R60 Million corruption allegations withdrawn

RELIEVE FOR DIAMOND: Former Ekurhuleni councillor, Alderman Neil Diamond.

Civil right organisation AfriForum has confirmed that they have removed the post which claimed that they uncovered corruption of more than R60 million.

The organisation confirmed that they cannot make any findings on the alleged R60 million corruption in Alberton, involving former Ekurhuleni councillor, Alderman Neil Diamond.

In the initial statement which was published on the AfriForum website, the organisation said, “The transaction does not only amount to a waste of tax-payer’s money, but was also to Diamond’s personal benefit because he holds 20 per cent of the relevant company’s shares.”

However, the statement has since being removed by AfriForum.

Speaking to the tame TIMES on Sunday 23 August, AfriForum’s Coordinator on Local Government Affairs said, “We cannot at this stage make any findings on the matter as it is still under investigation, the only people who may be able to shed some light in the matter are the police.”

Although AfriForum had earlier issued a statement claiming that there was an exchange transaction between Diamond and the municipality where the value of the two pieces of land differed more than R60 million, the organisation has since removed the statement from their website.

Mostert maintained, “AfriForum is committed to fighting corruption of any form, we are here to ensure that state funds are not used for corruption.”

Corp Wallace Lever, killed in action on July 20th 1916 East Rand Express – 10 April 1920 On Good Friday evening, Alberton was the scene of a most impressive ceremony.

The occasion was the unveiling of the Roll of Honour at the Mission Hall.

The idea of a perpetual memory to honour those who had made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War, was fuelled by a band of ladies and gentlemen who organised social functions to raise the necessary sum of money throughout the dark period of stress and strain.

Mr Weir said the committee thought it fitting to have a memorial table in Alberton to remind both English and Dutch of those who had taken part in the war. “We feel thankful tonight that the Great War lies behind us. We honour those who have fallen and those who have returned.”

On the tablet were inscribed the names of the seven men from Alberton who died on active service. Thomas Engela, Harold Farren, Raymond Harris, Wallace Lever and G Norton died in France, while Allen Thomas died in German South West Africa. Also the names of more than seventy men who returned from serving in France, East Africa and South West African East Rand Express – 24 April 1920 In aid of the Alberton Foot club Club’s funds, Mr Pieter van der Merwe and Mr Harry Pienaar, Honary Secretary, enthusiastically backed up by Messrs Abe and Petrus Visser, organised a most successful concert that was held in the newly-erected Town Hall on Saturday evening. It may be mentioned that the concert marked the first public function the Town Hall.

Living in two worlds

If one is driven by the will to serve or the desire to do something great, it is almost impossible to imagine what they can accomplish or achieve. I say this because I find myself at that place.

For those who have not added the dots together, not only am I the editor of tame TIMES, I am also the ward councillor for Ward 38, which covers Brackenhurst and Brackendowns… While some believe it could be impossible to do both duties, I have come to realise that while it is incredibly challenging to do both; it takes a lot of self-discipline and a special kind of drive.

As a cricket fanatic, the best way to explain the scenario would be to say that; you need to not only take things ‘a ball at a time’; you also have to adapt your game on the situation.

To give you an idea, as a politician or

human being I have certain beliefs about different situations, however, as an editor, my personal beliefs and political views count for nothing much; if anything for nothing at all.

While it is true that a person cannot separate themselves from what they believe in; my approach is that you are able to adopt a certain approach based on the situation you find yourself in.

Using the cricket analogy, it is like playing either T20, 50-over or Test match – if I am naturally an attacking player, there times in the game where preserving my wicket is more important than trying to clear the boundary with every ball you face.

This scenario is slightly different, as an editor I adopt a more objective approach when I do my work; while I may not as a person fully believe from time to time what the person who holds a different view from mine, I still have a duty to tell their good story.

As I say, living in both worlds can be quite a challenge, but possible if you apply yourself to the work that needs to be done. What I am learning is that if anyone is driven by the will to serve and a desire to achieve greatness; nothing is impossible to achieve… Until next week, have a great week.

Mall at Newmarket Adding plenty of joy on Mandela Day inspires the elderly REACHING OUT: Mall at Newmarket’s Marketing Manager Alexis Muntz reaches out to the elderly.

JOYFUL MOMENT: The staff at Pholosong Hospital appreciated the hotdogs they were given on the day.

A team from News Café, together with Ambella Corporate’s Circle added a little joy when they visited new mothers and staff members looking after them at Pholosong Hospital on Mandela Day, 18 July.

News Café brand manager, Varina Singhsaid, “As a brand we really wanted to give back to the communities we live in. So many South’s African live in poverty and we need to help these communities, participating on a day like Nelson Mandela Day is extremely important to us.”

Pholosong Hospital opened its doors to the community of Tsakane, Ekurhuleni on 02 March 1992. The hospital was elevated from a District Hospital to a Regional Hospital in 2011 and services

approximately one million people in Tsakane, KwaThema, Duduza and surrounding areas.

The staff here are warm and caring and make every effort to ensure their patients are well looked after. The hospital is clean and everyone is jovial, a perfect collaboration for a brand that highlights the importance of atmosphere and vibe.

The News Cafe team visited the hospital offering new mothers and the staff that look after them, hot dogs and refreshments while the Circle of life project members, who had knitted baby booties and clothing for the new born babies handed them out to the new and expectant mums.

