families, and communities receive quality patient care and services.

UMass Chan Medical School celebrates the learners, faculty and alumni of the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing who are keeping our community healthy and create health policy change through research.

Appreciative Reflection Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.

Faculty Spotlight Mary Lou Siefert DNSc, MBA, RN, AOCN, Associate Professor had an abstract accepted with her DFCI Colleagues as a poster presentation at the annual Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Congress in Washington DC this year.

Besides the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing being wellrepresented, former Dean Dr. Doreen Harper was there as a former NONPF president. A highlight of the opening plenary was the creator and founder of Nurse Practitioners Dr. Loretta Ford. At age 103, she recorded a video welcoming all to the conference and applauding past and future work. She continues to be an inspiration.

Dr. Johnny Isenberger, Dr. Alex Menard and Dr. Dawn Carpenter are interested in the care of the ICU survivor in the post ICU period. Johnny’s DNP project, for which Dr. Menard and Dr. Carpenter were faculty mentors, focused on a communication intervention to improve the screening and management of the ICU survivor by their primary care provider.

Dr. Dani Hebert presented at the annual NONPF conference. Her presentation with Dr. Shari Harding is entitled “From Clinician to Academic Scholar: The Nuts and Bolts of a Plan to Ease the Transition”.

Dr. Chrystina Soloperto was elected to the ENRS Board of Directors as Communications Member at large.

Dr. Dawn Carpenter was just elected to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Board of Directors effective start date is July 1 for 3 years.

Faculty Spotlight Cont.

Faculty and students attended various workshops and presented their posters at the 2024 Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners (MCNP) Conference at the Boston Marriott in Newton MA this week. They learned a wide range of relevant topics featuring expert nurse practitioner and physician speakers.

Dr. Shari Harding received the “Distinguished NP” award at the MCNP conference.

Congratulation Dr. Mechelle Plasse, assistant professor of nursing and director of mental health nursing programs and team on receiving an $11.6 million grant to implement a new statewide fellowship program to expand the pipeline of psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners entering the community health center workforce. Dr. Mary Antonelli, Ricardo Poza, Dr. Rachel Richards and Dean Joan Vitello published article titled “Development of a Master of Science, Nursing and Interprofessional Leadership Program: AACN Essentials in Action.” The article explores the development of a new master’s program focused on leadership acumen, interprofessional relationships, and knowledge of healthcare operations. Dr. Amanda Cornine, assistant professor in the GEP program presented her poster entitled “Outcomes of Post-Exam Reviews in Nursing and Health Sciences Students: An Integrative Review” at the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS) 36th Annual Scientific Sessions in Boston MA.

Student Spotlight We are thrilled to announce UMass Chan students have elected Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing student Elizabeth Osa-Agbontaen as the next Student Trustee for the 2024-2025 Academic Year!

Elizabeth is a current DNP1-FNP student and received her bachelor’s degree from UMass-Amherst. She has been actively involved at UMass Chan as a participant in UMass Light-SMP and the Student Government Association, served as co-president of GSNO, and collaborated with DIO on advocacy efforts. As Student Trustee, she will strive to create opportunities for student engagement and involvement to help shape the direction of our institution, empowering students to contribute to positive change. She also is committed to effectively representing the UMass Chan student body and ensuring their interests and concerns are at the forefront of her work.

On Saturday April 27, 13 students from Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nurses were inducted into the Iota Phi at-Large Chapter of the Sigma International Honor Society. Two DNP students were in attendance to celebrate this accomplishment.

The GEP students participated in Multi-patient simulation on 4/25/24. They had the opportunity to care for multiple patients in the lab as they worked in teams.

Geriatric Interprofessional Immersion Training (GIIT) weekend at the Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster , MA was held for it’s 13th year. An interprofessional teaching weekend included DNP students Patricia Quill, Marisa DaSilva, and Grace Milone. Pharmacy Students also attended from MCPHS and rising MD Chief residents from numerous specialties. An interactive case involving a hospitalized older adult is woven throughout the weekend with small group work and mini-lectures from Interprofessional Faculty illuminating the unique care needs of older adults as they transition from hospital to home. Faculty included Jill Terrien from GSN, Geriatricians Sarah McGee , Jerry Gurwitz, Gerry Gleich, Erika Zimmons, Randall Morse David Dosa and Abir Kanaan from pharmacy. The goal is for attendees to continue educating those they work with to share the learning and improve outcomes in older adult patients. It is a fantastic experience!

