Clearwater Marine Aquarium announces a multi-year expansion

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is about to undergo a huge expansion. The Manatee Rehabilitation Center is scheduled to open this spring, followed by groundbreaking this summer on a Belize Marine Rescue and Educational Center as part of the CMA Research Institute. The facility will also welcome many new marine ambassadors, including manatees, sea lions, sharks, penguins and more, along with exciting new attractions for guests of all ages. Academy at the Lakes is getting a massive expansion Exciting news from Pasco County: On Jan.19, Academy at the Lakes, a private school serving students grades Pre-K3 through 12, broke ground on an 18,000-squarefoot expansion. This project is part of their brand new “FORWARD!” initiative, aimed at facilitating dynamic and interactive learning experiences, nurturing creativity and critical thinking, and promoting a sense of community among students, faculty and staff. The development includes four spacious classrooms equipped with the latest technology, innovation hubs that provide dedicated spaces for STEAM learning and exploration, and community collaboration spaces, including a black box theatre for enhanced performances.

Race into LEGOLAND for the new LEGO Ferrari Build & Race On March 8, head to LEGOLAND Florida Resort to see a life-sized Ferrari 296 GTS Hybrid race car made entirely of LEGO bricks—and even sit in the driver’s seat! Create your own Ferrari race car in interactive play zones before test-driving it through three extreme test tracks and then racing it on a virtual track to the finish line. World’s Largest Triceratops at Glazer Children’s Museum

NEW Family-Friendly Ride at Busch Gardens: Phoenix Rising Phoenix Rising, an ALL-NEW familyfriendly roller coaster, will be the park’s 10th coaster when it opens this spring. It’s going up in the Pantopia region and will be a suspended roller coaster, traveling at speeds up to 44 miles per hour throughout the 1,831-feet journey over the Serengeti Plain. We love that the minimum height requirement is only 42 inches, which means most families will be able to ride together. Other cool features include on-board audio with a one-of-a-kind soundtrack.

NEW at Adventure Island: Castaway Falls Just in time for spring break, Adventure Island will unveil an all-new, multi-level water play attraction, Castaway Falls! It’s part of the water park’s biggest expansion in its 40-plus-year history. This family-friendly attraction will have more than 100 play elements, four water slides, and three giant tipping buckets. It sounds like a perfect way to cool off on a hot Tampa Bay day.

When it comes to old Florida attractions, one of our favorites is Weeki Wachee Springs State Park to the north because they have ‘real’ mermaids and a super cool natural springs water park called Buccaneer Bay with water slides and tubing (Buccaneer Bay opens March 23). Don’t miss the famous mermaids in the underwater theater! If you want to explore the area a bit more, consider booking a kayak ahead of time.

If you’re looking for more beach and less touristy stuff, Fort De Soto’s North Beach is your best bet. We also love walking the Fort before heading to the beach area of the state park, and we like that you can easily find plenty of parking and bathroom facilities as well. You can also access Egmont Key via ferry ride for a fee from the Fishing Pier at Fort De Soto Park and enjoy walking or biking along the seven miles of paved trails there.

For skiing in Utah, Floridians may think big name resorts like Park City and Deer Valley, but you can save money by targeting a lesser-known mountain town like Ogden instead. It's close to major ski areas like Snow Basin and Powder Mountain for skiing and a short drive from the Great Salt Lake when you want a change of scenery and a day off from skiing. It's only 45 minutes from the airport in Salt Lake City too and has affordable chain hotel options (like Hilton and Marriott) where you can stay on points if you have them.

SEBRING, FLORIDA

Think beyond the beach in Florida. We recently discovered this lake-filled area less than two hours from Tampa where you can stay in vacation rentals or the pretty Inn on the Lakes. Go out on airboat rides on Lake Istokpoga (the most thrilling air boat ride I’ve done anywhere in Florida!), hike the trails or go camping within Highlands Hammock State Park. Explore cute towns like Lake Placid, home to beautiful murals, cute cafes and a weekend market. You can even take Amtrak here from Tampa! Such a Florida gem.

