It may be 2018, but women are still being discriminated against in the workplace. Daily incidents of abuse occur that often leave female workers feeling like second-class citizens.

The latest of these acts of abuse occurred when female employees at TopBet in Germiston were “strip-searched” after menstrual blood was found in one of the company’s bathrooms.

Gauteng police confirmed that two people have been charged with sexual assault in connection with the violation of women.

EDITOR’S STAY CLEAR OF LISTERIOSIS BY AVOIDING

tame TIMES wants to warn all Ekurhuleni residents that South Africa is currently in the middle of the world’s largest documented outbreak of listeriosis‚ a disease caused by ingesting listeria monocytogenes bacteria found in contaminated food.

Early last week reports showed that 79 babies and seven children aged between one and 14 have died as a result of this disease.

Ekurhuleni residents are urged to avoid all ready-to-eat food meats such as viennas, russians, frankfurters, sausages and cold meats that are not typically cooked.

This follows an announcement by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Sunday, 4 March that the listeriosis outbreak, which has to date claimed over 100 lives nationwide, has been found to have originated from the Enterprise facilities in Polokwane and Germiston.

Furthermore, it is with great sadness that tame TIMES reports that a respected Alberton resident, Anneline van der Merwe passed away on Wednesday, 7 March at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. Information of the funeral details will be found on page 3.

The whole Alberton community prays that God will strengthen her daughter Chanel van der Merwe, her family and friends in this difficult time.

In other Ekurhuleni news, registered indigents are entitled to nine kilolitres of free basic water per month, however the consumption in some households far exceeds this allocation due to excessive water leaks.

Due to this massive loss of water the city has been called on to fix leaking water fittings at identified homes across Ekurhuleni. Close to 60 000 households have been identified based on their water consumption, with those with the highest water consumption being attended to first. More information will follow in the next edition.

READY-TO-EAT MEAT PRODUCTS Ekurhuleni residents are urged to avoid all ready-to-eat meat products such as viennas, russians, frankfurters, sausages and cold meats that are not typically cooked.

This follows an announcement by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Sunday, 4 March that the listeriosis outbreak, which has claimed over 100 lives nationwide to date, originated from the Enterprise facilities in Polokwane and Germiston.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s environmental health practitioners also conducted tests which confirmed this finding.

Since November last year, laboratory tests have confirmed 22 cases of listeriosis in Ekurhuleni comprising of 10 adults and 12 four-week-old and younger infants.

While Enterprise has committed to recalling all affected products, pregnant women, new-born babies, elderly people and anyone with a weakened immune

system are strongly advised to stay clear of all processed food products.

Listeria is a bacterium that is naturally found in the environment and commonly occurs in soil, water, vegetation and in the faeces of some animals. The bacterium has contaminated a wide variety of food types, including meat and meat products, both pasteurised and unpasteurised dairy products, fresh and frozen produce (fruits, vegetables and sprouts) and ready-to-eat products.

To prevent the spread of Listeria, basic hygiene should be followed along with the following measures: - Thoroughly cooking raw foods from

animal sources, such as beef, pork or poultry; - Washing hands before preparing food, before eating and after going to the toilet; - Washing and sanitising your kitchen surfaces and utensils regularly, particularly after preparing raw meat, poultry and eggs, including industrial kitchens; - Washing raw vegetables and fruits thoroughly before eating.

Respected Alberton resident, Anneline van der Merwe passed away on Wednesday, 7 March at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

The daughter of the deceased, Chanel van der Merwe said to tame TIMES that Anneline will be always be remembered for the impact she made by touching many lives.

“She has been a well-known resident in Alberton for the past 40 years and owned De Landauer Coffee shop in Alberton North where a lot of people were lucky

“Egg-citing” fun at Carnival this Easter

The Easter weekend is a festive celebration of togetherness and family styled fun at Carnival City. The outdoor Pocket Park will be a hive of activity for little people from 30 March to 2 April. Between 11h00 and 19h00 daily, kids can meet the Easter Bunny, collect their complimentary Beacon marshmallow egg, have their faces painted, decorate eggs and enjoy entertainment by Easter performers.

The Commission on Restitution of Land Rights received a land claim by Mr Thabo Lucky Mogagabe on behalf of the Bakwena Ba Mare a Phogole community in respect of several properties in the City of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni. Die burgerregte-organisasie AfriForum het in Februarie 2018 ‘n nuwe bestuurskorps vir die Germiston-tak verkies. Dít volg nadat AfriForum verskeie inligtingsessies vanaf 2017 aangebied het oor die rol wat sy takke speel om gemeenskappe te verbeter.

