2010 - 2011 Carpinteria Valley

Greetings from the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce . . . its membership, leadership and staff. I’m glad you took the time to pick up a yearly “Destination Guide & Business Directory.” Please don’t put this publication down, until you have read about our great town. Carpinteria is a charming coastal community with a big town heart… located just south of Santa Barbara, and north of Ventura. We boast the “world’s safest beaches,” and a surfer’s paradise close-by . . . an array of excellent restaurants, quaint shops, hotels, motels, extended stay options, nature trails, plus memory book sunrises and sunsets. Hi-tech, state-of-the-art companies to locally owned stores, and a strong local cadre of growers, feature a vast selection of beautiful fresh flowers, year-round. Residents savor back yard

barbeques, the Thursday Farmer’s Market, local school sporting events, a cup of coffee or a cold beer and neighborly conversations. We may drive a car on Highway 101, but usually ride our beach cruisers or take the electric Seaside Shuttle around town. Visitors stay at the local State Beach Park, where they relive old memories and create new ones. Our “downtown” is easily accessible by Amtrak (the platform is only 50 feet from the heart of town), with many Pacific Surfliner stops daily – a 15-minute train-ride down from Santa Barbara or 20 minutes up the coast from Ventura. What a town and what a great group of people! If you are visiting, enjoy your stay. If you live here . . . be thankful every day. Sincerely, Paul D. Wright, Chairman of the Board

All Along the Beach

By Matt Roberts, Director of Carpinteria Parks & Recreation A fascinating feature of the Carpinteria shoreline is its environmental diversity. From coastal bluffs, rookeries, tidepools, an off shore reef, a lagoon, and even a salt marsh, the Carpinteria coastline provides a habitat for a fascinating array of marine creatures. Carpinteria is a bird watcher’s paradise. Shorebirds, migratory birds, riparian birds, and upland birds all are present, and with the Santa Barbara Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary as the backdrop, beach walkers frequently see harbor seals, bottle nose dolphin and grey whales just off shore. The tide pools in the Carpinteria State Beach are home to crabs, sea stars and anemones. The Carpinteria State Beach offers perfect

sites to camp out and enjoy. Many of the campsites are on the beach where the sounds of surf and shore birds are a delight. Winter-time sunsets are spectacular. The State Beach features all the amenities of a wilderness campground, but the convenience and comfort of being next to the retail areas of Linden Avenue shops. Campers enjoy restaurants, markets, a movie theatre and other stores. Beach access in Carpinteria is excellent. Lots of parking, much of it free, can be found in the fall, winter or spring. You can also access the coast from the 53 acre Bluffs Nature Preserve at Bailard Avenue. It’s a longer walk to the sand, but one of incredible beauty.

Coastal View News to celebrate 16 years By Lea Boyd, editor - coastal view news

In October of 2010, Coastal View News will blow out the candles and celebrate 16 years as Carpinteria’s community newspaper. In over 800 issues to hit news stands, the local newspaper has delivered weekly coverage of everything and everyone in Carpinteria. From homecoming queens and City Council elections to births and deaths—Coastal View News documents the highs and lows of life in a small town. Coastal View News was launched after the former local newspaper, The Carpinteria Herald, closed its doors and locals were left hungry for hometown news. A trio of residents decided to fill the void. Publishers Michael VanStry, Gary Dobbins and Rosemarie Fanucchi worked around the clock to put out the first issue of Coastal View News on Oct. 26, 1994.

Since then, residents have come to rely on the publication’s community news. The support of local advertisers has ensured that the newspaper remains free and available every Thursday morning at over 150 locations in Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito, La Conchita and Santa Barbara. In its 16-year lifetime, Coastal View News has expanded its coverage, increased the number of local columnists, launched a dynamic website and updated the newspaper layout, and added sister publications DEEP Magazine and Carpinteria Magazine. One thing, however, has remained constant: Coastal View News is the only place that locals can find exclusively local news.

Carpinteria Schools By Paul Cordeiro, Superintendent Carpinteria Unified School District

The Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) takes pride in its schools. With one comprehensive high school, two small alternative high schools, one middle school, and four elementary schools, CUSD serves approximately 2,500 students in grades K12. District boundaries, beyond Carpinteria proper, reach south to the Ventura County line and north to Summerland. High academic achievement for all students is the District’s main goal. As such, the District implements coherent instructional programs to ensure grade level mastery of the state’s academic content standards in the core subjects. Getting to mastery, in addition to excellent teaching, involves activities and programs that allow students and their families to “connect” to their school in a way that instills confidence and motivation. Go to any CUSD school and you will see students participating in enrichment activities, athletics, the arts, field trips to local destinations and beyond, after-school programs, and community events. Parent education and involvement are also essential to academic success. With the opening of the Main Family Resource Center of Carpinteria, we’ll be augmenting services to parents that, cumulatively, strengthen parents’ ability to help their children succeed in school. Supported by the Hutton, Orfalea and Bower foundations, Main holds promise to redefine schools’ role in the lives of students and their families. For information, contact Michelle Robertson, Executive Director, at (805) 566-1600. Finally, no district can achieve excellence without the support of its community. Notwithstanding the substantial support of numerous private foundations, the district appreciates the support of its own Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) which provides grants to teachers and funds school enrichment programs. To get involved, contact Development Director Patricia Alpert at (805) 722-5909. You can keep track of the district’s activities, events and initiatives by visiting www.cusd.net

CHS Career Path Programs By Marianne McCarthy

A successful high school provides students with as many post-graduation options as possible, whether that means pursuing a degree or immediate employment. Career Path Programs at Carpinteria High School (CHS) give students these options. By exposing students to a variety of programs and career path choices CHS can steer them toward the path for success after they graduate. The Career Path programs at CHS include The Academy of Media Arts (TAMA), Agricultural Science and Technology Academy (ASTA), Construction Technology Academy (CTA), and the Culinary Arts Institute (CAI).

