YIYUNSHANGSHE HOSTEL ,Daijiashan

LOCATION The project is located in Daijiashan, Dongshan Township, Eshan, Tonglu County, Hangzhou City,Zhejiang Province. It is located in the hilly area in the middle and south of Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province. It is 9.5 kilometers away from Tonglu downtown.

TOTAL AREA 600 Sq. Meters At present, Daijiashan has become a "cyber celebrity" hostel gathering area in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. For the increasingly competitive of hostel, they try to think beyond the design itself. We use "communication" as the core concept , which includes communication between people and the natural environment, and communication between residents and villagers.

SURROUNDINGS/ACCESS POINTS The red marked area in the figure is the site. The rear of the site there is a access road which connects the front yard of the building. Actually the road is a division between two terrain levels, which is connect the main road of the hill road.

The original house is a soil-damaged house in the 1970s. It consists of a main building with 3 bays and an additional part on the right two bays.

The internal wooden structure beams and columns have a small crosssection, and there is a problem of decay, which has greater structural potential safety hazard. By replacing the original structural system, removed the internal wooden structure and replaced it with a steel structure. And retained the external soil germ wall. The site is complicated because it is built on the mountain. The front is a small platform, and the back has a large height difference, which shows the status of the combination of slope and platform, and there is a hidden danger of landslides.

DESIGN CONCEPT Faced with the complex site and the demands of the owners, how to make full use of every inch of space, and think about the possible behavior patterns of different people living in the hostel, we reorganized the original traffic and functions of the site. Without destroying the original site relationship, we strive to form a complete solution.

BUILDING REQUIREMENTS

SITE ANALYSIS The whole village presents a Y-shaped valley shape. The site is located near the mountain on the west side of the village and has a good view of the landscape. At the same time, such a high point can be seen from the village entrance another locations "Landmark" building. The second phase and the first phase are separated by water. And there is a large height difference in the vertical direction.

DIRECTION OF TRAFFIC & SAFETY MEASURE DUE TO LANDSLIDE Due to the limitation of the original building's depth direction, By moving the traffic aisles that should have appeared inside the building outwards, combined with the terrace on the back to form different levels of traffic space, and formed vertical communication and echo in the vertical direction. At the same time, the reconstructed platform effectively solved the hidden danger of the original site landslide.

CASE STUDY

In order to further enrich the public activity area of the entire project and increase the number of guest rooms, the capacity of the original building must be expanded. By adding to the original building form, the third-story space is implanted as the public area of the hostel. This public area occupies the best view of the landscape. At the same time, it is connected with the largest site on the back in the vertical elevation. Through the connection of the elevated corridor, it expands the external activity space of the public area and turn the originally negative mountain back into an active venue. The first and second floor spaces were converted into guest rooms on the premise of not making major changes to the original adobe wall. Due to the transfer of the main event venue, the original front platform on the ground floor becomes the exclusive courtyard space for the guest rooms on this floor.

HOW HEIGHT IS MANAGED WITH THE SITE The height of the site on the back of the building is relatively flat, and it is organized into two platform relations in accordance with the current situation we arrange the swimming pool on the platform on the lower level, and resolve the height difference by overlapping water. At the same time, the flat layout of the swimming pool presents a certain angle with the building, facing the valley direction, bringing the visual experience of the infinity pool; the open space on the upper floor is used as an outdoor activity camp, providing ample outdoor activity space for guests of families or groups.

RELATION WITH THE NATURE As the most private part of the homestay, by making full use of the value of each guest room through reasonable function organization, the first floor is set as a guest room with a private courtyard; the second floor expansion room is set as a suite; the original auxiliary room Remodeled into a LOFT family room. This brings different holiday groups to meet their individual needs.

HOW FINAL FORM IS ACHIEVED BY ARRANGING ROOFS In the final architectural form, the relationship between the original part and the new part is formed. The roof of the new part is placed vertically on the roof of the old building, and the "gable side" is covered with glass to obtain the best landscape resources. The shape dissipated in this form also avoids the problem of excessive roof mass. The undulating roof brings an interesting interior space experience to the three-story public space. In addition to retaining the adobe wall to pay tribute to the original traditional building form of the Dai people, By retaining some two-story cornices to effectively protect the adobe wall from rainwater erosion, and also respect the original building's construction practices.

HOW THE BUILDING MADE USER FRIENDLY

Mass Generation

As a public space that hosts the main activities of our guests, by trying to weaken the existence of the building itself. Large-scale floor-to- ceiling windows on the front provide unobstructed views of the outdoors, while the semi-outdoor space on the balcony allows guests to further communicate with the lives of the mountain folk. And the long bar on the back allows people who are indoors to relax to have a direct connection with those who are outdoors. The outdoor terrace of the building connects the swimming pool with the campsite through an elevated gallery, becoming a part of the site.

The Site is allocated at Kurseong is a town and a municipality in Darjeeling district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the Kurseong subdivision.

Located at an altitude of 1,482.55 metres (4,864.0 ft), Kurseong is 32 kilometres (20 mi) from Darjeeling and has a pleasant climate throughout the year.

Kurseong is 34 kilometres (21 miles) from Siliguri and is connected to the city by road and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra and the nearest major railway station is New Jalpaiguri, which is about 45 kilometres (28 miles) from the town. The economy is based primarily on education and tourism.

 The site is located at the highest part of Kurseong Hill Region. The site located approximately 1800 meters from the sea level.  Kurseong hill subdivision of the Darjeeling district, West Bengal, is associated with complex geomorphic set-up stemmed from form–process interaction on varied slope, relief, elevation, aspects, ridge–valley orientation, density and frequency of drainage, dissection, ruggedness and topographic wetness over different stratigraphy of geological rocks having different hardness.  Some measures for rational land utilization and management have also been proposed for optimal land use planning for the study area.

