Artist Beth Schmohr Story

“It’s never just about a color, but a fusion and a blend, a beginning and an ending, a piece of work that captures a feeling, an emotion. I love that!” Originally from Denver, CO, Beth Schmohr has studied at the University of Denver, University of Alaska, Anchorage and currently attends Santa Barbara City College Adult Education classes. Growing up, her family was very musical; however, her first experience with music was painting on her father’s guitar when she was three. She credits her inspirations in part to having lived in many places in the United States and several foreign countries. She feels blessed to have the opportunity to currently reside with her husband in southern California. Along with her pieces of acrylic and oil on canvas, she does works in painted glassware and beaded jewelry. Her latest pieces have been inspired by the many feelings that make us who we are.

Beth is a member of the Abstract Art Collective, committee member of the Carpinteria Valley Arts Council and current Vice-President of the Santa Barbara Art Association. Contact Beth at (805) 223-5411 or

Art Changes The World

Shop, Play, Dine, Stay

You have probably noticed the new brightly colored “Shop, Play, Dine, Stay” banners displayed on the light posts in the Downtown area. This idea for the banners was brought forth by Karen and Alan Clark from Whimsy Antiques. Since the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce is all about supporting local businesses, it seemed fitting to incorporate the theme “Shop, Play, Dine, Stay” into our Business Directory/Destination Guide. The banners were arranged through the City’s Parking and 6

Business Improvement Area Advisory Board (PBIAAB) and designed and printed by Carpinteria’s local The Flag Factor y-Main Street Banner. Businesses and organizations throughout Carpinteria were invited to sponsor a banner, with their name proudly displayed on the banner. Banners will be displayed for several months throughout the year. If you are interested in sponsoring a banner, please contact the City at (805) 684-5405. And, remember… to Shop, Play, Dine and Stay local! 2013 - 2014 Carpinteria Valley

An invitation to P L A Y

You’re invited to spend a day or longer in Carpinteria, one of the few classic beach towns in California. Hop on the Seaside Shuttle, a great way to check out the town. Carpinteria boasts the ‘World’s Safest Beach,’ so basking in the sun and swimming are a must. If you want to learn kayaking and surfing, call the Carpinteria Boathouse at 684-7613, or email oceanrec@ yahoo.com. Check out the stand-up paddleboarding opportunities at Upright Sports. Just a block from the beach visit the Tomol Interpretative Play Area and Trail on Linden Ave (see page 9), where children can learn and play at the same time. If you enjoy walking, take the trail through the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park or sign up with “Take a Hike,” for a professional hiking guide (page 9). A visit to the Carpinteria Museum of History (on Maple Ave) may inspire you to linger and explore Carpinteria further. And there’s always Curious Cup Bookstore (on Linden Ave), a shop created for children, teens and adults. Stop by the Curtis Studio of Dance (on 9th St) or Studio B Dance (on Carpinteria Ave), to watch or sign up for classes, or go over to Robitaille’s Fine Candies (on Linden Ave), a ‘don’t miss sweet treat.’ Take your appetite to Crushcakes & Café (on Carpinteria Ave), and after lunch check out Rori’s Artisanal Creamery, for ice cream with an attitude (on Carpinteria Ave). Hardware (in Casitas Plaza) offer great deals on beach and camping equipment. And when the hunger hits, try IHOP or Taco Grande in the same shopping center. The ‘Harbor Seal Preserve Rookery,’ (off Bailard Ave) is busy between December and May, when seal pups and their parents rest on the warm sand below. Stop for an All-American Surf Dog at the cart near the rookery! The Carpinteria Community Pool (corner of Carpinteria and Palm Aves), features open swim hours. Reserve a City public tennis court, by calling (805) 566-2417 or improve your game with Bjork Tennis (page 13). Carpinteria has several public parks created for picnics, walking, hiking, rock climbing, or relaxing (page 81). Stop by Ark Pet and Supply (in Casitas Plaza) or Lemos Pet Supply (on Carpinteria Ave) and buy your pet-buddy a treat. Before the end of the day, visit our local nurseries, gardens, floral and garden designers (pages 45 & 51). Visit plazatheatercarpinteria.com for the entertainment schedule at the Plaza Playhouse Theater on Carpinteria Ave. Remember the Santa Barbara Zoo is just up Highway 101. Go by train (Amtrak Pacific Surfliner) or car for a special outing.

