Baby Eden Laird, who was reported kidnapped on Tuesday, 2 May, has been found unharmed.

The child was last seen at 8.45am on his family’s domestic worker’s back when she went for a walk on Wednesday, 2 May. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom, reportedly of R 6 million. On Thursday‚ the family paid a substantial amount but the baby was not returned.

The Pink Ladies, an organisation for missing children, led a campaign on social media, supported by law enforcement and the general public to try and find the baby.

After an unsuccessful money drop on the 3 May the PHO Trio Team was asked to assist with a money drop on 4 May. An operational plan was put together by the team and the money drop off was observed. When the team had sight of the baby a tactical takedown of the suspects was executed.

The baby was safely returned to the father and taken to a hospital for a medical examination. Two suspects were arrested at the drop off point. “After further investigations the domestic worker from the baby’s parents’ home was also arrested with some of the earlier received ransom money.” Dessie Rechner, director of missing children NGO Pink Ladies, said the boy had been safely returned

to his father and taken to a hospital for a medical examination as a precaution after a sting operation.

The heroes who took part in the operational success are: PHO Trio LtCol Prowse, Capt Hicks Team; SAPS HO, Ekhuruleni Cluster, Brackendowns; Fidelity Specialised Services; Rentrak R4; and Brackendowns CPF.

According to Pink Ladies, further investigations led to the arrest of a further two suspects, and the vehicle used to transport the kidnapped baby – a red Nissan Sentra – was also recovered.

All suspects will be detained at Brackendowns SAPS, and FCS Ekhuruleni West Cluster will investigate the case further.

NOTE

It was a tough week for the Alberton community this past week after the kidnapping of 13-month-old baby boy named Eden Laird.

Eden Laird, who has grey eyes and blond hair, was last seen at about 08:45 on Tuesday when a domestic worker took him for a walk and never returned.

According to the Pink Ladies the domestic worker had tied him to her back with a light blue blanket. A ransom of R 6 million was demanded for the release of the baby.

Fortunately for the Laird family, Eden was found through the wonderful work done by SAPS and other stakeholders. tame TIMES learned that child goes missing every five hours in South Africa, as per the statistics released by the South African Police Service Missing Persons Bureau for 2013. This adds up to a total of 1697 children.

According to Missing Children South Africa, 77% of the children are found.

Sadly, this still leaves us with at least 23% of the children never being located.

The trafficking in children is a global problem affecting a shocking amount of families.

Community members are being urged to always be vigilant with their children and also to report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.

Figures Alberton Finesse International Modelling Academy presented their second social showcase and graduation show for the year on Sunday, 15 April at the Bracken Park Hall.

It was a combined junior and senior show highlighting the talents of the students.

0ver 100 students participated on the sparkling black and red ramp where the glitz and glamour of a Red Carpet Event was showcased.

There were the traditional black and white evening outfits as well as bling dresses that shimmered in the lights.

Demure colours and bright colours were presented in all their glory – it was a feast for the eyes to behold! Judging was based on the originality of the outfits and there were several tied places.

The Alberton Fashion Team won their division on the S.A. IMTA Cruise

Convention in March this year aboard the MCS Sinfonia after they competed against 18 Figures branches from Southern Africa.

The group comprised of 12 students and this sequence was also showcased at the social event.

Last but not least on the agenda for the day, was the much anticipated International Model of the Year semi-finals. These students were divided into groups based on their age, gender and height.

The outfits were standardized to a Figures black top and either shorts or skirts for the girls and long black trousers for the boys. Congratulations to all the students who won medals and placed on the day – Alberton is proud of you!

The Finals for the International Model of the Year will take place at the Roodepoort Youth Theatre on 29 July 2018.

Woman killed in car collision On Tuesday (1 May), a woman, believed to be 24-years-old was killed following a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Kliprivier and Swartkoppies Road in Patlynn, south of Johannesburg.

ER24 paramedics were returning to their branch when they were flagged down by passing motorists.

Upon arrival at the scene, paramedics found a light motor vehicle lying on its side in a ditch, some distance away from the road.

Another light motor vehicle was found a short distance away.

Upon closer inspection, paramedics found the body of a woman, believed to be 24-years-old, lying inside the overturned vehicle. Unfortunately, the woman had already succumbed to her numerous injuries.

Nothing could be done for her and she was declared dead.

The driver of the other light motor vehicle was assessed and found to have escaped injury.

The local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

Enzo Pietropaolo to appear in court soon Former top banker, Enzo Pietropaolo, is accused of killing his wife Manuela Pietropaolo in Alberton on, 13 November 2017. tame TIMES reported earlier this year that Enzo shot his wife multiple times at her home in Iris Street, Brackendowns, Alberton.

