The Children's Gasparilla Parade is Back! by Anu Varma Panchal

Ahoy lads and lassies! Rejoice, because our beloved city tradition, the Children's Gasparilla Parade, is BACK in 2022 for their 75th Anniversary! The Ashley Children’s Gasparilla Parade presented by Chick-fil-A Tampa Bay is Saturday, Jan. 22. Whether you’re a seadog who’s an expert in parade-watching or you’re new to Tampa Bay, this event is the highlight of the pirate calendar. You can watch more than 100 units rolling past, from elaborate f loats to dance units and school, community and neighborhood organizations marching by and throwing beads. The Children’s Gasparilla Parade will begin at 3:30 pm at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard, proceed north along Bayshore Boulevard and end at Edison Avenue. Pack a bag of snacks and come early to snag a spot for your blankets and picnic on the grassy median. There will also be vendors available on site. Though the event is free, you can pay for reserved seats. Options include $55 in advance (plus tax) for bleacher seats; $65 for reserved First Mate chair seats; and many more ticket and upgrade options. All these are available on a first come, first served basis, and prices will go up on the day of the event. For more information, to reserve seats or stock up on pirate gear, visit www.gasparillatreasures.com.

*Activities and vendors open at 11 a.m. along Bayshore Boulevard between Bay to Bay and Edison.

11 A.M. TO 1 P.M. Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Rodeo presented by Tampa Police Department Join Tampa Police and FDOT at the rodeo so your kids can test their skills on the bike course, learn life-saving safety skills and even get fitted for a free helmet while supplies last. Location: Bayshore Boulevard and South Rome Avenue.

NOON TO 3:15 P.M. Gasparilla Air Invasion Watch in awe at the precision parachute jump, be amazed by vintage aircraft, and jump for joy as the stunt planes perform their aerobatic moves over the bay.

1-2 P.M. Gasparilla Preschooler’s Stroll presented by Santiago of the Seas

In addition to the actual parade, there’s a bicycle rodeo and a preschooler’s stroll for the under-5 pirate set. This year’s Gasparilla Air Invasion with civilian aerobatic teams and vintage military aircraft includes an exciting twilight parachute jump. End the night with a magnificent fireworks display over the bay.

Watch the cutest parade in the world when pint-sized pirates under the age of 5 show off their pirate best along Bayshore Boulevard, riding decorated wagons, stroller and tricycles! It steps off at Bayshore Boulevard and Howard Avenue and continues down Bayshore Boulevard for half a mile to Rome Avenue. (Please note that no walk-ups are allowed on the day of the event. You have to have registered in advance to participate.)

So pack your beads and raid the costume closet for your bandanas and eye patches. The time to strut your pirate stuff up and down Bayshore Boulevard is around the corner!

3:30-6 P.M. Children’s Gasparilla Parade

First, grab your treasure map and pay attention to these details to help you plan your day:

Get ready to catch some beads! More than 100 units will make their way along Bayshore Boulevard to Edison Avenue, including krewes, local schools, community organizations, dance schools, school bands and more.

Expect lots of traffic and street closures, making street parking close to the route difficult to find. You might get lucky and snag a paid parking spot in a lot near the parade route, but if you’d rather not deal with it, plan to park in Fort Brooke Garage in downtown Tampa. The Whiting Street garage is another option, but it's a bit of a walk from the parade area.

par

G as

And one more detail: Parents, leave the grog at home. Children’s Gasparilla Parade is a family-friendly alcohol-free event. Save the libations for the following weekend’s Gasparilla Pirate Fest on Jan. 29.

A Tampa Bay Family Tradition

by Laura Byrne, photos provided by Bryce Alley

Gasparilla’s roots run deep in Tampa, dating back generations to 1904 when the very first ‘invasion’ was concocted as a way to promote the city and its May Day Festival. There was even a mythical tale penned about a legendary pirate, Jose Gaspar, to add intrigue as those first pirates invaded by horseback. Fast forward a century, and there is little doubt Gasparilla has helped put Tampa on the map, growing into one of the largest parades in the country. But, Gasparilla is so much more than a parade. It is a tradition for many families like Bryce Alley and L.B. Sierra. They grew up as children and grandchildren of Gasparilla’s founding krewe, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. We’re getting to know the parents as they share their own family ties to this beloved Tampa event and their hopes for the future as they pass the traditions down to their daughter, Leia.

L. B

L.B.: My father became a member of YMKG over 40 years ago. I grew up helping

him pack all of his beads before the parade and clean his cannon. When I was old enough to participate in the Children’s Parade, he would load me up with beads and cannon balls to throw. It’s amazing to see how large the Children’s Parade has become. When my dad used to take me to the Children’s Parade, it was in downtown Tampa and only about 5 blocks long. We’re still a few years away, but I can’t wait to be able to take my daughter Leia to the parade and participate in it with her, my wife and my dad.

L.B., your dad helped found YMKG’s Grenadiers. Tell us more about what it means to you to continue this family tradition of giving back to the community.

L.B.: Gaspar’s Grenadiers is the community outreach committee within YMKG.

Growing up, I would see pictures and hear stories of all the events my dad was participating in year-in and year-out with the Grenadiers. They would visit hospitals and schools and even be a part of Super Bowl festivities and pregame events. There’s nothing like being able to put a smile on a child’s face who might be going through a rough time in the hospital or thank the doctors and nurses who are on the frontlines, or surprise high school seniors with a scholarship. I feel very lucky to be able to participate in so many different types of events in our community, and to be able to do it with my dad is incredible.

in the early 1960s. My Father, Pirate C. Todd Alley, was a page for the royal court before he joined the krewe. My uncles are also pirates, and I can remember my cousin Hunter was the cutest page on the court! I have such fond memories of being a debutante and a maid on the royal court as well. It really does feel like Gasparilla has always been such an important part of my family—my mom even has a whole storage unit just for Gasparilla decorations!