In commemorating the International Mandela Day, Alberton’s most recent shopping complex, Mall at Newmarket has taken the time to inspire the elderly.

According to the Marketing Manager Alexis Muntz, the mall will this year live out the words of former South African president, Nelson Mandela when he said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.

“It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

To mark the day, Mall at Newmarket has pampered 102 residents at Alberton Tuiste vir Bejaardes with a celebratory cake and tea session and a relaxing hand treatment and pamper package from SA College of Beauty, Hair & Health in Alberton.

Three arrested Mandela Day for alleged theft clean-up in Alberton

FOR MADIBA: The Parks Department in full swing on Mandela Day in Meyersdal.

Three suspects were arrested for being in a possession of what is suspected to be a stolen motor vehicle With the help of the other crime fighters in the area of Alberton policing area, Alberton SAPS members of specialise units sported a strange motor vehicle.

According to Alberton SAPS

spokesperson, Captain Manare Ramotshela, “Our members stopped them but one of them ran away, they then asked for help from the one of our security companies to assist.”

Three suspects are now behind the bars in Alberton SAPS and will soon be taken to court to face their alleged criminal activities.

Ekurhuleni conducts waste management audit Starting on 24 July, the City of Ekurhuleni will conduct an audit on its waste collection service in Ward 38.

This campaign is coined ‘Siyahlanganisa’, which means ‘to gather information, together with the community’. The audit will see door-to-door surveys at all households and businesses in order to understand the waste service that is currently rendered and to establish if all households and businesses were issued with the new 240lℓ wheelie bin.

The audit will benefit both residents and business as well as the City by providing accurate and updated owner billing information, providing close to 250 job opportunities for the duration of the audience and will help the City improve waste management services rendered.

In addition, it will provide the City with information for future studies and give an overview of the quality of

waste management services provided to communities.

Identification Field workers who will go door-todoor can be identified through their attire which is branded with the City of Ekurhuleni logo and the project name Siyahlanganisa’.

The field workers’ name tags will also include their name, supervisor’s name and number as well as the customer care centre’s contact details (0860 543 000).

Capturing of data in the field is done using smart forms on mobile devices.

The applications used to create the forms and capture the data are called Device Magic. Data collected is verified through spatial, photographic and desktop verification.

The project was initially ran as a pilot project in Ward 94, and will soon include ward 106 and ward 37.

With plenty to do on Mandela Day, the staff from the Parks Department went the extra mile when they cleaned up the island at corner Michelle Avenue and Hennie Alberts Street in Meyersdal. Also on clean up duty was the staff at the Brackenhurst Library who took a break from their usual duties and cleaned up in front of the library. They were assisted by some of the learners from Brackenhurst High School and the ward councillor.

Amanda Black set to thrill at the Drumbeat

Sheldon on patrol Super Rugby Roundup: Lions reign at Hockey World supreme League

With the Lions flying past the Sharks on the weekend, their next challenge is to face the Hurricanes ... the only New Zealand team the Lions failed to beat last season, home and away; while that may be, the team from New Zealand may have a big ask on their hands.

Johan Ackerman’s men, just like they were in the previous season, the team promises to be a real contender this season, once again.

Having said that, they will not forget that the men from Wellington are also the last team to have beaten the Lions at home in Super Rugby, a 5017 win on 30 April 2016. The Canes hammered the Lions that day, but it turned the Lions’ season around as they won their next six games at Ellis Park, including beating the Crusaders and Highlanders in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

They go into this Saturday’s semi-final having not lost a further eight games on home soil this year.

While the Lions endured a narrow victory against the Sharks on the weekend, they will be hoping for a much more improved performance should they have any hopes of advancing to the finals, even

Waterstone College student and young avid hockey player Sheldon Spear was selected to be an official ball patroller at the Hockey World League held in Johannesburg.

For one of the many matches, Spear was a ball patroller for the South Africa vs Egypt game held on Saturday 15 July.

The Hockey World League was hosted at Wits Hockey Astro from Saturday 08 July to Sunday 23 July where some of the best hockey teams in the world competed not only for a space to play in the Hockey World Cup but for vital World Ranking Points.

Horseracing fraternity gives back on Mandela Day

It’s a date which has become synonymous with charity and giving back and the sport of horseracing was one of many organisations who committed themselves to making a difference this Mandela Day. A rallying call was put out on social media as part of the build up towards the day; which coincides with former president and worldwide icon Nelson Mandela’s birthday; and on Tuesday 18 July, several representatives made their way to various horse care units around the country.

The Johannesburg team from Racing. It’s A Rush made their way to the Highveld Horse Care Unit in Meyerton while the staff from Port Elizabeth headed to the East Cape Horse Care Unit. In Cape Town, staff from Kenilworth Racecourse made their way to the Thoroughbred Rehoming and Rescue Centre in Philippi.

While the horseracing industry makes significant contributions throughout the year, Mandela Day was a chance for staff to be a bit more involved in the process as they gave up their 67 minutes.

At the Highveld Horse Care Unit, the Racing. It’s A Rush Johannesburg team painted the stable block used for medical purposes and also got the chance to get up close with equines of all shapes and sizes and spoil them with carrots and apples.

The Highveld Horse Care Unit currently houses 70 animals with a mixture of breeds including donkeys and plays an active role in assisting horses retiring from racing to find new homes and pursue second careers.