WEST VIRGINIA

Floridians focus on North Carolina when it comes to getting away to the mountains on the east coast. But you can fly into Washington D.C., rent a car, drive two hours east and be in the gorgeous little mountain towns of Davis and Thomas in the Canaan Valley. Hit Blackwater Falls State Park and the Dolly Sods Wilderness for spring hiking and to chase waterfalls along the West Virginia Waterfall Trail in April and May (early March, there might still be spring skiing in these parts). You can also make this a city and nature trip: Spend a few days in D.C. with the kids visiting museums in the nation's capital and then drive west for outdoor adventures.

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

The Swiss city of Zurich is one of the easiest places in Europe to get to from Tampa thanks to an overnight nonstop flight on Edelweiss. This route is mostly full of Europeans coming to Tampa for sun and beach, but there are many reasons for us to go the other direction, too. You could go here for a simple city escape in one of Europe's prettiest lakefront cities or take the train from the city into the mountains, visiting ski towns like Andermatt, Zermatt and Davos to go skiing. The season goes into April and even later in some parts, where skiing takes place atop glaciers.

PAPER BAG SHAMROCK CRAFT

EASTER EGG SUNCATCHER SUPPLIES

• Colorful tissue paper • Scissors

SUPPLIES

• Paint (different shades of green) • Recycled brown shopping bag • Fiber fill or shredded paper • Scissors • Shamrock template • Foam brush • Stapler • Glitter (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Download, print and cut the shamrock template. You can also draw your own shamrock if you prefer. 2. Trace two copies of the shamrock on the brown paper bag. 3. Cut out your paper bag shamrocks. If you have small children, make sure they are using safety scissors. 4. Paint one of the paper bag shamrocks. This will be the front side of your craft. Adding glitter is optional. 5. Staple the sides of the paper bag shamrocks. Work your way around the edge, stapling a half inch apart. Leave some space at the top and possibly the sides. 6. Finally, stuff your paper shamrock with fiber fill, then staple it until it’s completely sealed. If you are not a fan of using a stapler for this project, use a hole punch and yarn instead. You could also use double-sided tape.

• Recycled cardboard • Orange yarn • Tape • Green foil cardstock • Scissors • Clear tacky glue (optional) • Carrot template

DIRECTIONS 1. Download, print and cut out the FREE carrot template. If you have a cutting machine like a Cricut, search for a carrot image to cut. 2. Next, trace the root of the carrot on recycled cardboard and cut it out. 3. Tape the beginning of your orange yarn to the back of your carrot. Now, wrap the carrot with the orange yarn until it’s completely covered. 4. Finally, trace the carrot leaf on the green foil cardstock. Cut it out. Tape or glue it to the back of the carrot.

DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE DIRECTIONS: 1. Download and print the FREE Easter egg template. 2. Cut the tissue paper into small pieces. If you’re not comfortable with your child using scissors, let them tear the tissue paper by hand. 3. Cut a piece of contact paper that is larger than the Easter egg, then peel off the backing. Carefully place your egg outline on top of the contact paper. 4. Cover the inside of the Easter egg with the tissue paper pieces. Once finished, your child has the option to add chunky glitter. 5. Carefully peel off the back of another contact paper and place it on top of the egg, sticky side down. Smooth it out to get rid of any creases or bubbles. 6. Finally, cut out the Easter egg suncatcher. Use double-sided tape to stick to a window or sliding glass door.

Get ready for an action-packed weekend when Tampa Bay AirFest lands in town. AirFest returns on Friday, March 29 through Saturday, March 30 at MacDill Air Force Base. For the first time, AirFest will take place on a Friday and Saturday (Sunday, March 31 is Easter Sunday). And with Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties having no school on Friday, it’s the perfect way to spend a long weekend!

From thrilling aerial performances to family-friendly activities and military aircraft displays, this is one event you won’t want to miss! Here’s what you can expect at this awesome two-day event that lets you get up close and personal with military and civilian aircraft and pilots.

Typically, the end of March produces picture-perfect sunny weather here in Tampa. While it won’t be scorching hot like our summer months, you’ll still want to pack plenty of shade and be prepared to feel a little extra heat while walking around on the asphalt and near the planes.

This free family-friendly event is put on by the men and women of MacDill Air Force Base as their way to say “thank you” to the community for their outstanding support. This year’s event will feature a variety of military and civilian flight performances featuring the United States Air Force Thunderbirds.

ZooTampa’s Manatee Hat Trick:

RESCUE, REHAB, RELEASE by Tara Payor, Ph.D.