Bryce, you are a member of the Krewe of Queen Anne’s Revenge (KQAR). Tell us more about this krewe’s story and why it’s so special to continue the Gasparilla family tradition.

Bryce: Established in 2010, the Krewe of

Queen Anne’s Revenge is an all-female krewe with over 200 active members. You can always spot our Annies with their brightly colored costumes and tropical island f lair. Our motif is a sparkly f leur-de-lis, and each year, we select a charity that a member is involved with to support. KQAR is just an amazing group of women that are all so supportive of each other and who love to have a good time while also giving back to the community. I joined back in 2017 and walked in my first Gasparilla in 2018. All of the Annies work so hard on their costumes, making each unique and colorful. I always love seeing everyone’s jacket liner because there’s typically a fun hidden gem on their costume (mine is a f loral Star Wars pattern).

Many families go back generations when it comes to involvement in Gasparilla. What is it like to have that kind of community connection, especially as you raise the next generation of Gasparilla kids?

Bryce: Getting to grow up and have Gasparilla morning all together, I swear it was

more exciting than Christmas morning half the time! And getting to see my dad on the parade route when I was a kid was always so exciting. He would always save a special bead for my sister and I to have. I loved getting to see the parade, and now being in it, L.B. and I always meet up on the route! So many of our family traditions are centered around Gasparilla, and I love that we get to create some new ones for Leia too. I cannot wait for her to be old enough to be in the Children’s Parade and watch her throw beads like her mom, dad, grandfathers, uncles and great-grandfather!

L.B.: It’s incredible to see so many of our family and friends involved. As we get

older, more and more of our friend’s sons and daughters are becoming involved. It’s exciting to see traditions continue and families being able to share in something as special as Gasparilla.

Gasparilla is so much more than a party, right? There is a charitable aspect of it too!

Bryce: Yes! Both KQAR and YMKG are so involved in bettering the com-

munity. The YMKG Community Fund provides college scholarships to local high school seniors, while KQAR supports a different charity every year! Some past charities have been the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Quantum Leap Farm, Renew Haiti and Rachel’s House. All of the krewes do such a great job supporting the community, and it is definitely a life lesson I hope to instill in our daughter—be the rising tide that lifts all boats.

What are some of your favorite Gasparilla memories as kids?

Bryce: Definitely sitting on my dad’s lap while he was getting “made up” on the morning of the parade. We would always go down to the Tampa Yacht & Country Club for breakfast, and I loved getting to watch my dad turn into a pirate. I can’t wait to watch our daughter sit on her father’s lap and create those photos and memories for her now too. Bryc e

L.B.: I remember we would go to Bayshore early in the morning so we could get our spot for the day. We would put out blankets and chairs, and pack coolers with lunch/ snacks and wait hours for the parade to start. When my dad found us along the route, he would run over to us and give me a special bead that he had hidden in his vest and empty shell casings that you could still smell the gun powder from.

a

d,

Any insider tips for families as they plan to attend the parades?

To d

dA l l e y, i n 199 3

Bryce: While there are so many great places to view the parade, I think the best

spots are the ones you can reserve! The bleachers are such a great, safe way to see all the action and try to catch all of the beads. I also love getting to participate in the f lotilla on parade day. There is just something so cool about a giant pirate ship firing cannons all the way into the bay!

L.B.: On invasion day (Gasparilla Pirate Fest), I don’t think there is a better spot

than being in the f lotilla. Seeing and hearing the pirate ship on full display and all the boats following the ship into downtown is one of the coolest things anyone can do.

We have many newcomers to Tampa Bay—how would you describe Gasparilla to them and why it is such a big part of our city’s story?

Bryce: The easiest description is normally “it’s a giant Pirate Mardi Gras” but it

really is so much more than the parade. With YMKG going all the way back to 1904, it’s crazy to think they used to ride in on horseback! It is such a great event for the city, and I think it truly helps Tampa show off why it is such a great place to live!

L.B.: Considering all the pirate lore and pirate history in Florida, how can you not

think of Gasparilla and pirates when talking about Tampa? Not many people realize that Gasparilla is considered the 3rd largest parade in the country (behind the Macy’s Parade and the Rose Bowl Parade).

Bryce: Just a cool note- my dad was wearing his father’s pirate shir t during the cover photoshoot! It has definitely seen better days and he now only wears it for the Captains Ball, but it's one of his few homages to his dad. And Leia’s little costume was made with love by our sweet friend Anne Bar tlett who owns South Tampa Trading Company. JANUARY 2022 TampaBayParenting.com

Gasparilla Pirate Fest Ultimate Guide with TampaBayDateNightGuide.com

by John Byrne, photos by Ryan McGibbeny

Gasparilla - the quintessential uniquely Tampa holiday and excuse to dress as a fake pirate – invades Tampa Jan. 29! After skipping last year due to You-Know-What, this infamously famous pirate party is back with all the usual B’s - boats, beads, brunches and perhaps a boozy beverage. From brunch parties to invading pirate ships, miles of parade floats to millions of beads, the Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest is a swashbuckling-fun day not to be missed!

BRUNCH + PIRATE INVASION South Tampa sets the stage for just shy of a billion brunch parties on Gasparilla morning, as revelers head toward viewing spots to watch the incoming pirate invasion. The pirate ship Jose Gasparilla emerges from Hillsborough Bay around 11:30 a.m. and, escorted by roughly 1,000 boats, docks at the Tampa Convention Center at 1 p.m. and proceeds to plunder the city. Restaurants throughout South Tampa host invasion brunches, and the official Invasion Brunch at the Convention Center provides prime viewing of the incoming f lotilla. Viewing Tips: snag a spot at the bridges, hotels and restaurants along the downtown riverfront.