Curious Cup Bookstore

And so much more! Stop by 929 Linden Ave for a wide selection of books, journals, greeting cards, novelty gifts for kids of all ages, children’s books, local travel books, hiking maps and college prep materials for students. Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce (CVCC) holds its membership, board of directors, ambassadors and staff to high ethical and business standards, which were set more than 100 years ago in 1912, when the CVCC was chartered. Our Mission: *The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce is an organization of businesses united to create a strong local economy and a positive quality of life by representing business to government, promoting the community, providing networking opportunities and supporting a sustainable future for business and economic development. What does that mean for our membership? The CVCC is committed to member businesses in our local community and those with memberships along the south coast. This commitment extends well beyond the usual services offered by most chambers, for these reasons: *Via the CVCC’s Governmental Relations Director, a strong leadership role at the CVCC continually maintains a consistent voice to influence local, countywide, state and federal legislative policy makers to support local business growth. In addition, with a membership in the Chambers of Commerce Alliance (CCA), the CVCC increases its influence regionally, throughout Santa Barbara and

Ventura Counties. Keep up to date by reading “Frankly Speaking” each month in the CVCC printed Newsletter and also available at carpinteriachamber.org. *CVCC’s members have opportunities to build new clientele through participation in: Business-toBusiness Program, Business @ Breakfast (networking), placing promotional articles, ads and inserts in the CVCC Monthly printed Newsletter, attending Business-After-Hour-Mixers, presenting at the FREE monthly Lunch & Learn, plus joining the CVCC’s volunteer Ambassadors and placing banner ads on the CVCC website, and in the Chamber Business Directory/Destination Guide. *In addition, savvy CVCC members found that sponsorships have increased their brand awareness during the Annual Golf Tournament, the State of the Community Breakfast, the Annual Community Awards Banquet, the Business @ Breakfast networking event and the Business-After-Hours Mixers each month. The Chamber’s social media outreach adds member benefit. *Finally, twice a month the CVCC reminds members about important community events, training opportunities and business related issues in the emailed “Fast Facts News,” which is sent to members and constituents, year-round and is available at carpinteriachamber.org

Clean & Green

Carpinteria is a classic beach town that is ‘clean and green.’ The healthy atmosphere is the pride of our local businesses and residents. In the past four years the City of Carpinteria has introduced three new ordinances, which were passed into law, to restrict the use of styro-foam take-out food containers, single use plastic bags and the smoking of tobacco products in public places. The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce worked with the local businesses and the City to host workshops to assist businesses to fully understand the impacts and timing of the upcoming ordinances. Ultimately, these changes provide clean air clean beaches, clean streets and a healthy environment for marine life as well as a welcome place to visit and live. Want to know more? Small & Large Businesses Honored

Again this year, the CVCC guided by a committee of Carpinteria’s leaders in business, education and the community-at-large, selected two local businesses to be lauded as the “Small & Large Businesses of the Year.” They were acknowledged in January 2013 at the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 55th Annual Community Awards Banquet, by over 275 community attendees at the beautifully decorated Boys & Girls Club of Carpinteria. Small Business: This award was given to the Curious Cup Bookstore (on Linden Ave), owned and operated by Kiona Gross, a hands-on person, with a caring and tender touch. Against all odds, Gross opened her independent local bookstore (with so much more than books) and the community immediately embraced her selection of materials, “can do” spirit and collection of titles…Curious Cup Bookstore became wildly successful in just two years. Gross donates hours of her time and talent to various community organizations, and in many cases serves on their boards. She supports the arts and has become an icon at Girls Inc., where she works extensively with elementary age children, and helps raise funds for scholarships to support tuition costs for low-income youth. In addition to leading a new chapter of Junior Achievement high school students, she

