THERE ARE EMPD OFFICIALS IN EKURHULENI WITH CRIMINAL RECORDS RANGING FROM THEFT, CORRUPTION AND MURDER

Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety, Cllr Viviene Chauke has confirmed that there are Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officials in Ekurhuleni with criminal records ranging from theft, corruption and murder.

The MMC confirmed the information by means of written answers to my questions, and further provided a comprehensive list of all the EMPD officials with criminal records; inclusive of names, rank, offence and the departments in which they are stationed.

Member of the Community Safety Oversight Committee, Cllr Wollaston Labuschagne said, “During a previous council term, it came to light that 115 EMPD officials had criminal records.

“The list of names has since decreased, yet the very same officials with past

criminal records still serve in the EMPD. This simply confirms that many of these officials have applied for criminal clearance.”

Cllr Labuschagne stated that among the officers with criminal records, includes an officer serving in the EMPD VIP Unit who was found guilty of murder. It is believed that the official is awaiting sentencing, yet he is still serving in the EMPD. Noting the circumstances, Cllr Labuschagne question how the City of Ekurhuleni could justify keeping a murderer on its payroll.

He said, “It is incredibly disturbing that such a large number of EMPD officials hold criminal records. The residents of Ekurhuleni should have faith in their police officers; how can this be when the police are criminals themselves?”

enormous strides in recent years.

Negotiations are now proceeding between the Council and the postal authorities, whereby Alberton’s phone users will be placed on the same level as users in Germiston and not charged a higher rental and have its own telephone exchange.

The Town Hall is being extensively enlarged. A Council Chamber is being added, also new offices and the whole building will be made longer by about 29 feet. The estimated cost of this is £6 000.

The new Town Hall soon after completion in 1938 Cancer awareness is one of the issues I feel very strongly about, it reminds me of the courage of human beings to overcome any obstacle in their lives.

While the focus of the awareness this month is on breast cancer, I strongly believe we should take the time to honour cancer survivors and acknowledge their bravery. In fact, one of my favourite slogans I have seen in recent years is, ‘Fight Like a Girl’.

Unlike the perception that girls are soft fighters, the slogan makes it clear that women are able to put up strong fight.

Recently, I had the privilege of taking part in raising cancer awareness; it was at a shopping mall where I was approached by a team from Cupcakes for Cancer to help raise awareness, while I did not know any cancer survivor in my life, I gladly asked for the team for a name to ‘adopt’ for that moment.

There are more ways to get involved in the project than simply posing for a photograph after receiving a cupcake; those who love baking could bake and donate cupcakes for the organisation’s National Cupcake Day which was on Saturday 30 September.

With regards to breast cancer, there are a number of ways the community can get involved; these include becoming a volunteer, taking part in the number of events arranged by Cancer South Africa (CANSA) or even working for CANSA. Every little bit of involvement helps, it does not matter how small the contribution may seem, it does go a long way towards raising awareness and fighting cancer.

Let us as a community get together and play a role in promoting more awareness for breast cancer.

With the addition of electricity in 1928 and central water supply in 1930, Alberton attained the status of a village in 1936. In the same year the first official suburb, Florentia, was laid out.

In 1937 the adjacent, but independent townships of New Redruth and Norton’s Small Farms were incorporated into Alberton. To celebrate its progress, the tiny Town Hall built in 1919 was enlarged and dedicated in April 1938.

1936 Germiston assumed a Christmas card appearance last Friday. This was the first heavy snowfall since 1926. It begun about 8am and lasted until well into the afternoon. Millions of snowflakes covered everything in a mantle of white. As a result, little work was done.

Germiston Advocate – 17 June 1938 In the death of Renier Meyer, principal of the Paul Kruger School, Alberton has lost one of its most prominent citizens. The huge gathering at the funeral on Monday afternoon was testimony to the esteem in which he was held by all. More than 1 000 people were present, prominent amongst them being members of his staff and leading figures in educational circles from all over the Reef.

He was born in 1895. In 1926 he joined the staff of the Paul Kruger School and in 1930 became principal. He was not content to limit his activities to school affairs. For seven years he was a member of the local authority.

Crime in Brief

Primrose Police arrested two suspects aged 21 and 29 respectively for armed robbery which happened at corner of Rietfontein and Shamrock Roads during the early hours Sunday 17 September.

According to Primrose SAPS spokesperson, Styles Maome, “Police responded to a complaint on arrival they were shown a victim who alleged that he was walking along the street and he was approached by group of people one was having a sharp object and they threatened him took his watch and cell phone.”

Police and members of another security company drove around and cornered two suspects when they searched one they found the victim. They were arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. Primrose police recovered a vehicle taken during business robbery at Jetpark, Boksburg on Tuesday 19 September.

Maome said, “Police were busy with stop and search at Pretoria road direction East when they notice a vehicle which was stationery with its lights and hazards on.

“The police stopped to inspect because there was no sign of a driver but the car was idling with the keys on its ignition. While still surprised they could hear through the police radio a report about the same car and registration which was taken from a business robbery in Boksburg.”

