Newsletter Notes

It was a great time at Bible School a few weeks ago, our young people enjoyed themselves and learned a lot. Our theme this year was Jesus Our Superhero. We see a lot of superheroes this day, nearly every month there is another superhero movie at the theaters. There’s Superman, Batman, Captain America, the Black Widow, and don’t forget the Ninja Turtles and many more. Superheroes abound. It was a little different when I was that age; I believe that there were more cowboys than superheroes. Still we had the constant battle between good and evil. It was a lot easier to tell who was who back then. The good guys seemed to always wear a white hat and they won the heart of the beautiful young lady in the end. It seemed to be a different story but the same ending; the guy with the black hat and the dark mustache got beat in the end. We live in a world where the distinction between good and evil is not as clear anymore. We have forgotten the Lord’s word in the book of Isaiah chapter 55 “Woe to you who call good evil and evil good.” We tend to be viewed as judgmental and elitist if we take a firm stand for what we believe to be right. The good news for us is that God has not changed his mind about what he calls good and what he wants his children to do and what they should avoid. We need not worry about getting it wrong, the Holy Spirit still speaks and guides those who seek the Lord. There is no better source of the will of God than the Holy Bible. If your conscience says this might not be right and it does not match the word of God then we would do well to avoid the things that we question. The world may tell you that it is fine, that to each his own, but we will not stand before the world in judgment at the end of our lives. We will stand before a righteous God. Satan would like you to believe that everything is all right and no one is harmed. God calls us to avoid the things he has forbidden because he understands that they will ultimately bring harm and hurt to us. It will always be best to trust the Lord.

Peace be to you, Pastor David

Come and Worship, our “coffeehouse church,” has a new home: Fairview’s activity building. That helpful arrangement is temporary, though, while it looks for a more permanent place to gather. Come and Worship has met in several locations in Winston-Salem for a number of years. Its most recent was Liberty Arts Center on Liberty Street. Oak Grove held gr oundbr eaking for its new kitch en and updated bathrooms on July 10. It is the first major construction since the sanctuary was completed in 1957. New Philadelphia’s Women’s Fellowship is trying something new November 6, a Christmas Décor White Elephant Sale. Members are asked for donations of new or gently used fall and Christmas decorations. It will be a “great way to de-clutter while helping Women’s Fellowship support some great causes.” Friendly note from First Greensboro: “Are you aware there is a Moravian Archives in W inston -Salem? In addition to research materials, the Archives has a vault that is about the size of our sanctuary where materials are maintained. Some of the things that we as a congregation have to supply throughout the year or at the end of the year are:” And First lists minutes of Congregation Council, Boards, and Committees; memoirs and membership lists (directories); church budget and year-end financial reports; and annual reports of church organizations. The purpose of all that is to give your church a history in the future. For example, when Oak Grove wanted to know about its beginning, we could look up founding minister Christian Lewis Rights’s account of it on September 25, 1887, in the Kernersville Diary.

Resolution To dissolve the Moravian Widows’ Society of the Southern Province of the Moravian Church in America, Inc., and replace with “The Survivor's Society of the Southern Province of the Moravian Church in America, Inc.” The Moravian Widows’ Society of the Southern Province of the Moravian Church in America, Inc. (herein after call The Society) was put into place in 1919, and chartered as a non – profit corporation in the State of North Carolina by the Attorney General, and; Legally married male members of a qualified Moravian Church, under the age of 61, could join The Society by making a one time, non – refundable deposit, or could become a member if their wife was a member of a qualified Moravian Church, and; The intent of The Society was to provide income to member’s widows after the death of her husband, (unless she remarried,) and; The Society has provided income to many sisters over a period of some 97 years, and; As times have changed, husbands , and their families, have become more dependent on the income of their wives, and, after the death of their spouse , may encounter financial difficulties; We, Therefore, a Quorum of the present members of THE SOCIETY, at the Annual Meeting, September 22, 2016, do hereby and hereon offer the following > continued next page >

Report from Johnny on the highway bypass is on hold. We are waiting on the State DOT. David touched on the call process with the PEC. Oak Grove was recognized on how well we are doing.

Board of Elders Meeting Held 7-12-16 The drive to help replenish Bethabara Food Pantry was a great success. Mt Pleasant United Methodist will be closing. There are a few others that are experiencing hardships and fewer members. We need to encourage these folks and invite them to Oak Grove Moravian Church and offer them support.

Resolution That THE SOCIETY be dissolved, and in its place a nonprofit corporation “The Survivor's Society of the Southern Province of the Moravian Church in America, Inc.”

I appreciate the support each of you gave the Ground Breaking on July 10th. It was nice to have a large crowd as well and Mr. Bell from the PEC and Bishop Rights. Thanks to David Berrier for making that event memorable. I remember the previous construction in 1956 & 1957. Our forefathers had the vision to provide a place for us to worship. I am sure that the children who participated in the ground breaking will remember the event for years to come. After all, they are a big part of why we are doing this project. Since our last meeting tow major things have occurred. The construction has begun and the Women’s Fellowship has contributed $60,000 to the effort. The “heavy” demolition should be complete by now. Since the beginning of this project, we have agreed that we would only build if we had money in the bank to cover the cost. Accordingly, we began construction/renovation of the kitchen, fellowship hall and bathrooms. The portico/drive-thru has been delayed until funds are available. Committee members were given a Sources/Uses worksheet. The cash on hand numbers on it are exact. The cost numbers are not exact, however, they are very close. If we were to do the entire project (kitchen, restrooms, fellowship hall and drive-thru) we would currently be $27,833 short of funds. Delaying the drive-thru only results in a higher cost in the future. My recommendation is that we take a small step of faith and go forward with the entire project.

herein after called “The Survivor’s Society,” be put into place, and; That a married couple (of which at least one is a member) of a Moravian Church and who are legally married may BOTH become members, provided they have not attained the age of 61. If one has not reached 61, but the other has, then the one under 61 may join. (Common law marriages are not recognized in North Carolina) and; That if both wish to become members, then each will pay the membership fee which is current at the date of the application, and attest to being in good health, and; That after having received satisfactory proof of death of a member, the surviving spouse will receive benefits until death, or remarriage, and; That the partner of all present members of The Society will automatically become members of the Survivor’s Society. On October 1, 2016, the new policies will be in place, and; That the funds of The Society, now under management by the Moravian Ministries Foundation, be utilized to fund the “Surviving Spouse Society” and; That a committee be appointed to write a Constitution, By-Laws, and Incorporation papers for the Survivor’s Society. These papers shall then be submitted to the office of the North Carolina Attorney General for approval and recording. If the above is APPROVED at the September meeting, then: 1- The spouse of the present members will automatically become members of the “New” Society, the at the “First death” the surviving spouse will receive two checks per year until death, or remarriage, and; 2 – Those members of the present society whose spouse has died may (at their option) begin receiving benefits in 2017 until death, or remarriage occurs. Many other items regarding the “New” society will be discussed at the September 22 meeting, THEREFORE, we can’t urge you enough to attend. For additional information, and to JOIN the present Widow’s Society, please contact Rev. Dr. Bill Campbell at 336 403 3209.