CLIMATE  Solar Azimuth 155.98 degree and site Altitude 63.30 degree & Daytime length approx. 12 hours.  The climate varies from tropical to subtropical to temperate with rise in elevation.  The highest temperature of about 36 degree C occurs in the month of May to June in the plain whereas the lowest of 20 degree C occurs in the month of December and January in upper hills.  The distribution of rainfall in different month throughout the year gives a clear-cut picture that the rain fall increases with the increase in altitude.  Average annual Rainfall is 3092 mm and Average number of Rainy days is 126 days in a year.

FLORAS Moreover, these hilly slopes are home to many medicinal plants such as Aconitum ferox , Adhatoda vasica , Artemisia vulgaris, Berginia ciliata , Hedychium spicatum, Sapindus mukorossi, Taxus baccata, Zingiber cassumunar etc.

Sadly, deforestation due to rapid urbanization is now eating away the green cover. However, it must be said that government is doing its level best to preserve the flora of the Darjeeling hills.

FAUNAS Darjeeling is also the home to varied types of birds such as woodpeckers, orioles, sunbirds, flycatchers, finches etc. During the migrating season, one can also witness a varied numbers of migratory birds making their way to and from the plains. Other than birds, one can also find number of small mammals such as civets, mongoose and badgers in this part of the hills.

VEGETATION  Khair - Sissu Forest This is a second seral stage of vegetation succession and is found mostly in pure patches.  Simal – Siris Forest This well-known forest is found in places where soil formation has progressed a little.  Toon – Haldu Forest Away from the river bank, where the composition of the forest changes to one having more economically valuable species, one can find this type of forest.  Plain Sal Forest Beyond the well-drained deep loamy soil, Sal (Shorea robusta) trees occur in abundance.  Dry Mixed Forest This type of forest is a subsidiary edaphic type belonging to Northern Tropical Moist Deciduous forest. Wet Mixed Forest This Eastern SubHimalayan wet mixed forest is of secondary seral type.  Certain local condition including bad drainage makes some areas too moist for Sal and here the composition of flora tends to be an evergreen type.

LOCAL MATERIAL & CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES Construction technique

Kath-kuni & koti banal

 Walnut and Pipli are found in the upper areas.  The most common undergrowth of Kurseong subdivision are the lichens and ferns.  Most part of the foothills of the Himalayas or the Terai region is occupied by the 'Sal' tree.  Sal trees are very tall and sometimes reach a height of 30 meters.  Evergreen trees pine is majorly found and chestnut, maple, barch are available.  At the time of april -may orchids are seen and in october Marigolds are ploughed.

TRAFFIC MOVEMENT ANALYSIS  Traffic movement is heavy near mirik and semi-heavy near Sumiran Nursery and viewpoint & rest of the area is moderate to low traffic at rishi road 5.86 kms from site at south-west.  Traffic movement is heavy near kurseong market & rest of the area is moderate to low traffic at hill cart road 5.40 kms from site at north east.  Mainly huge traffic in both the roads during 8:00am-12:00 pm and after 9pm at night.

CULTURE  One of the major attractions of Darjeeling and Kurseong are the plethora of local ethnic foods.

Due to the distinct origins and culture of the people you will find authentic local food of various ethnic groups like Tibetans, Nepali, Bengali, etc.  Momos are actually dumplings made with flour and stiffed with either meat or vegetables and are either steamed or fried and are served with clear soup.  With the onset of New Year, in the month of January as the district of Darjeeling experiences festivity in each month as a result of the cultural blend of various religions, tribes and immigrants, people of Kurseong also jumps into the bandwagon to celebrate the festivals.  The culture of Kurseong is an amalgamation of landscape, architecture history, local traditions, and colorful festivals.  The people of Kurseong observe various festivals due to the existence of a diversified population.

Being located in one of the hills of Darjeeling, Kurseong and its people celebrate many local festivals including the main festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Buddha Jayanti, Christmas, Holi, and Ram Navami.

SITE ANALYSIS

EXISTING BUILDING STYLES SURROUNDING THE SITE  Safety against natural hazards is the most serious concern for planning and design of buildings in hill regions.  Many vernacular practices like dhajji wall, kath-kuni, koti-banal, taaq and wooden buildings have good response during previous earthquakes.  Buildings should be compact, having small foot print and most of the openings/windows should be provided along the length of building (longer side) and shorter side of building (width) should be kept intact without openings to have better seismic response.  Traditional settlements in this region are developed with nature as these settlements merge nicely with natural contextual settings and cause minimum disturbance to natural environment.  Natural materials like stone, bamboo, tree branches obtained from pruning of trees, thatch, pine leaves etc. are used for slope stabilization and protection in traditional hill settlements.

EXTRODIUM The main aim of the project to set up a Youth Hostel in Kurseong, Darjeeling district; to enhance a different essence towards the guests like travellers/backpackers/dwellers from their daily busy life in a place surrounded by calm nature, beautiful mountains, forests, tea estates etc. In the scenario of covid-19 inferences drew from the examples of cases regarding crowding, social distancing , sanitizing are effectively applied to the design, so that the design also be a covid-19 precaution design as well.

Kurseong the land of White Orchid, is a small settlement At Darjeeling Subdivision, hence it is the place where two types of structural roofing are seen, so the proposed design is designed with the combination of pitched at flat roof, the interconnected community concept have tried to flourish out to design the hostel so that the hostel is fully interconnected to enhance beauty of team making community system & communicative stair cases and shopping plazas are incorporate through out the site to give a special exposure as a community area.