In the last two years, the Carpinteria Education Foundation has raised over $100,000 for these programs, funding the development of a Veterinary Science course, new computers for Virtual Enterprise program, and greenhouse repairs for the Agriculture and Sciences Academy which now grows a commercial crop of poinsettias. This year we are continuing to work towards our goal of developing programs in other career path areas as well as raising capital to match a $430,000 state grant to remodel the high school’s existing home economics kitchen into a professional teaching kitchen.

The Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF),

a nonprofit organization of volunteers formed in 1993, provides financial assistance and support for public schools in the Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD). CEF’S Mission is threefold: 1. To Promote Excellence in Education; 2. To Channel Private Sector Resources to the Carpinteria Unified School District; 3. To Inform and Involve the Community in the Needs of the School District. Since its inception, CEF has distributed close to $500,000 towards the enhancement of educational opportunities for Carpinteria and Summerland students. We need your help to build on our success and make our programs the absolute best for all students. To donate all you need to do is contact CEF at 805-722-5909. By giving to CEF, you are giving to your community. YOU are making your community better for its youth. 2010 - 2011 Carpinteria Valley

The 24th California Avocado Festival

This year the community of Carpinteria will celebrate the 24th Annual California Avocado Festival on October 1st, 2nd and 3rd. From the very first festival in 1986 until today, the festival continues to be a community event supported by volunteers, donors and corporate sponsors. The California Avocado Festival was incorporated as a non-profit public corporation to conduct an annual festival for the promotion of avocados, for the funding of community projects and the

80

development of tourism within the Carpinteria Valley. The festival provides a vehicle for over thirty five non-profit and community service organizations to raise funds for their respective group. Every year Carpinterians eagerly anticipate the arrival of the first f ull we ekend in October which is now commonly referre d to as “Avofest Weekend by the locals. It is the weekend that citizens of our community, local government, community service clubs, businesses

and non-profits tirelessly work to produce California’s largest free festival and host over 85,000 visitors to our precious paradise. Enjoy this family event’s food court, music and entertainment, a kid’s block party, arts and crafts, commercial market place, contests, the avocado expo tent, and the world’s largest vat of guacamole. Plea se join us and experience Carpinteria and the awesome avocado at their very best.

Rods & Roses & Independence Celebration

The 2010 Rods & Roses Premier Car show will take place on Saturday, July 3, 10am, Linden Avenue. The Classic Car Show will feature over 140 pre-1980 American classic cars. Held in Carpinteria (home of many cut-flower growers) this unique event also offers flowers and bouquets for sale to benefit local non-profits. A Friday night Kick-off BBQ (for sponsors and drivers only) will be held at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club, followed by an old-fashioned “cruise through Carpinteria beginning @7pm. Rods & Roses started in 1998 at the Amtrak parking lot with about 20 classic cars, music and a souvenir t-shirt. Today there are over 140 classic cars along Linden Avenue, locally grown flowers and “Mr. Indy 500, Andy Granatelli, as Celebrity Grand Marshal.

Chamber of Commerce Directory

Thanks to Rods and Roses, Carp Cares has been able to partially fund a variety of programs including the START program, which places schoolbased counselors at each site in the district, Bandfest, and other activities. The car show ends at 3:30pm, followed by the Independence Celebration Parade down Linden Avenue at 5pm. Enjoy the day and the excitement of a small coastal community celebrating the Independence Holiday. rodsandroses.com

The Carpinteria Triathlon By Ann Meyer

The Carpinteria Triathlon, a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, is a very exhilarating community athletic experience, The 13th Annual Carpinteria Triathlon is scheduled for September 26th, 2010. Over 800 participants from all over the country are anticipated to take on the challenge of either the Olympic Course (1.5k swim, 40K Bike, 10K Run) or the Sprint Course (.5K Swim, 15K Bike, 5K Run). Over 170 local, dedicated volunteers will help ensure a fun and successful event.

The event’s first challenge is a swim along the Carpinteria Beach. Known as the “World’s Safest Beach,” the ocean waters in Carpinteria are usually calm, with gentle surf and currents. The event’s bicycle route courses through the area foothills known for their picturesque oak groves with mountain and ocean views. Both the Olympic and Sprint courses offer the competitor a challenging ride, although the sprint course is also very well suited for the novice triathlete. Finally, participants run through

Carpinteria on a flat course, motivated by cheering spectators to a finish in the Carpinteria State Beach. Proceeds from the Carpinteria Triathlon help benefit the City’s Parks & Recreation youth programs such as the age group swim team, ocean recreation programming, and Carpinteria’s Junior Lifeguards carpinteriatriathlon.com

Take your eyes off the road.

Traveling around Carpinteria is a joy. From the Santa Barbara Airport or the Amtrak Surfliner (that stops in Carpinteria) to the electric-powered MTD Seaside Shuttle and bus services, Carpinteria is almost ‘Car-Free” thanks to SBCAG’s Traffic Solutions. If you’re new in town, begin with the electric-powered Seaside Shuttle Service, which travels around town, making short stops at local shops, restaurants, hotels and the beach, plus it runs until 9 pm for “First Friday” festivities each month (year-round). Contact sbmtd.gov for the various schedules to take an alternative-fuel powered larger local bus or visit goventura.org for a Vista bus schedule to Santa Barbara and Ventura . . . and check out the entire coastal area, while you’re in town. Reaching Carpinteria from Santa Barbara or Ventura on an Amtrak train, is very convenient. If you fly into and out of LAX, check the schedule for the Santa Barbara Airbus, which stops in Carpinteria. • Vista (805) 438-1112 goventura.org or nextbus.com