Die plaaslike gemeenskap het tot dusver ongeveer 655 liter boorgat water en 135 liter reenwater ingesamel wat deur Bronco Tool Hire na die veearts vervoer en afgelewer is.

“Ons wil graag die gemeenskap bedank vir hulle bereidwilligheid om betrokke te raak. Hierdie dien weereens as bewyse van die krag wat daar in ‘n gemeenskap steek om saam te staan en mekaar te help in nood,” sê Machiel Pelser AfriForum se Alberton-woordvoerder vir die projek.

Kids receive eye test for new school year Many kids started the new academic year right by going for eye tests ensuring that they start the new year with clarity and self-assurance. Poor eyesight in children can often lead to learning difficulties, lack of confidence and struggling to play sports that require hand-eye co-ordination, but this can be avoided by doing an eye test in time.

Zelda van Coller, Owner and Optometrist at Zelda van Coller Optometrists Dynamic Vision says that they are impressed by the number of kids who are educated on the importance of eye care and making their eye health a priority this year.

Ek en Gysie was oppad uit vir ‘n vroeë ontbyt en inkopies daarna. Net na 07:15 ry Gysie om petrol in te gooi by die Michelle straat garage. 07:30 sluit ek die deur oop om uit te gaan en buite te wag, en besef my selfoon lê in die kamer.

Ek hardloop kamer toe en net toe ek my foon wil vat hoor ek die deur en ek neem aan dis Gysie. Ek los toe eers die foon om vir hom te sê ek is amper klaar en storm terug deur toe. En net daar, in die deur, staan twee mans. Handskoene, Balaklavas, en donker swart klere. Skielik hoor ek my hart jaag in my ore, ek voel naar van die skrik, en ek kan nie beweeg nie. Die een man slaan na my maag toe

en ek probeer keer met my arm, weer en weer. Toe stamp hy my teen die muur vas, slaan my met die vuis in die gesig, en ek val. Al wat die monster sê is “Stay down there”, en hy trap op my rug oppad in die huis in. Nou lê ek daar mensies, ek sien toe eers die snymerke op my arm, en die bloed wat orals loop.

Maar waaraan dink ek? Of my kombuis skoon is. Het ek die bed opgemaak, is die sitkamer netjies. En ten spyte van alles, voel ek die benoude lag opkom.

Ek probeer sluk om te keer, en in die proses sluk ek ‘n enorme klomp wind.

Die oomblik van snaaks gee my net die bietjie ekstra krag om na my sleutel in die deur te gryp en die noodgeval knoppie op die remote te druk. Die alarm begin dadelik skree en ek val plat op my maag neer, met die gevolg dat ek kliphard wind opbreek. Ek hoor hoe die twee skarrel in die huis om weg te kom en ek weet, nou is dit my einde.

Maar hulle hardloop bo oor my by die deur uit. Die tweede een trap op my rug weer en met die ontsnap nog ‘n enorme wind by my mond uit. Toe kon ek nie meer nie, ek bars uit van die lag. Toe die sekuriteit inkom lê ek nogsteeds in die gang en lag. Dit was eers toe Gysie met piering groot oë by my kom wat die gelag ‘n gehuil word. Later by die hospitaal na die steke en met iets om my te kalmeer besef ek: Ek het oorleef.

Ek leef. My hart is vol dankbaarheid.

Tip-Selfs die donkerste tye kan snaakse oomblikke hê maar, pas julleself op. Wees altyd bewus van veiligheid.

Rugby players goes to the next level GERMISTON ART THEATRE TO BE RE-NAMED The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Cllr Mzwandile Masina announced to the Hope Restoration Church in Chloorkop near Kempton Park on Sunday, 11 March, that the Germiston Art Theatre will be named after the slain artist Dumi Masesila.

The former Rhythm City actor was killed when he was highjacked in Tembisa in August 2017.

Masina brought various city departments with him to the church to showcase their service delivery programmes. Among the programmes that the congregants were told of was the refurbishment of new water reticulation infrastructure in Ekurhuleni to replace the aging system.

The new water infrastructure will result in interconnection of the Ekurhuleni towns

water systems.

The Executive Mayor said the church visit was part of an on-going programme to engage religious communities for social cohesion.