PARADE OF PIRATES Post-plundering, the happy pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla lead a 4.5-mile parade of over 100 f loats, thousands of costumed parade performers and millions of beads. Beginning around 2 p.m. at Bay to Bay and Bayshore boulevards, and following along the route into Tampa’s downtown, the parade ends around 6 p.m. Viewing Tips: find a ticket to a party along the waterside, buy reserved seating from GasparillaTreasures.com, or arrive early to claim a public viewing spot along the non-water side of Bayshore or in the downtown area.

The entire downtown riverfront, MacDill Park and Curtis Hixon Park set the stage for an expanded Piratefest featuring concerts, performances and great entertainment throughout the day.

Pint-Sized Pirate

DI Y F U N by Karimah Henry, @craftingafunlife

Ahoy, Matey! It’s a pirate's life for us in Tampa Bay! We're so excited about Gasparilla this year. Are you ready for the pirate invasion? It's almost here! Looking for easy projects to celebrate this awesome time of the year? I have a fun craft and DIY costumes that are perfect for your little buccaneer.

Supplies

DIY PIRATE COSTUME Supplies

● White shirt ● Black shorts or pants ● Bandana ● Pirate temporary tattoos ● Black makeup ● Felt sheets (red, black or white)

DIY PIRATE CRAFT

● Pirate hat ● Red fabric ● Eye patch ● Lace fabric ● Safety pins

Directions

1. Grab an old white shirt and black pants or shorts from the closet. You can also find these items at your local thrift store. 2. If using a plain white shirt, cut a triangle shaped pattern along the bottom of the shirt and bottom of the sleeves. For dress shirts, roll the sleeves and pin a lace fabric piece to the top of the shirt. 3. Finally, add a black vest and red fabric piece around the waist. Have your child wear a pirate hat or bandana. Add a beard, mustache and temporary tattoos to your little pirate.

● Cardstock (white, skin tone colors, blue, red and black) ● Scissors ● Pencil ● Glue stick ● 2 large googly eyes ● Small red rhinestone or pom pom ● Tacky glue (optional) ● Black marker

Directions

1. From each of the skin tone color, red and white pieces of cardstock, draw and cut out a large circle approximately 8 inches in diameter. 2. Next, fold the red circle in half and cut along the fold. After that, glue one half of the red circle at the top of the pirate’s head (skin tone circle) to create the pirate head scarf. Using the other half of the red circle, cut 2 small strips, and then cut the ends of each strip at an angle. Glue one strip on the outer edge of the right side of the scarf. Glue the second strip at an angle to the right of the first one. These will form the “ties” for the scarf. 3. Cut 5-6 small circles from white cardstock and glue them to the red scarf to resemble polka dots. 4. Draw and cut a mustache and eyebrows from black cardstock. Use scraps of red cardstock to make a mouth for the pirate. 5. Glue the eyebrows right under the scarf, and then glue the googly eyes underneath the eyebrows. 6. For the nose, glue the small red rhinestone or pom pom onto the face. 7. Cut the mustache in half and glue the pieces under the nose. Glue the mouth under the mustache. 8. Use a black marker to make dots at the bottom of the face to create a beard. 9. Cut the white circle in half. Glue the pirate face to the top of one half of the circle; this is the shirt. 10. Finally, cut out half-inch strips of paper from blue cardstock. Make sure they are at least as long as the widest section of the pirate’s shirt. Glue the blue strips onto the white half circle to resemble a striped shirt.

Self-Care

As a parent, time is valuable. There never seems to be enough of it and prioritizing self-care for yourself may end up taking a back seat to work, home and family. However, not taking time for yourself can create added stress and do more harm than good. Self-care does not necessarily mean a day at the spa. It can be focusing on an emotional, physical, mental or social area. It’s important to try and carve out time to take care of YOU, whether it’s ten minutes a day or an entire day. As we begin 2022, here are a few self-care tips to help get your new year started off right.

Habits for The New Year By Brie Gorecki

GET SOCIAL

Most gyms and fitness centers have January specials. With centers all over Tampa Bay, the YMCA offers affordable plans AND childcare at most locations. Some companies offer Gym Pass, which gives you access to fitness classes and gyms in your area, and many healthcare providers offer monetary incentives for going to the gym and getting a certain number of steps in each day. Check sites like Groupon for class packages to local health clubs. If larger fitness centers are not your thing, local groups such as Insane Fit Girls and FIT4MOM Tampa offer smaller group classes that are often held outdoors or in recreational facilities.

PAMPER YOURSELF

Places such as Lit Labs, Salt and the Natural Spa have unique services to help improve your health and wellbeing, such as whole-body cryotherapy, red light therapy and pulse electromagnetic field therapy. If a spa day away does not work with your budget or schedule, setting aside time for yourself at home can be just as relaxing. Take a bubble bath, give yourself a manicure and pedicure, or try out a new face mask. Local mom-owned businesses, Savasana Scrubs and The Blushing Honey Boutique, sell moisturizing sugar scrubs, lip balms and bath bombs that will make you feel relaxed and refreshed without having to leave the house.

Perhaps you loved photography when you were younger but haven’t had time to focus on it in recent years. Or maybe you always wanted to learn how to cook Greek cuisine. Whatever your interests are or were, learning a new skill or picking up an old one can M boost your mood and energy level. Websites zy Co such as MasterClass and Shaw Academy offer everything from interior design and economics to pet care and sports nutrition. Local places such as AJ’s Kitchen Drawer and Cozymeal have an array of cooking classes from beginner level to intermediate.