DNP year 1 students Mariela Sandalis, Katie Reed Wolferseder and Victoria Belanger hosted and ran a lunchtime session April 1, 2024 on Drowsy Driving. This program was done with the Injury Prevention Program at UMass Memorial Healthcare and was part of their community service learning practicum for course N603B. Besides drowsy driving, the effects of Brain Injury were discussed with hands on stations provided.

In the SIM lab Dr. Amanda Cornine, Assistant Professor helped the Graduate Entry Pathway students learn about cardiac rhythm strip interpretation through "Cardiac Calisthenics" where they used their bodies to represent the chambers of the heart in various cardiac rhythms.

46 DNP, 9 Post Masters DNP and 5 Master of Science learners presented their scholarly projects Tuesday April 24 and Saturday April 27. Learners have been formulizing and finalizing their projects since they entered their programs. Presenting their final project and handing in their final written paper is the last step before graduation.

Dr. Katie Boston-Leary met with our PhD students morning, discussing the future of nursing. Dr. BostonLeary was the keynote speaker at the annual Lillian R. Goodman Lecture in April, she is presenting on a Healthy Work Environment.

Dr. Katie Boston-Leary is the Director of Nursing Programs at the American Nurses Association overseeing the Nursing Practice and Work Environment Division and Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation. She is a well-known speaker nationally and internationally with many publications and podcast guest invitations.

During Spring break DNP students and faculty were in the Dominican Republic. Pictured they were on their way to Buen Samaritano Hospital for conference with promotoras and local MDs. Doctor of Nursing Practice students got a chance to hone their problem solving and decision making skills successfully solving puzzles in an escape room designed to represent a room in a patient‘s apartment.

They celebrated their time learning regression modeling and survival analysis and all sorts of useful statistical procedures for nurse scientists. Som is a business PhD student at UMass Lowell and she was a fantastic addition to our cohort this semester. They will continue to haunt Dr. Crawford, but she will let them as long as data is involved.

Johnny Isenberger Post MS DNP presented at Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS) 36th Annual Scientific Sessions in Boston MA, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) 50th Annual Conference in Baltimore MD, and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Horizons Conference in Portland ME.

Paula Walsh Post MS DNP is presenting at the Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners (MCNP) 2024 New England Regional Nurse Practitioner Conference in Newton MA. Kate Small Post MS DNP student is presenting at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Horizons Conference in Portland ME. Ian Lane, PhD student and Predoctoral Diversity Fellow has been selected by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) to present a poster presentation at the World Congress on Pain conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands, this August. This poster is about a systematic mixed studies review he led and completed with nurse scientists from University of Florida, to guide his dissertation work, which focuses on chronic pain disparities in sexual and gender minorities.

Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing DNP students volunteered at the UMass Chan Wellness Fair April 11. They did Biometric screenings including blood pressure, oxygen levels, temperature and ear checks. They also gave out information on how to follow up with your PCP, dermatology skin checks and understanding tick bites & Lyme disease.

Sierra from the Admissions Department manned the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing table, handing out information about our various programs.

Monica Wiant (DNP student), Dr. Rita Amoah and LaDanielle McNeil (GEP student) volunteered at the Multicultural Women's Health Summit held April 13.

Sarah Romain, PhD student and Lulu Alvarez, DNP student joined Dean Joan Vitello at the 2024 AACN Student Policy Summit Conference in Washington, DC. Students who attend the Summit are immersed in didactic program sessions focused on the federal policy process and nursing’s role in professional advocacy.

Alumni Spotlight

On April 22, 2024, the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing hosted more than 100 high school students and their families for the NursingExpo. More then a dozen nursing schools participated, providing infomation about various types of nursing careers and educational programs. Dr. Rose KronziahSeme and Dr. Amanda Cornine gave a presentation about the different paths to becoming a nurse.

Aiden came to visit us during his school vacation. He was our youngest coworker for the day receiving a badge to make it official. It was his birthday, he received lots of goodies from his friends in the office.

Aiden is the son of Shya Monahan, Administrative Assistant and front desk face of the Tan Chingfen visits the GSN.