“Churches are an integral part of our society. There must always be an opportunity for dialogue so that the society can self-correct using the values and teaching of the church,” Masina said.

He called on residents to continue to visit their local municipal offices to register to vote or to verify their registration status.

Senior Pastor at the Hope Restoration Church Chris Mathebula said churches cannot make an impact on the community without partnerships with other stakeholders such government.

Ben Saohatse SECURITY: AN IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION has still not WHEN LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME been found By: Garin Joemath

Alberton resident, Ben Saohatse is still missing but is believed have been allegedly killed by his wife and son in February 2017. tame TIMES had a telephonic interview with the Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela who said that Ben Saohatse is still missing and that it has been a 1 year now.

Ben Saohatse, a 70 year old was last seen at his house in Brackendowns, and his white Ford Bantam was found in Zonkizizwe township on the evening of Sunday, 26 February.

Makhubela said that Ben Saohatse wife Caroline Mashau and their youngest son Tebogo Saohatse is believed to have allegedly killed Ben. “Ben’s 26 year old son Tebogo Saohatse was found in February last year, days after his father’s disappearance, in a veld in Zonkizizwe near Katlehong. The suspect appeared to have blood stains on his trousers but claimed that he had slaughtered a cow at home. Officers went to search the vehicle he was driving in but Tebogo ran away dropping his cellphone. Officers traced the vehicle to Saohatse’s home in Alberton, where they found his wife mopping up blood,” said Makhubele.

Police spokesman Kay Makhubele said Tebogo was later found and arrested. His mother was also arrested and charged with the murder.

“The mother and son appeared in the Palm Ridge Court on 9 October 2017. The mother was realised on bail for R50 000 but the son still remains in custody,” said Makhubele.

The matter will be heard on 16 March at the Johannesburg High Court.

Masabatsa Saohatse, the sister of Ben Saohatse is still in shock and stated that it does not make sense to her that Saohatse’s wife and son could be involved in the murder and disappearance of Ben. Last year the family stated that they only want the truth to be revealed and want to find him.

Looking for a new home can be very exciting; but with so many things to consider, it isn’t unexpected that one or two things can be overlooked.

Security is very important to keep in mind – from the safety of the neighbourhood to how well-protected the property you are interested in is.

There are a couple of basic rules to follow when it comes to considering the security of a new neighbourhood and home, says Fidelity ADT Managing Executive Stuart Clarkson.

1. Get to know the neighbourhood Do some research about your prospective new suburb. A local estate agent should be able to offer some insights into crime trends and its overall safety. The South African Police Services (SAPS) website is also a good source of information about crime statistics.

“Look out for signs of vandalism in the area as this could be a red flag,” says Clarkson. Is there a neighbourhood watch or community security scheme, and are there regular security patrols?

No neighbourhood will ever be completely crime-free, but it is good to have an idea of what the situation is like on the ground.”

2. A layered approach to assess security Clarkson recommends taking a layered approach – working from the outside, in – to evaluate what measures are in place.

From the boundary, make sure that there is nothing that could help a burglar easily get into the property; for example a bin that they could climb onto and over the wall. Also trim back any low-hanging tree branches that could be used to gain entry.

“Looking at the exterior of the property - i.e. the garden and backyard - keep an eye out for anything could be used as a weapon, or to gain entry to the home.

Also be sure to check hinges and locks of gates and doors to ensure that they are not rusted and cannot be easily forced or broken.”

Then head indoors and do a similar

check. Look specifically at the state and quality of hinges and locks on windows, gates and doors. Also pay attention to the condition of burglar bars that may be attached on the inside of windows.

3. Check out the security system If the property you are interested in already has an alarm system installed, find out from the agent or current occupants if it is still linked to a private security company and, if so, which services they do or do not subscribe to.

Also find out from them if there are any issues with any of the components; when last the system was tested and what the outcome of that test was.

In some instances the homeowners may choose to disconnect the system and cancel their security subscription before they move out. If that is the case, contact your preferred provider who should be able to reconnect it quite quickly and easily. When this is done, be sure that the system is tested and that all hardware is working properly before the technician leaves.

“You should also ask the previous residents or the agent to return all keys

to doors and locks on the property. If you have any doubt that you are not the only one with keys and access, change the locks for peace of mind,” says Clarkson.

“Deadbolts are ideal for outside and garage doors.”