TREAT YOURSELF

Subscription boxes are a fun way to treat yourself to something new without having to leave the house (and who doesn’t love getting packages in the mail?). FabFitFun and AllTrue offer quarterly lifestyle boxes filled with beauty products and home goods while Fabletics, Stitch Fix and Curateur will send you Fa clothing and accessories based on your style bF itF profile. SnackCrate imports snacks from around the world while Thrive Market and Love With Food will deliver healthy snacks and pantry items straight to your door. Firstleaf and Winc send cases of wine based on your palate and lifestyle profile. un

Whether it’s a massage at a spa or a bubble bath at home, pampering yourself can boost your mood and mental wellbeing. Places such as Massage Envy and Hand & Stone Massage have monthly membership packages that will force you (in a good way!) to carve out time for yourself each month. ResortPass allows you to visit local hotels and resorts for a day to enjoy all that they have to offer without booking an overnight stay. y Cl ea Some hotels also offer monthly memberships so rw ater you can make daytime relaxation a regular part of your monthly routine.

SHARPEN UP YOUR SKILLS (OR LEARN A NEW ONE!)

l

Exercising and eating right is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions. The key is getting into a routine and figuring out what works best for you. Whether you prefer boot camp classes or hot yoga, listening to your body and enjoying what you are doing will make it easier to stick with long-term.

ea

GET PHYSICAL

Socializing is a key component for mental health. Although scheduling can be tricky, consider planning a monthly dinner or happy hour with friends. Joining a book club is also a great way to socialize and – bonus – you’ll also get to set aside alone time each month to read a new book! While the kids are in school, get together with a friend to go walking or grab a coffee. Check your area for local moms’ groups as well. A great resource for finding moms with kids the same age as yours, most of them host regular outings.

BE HAPPY

Most importantly, find what makes you happy. Whether it’s getting up early to have coffee and some peace and quiet, or starting a new hobby, make sure that you are focusing on yourself. Happy 2022!

Instead of a Sleepover

try a sleepunder by Maggie Rodriguez

It was just eight seconds long, but a recent viral video on TikTok and Instagram sparked a parenting debate over “unpopular parenting decisions.” Social media influencer and mother of two, Tara Huck, opened the flood gates when she proclaimed, “I don’t allow sleepovers.” As a parent with a “no sleepover rule” myself, I decided to pose the question to the panel of local moms I assemble every week for “Maggie and the Moms,” the parenting segment on WFLA/News Channel 8’s Daytime lifestyle show. While my fellow moms were not exactly gung-ho about their children spending the night away from home, they all agreed that they would allow it—but only when their kids are old enough and only at the home of a family member or close friend. Panelist Natassja Prose, who blogs about parenting on Prose and Company, piqued our interest with a suggestion none of us had heard before: What about a sleepunder? We all loved the idea and thought every mom should know about it, so we asked Natassja to share all the details.

WHAT IS A SLEEPUNDER? A great alternative to the traditional sleepover, but no one actually spends the night. All the fun, from sharing dinner together to playing games in pajamas.

WHY IS IT A GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO A SLEEPOVER? It’s great because they can enjoy all the same activities together and there’s an end time. No need to worry about how they’re doing in the middle of the night. Plus, a big bonus, they aren’t staying up until late and coming home super cranky the next day!

WHAT KINDS OF ACTIVITIES DO YOU SUGGEST? We’ve made pizzas or a special dessert. Then the kids change into pajamas and either play games or watch a movie together.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL SLEEPUNDER SCHEDULE FOR YOUR FAMILY? ● 6 p.m.: Arrival and play time ● 7 p.m.: Time to make pizzas or have dinner delivered ● 8 p.m.: PJ time ● 8:30 p.m.: Pick a game or a movie ● 9 p.m.: Dessert or special popcorn mix-ins (think M&Ms with popcorn or special seasonings)

istockphoto.com/ olegback

● 10-11 p.m.: Depending on the age, it’s time to head home after the movie/games

YOUR #1 TIP FOR A SUCCESSFUL SLEEPUNDER: The key is to make it a special night so they don’t even remember there’s no “sleeping over” happening! I’ve been known to even pick up a special new toothbrush for my kiddos or even our guest if it’s at our house! Photos by Natassja Prose

Drink in the Joy JANIE’S JOURNEY by Tara Payor, Ph.D., photos by The Dashing Ginger

Parenting:

an intricate, gloriously chaotic web. Chaotic moments nudge parents toward the bottle: the wine; the beer; the whiskey. It’s especially true for women and increasingly so during COVID-19. Alcohol delivery: check. Pressures to look glam, raise perfect children, remain fit and rested, and have a handle on an everchanging context didn’t dissipate as social isolation emerged. Alcohol became a loyal friend— apparent on sites like TikTok. Initially humorous? Sure. Potentially lasting damage? 100 proof. Janie Porter, former TV news reporter turned stayat-home-mom to four kids (Sullivan, 10; Porter, 8; Kendall, 6; and Huntington, 3), shares how what started as wanting a reward (i.e. wine) after a day with bold kids devolved into familiar hangovers. In time for Dry January, started in 2012 by British charity Alcohol Change UK, Porter provides perspective on nurturing a fulfilling life without filling the tumbler.

24

TampaBayParenting.com JANUARY 2022

TBPM: What are your thoughts on Dry January? JP: Reevaluating your relationship with

alcohol is always brave. There are no rules on how to do it and, if a 31-day pause starts the journey, just promise yourself today. Soon, you’ll proudly have a few todays under your belt.

