Meals on Wheels Needs You

The construction will soon begin on the renovation at Oak Grove. In just a few short months we will have new handicap accessible restrooms, a new kitchen with new appliances, a new circle drive and a portico to allow us to drop off someone and allow them into the church protected from the elements of the weather, along with a new ceiling and lighting in the fellowship hall. First let me say thank you to all who have worked and donated to make this possible, I will be excited to see the finished project. Yet foremost let us say “thank you” to God.

The Walkertown area has depended on Oak Grove for years to help provide Meals On Wheels. Our volunteers have become few and there is a tremendous need for Oak Grove to do its part. Please consider giving a portion of your time to this ministry. See Bonnie Peddycord for more information.

This project is just a part of the things that we have been blessed with at Oak Grove. Over the last year the Lord has blessed many of us with healing from sickness and surgeries, we have seen good growth, a sweet spirit dwells within our congregation. The Holy Spirit has come upon us with blessings and it is important that we recognize that and give to God the great praise for the many things that He has done. I encourage you to take a look at your own life, and think of the things that the Lord has done in your life this past year. Think back to the start of school and how quickly it passed, the joys and even some of the trials that you may have faced but that now seem like distant memories. Can you see God’s hand at work and count the things that He has done? For most of us the answer is absolutely! June is here and school will soon be over and families will take a much needed vacation. The job will wait; there is excitement in looking forward to some time away. It’s great to break the daily routine but let’s not get out of our routine of prayer and devotion to God. He is worthy and we are stronger when we have His presence in our lives. Be safe, enjoy your time away and come back with more blessings to share about the joy and rest and peace that you received. God wants that for you, but He wants us to remember where it came from! Gods Blessings!

A WORD FROM OUR CHOIR DIRECTOR + PIANIST ABOUT YOUTH SUNDAY

The YOUTH SUNDAY on May 22nd was wonderful and so encouraging! Allow me to congratulate each of our young people on a job well done! It is inspiring to see so many of our youth participating and helping secure the future of our church. Each talent is a gift from God and it is a privilege to exercise that talent at church. I hope our youth realizes that when they share their talents and gifts with others it is a true blessing. Thanks to the adults who helped with the planning and preparation for that service. Again, thanks to our young people and I hope we will have many more occasions for their participation in future services. Sincerely, Robin Sell Hancock

Newsletter Notes From around the Southern Province

Drive on Business 40 between Kernersville and Winston-Salem, and you can see that the eastern leg of the Northern Beltway is fast becoming a reality. “This is an issue we will have to address in the near future,” Oak Grove’s Trustees warned in 2006. Well that “near future” is now. That’s because the beltway will cross church land on the southwest and in effect will become the church’s next-door neighbor. Oak Grove reports, “The state will purchase our parsonage along with about 12 acres of church land sometime in the near future.” All that hasn’t put a damper on Oak Grove’s own plans. Groundbreaking will take place mid-June for the new kitchen along with renovated bathrooms and fellowship hall. The goal is to have Oak Grove’s 129th anniversary lunch in the new facility. After all, since September 25, 1887, when Br. Christian Lewis Rights organized the church with 14 members, Oak Grove has seen a lot of neighbors come. And go. Thanks to generous anonymous donors, Clemmons will soon have six stained glass windows in its sanctuary. Salem Stained Glass, Inc., is making the windows, which will depict the life of Christ on earth. A seventh window, featuring the Holy Bible, will be installed in the vestibule. New Philadelphia has a new logo for u se w ith its br ochur es, signs, Internet, etc. It’s the Lamb seal without the surrounding motto. Looks very familiar, friendly, and cheerful. Thumbs up! New Philadelphia also reminds us that when we bring neighbors or friends to church with us, to invite them to the hospitality coffee after the first service. And when we introduce ourselves to newcomers in the pews, invite them to coffee as well. After all, we are the “growth engine” of our church as we reflect Christ in all we say and do.

CRISIS CONTROL MINISTRY DONATION Canned Meats (Packed in water-Tuna or Salmon)

The joke is that when meeting someone wearing similar clothing you say, “Glad you got the office memo.” At First Greensboro the ushers on occasion get their “memo” through the church newsletter. This time the shirt colors are May 15 white, May 22 black, May 29 red, white, and blue (Memorial Day weekend), June 5 Hawaiian or tropical (in memory of Stuart and Cindy Good). The congregation is welcome to join the color scheme each Sunday. Richard W. Starbuck
