Who Is Mpho Phalatse:

Getting to know the new Joburg mayor

“ Clearly what has happened today is that the ANC has decided to use this as a political ploy.” Tania Campbell is a South African politician who is the newly elected Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. As a member of the Democratic Alliance, she was elected to the role on 22 November 2021. Campbell had previously served as the DA’s caucus in the metro. Campbell has been a Democratic Alliance councillor in the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since 2000. In 2013, she was elected chairwoman of the DA caucus in the metro. She was also the DA’s community safety spokesperson in the metro. In October 2020, she was elected as DA caucus leader after the incumbent, Phillip de Lange, resigned after a motion of no confidence was brought against him.

The DA’s Mpho Phalatse has made history by becoming the first female mayor in the City of Johannesburg. Phalatse won by a resounding margin – bagging 144 votes while the ANC’s Mpho Moerane only managed to receive 121.

RUMOURS MASINA CONGRATULATES CAMPBELL FOR EKURHULENI VICTORY

In a tweet, Masina congratulated Campbell and insisted that the transition will be peaceful. “Congratulations to the newly elected exec. Mayor of the city of ekurhuleni cllr tania campbell. As an outgoing mayor we are committed to a peaceful transition of power. Thank you to and our coalition partners for the opportunity to serve the city these past 5 years. Asbonge,” he said. The DA had to make a U-turn on their election strategy and put Campbell forward for the metro’s top job after initial mayoral candidate Refiloe Nt’sekhe withdrew from her position as councillor.

The DA has swept home major victories in the metro on Monday, securing its first victory after Raymond Dlamini took over the speaker of council position from the ANC’s Patricia Khumalo. Refiloe Nt’sekhe – who was the DA’s candidate for the Mayoral position before absconding from today’s meeting – clarified that she had made the decision to resign from the opposition party earlier this month, but was still standing behind the party with her full support. Speculation has been growing that Nt’sekhe had grown dispondent due to a belief that she was being used by the party to garner black votes. “Clearly what has happened today is that the

ANC has decided to use this as a political ploy. And have not processed the resignation, therefore also using the racial narrative which is actually quite wrong.”

Mpho Phalatse will officially take charge of the sprawling metro, a little over two years after Herman Mashaba quit the post and the DA lost control of Joburg. Earlier this month, it seemed like the ANC would keep hold of the city… but it now looks like they have been blindsided by the work of the EFF and ActionSA. Voting patterns in the election of House Speaker Vasco da Gama – also a DA representative – suggested that the Red Berets and Herman Mashaba’s party had secretly thrown their weight behind the Blues. The DA’s candidate Vasco da Gama was elected speaker. Da Gama, who was in the post between 2016 and 2019, received 147 votes while the ANC’s Eunice Mgcina got 118. The DA makes a comeback in Joburg, thanks to support from the EFF and ActionSA. Phalatse has admitted that she hadn’t anticipated emerging victorious in the election for mayor, particularly given the fact that coalition talks between the DA and ActionSA, Freedom Front Plus, ACDP and UDM didn’t end so well. While this isn’t Phalatse’s first rodeo (she was Joburg’s MMC for Health under Mashaba ), what else is there to know about her? Phalatse is a qualified medical doctor – she studied at the Sefako Makgatho University and MEDUNSA and did her internship at Tembisa Hospital in 2005. She then did community service in Hammanskraal, where she offered services at Jubilee Hospital as well as various clinics within the area. Phalatse is also a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME). She is a single mom of three children (ages five, 11 and 18).