TBPM: When does drinking become a problem? JP: It’s an issue when you feel it is—when

it’s out of alignment with who you are. If numbing uncomfortable emotions is the intention, that’s problematic. Let go of alcohol-as-crutch and get to problems’ roots. Is there sadness? Feeling alone in a marriage? Left out of friend groups? Confused about what you’re doing in life? These are real feelings and valid issues. Listening to questions is key because life’s stresses aren’t vanishing. I was coming home at 2 a.m. not remembering my night out—an issue. Needing alcohol to make things fun screams, “Reexamine!” I wanted my friend, alcohol, at the fun stuff. Our culture includes alcohol in every thing. Check in with yourself; determine why you need alcohol to enhance events.

TBPM: Why did you stop drinking? JP: On 3/28/21, I could barely function.

Hungover. I drank to escape sadness from an upsetting incident on 3/27. Throwing up in front of my kid, I thought, ‘I am so done with this.’ I saw that my love of drinking wasn’t getting me the thriving life I wanted. Overdrinking is about fixing problems in the best way we know how. Our culture applauds it. Messages that “mommy needs a drink” are validated. The habit doesn’t work.

TBPM: Have your social groups changed since you stopped drinking? JP: Alcohol-centered friend groups went

away. If drinking equals belonging, do you want belonging in that group? Thinking we’ll be the big bird in the room if we aren’t drinking is paralyzing. Realistically, no one cares. My closest friends are genuinely curious because they love me. I’m not stopping anyone’s good time. Wanting acceptance is innate. Still, I’d rather disappoint others by not drinking than disappoint myself in my journey.

TBPM: Why was the day that you stopped drinking the first day of the rest of your life? JP: I’m living and standing in my own power. Alcohol weakens that. Relying on alcohol to get through the day makes me a powerless victim. I don’t have the constant noise of ‘what am I going to drink next?’ I feel better and I’m proud of myself every morning. I’m enjoying the simple fun of just watching my kids. I’m dealing with emotions in lifegiving ways.

TBPM: Why don’t you use the words alcoholic and sober? JP: Labels hold people back from reevaluating their relationship with alcohol. Consider yourself curious enough to pause the relationship with alcohol and uncover why you can’t go without it.

TBPM: What resources have helped you? JP: I hired a Certified Pro-

fessional Recovery Coach, Heather, of Ditched the Drink. Now, I’m also coaching. Eight months in, I’m not a certified life or recovery coach. I am a mother in the trenches, doing the work and walking alongside others on their journey to living with purpose and joy. Not shaming past behaviors is helpful. Sharing my story is shedding the shame, which is frequently hidden. Telling your story is empowering.

Last Call Women, disproportionately impacted by pandemic-related-challenges, are less likely to seek help for alcohol use. Dry January invites examining and journaling about patterns. For example, when do you crave alcohol most? Overdrinking is not a solution. A life filled with experiences you can remember, unlike the finest vintage, is priceless—100 proof.

This month, we are thrilled to turn the tables and focus on Julie Tingley, who has done so much over the years to support other women in our community—including writing this column monthly for us. Her latest venture, Wee Macree, continues uplifting others by donating 40% of the sales of each child’s shirt to a nonprofit partner that focuses on “kids helping kids.”

by Laura Byrne

Tell us more about what inspired you to launch Wee Macree. The inspiration for Wee Macree truly began after I left my corporate job to stay at home with Ella and Kate years ago. Faced with the choice to accept the reality of a demoralizing workplace or seek new purpose outside of my career, I opted to build a community of support among professional women in Tampa Bay. Setting the example of empowerment, inclusion and collaboration became the driving force that motivated me to ultimately grow a 400+ member movement with my daughters by my side. The result was unintentional but magical: as Ella and Kate observed the local women rise up through connection and support, the same happened with them. They started to do better in school. They demonstrated more confidence in their athletic activities. They weren’t afraid to try new things. Skipping ahead to a different time—in a climate marked with uncertainty, social setbacks and human detachment, I saw the potential in shifting my focus toward all children, growing a community just for them that would drive inspiration, purpose and empathy.

Why is it so important for you to keep your daughters closely involved with the mission? They are my greatest inspirations! Seeing the world through their eyes shows me what can be, and what should be. I want the future to be better for Ella, Kate and all of their friends, so their involvement with Wee Macree is a constant reminder to see this mission through. Plus, they’re my best in-house focus group, and I can see them leading upcoming projects with the brand.

What does Wee Macree stand for and/or what inspired the name?

26

TampaBayParenting.com JANUARY 2022

An in-person launch on World Children’s Day this year was very important to me. When it comes to taking this brand—that is committed to doing social good—to market, it had to happen on a day with inherent meaning that aligns with Wee Macree and solidify the first impression I wanted to make. While I did not know Courtney Vermette personally before I approached her about hosting the launch at Butter Bug Boutique, I did know the product lines she carries, and each of them have a giveback component. When she and I finally became better acquainted, I learned that she selects brands made by moms in an effort to build a supportive community of women within her own industry. Naturally, this is my person, and I was honored to partner with her. I still pinch myself that she welcomed me so willingly and gave me such gracious support before I ever showed her a shirt. She is a gem in our Tampa Bay community.

The last couple of years have been difficult for many families and even yours personally—what can we all learn from these hardships as we move into a new year? I’ve very openly shared through social media, and by having to step back from leading the local KNOW Women group, that my family has been working through my husband’s cancer diagnosis. Because we chose not to burden Ella and Kate with the stress of what we have been through this year in an effort to protect their naivety and joy, it has forced Ken and I to show up- no matter what- with a mindset of wholeness, gratitude and strength. Every day we conquer this diagnosis is a victory in our book, and I think that’s relatable to anyone facing a hard time or navigating a tough season: Take it day by day, place one foot in front of the other, focus on one breath at a time. Everything always gets better… and when you choose hope, anything is possible. photo by Christina Jones Photography

“Macree” is the Irish Gaelic term of endearment “mo chroí” which means “my heart.” I worked with a great local trademark attorney who guided me, pushing me to be more creative and dig deeper for something that would be meaningful to me (thanks, Erica DiAngelo!). Landing on an identity that offers a nod to my culture made this very personal when it came to honoring my family. The word “Wee” - while it sounds cute and catchy in front of “Macree” also means that this is a brand for small children (ages 3-10), and building a community involves “we.”