The accused applied for bail in the Palm Ridge Magistrates in month of March 2018.

The bail application case was postponed to 1 March and again to 6 March. On 6 March the case was again postponed after

the defense’s recusal application. The bail application ran for three days, March 15, 19 and 26 March.

The Palm Ridge Magistrates court heard that the accused failed to prove exceptional circumstances why he should be released on bail.

Pietropaolo is still kept in custody and the matter has now been postponed to Friday, 11 May, for the public prosecutors to determine if the matter must be taken to the High Court or remain in the Magistrate’s Court.

The weather certainly didn’t disappoint on Saturday, 20 April, for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Race Day. It was HOT, HOT, HOT and the fashion and racing followed suit.

Having the beautiful Miss South Africa 2017, Dr Adè van Heerden and the dashing Ryk Neethling on course was a treat for everyone and the fashion specifications of top hats and tails for gents and fascinators/ hats for ladies were welcomed with open arms.

It looked like a scene from the red carpet as celebrities and visitors to the course strutted their stuff from one side of the parade ring to the other.

The excitement was palpable in the build up to the Racing. It’s a Rush Best Dressed Competition was electrifying and although it doesn’t happen often that a gent is a serious contender to take the winning prize, this time it was deservedly so, and Tsholofelang Troy Molaiwa won the best dressed competition. He will enjoy a 2 night stay at Sun City courtesy of Sun International. Just when patrons were getting over this excitement, Nother Russia once again, in a nail biting finish against Al Danza, stormed in and crowned herself “Princess of the Turf” in the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes. And if that wasn’t enough adrenalin pumping action, the diamond drop tickets were a complete sell out!

Meyersdal entrepreneur donates big prize to charity

Afeefah Mulla Choonara a fashion designer who owns Modest Queen, a studio in Meyersdal under the brand Naked Couture, won R50 000 in cash and nominated AlImdaad Foundation as her charity of choice to receive another donation of R50 000 in the West Pack Lifestyle Group competion.

West Pack gave away R500 000 in cash prizes to customers, and another R500 000 in cash donations were given to winners’ favourite charities.

Choonara was a lucky winner.

Afeefah Mulla Choonara was extremely happy to donate to the Al-Imdaad Foundation.

She explained to tame TIMES that the Al-Imdaad Foundation is a non-profit humanitarian aid relief organisation (NGO) registered in South Africa, dedicated to providing humanitarian services in crisis and noncrisis situations to most needy orphans, widows and destitute, irrespective of race, religion, culture, creed and geographical boundary.

The Helen Zille Branch, which is the Democratic Alliance (DA) branch in Ward 38 welcomes the news that Baby Eden has been found safe and returned to the parents.

The DA would like to congratulate the South African Police Service (SAPS) as well as members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) who worked tirelessly on this case to ensure the safe return of Baby Aden.

The DA further congratulates the team for the arrest of a five suspects, including the domestic worker from the baby’s home.

It is a great relief for the community of Brackendowns that the baby has been found and has not been hurt in any way. To the parents, the DA would like to send its well wishes as you recover from this ordeal.

Furthermore, the DA would like to take this opportunity to appeal to law enforcement agencies to ensure that the suspects face the charges as stipulated by SAPS.

Zelda van Coller Optometrists has the cure for those dry winter eyes

Red and scratchy eyes, episodes of excess tearing followed by stinging, dry eyes and even blurred vision – many people experience the symptoms of dry eyes, especially in winter. The go-to-treatment for dry eyes is typically teardrops.

However, instead of simply treating the symptoms of dry eyes, Zelda van Coller, an Optometrist and the owner of Dynamic Vision Zelda van Coller Optometrists, says it’s best to get to the root cause.

“Teardrops certainly offer relief from the symptoms of dry eyes. But, it can’t cure dry eyes and can by no means be considered the most effective treatment.

Dry eyes, or ocular surface disease, that is left untreated can lead to chronic inflammation.

“It is always prudent, for the benefit of long term eye health, to find the cause of dry eyes. This is especially true for anyone who has been suffering with dry eye symptoms for some time.

An underlying condition known as Meibomian gland dysfunction is now recognized as a significant factor in many cases of dry eye syndrome.

Another cause of dry eye is aqueous deficiency when the lacrimal glands don’t produce enough watery fluid to moisten the eyes. Other common

causes of dry eyes are ocular allergies and auto-immune diseases.

These conditions can be treated effectively,” says van Coller. She has always had a keen interest in dry eye syndrome and did post graduate studies on the subject. She frequently attends workshops and lectures on dry eyes to stay up to date with the latest developments, and continues to work closely with eye specialists to treat dry eyes. At her practice, Dynamic Vision Zelda van Coller Optometrists in Alberton, she has a topographer and specialized software to conduct comprehensive dry eye tests. These non-invasive tests can test the wateroil balance in the eyes to get to the cause of dry eye syndrome.

