Dearest Geographers,

particular will take part in:

GIS Day at TAMU this year Nov 17-19 is shaping up to be the best ever. We have 3 full days of hands-on short courses on various GIS topics ranging from intro to GIS to advanced GIS processing with R and ArcServer. A career fair, a keynote by Clint Brown '78 Director of Product Engineering at Esri, panels by alumni & and the Oil & Gas Industry, and many other activities round out what is the most extensive and exciting GIS Day series of events anywhere on the planet. There are still two open calls for participation that we hope Geography students in

1) GIS Paper competition - Requires submission of abstract (only!) and a presentation on Tues Nov 18th if selected as a finalist; and 2) GIS Poster Competition - Requires the submission of an abstract and the preparation of a poster to be displayed on GIS day Weds, Nov 19. Both competitions have prizes including a $100 gift card for the best paper presentation and GPS devices for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in the poster competition (valued at ~$800 for the best one).

Many of the events which require RSVP's (mostly the training courses) are starting to fill up, so if you are interested, sign up on the GIS Day website (http://gisday.tamu.edu) and reserve spots for the events you want to attend now!

Attached are the calls for paper and poster student competitions. See http:// gisday.tamu.edu for complete details of all events and competitions. -Dr. Daniel Goldberg

Student Counseling Helpline With the semester in full swing, life can get very hectic. There are bills to pay, classes to attend, and exams to study for, all while making time to hang out with friends. Juggling school, work, and social lives can be tough by itself; throw in roommates, family, and significant others, and you’ve got an overflowing plate. This is where the Student Counseling HelpLine comes in. Staffed by your fellow Aggies, the HelpLine is available for any current students (or those concerned about a student) to call from 4pm8am weekdays and 24 hours a day on weekends. Volunteers are trained and supervised by the

Student Counseling Service. Our number is 979-8452700, but don’t worry about forgetting it – just look on the back of your student ID! If you need someone to listen when the HelpLine isn’t operating, you can go online at scs.tamu.edu to make an appointment with one of our counseling staff, or, for immediate help, stop by the Student Counseling Service in Cain Hall from 10am-4pm for crisis counseling. Think you might like being a HelpLine volunteer? Go to scs.tamu.edu and read what current and former HelpLiners have to say about their experi-

ence. If being a member of the HelpLine is something you would like to commit to, email Susan Vavra at susan@scs.tamu.edu for an application. The HelpLine welcomes, appreciates, and respects everyone. Call us after class, in the middle of the night, or on the way home from work. Call us when you’re feeling depressed, frustrated with a roommate, or going through a breakup. Call us if you’re worried about a test or have no clue what you’ll do after you graduate. No matter what the time, what the issue, or who you are, the HelpLine is here for you. Call. Talk. We’re here.

Office of Sustainability Geographers! The Office of Sustainability is searching for Spring 2015 interns to help increase awareness and education about the growing field of sustainability and every day sustainable practices. Sustainability encompasses environmental, economic, and social aspects, and encourages the use of critical thinking skills to come up with long term solutions to societies biggest problems. Sustainabil-

ity’s interdisciplinary approach to problem solving makes it perfect for students in any undergraduate major on campus. The position description and internship application can be found in the following link: http:// sustainability.tamu.edu/ Employment.aspx. Application materials (Internship Application, Resume, Cover Letter) are due by noon on Friday, November 14th,

2014 and should be sent to sustainability@tamu.edu or dropped off at the General Services Complex, Suite 1801. The Department of Geography has had two students participate recently in this internship program so if interested, check it out! Kelly Wellman, TAMU’s Sustainability Officer, is a 1995 graduate from the Department of Geography