Families can purchase a Wee Macree shirt and join the mission at www.weemacree.com, but you’ve also handpicked ButterBug Boutique in South Tampa to launch the line instore. What is so special about this boutique?

Toy BLOCKS & All That by Erica Turchin and Lissette Godwin, Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County

freepik.com/ master1305

Most children—including mom!—probably played with a set of blocks as an infant and toddler. It’s a toy staple in households and early childhood classrooms. As your child’s first love and first teacher, have you ever thought about how powerful this simple toy is when you first set them on the f loor in front of your baby? If you’re anything like me, probably not; you just looked at them as a toy to entertain your baby for a few moments until it was on to the next toy. Think about the phases in which a child plays with blocks from an infant to a 4-year-old. As an infant, they probably banged the blocks together, put them in their mouth and cried when you took a block from their tiny hand. As they become more verbal, the blocks become a tower; everything is “My block,” and frustration occurs when they don’t understand why the tall block tower tips over. As they prepare for kindergarten, your child’s block tower becomes a castle with roaring dinosaurs around it, but now they are planning how the castle will

look with paper and crayons, and they use trial and error to get the structure just right while building. In all these scenarios, your child is experiencing social and emotional learning, vital skills to cope with in the big world ahead of them. And now it’s you (mom) that guides your child through these block play phases by modeling positive behaviors and words. When your baby is banging blocks together, demonstrate the gentle touch you use when playing with toys. When they cry because you took a block out of their mouth, use a nurturing tone to tell them everything will be fine while explaining it’s time to clean up. Young toddlers are notorious for not sharing and independent play. Use this phase as a time to teach taking turns and encouraging them to use their words when they are frustrated. Help them to understand their feelings but starting the conversation when you notice the change in behavior with something such as “Are you upset with mommy because I took the green block you wanted to use for your tower?” You are validating their feelings when you do this and create a safe space for them to express themselves. When the tall block tower has grown to a castle taking up the living room f loor, let your child be the leader in the activity. Have them think of the design and materials they’ll use when building and assist when needed. This is also a great time to introduce responsibility with the simple task of having them clean up their creation before moving on to the next activity.

So, mom, the next time the blocks come out for play, remember that it’s more than just playtime, it’s a bonding and creative experience with your little one. In these moments, you are teaching positive mannerisms and language, self-esteem, sharing, problem-solving, leadership skills and so much more. Now your child has the building blocks for success as they move from playing at home to playing in the classroom and even to their first job. GO YOU, you’re an amazing teacher, and I bet you didn’t even realize it!

With the motto “Healthy Hearts and Minds,” Patel Elementary’s emphasis on hands-on learning supports a high degree of student engagement with a primary focus on the overall wellness of students from the inside out.

Known for its student-centered approach to teaching and learning, Shorecrest is continually on the leading edge of innovation in education. In 2016 the school opened the Center for Medical Sciences applied-science track for high school students, won a grant from Steelcase Education for its interdisciplinary work in middle school, and became an Apple Distinguished School. Other signature programs include the Global Scholars Initiative for students interested in international studies and the STEAM Signature Program which allows students to earn a certificate in computer science, engineering or entrepreneurship and design. Shorecrest is ranked the #1 STEM High School in Pinellas County according to Niche.com. Shorecrest offers its students a nationally recognized performing and visual arts program, competitive athletics, opportunities for engaged service learning and the best-fit college placement in the region. SHORECREST.ORG

Even from their earliest years of elementary school, students will be introduced to Project Based Learning. This method of learning fosters a deeper understanding of academic content and builds a stronger motivation to learn rather than traditional textbook-driven instruction. With student-centered adults who support student success through the rigorous curriculum, the school offers a nurturing environment where children can learn and grow within a safe, positive school climate. Families can expect two-way communication, collaborating on what’s best for each student, and cultivating positive relationships between teachers and parents. Patel Elementary School is currently accepting applications at www.patelelementary.org. The school will open in August 2022 with kindergarten, first grade and second grade classes. They will add a grade level each year until they meet capacity with 652 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The lottery will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1. PRESENTED BY SHORECREST PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Building a Love of Learning Through STEAM by Raffi Darrow, Shorecrest Preparatory School

On a Saturday in January, Tampa Bay families can participate in family-friendly activities centered on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) when the sixth annual St. Pete STEAMfest takes place Jan. 29 at Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg. Shorecrest, a preschool-12th grade independent school in St. Pete, has sponsored and hosted the event since its inception in 2016. “STEAM subjects and projects are a part of what we do every day at Shorecrest,” says Dr. Anna Baralt, Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology and STEAMfest Committee Chair. “We launched STEAMfest as an outlet for sharing this kind of engaging, experiential learning with the greater community.” The community has embraced STEAMfest, drawing families from all over the Tampa Bay Area as well as community partners from other educational organizations. STEAMfest 2020 welcomed exhibitions from Busch Gardens, Great Explorations, The James Museum, Imagine Museum, The Wonder Studio and iD Tech Camps—to name a few. Children excitedly engaged in each learning activity, breaking only to get snacks from one of the food trucks on site. St. Petersburg dad Matt Gowens brought his 4-year-old son to STEAMfest for the second consecutive year. “I work in technology and it’s fun to be able to take a step back from being so in the weeds and so in the details and see that kids are actually putting these things to practical uses and doing the things that you do in your job,” Gowens says. The 2020 festival featured 35+ booths for children in preschool through eighth grade, including robotics demonstrations, arts and crafts, design and engineering challenges, mad scientist games and coding apps. After a hiatus in 2021 due to COVID-19, STEAMfest is back in January 2022. The event will be held outdoors and feature a dedicated area for younger children ages 3-6, led by faculty of The Experiential School of Tampa Bay, the 3, 4 and 5-year-old program at Shorecrest, and educators from The Wonder Studio, a local, play-based, multi-sensory program for toddlers and their caregivers.