Manatees are among Tampa Bay’s natural gifts. Aquatic mammals and herbivores, manatees spend spring days swaying through our area’s warming waters. Endangered species, manatees don’t thrive in water colder than 68 degrees. Because they have no natural predators, manatees' greatest threats are cold temperatures and boat propellers. Through more than 20 years of lifesaving work, ZooTampa’s worldrenowned Manatee Critical Care Center—a non-profit, acute care facility—has treated over 400 manatees. Manatee rescue, rehabilitation and release drive the Center’s work. Jamie Vaccaro, ZooTampa’s Associate Curator of Florida and Manatee, invited me into the Manatee Critical Care Center and spoke with me about our waters’ delicate giants. Cold stress, Jamie explained, was the cause for the zoo’s most recent manatee arrivals. Resembling human frost bite, cold stress can cause white lesions on manatee’s bodies. Mainly muscular and blubber free, manatees are intolerant of cold—hence migrations toward the bay area’s natural springs, which maintain year-round temperatures of 72 degrees. Unable to compensate for heat loss, manatees decrease activity to preserve energy. Resulting lethargy and secondary infections, like pneumonia and hyperthermia, set in. On Jan. 25, 2024, a trio of manatees, deemed the Hat Trick, was rescued. “We like naming our rescues after either the cause or location of rescue,” Vaccaro explains. “Given their cold stress, we named them Zamboni, Puck and Icing.” Zamboni and Puck, about a year old, were rescued from St. Pete’s Placido Bayou where they were stranded in a ditch. Icing, an estimated 2-year-old with an intake weight of 550 pounds, was rescued from Bradenton’s Ware Creek. Manatees’ ages are approximated based on their length. “When rescues arrive with cold stress, we get them into warm water as soon as possible so that we can raise their internal body temperature,” Vaccaro says. Manatees undergo diagnostic labs and bloodwork, enabling the critical care center team to provide each patient with individualized fluid therapy. Medical pool floors rise from the water—limiting manatees’ motion during events like tube feeding. Once hand feeding is unnecessary, manatee

care is as hands-off as possible so that manatees learn life skills needed after release. “Two years is typically the longest stay for orphaned manatee calves, and they learn more manatee behaviors from manatee groups found at release sites,” Vaccaro says. Releases are well-orchestrated undertakings, entailing the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and Manatee Rehabilitation Partnership. “Through our partnership with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, manatees are tagged, similar to household pets’ microchips, and tags both gather and share data detailing individual manatee’s progress.” Vaccaro says she feels privileged for her daily part in changing animals’ lives. Summer 2024 brings expansion to the Manatee Critical Care Center with the addition of acute care and nursery pools to serve dire cases. Projected to open in January 2026, ZooTampa’s new Manatee Rescue promises to bring guests as close as possible to manatees’ lives while promoting education through transparency. Guests’ proximity to manatees and the critical care team will allow them to see, in real time, the Center’s lifesaving efforts. “Manatees are in our backyards, and I want to harness the power of educational conversations with ZooTampa guests about the why and how of what we do,” Vaccaro says. She and her teammates are intent on teaching humans positive behaviors for coexisting with manatees.

TBPM: Tell us about the journey that led you to this special way to offer your well-researched expertise and innate skill set. DBJ: I began as a high school teacher and eventually worked my way up to being an academic chair. The teachers in my department found that the number one issue students were facing was interpersonal matters. We had a front-row seat to the ways that friendship impacted everything else, including their attendance, mood and performance. When I left the classroom and got into the public relations industry, I found that my charismatic, high-achieving women clients were dealing with the same friendship issues that my teens were facing—it just looked a little bit different. That’s when I became curious about the ways in which our social network impacts our health and happiness. So for the past six years, I’ve dedicated my career to studying what the research has to say about women’s conflict and connection. TBPM: Why do adult women struggle with friendship, and how can a friendship coach help? DBJ: The research suggests that women have higher expectations of their close relationships than men do; this includes both romantic and platonic relationships. We give a lot to our friendships, but yes, we also expect a lot more. So I believe that women sometimes struggle with meeting their friends’ needs and knowing how to get their needs met. Communicating through those issues can be tricky, though, because we are also trying to manage our reputation and not wanting to come across as being difficult (a societal pressure that women often face more than men). At the heart of it, we want women we can love and be loved by, but there are a lot of personal and cultural things that often get in the way of us being more satisfied in these kinds of relationships. A friendship coach can help you figure out a friend-related goal and figure out tangible steps to do something about it. Most of my clients are high-achieving women who are privately unsatisfied with their female friendships. I’m not too often dealing with those who are “socially awkward.” It’s the extroverted networkers who often feel the most alone and misunderstood. They find it helpful to have someone who can equip them with research and strategies to experience more platonic intimacy in their friendships. TBPM: Through motherhood, women share so many relatable experiences that should bring communities of moms closer together. However, this isn't the case. What happens among mothers that makes it challenging to find their ideal mom group or that one ride-or-die mom friend? DBJ: Connecting with like-minded people can be challenging in any context, but it can be especially difficult in motherhood. Moms need a lot of