“We are able to examine the tearfilm chemistry, volume and stability in much detail. We closely look at the Meibomian glands to determine if they are healthy and we are able to treat them if it is the cause of the dry eye. Our aim is to rehabilitate the tear film.

“We focus on finding the underlying problem causing dry eye. We don’t believe in just prescribing teardrops as a solution,” says van Coller.

According to van Coller, there are various factors that can contribute to dry eye, such as: Medications including antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy.

Advancing age, with people over 50 more at risk of developing dry eye.

Disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid

arthritis, thyroid disorders, and Vitamin A deficiency.

Hormonal changes in women during pregnancy and after menopause.

Windy, smoky, or dry environments.

Seasonal allergies.

Extensive use of computers and other screen devices.

Patients receiving chemotherapy.

Contact lens wearers. As the causes of dry eye syndrome vary, so do treatment options. Patients are given a full report after dry eye testing at Dynamic Vision Zelda van Coller Optometrists. If the inflammation is severe and cannot be treated at the practice, they are referred to an eye specialist. For symptomatic relief of dry eyes, the practice has a Blephasteam system for steam treatments. Blephasteam is a patented medical device that harnesses the power of moisture and heat that helps to increase blood flow to the eyes and melt away waxy meibum to help relieve dry eyes.

After a few sessions, patients enjoy relief from the symptoms of dry eyes, with oil flow and tear quality from their eyes dramatically improved.

The Blephasteam is also used to warm up the eye lid before using other specialized equipment that is able to open the Meibomian glands if they are blocked.

“Blephasteam works well for most patients with dry eye syndrome. This includes patients with Meibomian gland dysfunction and its associated conditions. We definitely advocate this treatment for patients who have

chronic dry eyes. Nobody should have to rely on using teardrops on a daily basis in order to cope with the uncomfortable symptoms of dry eyes,” she says. She offers a few tips for dealing with periodic dry eye: In winter, use a humidifier or a quality air filter to keep air around you moist. Cut back on the amount of time you spend staring at your computer screen and other devices.

Try to blink more often while working at the computer. Research shows that we tend to blink less when on the computer and this contributes to our eyes drying out.

Check your medications for any side effects causing dry eyes.

Gently massage your lower and upper eyelids several times daily.

If you are often in a windy area, wear a pair of wraparound sunglasses to reduce the chance of wind blowing directly into your eyes and drying them out. Limit your exposure to fans, heaters and air conditioners which can contribute to eyes drying out.

Avoid cigarette smoke.

Ask your optometrist on treatments available at the practice- like gland evacuation and debridement, blephasteam treatments etc .

“It is important to consult your eye care practitioner if you continue to experience symptoms of dry eyes,” concludes van Coller.

Infinity War Breaks Records Marvel Studios film becomes the biggest opening day and weekend of all time in South Africa

Audiences across Africa assembled in cinemas this past weekend (April 27-29) to witness the unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making, delivering Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War not only to the top of the box office, but also into the record books.

The nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe took in nearly R24.6 million at the South African Box Office, with over 287k attendances for its opening weekend, including Thursday night previews. This debut ranks as the biggest industry opening weekend ever in South African Box Office history. Friday 27 April also saw Avengers: Infinity War take in over R8.4 million, the biggest industry

opening day ever at the local box office. Elsewhere on the continent, Avengers: Infinity War has become the biggest opening weekend of all time in West Africa with over N137.4 million. The film achieved the biggest April and second highest opening weekend (after Marvel Studios’ Black Panther) in East Africa with over kes 23.4 million.

Also in cinemas, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther continued its historic run at the South African Box Office with the film passing an unprecedented R105 million with nearly 1.4m attendances.

The search is on for South Africa’s best school choir with the Big Voices for Little Garden competition.

It’s super easy to enter: school choirs just have to learn the Checkers Little Garden song and get creative with their performance.

Schools who believe their choir has what it takes are invited to enter by Sunday, 20 May to stand a chance of winning their share of R60 000 - the winning school will walk away with R30 000, while second and third place will receive R20 000 and R10 000 respectively.

How does the competition work?

School choirs must learn the Checkers Little Garden song and film their choir performing the song using any instruments of their choice. Entries can be submitted via Facebook by tagging Checkers SA and using the hashtag #CheckersLittleGarden, by emailing it to competitions@shoprite. co.za or by uploading their video to www.checkerslittlegarden.co.za.

The competition will really heat up when the top 10 entries have been selected and the public have the opportunity to vote for their favourite school choir by Sunday, 3 June 2018.