Inspire a Love for Learning this Year by Samuel Scaglione, photos by Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library

January is a time for new goals. A new year begins, and many people aspire to make changes or pause to think critically about the future. This can lead us to ponder which actions we can take to help our children progress and grow. Here are some practices you and your child can implement at home to ensure this year is filled with laughter, new experiences and a love for reading.

Read Write Talk Sing Play Reading to children early and often is key to school and learning success, so make reading fun! Find books on topics that your child is interested in so you can gain and keep their attention. Or start with the books that you enjoyed as a child. It will make for an enthusiastic and nostalgic reading experience.

Drawing pictures with your child is a great way to model writing and how to hold a crayon. Sharing stories about what you have drawn encourages your child’s imagination and narrative skill development. Ask questions that encourage your child to add to their story. Remember to take a moment to write some letters too! Names are an excellent place to begin.

A way to work on narrative skills before a child is speaking is to talk in a way that traditionally would require a response. It sounds a bit funny, but you can ask your baby questions and answer for them. This models conversation and communication. When your toddler can verbally respond, elaborate on their short answers to expand their vocabulary.

Singing helps slow language so your child can pick out the different sounds or phonemes in words. Often caregivers are shy about their voices, but your child does not care what your voice sounds like! They get enjoyment from hearing the song. Sing songs you remember or make up your own lyrics to familiar tunes—they do not have to be Grammy Award winners!

Playing allows children to experience new situations and concepts in a familiar environment. Organized play allows caregivers to introduce specialized vocabulary that may not be used in regular conversation. We’re astronauts! Let’s repair the solar panel on the satellite. What tools do we need? Look out for asteroids!

Implementing a new positive habit is rewarding, but it can also be difficult and scary—especially if it is not something you are familiar with. Just remember that if you are trying, you are succeeding! If you ever need additional support, the library’s story time team offers ideas, resources and inspiration at your local library’s story time programs. Come enjoy books, rhymes and songs with your child while building the five Every Child Ready to Read skills mentioned above. Find a library story time near you at HCPLC.org/Events. And why not gamify the learning process for increased fun and motivation? Sign up for the library’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. You can use an early literacy app that allows you to track and celebrate reading milestones. This program is completely free, and participants receive a book to add to their home library. Visit HCPLC.org/Kids to sign up for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.

Preparing for Your Child’s Surgery: Top 5 Questions Answered story and photo by Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital staff

If or when your child needs surgery, it can be a very stressful time. However, knowing what to expect can be helpful for parents and caregivers. Raquel Gonzalez, MD, MHCM, pediatric and surgical critical care surgeon at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and program director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, provides several pointers that can make the experience a little bit easier.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE THE OPERATION?

HOW DO I EXPLAIN TO MY CHILD WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY?

Before the operation, the preadmission team will call with information on your arrival and surgery time, and provide instructions on when your child should stop eating and drinking. Your child should have an empty stomach several hours before the operation to make sure that the process of falling asleep with general anesthesia is safe. Clear liquids, which are see-through liquid substances, are usually allowed about three hours before the procedure.

The surgeon will help explain the process to you and your child during the initial surgical clinic visit. During the preoperative assessment, the team will continue to explain the process to your child. Some facilities like Johns Hopkins All Children’s also have Child Life specialists, who are specifically trained to help. Sometimes they are present in the preoperative suite, using several resources such as books and toys to help your child with understanding the process.

ARE MY CHILD AND I REQUIRED TO GET TESTED FOR COVID-19 BEFORE THE OPERATION?

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT ANY ISSUES AFTER SURGERY?

Many facilities do require COVID-19 testing prior to surgery. At Johns Hopkins All Children’s, guardians are not required to be tested for COVID-19 before the operation; however, your child does need a COVID-19 test within three days of the operation. This will be arranged by the preadmission team and can be done at our facility, or at a facility of your preference. We typically need results within 24 hours of the operation.

At Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, families receive a summary of the operative visit, which includes the surgeon’s team’s contact information and general reasons to call such as fever, worsening pain or swelling, unusual bruising or bleeding and concerns about the incision. Caregivers should call the number provided with any questions or concerns. If the child experiences chest pain, trouble breathing, or any other pressing issues, parents should call 911 immediately.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO THE HOSPITAL? ● Your ID and health insurance card ● A sweater/comfortable clothes (it can get cold in the hospital waiting area) ● A book/magazine (especially if the operation is scheduled for several hours) ● Phone charger ● Your child’s comfort item ● Water bottle for yourself

First Tee Introduces Golf and Key Values to Bay Area Kids by Tampa YMCA Staff, photo provided by Tampa YMCA

Brittany Altomare

P

ro golfer and First Tee - Tampa Bay board member Brittany Altomare has been very busy lately. She represented the United States for the second time as part of the team at the Solheim Cup. Held every two years, the event has grown into the most coveted trophy in women’s professional golf team competition. Altomare calls it the highlight of her golf career: “Not many people get to represent their country and then be able to wear the stars and stripes and the red, white and blue- it’s an amazing feeling. Golf is so selfish. You’re always playing for yourself but with Solheim you get to a chance to play for more than just you. You’re playing for your country and your teammates. It’s such an incredible experience and the fans - the energy they that they bring… Especially playing on home soil (in Toledo, Ohio) was just amazing. It was incredible.” Altomare then got on the road for three more tournaments, got married and honeymooned in Italy. Now that she’s back, she says she’s excited to be even more involved with First Tee and get to know the kids a little better. First Tee is an international youth organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people. During school breaks, golf lessons, golf team and summer camp programs, they help shape the lives of young people by teaching and reinforcing values like integrity, respect and perseverance through the game of golf. The Tampa Y operates the First Tee - Tampa Bay program, the leading organization for junior golf in Tampa.