This is why we inherently crave and pursue authentic platonic connections as adults, and observe in wonder (and sometimes horror) as our children do the same. With schedules that are packed with playdates, sports, school and the many other ways we socialize our kids, what, then, is left for us parents who also dream of a Monica to our Rachel? This is where a Friendship Coach comes in.

support, and it can be hard to find another mom who shares your values, can offer support and has the capacity to engage the way you desire. But it’s possible. I recommend three things: try not to dismiss women as friends because they parent differently; be careful of getting caught up in cliques; and remember that you don’t have to get all of your social needs met by one person. It’s healthy to have a diverse portfolio of relationships. I would also encourage moms to ask for the help they need. We so often feel bereft in our friendships because we don’t get the support we’re looking for, but we’re also afraid to ask for fear that we’ll look like a mom who doesn’t have it all together. But the truth is that none of us do, and you can’t get your needs met if you won’t make your needs known. TBPM: As parents navigate the friendships of their kids and stumble through the difficulties of “mean girls,” “achievement disparities,” and so much more, what resources or strategies do you recommend for mom and dads to best support their child? DBJ: As a former teacher, I can’t stress the importance of being in community with your kids’ teachers. They have a unique vantage point and intimately observe your child’s social dynamic in ways you don’t get to see. Let them know you want to work with them to understand your child’s behavior and their insights as a key stakeholder in that child’s life. For parents with daughters, I also recommend the book “Untangled” by Lisa Damour, Ph. D. and “Set Boundaries Find Peace” by Nedra Glover Tawwab. These books will equip you with tangible ways to support kids who are struggling to connect with others or speak up for themselves. Also, speak up to people you trust about your issues, because they can share intel about resources that can be helpful. You will never benefit from keeping your kids’ friendship issues private out of shame or because you want to look like the perfect family. TBPM: We are so excited to share that your book (published by Hachette) is available now for pre-order! What can you tell us about this project? DBJ: I’m so thrilled to get “Fighting for our Friendships: The Science and Art of Conflict and Connection in Women’s Relationships” in people’s hands. This book is meant to help people understand the mechanics of women’s friendships. What brings us together? What tears us apart? I share research to help us understand the bigger picture, because having healthy conflict in friendship is inevitable, but if you don’t know how to manage it, you’ll find yourself friendless or in low-quality relationships.

Kids to Know: Emaline Khavin by Julie Tingley, founder of @weemacree

Meet Emaline, my friend who attended the Wee Macree Giveback Spectacular last fall. As she learned about different local youth populations in need and participated in activities to serve on the spot, she felt like something was missing. At 5 years old, with a heart bigger than her whole self, she looked lovingly at her doll and shared with her mother that she wanted to do something for babies. From her mom, Charis Khavin: “As World Kindness Day, Giveback Tuesday and Thanksgiving approached, Emaline and I were really focusing our community studies on understanding charity and the importance of helping others. Once Emaline sparked a conversation about helping babies, I reminded her of Baby Cycle. As a member of GFWC Junior Women's Club of Saint Petersburg, we had volunteered with Baby Cycle in the past, and I was already familiar with their mission and the fact they were one of the only diaper banks in our area. Emaline decided to start collecting diapers by making a wish list at Target, and I shared it on social media. In just three weeks, with many trips to pick up donations and shop with raised funds, Emaline delivered over 85 boxes of diapers and more than 120 packs of wipes to Baby Cycle. Thank you so much for sharing her accomplishment with others in hopes they too will be inspired to help the community in whatever little way they can, even if they have to give up their garage to the overabundance of diapers collected.”