City partners with private pharmacies to reduce waiting time at clinics

The City of Ekurhuleni has partnered with commercial pharmacy groups such as Clicks, Pick ‘n Pay, Dischem and Medirite with assistance of the National Department of Health to serve as chronic medication pickup points to reduce waiting times at

healthcare facilities.

The public-private partnership with the 49 contracted pharmacies in Ekurhuleni, complements the already existing 111 pick-up points which service about 44 800 patients.

“This service gives residents the

opportunity to choose the most convenient pharmacy for them to collect their medicine from,” said the MMC for Community Services Cllr Dora Mlambo.

“On average, 60% of patients visiting our clinics are stable patients, only there to collect their chronic medication.

Ideally, these patients should not be queuing, hence we have expanded pickup points to private pharmaceutical companies,” Mlambo said.

The service is only open to stable patients who have undergone a minimum of six medical reviews and their medical records confirm adherence to the proper dosing schedule.

Once a health practitioner has given the go-ahead for a patient to collect their prescription, a patient will sign a consent form to indicate the pharmacy of their choice where they want to collect their two months’ treatment.

Patients are expected to visit the clinic after six months, for re-scripting and medical assessment. However, should any sickness or medical complications arise, the patient is strongly advised to visit their nearest clinic for medical attention.

A proof of identification and clinic card will be required when collecting medication at the pharmacy.

They both got a 1st at Nationals in their respective fields in 2017.”

Carmen Nepgen a pupil at Alberton High School has been in the top 3 for National Model of the Year over the past 4 Years, qualified at the Alberton Figure’s semi-finals and made it through to the 2017 National Model of the Year Finals held in December at the Roodepoort Theatre. Many finalists competed Nationwide, a spectacular event with awesome staging, sound, lighting and huge cash prizes amounting to about R300 000. She made Top scorer and WON the 13-15 skills division at National Model of the Year. In addition she received a R5000 cheque and a sponsored all expenses paid trip to attend the IMTA Convention South Africa 2018 to Bazarutu held on the Indian Ocean - The MSC Sinfonia.”

Over and above that Carmen has also made Top scorer and finalist for Figures Alberton competing at the International Model of the Year 2018 and won the grand prize: an all-expenses paid trip to the IMTA New York Convention in July.

Carmen also recently made top scorer for Figures Alberton National Face of the Year 2018 competing for the R10 000 prize.

Leonie gave a big thank-you to IMTA SA for fantastic future opportunities the models receive. She stated that Figures Models Academy is one of the best organizations in nurturing talent in future supermodels not only in South Africa but worldwide, and has seen the super experience it is getting discovered by the World’s top agents & Directors.

Tyla, who is in Matric this year, has competed in the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (SANESA) over the past years in many disciplines, namely dressage, equitation, working riding, hunter, in-hand showing, performance riding, inhand utility, jumping and English mounted games.

At the SANESA National Competition held in 2017, Tyla placed 1st for in-hand utility receiving a gold medal in large classes of 35-45 riders each, competing against finalists Nationwide.

She also received two firsts and a third for team placing’s. Gauteng colours were awarded to her.

Over and above these amazing achievements, Tyla received the SANESA High School 2017 National Multi Discipline Champion floating trophy from the Arab Horse Society of South Africa.

At the SANESA Nationals this year 946 schools competed, 3719 participating riders and 4296 horses.

I takes dedication from parents, coaches, riders, time and hard work. This is an exciting sport which has many disciplines. Unlike other sports there are two athletes in constant motion with each other, the horse and rider, and this takes time and sometimes frustration to reach a stage of fitness, synchronicity and competency.

Riders compete over four qualifiers and the top twelve riders in each discipline and level are up for selection to represent Gauteng at the National competition. Over 11 000 entries were received in Gauteng alone.

Tyla started riding Dawn this year. It has been Dawn’s very first shows in any disciplines other than in-hand showing. Dawn competed at the SANESA Qualifiers in dressage, equitation, working riding, performance riding, in-hand showing and jumping. Tyla has been schooling Dawn in the different disciplines saying that she is so willing, believing in her. She truly is a very talented rider with a very bright future.

Cyclists gather to

#SWEATTHE100 Demacon’s Kim le Court won the elite women’s race in 2:42:42, her fourth consecutive victory this season so far. Maroesjka Matthee and Lynette Burger completed the podium in second and third respectively.

BCX’s Nolan Hoffman was happy to win the inaugural 100 Cycle Challenge in Germiston today, a victory he said made up for last week’s Tour Durban where he finished third.

Hoffman came out on top in a mass bunch sprint where he beat ProTouch’s Jayde Julius and Office Gurus’ Ryan Harris into second and third place respectively.