66

TampaBayParenting.com JANUARY 2022

“My favorite part of the board meetings is when they bring on a kid that’s part of the First Tee program, hear their story, how it’s impacted their lives and all that stuff,” Altomare says. “The kids are the best and I love hearing their stories. I can’t wait to get more involved, especially in the off-season here in Tampa and when I have time. I’m really excited for that part of it.” Altomare was introduced to the sport when she was around nine or ten years old by her dad and grandparents and stayed with it. “I played a lot of other sports growing up, but then when I got to high school, I realized the only thing I was really good at was golf so I kind of stuck to that,” she says. “It was a lot of fun.” First Tee has nine core values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. Altomare can think of a tenth one. “I think for me probably just being adaptable,” Altomare says. “My college coach actually would say this all the time: Golf will throw you curve balls. You hit good shots. You get bad breaks. You get good breaks and I think that relates to life as well. You can do everything right and get bad breaks and you can do everything wrong and get good breaks. It’s life–that’s golf and I think that’s good lessons to learn how you deal with the ups and downs.”

2022 Task #1: Check That Car Seat! By Laura Byrne

We don’t have to tell you that installing a car seat can get complicated. But doing it correctly is vital to your child’s safety in the event of a crash. Unfortunately, the numbers show that many of us are doing it wrong. A recent study by AAA and the National Safety Council revealed:

TBPM: When car seat shopping, the most expensive isn’t the best, right?

● 52% of car seats inspected by Child Passenger Safety technicians are improperly installed and used.

TBPM: What’s the most common mistake you see parents make with their child’s car seat?

● 73% of forward-facing car seats are incorrectly installed.

● 90% of children using adult lap-andshoulder safety belts under the age of 10 should still be in a car or booster seat. There is some good news. There are free and inexpensive resources available right there in Tampa Bay to help ensure your child’s car seat is correctly installed. We recently spoke with Michelle Sterling of Safe Kids Greater Tampa Bay and BayCare Kids to learn more about how families can take advantage of their car seat services.

TBPM: First–for those not familiar with Safe Kids, what exactly does the organization do for families? MS: Safe Kids is a worldwide coalition. We do injury prevention for children. We have home safety, pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, we do a lot of water safety, child passenger safety… anything that we can do to help keep kids from getting hurt.

TBPM: How can parents take advantage of the car seat inspections offered by Safe Kids? MS: We provide inspections at our office for a $20 fee. We provide free ones at the Children’s Board Family Resource Centers, and there are seven of them in Hillsborough County. With those, they would just call our office and make an appointment for a day when we are already there teaching one of our free classes. So it’s more of a hindrance on availability for families if they want the free one—the $20 ones, they have more of a say. Find your local Children’s Board Family Resource Center: https://www.familysupporthc.org

TBPM: Do the recent numbers from the studies by AAA and National Safety Council seem about right for what you see locally in Tampa Bay when inspecting car seats? MS: Almost all the time there is something wrong. Once in a while, I’ll have that dad that did everything right, but there are a lot of cases where we see it installed incorrectly, it might not be the right seat for the vehicle and also, it might not be the right seat for the child.

MS: I always tell them you want to make sure it’s the best fit for your child, also the fit for your vehicle because every vehicle is different. One seat might fit in my vehicle but might not fit in my husband’s vehicle.

MS: I would say the most common mistake is turning their child from rear facing to forward facing too soon. They need to be rear facing until they are at least two, the longer the better. A lot of times parents will say, they wanted to look outside, look out front and no…they didn’t. You wanted them to. They don’t know any better. Another thing is they say their feet are crisscrossing against the back of the seat and we tell them, that’s okay. Their spine is still developing so we want to make sure they are safer rear facing and for as long as possible. In an accident or if you have to stop abruptly, that rear facing seat cradles the child, so their spine is not taking the impact and not thrusting them forward.

TBPM: There are different stages of car seats. Do you find parents move their child out of a booster seat too soon? MS: We want to keep them in a booster until they are at least 4 feet 9 inches. There’s not even an age range because I’m 5 feet 2 inches, but we just want to make sure that when you put them in a seat belt and they are sitting without a booster seat, that their feet are able to make a correct L over the seat and their feet are touching the ground. You don’t want their feet dangling in the air. The location of the seat belt should be going over their hip bone and their collar bone. Vehicles are not designed for children, so if they’re too little, the seat belt is going into their neck and the soft part of their stomach.

TBPM: What age is best for moving to a booster seat? MS: Follow the height and weight limit. Generally, it’s about 5 years old before you would put them in a booster seat. We also want to keep children in the backseat where there is not an air bag that’s going to come out and potentially harm them, so the general rule is that their 13th birthday is when they get to go to the front seat.

TBPM: Does Safe Kids provide free car seats to those in need? MS: We provide car seats through car seat classes that we teach at Children’s Board Family Resource Centers. They get the education piece on how to install a variety of car seats and then we provide them with a convertible car seat. Also, they go out to their vehicles and practice putting it in. We have a car seat technician that’s there just to make sure it’s all installed correctly. Technicians take an intense 40-hour course, and we have to renew our skills and take so many other continuing education units every two years.