TBPM: Giving back and doing good in the community is something you’ve done every month with your mom for some time. Why do you think it’s important to do good in the community?

TBPM: What are some things you have learned about people through giving back?

TBPM: If you could do something new and work to become really good at it, what would it be?

EC: That people can be really kind sometimes.

EC: Dance.

EC: Because you can help people by giving them things like food, clothes and homes.

TBPM: How do you show kindness and friendliness every day?

TBPM: Tell us about your partnership with Baby Cycle. How did that idea come up, and what did you do?

EC: By helping people and being nice and being kind with a smile.

EC: We went to a giveback event on a Sunday and there were no organizations for babies, and I love babies and think babies are cuddly and cute—so I wanted to help babies. So I delivered diapers and wipes to Baby Cycle. TBPM: How did it make you feel to personally collect and deliver so many boxes of diapers and wipes, knowing you were helping babies and their families? EC: Really really good because I was helping Baby Cycle; really good because I was helping babies.

TBPM: Tell us about your family. What do you love to do most with your mom and dad? EC: I live with my mom, dad and my cat. Right now my Aunt Kendall is here from Texas. I love to stay in hotels. TBPM: You share a lot of really great experiences with your mom during the day as you homeschool and attend local activities. Of these things, what is something you love to do the most?

TBPM: What would you say to a kid just like you who wants to help other people and do good in their community? EC: Just do it. TBPM: Do you have advice for other kids who will see your story? EC: Do really good in the community. TBPM: As a kid growing up in Tampa Bay, what is your favorite thing about where you live? EC: Baseball and hockey games.

Play is one of the best ways for children to learn language and literacy skills. Play activities help children put thoughts into words and talk about what they are doing. Children develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally and gain confidence during play. Utilize our selection of games, puzzles and toys to help develop fine and gross motor skills and encourage creativity, concentration and cooperation.

Half-Day Camps Combine for Full-Day Fun by Courtney Cairns Pastor

If you’re ready to make summer camp selections, here are some combinations to consider as you mix and match.

New/Old:

Your kids want summer camps where they can battle robots, decorate cupcakes, design video games and play with American Girl dolls and Legos. Your goals for them are academic practice, exercise, time away from screens and maybe an opportunity to try a new activity. Can one summer camp accomplish all that before school is back in session? A program that offers half-day camps could be the solution.

Families can mix and match different morning and afternoon camps to design a full day that fits their needs. Parents have the convenience of one drop-off and pickup at the same camp, while kids enjoy two distinct programs in one day. A child who wants to play basketball can do that in the morning at the same time as a sibling who hopes to learn hip hop, for example, and their parents can schedule both of them for art in the afternoon. Each weekly session at Corbett Prep’s CAMP IDS features dozens of arts, STEM, sports and recreational camps for elementary and middle school students. Full-day camps are also available for field trips or programs that require more time, but the majority of the camps are half days to allow for the greatest flexibility.

You can ensure your gamer gets a break from computer screens when you merge Minecraft, App Design or VR with camps featuring outdoor games, handson crafts or yoga. And while academic camps on phonics, writing, reading and math do include fun, engaging activities, your camper might appreciate pairing one of those camps with something less structured such as fishing, board games, slip-and-slide kickball and gaga ball.

When it comes to choosing summer camp sessions for your kids, more options make the process easier. Summer camp is about making memories and friends as students recharge from a busy school year, and half-day camps double the amount of fun in store for them.

At least partly responsible for the flurry of planning and scheduling is a very genuine concern about maintaining our children’s academic progress. We have known for decades that children lose a considerable amount (some sources say up to 30%) of their academic gains during the summer months. Take a breath, because there is a very simple prescription to keep young minds active and growing while school is out: Make them think. It turns out that it is remarkably simple to get children to think. They do it quite naturally from their toddler years; remember the endless repetition of “why?” The trick with older children is to engage their curiosity, and then they can’t help but wonder, experiment, read and discuss.

1 GO TO THE LIBRARY. Encourage your child to read each day during the summer, just as they do during the school year. Remind them of their strategies for finding “just right books,” but also give them the freedom to read the topics that interest them.

2 GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY SOMETHING NEW. Sign them up for knitting camp or robotics club. Encourage them to take a risk. Trying out and practicing a new skill encourages a growth mindset, especially in older children who tend to be perfectionists.