4. Meet the neighbours Once you’ve made the decision to buy or rent the home and you’re all settled in, make some time to head next door to meet the neighbours. They are often the first to notice when something is wrong or out of place, and in many cases the first responders in an emergency.

“If you’re comfortable doing so, exchange contact details with your neighbours and agree to keep an eye on each other’s homes,” says Clarkson.

In closing, he also suggests finding out if your neighbourhood has a community watch.

“If you aren’t able to join in on active patrols, there are other ways in which community members can support their local neighbourhood watch. When residents, police and private security companies work together to curb crime, we do see positive results.”

Two suspects nabbed for hijacking cigarette truck On Tuesday, 6 March, two suspects were arrested in Alberton for hijacking a truck carrying a load of cigarettes valued at approximately R2-million.

According to Portia Ngcobo, a truck with the load of cigarettes was hijacked from an undisclosed company in Kempton Park.

The load was then moved onto another truck, which belonged to one of the suspects. The two suspects made their way to Alberton.

tame TIMES understands that the suspects were caught inside an undisclosed warehouse in Chrislou Crescent, Alberton North at around 5am on Tuesday.

The truck and its load were parked outside the warehouse.

It is not yet clear what the suspects were doing inside the warehouse.

The arrested suspects, aged 36 and 55, will appear at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court soon.

Suspect apprehended for possession of drugs in Primrose A man was apprehended by the Primrose police for the possession of drugs.

While on patrol in Rietfontein Road on Saturday, 3rd March, members of the Gauteng K9 Unit noticed a man acting suspiciously.

Spokesperson for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome said that the 53-year-old became notably tense when the officers approached him.

Maome stated that the officers searched him and found a plastic zip-lock bag containing a white substance believed to be drugs.

He was taken to the Primrose Police Station where he was charged with possession of drugs after allegedly admitting to police that the confiscated bag contained Cat. He will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

100 Cycle Challenge When: Sunday 06 May from 07:00am to 03:30pm.

About: Gauteng’s newest, fastest race the 100 Cycle Challenge is an annual 100km road race open to both professional and amateur cyclists – anyone over the age of 15 who loves cycling can enter!

It’s the only road race in South Africa exclusively dedicated to cycling development. In partnership with Cycling South Africa, the aim is to drive transformation and development of the sport at grassroots level. R50 from each entry will go towards Race The Future, a Cycling South Africa initiative aimed at getting the youth active, engaged and off the street. The race also endorses Support SA Talent, a project aimed at developing platforms that raise funds to enable talented cyclists to compete at national and international levels.

The race will be timed by RaceTec – no chip, no time. Prize giving will take place within half an hour of the winners crossing the finish line. After the race expect live music, crazy comedy, great food, kiddies’ entertainment and much more.

Consumer advice is always welcome in these tough economic times. From the budget orientated motorist to the parent shopping around for their beloved teen we all need more information to make good financial choices. With that in mind, what is the cheapest motor vehicle available in South Africa, and what are you getting for your money?

Not all that much should you wish to purchase a brand new vehicle. At R99 955.00 you can drive off in a Chery QQ3 SE. Formerly known as the Daewoo Matiz, this Oriental offering has been with us since 2008, without much change since, which has most likely kept it at the top of the leader board for the cheapest South African offering.

The Chery QQ3 base model presents a low maintenance 3 cylinder, 0.8 Litre petrol engine, mustering up a poultry 38kw output but with miniscule fuel consumption. After a browse through the official Chery QQ3 brochure not all that information was given (well...there is not all that much car to be informed about). Apart from seats for 5 occupants (good luck), a top speed of 138 km/h and a 0 to 100 sprint in just under 19 seconds there are some safety features on offer; an ‘advanced’ breaking system and a robust side impact protection bar (I think what they mean is a door.)

However if this doesn’t excite your wallet, nor your eager-to-drive teen, then there are a multitude of alternative options for the same sort of money in the second-hand car market. I know from experience there is nothing to fear, provided you obviously know what to look out for; an article idea brewing already. Too much hype is placed on purchasing an out of the box offer when there are perfectly reliable, value for money vehicles plastered all over the internet, looking for good homes.

At a quick glance online for under R100k, a 2014 Hyundai i20 with 42 000 km on the clock and a 2015 VW UP with 38 000km on the clock, superior brands and far more reliable safety features than just doors. Make a purchase with not just your wallet, but safety in mind too.