is an active member of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning, sits on the Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Board (PBIAAB) and Carpinteria First Committee. Kiona and her store have made Carpinteria an even more special town. Large Business: lynda.com was honored as the Large Business of the Year. Cofounders Lynda Weinman and her husband Bruce Heavin created lynda.com in 1995 as a registration hub for the classes they were teaching at their web design and software-skills school in Ojai. In 2002, the business evolved into a subscription-based online library of training videos. The company relocated to Carpinteria in 2009 and now has 400 employees worldwide. Today, from its 12-acre, state-of-the-art campus, lynda.com offers thousands of high-quality, expert-taught video courses in software, creative, and business skills. It provides training to more than 3 million people from individuals to corporate, academic, and government accounts. lynda.com is dedicated to supporting local nonprofits, including the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, UCSB Arts & Lectures, the Boys & Girls Club, SB Arts Commission, among others.

Funded by a collaborative of local foundations and non-profit organizations, THRIVE works to close the readiness and achievement gap by ensuring all children living in the Carpinteria Unified School Chamber of Commerce Directory

District have the support they need to succeed. Signature programs through THRIVE include Parent University, a Children’s Health and Wellness Center, Early Childhood Education Services, a Family Resource Center, and very comprehensive and targeted K-12 intervention programs that address the pathway results. The 27th Annual California Avocado Festival

This year marks the 27th Annual California Avocado Festival! Since 1986, Avofest continues to be a community event supported by volunteers, donors and corporate sponsors. This Avofest will be held October 4, 5, and 6. Avofest provides a fundraising vehicle for over 25 non-profits and community service organizations, many of whom rely on Avofest to yield a significant portion of their annual income. Additionally, with the participation of the California Avocado

Commission, visitors become well educated in the history of avocados in California. With 85,000 to 100,000 festival visitors, Avofest has become the most environmentally friendly festival in the country, boasting a 100% landfill diversion (0 waste) for all trash and food waste created by festival visitors. Avofest is continually developing creative, fresh and smart programs to better support local organizations and businesses year round.

Each year locals and visitors alike eagerly anticipate the arrival of the first full weekend in October. We invite you, your family & friends to experience Avofest; eat your way through the delicious food venue, enjoy music & entertainment, visit our kid’s block party, browse the arts & crafts district, learn something at the Avo Expo Tent, and witness the world’s largest vat of guacamole. We promise a weekend of unforgettable offerings and memories to last a lifetime.

It’s a buyer’s market. It’s a seller’s market. The truth is, it is your market. You as the seller or buyer are really in control. The availability of homes, the availability of money to buy the home, the price the seller is asking and the willingness of buyers - all of these factors play into what the market is at any time in real estate. What you control as the seller or the buyer makes all the difference. An overpriced property will always languish on the market. A well-priced property will draw competitive buyers. It is as simple as that. No matter the location, condition of the property or the availability of financing, if it is priced properly, it will sell. Buyers can greatly increase their chances of buying a home by offering the best price and terms to the sellers. It is all about being the most attractive buyer no matter what kind of market it is. If you are ready, willing and able as either a seller or a buyer, then you will control the outcome regardless of the market conditions. It is all just a matter of playing the game. So if you want to sell or buy, go play!

Venoco, Inc. is an energy company founded in Carpinteria in 1992. We safely drill for oil and natural gas in the Santa Barbara Channel—and other onshore locations in California—and transport it through pipelines to California refineries. Our operations have won numerous awards from regulators for safety excellence and superior maintenance practices. Oil and natural gas are community resources that generate income. As long as production continues, royalties and taxes are paid. Royalties, in addition to income and property taxes, help pay for education, transportation and other local programs supported with government funds.