4 3 BUILD SOMETHING TOGETHER (OR TAKE SOMETHING APART). Instead of taking the recycling out to the curb, lay out some basic art supplies and challenge your children to build a robot with the cast-off cardboard and plastic. Dig through your garage for that old desktop computer or radio, hand your child a screwdriver and challenge her to take it apart. Marvel at the fact that you’re raising an engineer and you didn’t even know it.

PLAY MATH GAMES. Ask your child to teach you some of the math games he enjoyed playing during the school year. There are also plenty of fun games you can play using just a deck of cards, and lots of online resources from PBS and other organizations. If you have several hours to kill, dust off Monopoly Junior and let out your inner real estate mogul.

GET COOKING. Pull out the measuring spoons and cups and practice fractions while you whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies. You can challenge older children to plan the menu for a week, shop for the ingredients and work with you in the kitchen to prep and cook. You get a break, and they get a real-life learning experience. Everybody wins. Bon appetit!

Lab Coats & Moon Soil – This is Hillsborough County Public Schools! by Laura Cross

Students walked one by one across the stage as a white lab coat was placed over their shoulders. Proud parents packed the audience, their iPhones capturing every moment of the ceremony. This is not a medical school graduation. Not yet, anyway. This is Dunbar Elementary Magnet’s White Coat Ceremony! “Dunbar is a medical magnet school, one of only five in the state and the only elementary medical magnet in Hillsborough County,” says Cynthia Crim, principal of Dunbar. “Each of our kids are exposed to medical curriculum starting in kindergarten and leading up into fifth grade.” Four years ago, Dunbar partnered with The Brain Expansion Scholastic Training organization or BEST. BEST comes into the school to teach students lessons about the human body and the medical field. They also encourage students to continue taking classes on the medical path and to consider a future in the medical field. Near the mid-point of the year, fifth graders have earned their own white lab coat and stethoscope. “We try to make this a really monumental experience for our kids and our families,” said Principal Crim. “We have so many parents that work in the medical field themselves and it just makes today really special and solidifies that our kids can do anything!” Fifth grade student Liliana Johnson loved her time at Dunbar and learning all about the human body. “I want to save lives because some people have cancer and I want to learn how to help them and make them feel like they’re not alone,” she says. The White Coat Ceremony makes her feel very accomplished. “This experience, it’s going to be a memory that I won’t forget!”

While Dunbar Elementary Magnet is creating future doctors, Stewart Middle Magnet is shaping future scientists! Stewart Middle Magnet has been proudly selected by NASA as one of only 10 schools to participate in the Plant the Moon Challenge. When astronauts landed on the moon in 1972, they collected moon dirt. That moon dirt has been recreated and given to several Florida schools for experimentation. Students at Stewart will be planting lettuce, spinach, green beans, radishes and other vegetables in the moon soil to see how they grow. “Here at Stewart Middle Magnet, we are a NASA Explorer School and a STEM school. So, this is a wonderful opportunity to actually do it, and see what can be grown,” explains Julian Rivera, a science teacher at Stewart. Over the next few months, students will observe and record their findings and at the end of the school year, they’ll submit their findings to NASA. “The students are very excited to contribute to space science,” Rivera says. “And, in the future, when we grow plants on the moon, they’ll know they had a hand in that!”

As the temperatures get warmer, the pool is once again becoming a welcome destination. At the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, we have plenty of swim programs for everyone in the family to have fun and learn to stay safe in the water. We offer swim lessons for children starting at 6 months old to teens, adults and seniors to assist them with building foundational skills. We help students achieve curriculum benchmarks and encourage their improvement as they progress through the YMCA swim lesson programs. Our goal is to help everyone to be confident around the water. Swim lessons are available at all Tampa Y family centers and vary by season and location. We have a range of swim and safety programs: Adaptive Swim: This important program provides five free swim lessons to children with adaptive needs. The number one cause of accidental death for children with autism is drowning. Mobile Swim: Our Safety Around Water programming provides free water safety instruction in pools throughout the community with a focus on communities in need. Safety Around Water – Dry Land: Conducted on dry land, this program offers community instruction on how to keep children safe around water. Safety In Water Week: Enjoy four days of free instruction on being safe in the water at each of our family centers from March 11 to 14.