Role players were summoned to the scene and the vehicle was towed to Van Ryn deep vehicle pound while investigations are taking place.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: Hennie (74) and Connie Scheepers (71) celebrated their anniversary on Sunday 1 October.

Tshepiso Makhalemele Hennie (74) and Connie Scheepers (71) are still madly in love with each other even after 51 years, the couple celebrated their anniversary on Sunday 1 October.

They met in 1966 when Hennie was working in Sasolburg and Connie used to visit her sister there. After three months, in a relationship they got married on 1 October the same year.

A few years later on 19 June 1986, the Scheepers opened a

barber shop called ‘Lili’, which is located in Alberton and they worked there together; while Connie was doing the ladies’ hair, Hennie would groom the men’s hair.

Even after 31 years Hennie is still the hairdresser at “Lili” with the help of one hairdresser and business continues to grow rapidly.

In a generation were marriages only last for two to three years and broken things are thrown away and new ones are bought;

people were never taught to fix anything even relationships.

However, Hennie said, “Only forgiveness, perseverance and love has kept us together. We had a huge 50 years’ anniversary celebration last year, family and friends gathered to celebrate their special day with them.

This year, we will be a major celebration as I have a surprise for my wife.

The past week has been a special one for Hennie as he turned 74 on Thursday 28 September.

Two taverns shut down

CONFISCATED: Crates of the extra alcohol confiscated at the two taverns which were closed down.

Primrose Police closed down two illegal taverns and arrested two suspects and confiscated volumes of Alcohol in their area.

The incident took place at Delport informal settlement where the Police conducted operation on Saturday 16 September.

settlement while on foot patrol they noticed people buying and drinking liquor at the two addresses.”

The officers approached the owners and introduced themselves as Police officials then asked for Liquor licenses and at both addresses there was no liquor licence found.

The suspects were arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. Both suspects appeared at Germiston magistrate court.

Breast cancer is a disease that mostly affects women and it is known to be the second cause of cancer death among women, after lung cancer.

When women’s breast starts growing during puberty, they consist of fat, on the other hand cancer is caused by the body cells multiplying uncontrollably, that excessive cell growth causes cancer. if one has breast cancer they would swell or grow lumps around the collarbone or armpits. According to cancer. org, the swelling may occur even before you grow lumps, so it is important that one sees the doctor, when they recognise these symptoms before it gets worse. Some women may think one of the symptoms of breast cancer includes pain and tenderness of breast but healthline.com states, “There are several causes of pain in breast which include, the fluctuation of hormones caused by menstruation, a bra that doesn’t fit, some birth control pills and large breasts, which

may be accompanied by neck, shoulder or back pain.”

There are other symptoms of breast cancer that one must look out for, they include changes in the shape of the nipple, breast pain that doesn’t go away after your periods. Signs that it may be too late to notice breast cancer, enlargement of one breast (one may notice growth on one of their breasts), an existing lump that gets bigger, vaginal pains, veins visible on the breasts and unintentional weight loss.

The month of October is breast cancer awareness month in South Africa, this is to inform South African women that the diagnosis doesn’t have to be a death sentence if it is detected early enough, Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). In this case, cancer survivors become mentors to those who were just diagnosed with cancer, they usually celebrate cancer by having a fun walk, eat food and have different performances as a of motivation to those who have it.

Simone Jacobs The author of the #1 New York Times bestseller and the book that people couldn’t wait to get their hands on, The Girl on the Train, returned this May with Into the Water, her addictive new novel of psychological suspense.

When I first heard about this book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy to start reading it, probably like everyone else out there and, knowing that Paula Hawkins was going to bring us another best seller.

Thanks to Penguin Random House South Africa I was able to devour this book within days!

The story follows a young girl left motherless when her mother is found in the river that runs through town. Her mother’s sister returns to the town, a town she left behind in her past, promising herself she would never go back, to help figure out what happened to her sister. Regretting not answering the last call she received from her now dead sister, she makes it her mission to figure out the truth about what really happened.

Earlier that summer, a young girl met the same fate when she was also found dead in the river. But who is responsible and why are people ending up dead in the water?

The book definitely has an underlying eerie and dark feeling to it and you are constantly wondering and guessing who could be responsible or guilty.

Even though I was very excited about starting this book and finding out what the nail biting twist was going to be, I found the story unfolding a little bit slower than Hawkins’ debut novel. Every chapter focusses on a different character, telling their story and giving you insight into their emotions and view of life in the little town, which left me feeling that it took a lot longer to get to the climax of the story.

Would I recommend this book to someone?

Yes, I would. I will probably, without fail, read every single one of Paula Hawkins’ books in the future and will just have to accept that not all her books will be exactly the same or have the same volcanic twist.

It still is a good psychological thriller and keeps you confused and left in the dark up until the very end and Hawkins definitely knows how to construct a good psychological thriller and keep the reader turning the page.

It is great to see Morné Morkel back to full form at great pace! Watching his opening spell during Bangladesh’s second Innings was simply thrilling and was millimetres unlucky to miss out on a third wicket.

Overall, the Proteas as expected, dominated the proceedings in the first match, with Dean Elgar missing out on a double century by one run and the debutant Aiden Makram falling three runs short of a century on debut.