YMCA swim programs are set apart because we provide grant-funded and free opportunities for so many different communities. We are focused on breaking down barriers that prevent people from accessing important information and instruction about being safe IN and AROUND water for everyone. In addition, we offer American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, which is great for parents, guardians and adults of all ages who want to be prepared in the event of an emergency. Successful participants become certified and may apply to be a Tampa Y lifeguard and rule the pool all year long. Plus, The Junior Guard program at the Y is a leadership program for teens ages 13 and 14. Participants learn the skills required to earn a lifeguard certification and have the opportunity to work in the Aquatics environment. As a charity, thanks to donations from our community, we can provide FREE and ACCESSIBLE crucial life-saving skills. We aim to reach over 10,000 children with our drowning prevention focus as part of our newly launched Tampa Y Strategic Plan. With these programs, we can fasttrack delivery and provide services outside of our Y facilities to reach those who are most in need. With small classes and efficient lifeguards, we are doing our best to be the leader in drowning prevention advocacy, education and instruction!

Care for the Whole Family Learn how Child Life Specialists help children and soothe parents at St. Jospeh’s Children’s Hospital by Anu Varma Panchal

Intensive Care Unit, Strathman can show them pictures of what the NICU looks like. For a child who might worry about a sibling with an oxygen mask, Strathman can allow them to touch and explore the equipment to remove the sting of fear.

They allow kids to play. “We can normalize the hospital experience for kids,” Strathman says. “Play is the language of children.” From iPads to stress balls, video games to “I Spy” books, Strathman and her colleagues use a variety of tools to keep kids engaged and distracted. For patients who may spend weeks or even months in hospital, play also helps meet crucial developmental milestones. They plan special events. So that

When Ashlyn Strathman had surgery as a high schooler, it was a member of the hospital’s Child Life team who eased her nerves by giving the teen a hospital tour and teaching her relaxation techniques. Today, with a master’s degree in Child Life Studies, Strathman works at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in a role that allows her and the others on her team to teach, heal, counsel, play with and serve as a towering source of emotional support and understanding to every family that walks through the doors. You’ll find Child Life specialists everywhere in St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. They also are essential members of the pediatric health care team at BayCare’s St. Joseph’s Hospital-South and Mease Countryside Hospital. They stay beside patients receiving anesthesia so the child can have a comforting presence while they “fall asleep.” They receive panicked children coming out of ambulances in a trauma bay. They’ll reassure and calm patients as they are about to enter a CT scan.

They help prepare and support children for procedures. “We give them the chance to ask questions, to see everything that will be used,” Strathman explains. She’ll let a young patient feel an IV catheter to understand that the needle will not stay inside the whole time. She offers children choices—to sit on a chair or on mom’s lap, or to choose a numbing spray or “buzzy bee” vibrating tool for pain management. “Choices help facilitate a sense of control over the medical experience for kids.”

They provide diagnosis education. Whether having blood drawn or

receiving a serious diagnosis, children benefit from age-appropriate teaching about what might be coming their way. To explain a cancer diagnosis to a 4-year-old, for example, Strathman might use Legos to show how each brick is like a cell in the body, and a clump of them together forms a tumor, which the doctor will remove.

They support the whole family.

If an older sibling is upset about a baby who has to stay behind in the Newborn

kids who stay in hospital don’t miss out on fun milestones, Strathman and her peers plan everything from prom nights to Halloween and Gasparilla parades. They also organize visits from special guests such as Cinderella, Chewbacca or Santa Claus. Their favorite events? Clapout parades for patients who get to go home after prolonged hospital stays.

They provide grief support. If a child

is brought in from a near-drowning or car accident, panicked parents might not be in the best state to help their other children. Strathman steps in to provide grief support and counseling to siblings, explaining what might happen and dealing with loss in gentle but honest, age-appropriate ways, such as by helping create handprint keepsakes. When a child is enduring medical trauma, “it’s terrifying, and teens won’t often listen to mom,” says BayCare’s Amy Gall. When her son had to undergo an MRI scan at the hospital for a fractured vertebra, Gall was grateful to the Child Life Specialist who gave him a stress ball, answered all his questions (such as how long the wait and the scan would take), and even made sure she had his favorite music ready for when he put on his headphones for the procedure. “A Child Life Specialist can be a safe and trusted person for kids anywhere in the hospital,” Strathman says. “Parents’ coping affects kids as well. We are there to support the whole family unit.”
