Life Grand Cafe at Mall of the South hosted the BMW Motor Club on Sunday 29 May as part of the launch of its BMW 600 Drive Campaign – a charity initiative aimed at raising funds and donations for a chosen charity.

The BMW 600 Drive Campaign took place at the Roof Top Entrance 8 from 10:00am to 03:00pm which featured a roster of new and old BMW models.

Having selected Door of Hope Children’s

Mission as its local charity, Life Grand Cafe Mall of the South set up donation boxes on the day as well as a piggy bank for Door of Hope, which will remain in the restaurant for patrons to make future monetary donations.

Life Grand Cafe Mall of the South also served a lamb spit lunch and donated R10 towards Door of Hope for every meal sold.

Members from Brackendowns SAPS and CPF were also an integral part of the campaign as they drove in convoy to deliver the donations to Door of Hope’s baby houses in Glenvista.

CITY OF JOHANNESBURG RATE INCREASES Letter by Concerned Glenvista Citizen How are pensioners supposed to keep up with the seemingly never ending rate increases in this City?

Many of us pensioners are homeowners and are still expected to pay the same rates as everyone else in our community.

I have personally applied for a rate reduction at our regional office on more than one occasion and have yet to receive a reply from them even after I was given a reference number.

I would like to respond to the Glenanda Resident who wrote a letter to tame TIMES, dated Tuesday 10 May, regarding the postmaster who used to work at the Glenvista Post Office.

He currently works on his own in the tiny post office at Comaro View Shopping Centre in Bassonia.

candace.king@tametimes.co.za Ward 54 Councillor Sergio Isa dos Santos was robbed at gunpoint around 10:30am in Newtown while attending the City of Johannesburg Budget Speech on Tuesday 24 May. Councillor dos Santos was making his way to the Budget Speech; which was held at The Forum Company’s Turbine Hall; when he was mugged while in his vehicle at the corner of Jeppe and Ntemi Piliso Street in Newtown.

“I was waiting behind other vehicles to enter the underground parking when two men approached my vehicle and demanded that they wanted my phone. Before I could even react the one man pulled out a firearm and pointed it at me,” explains Councillor dos Santos.

“They then took my phone, told me to close my window and quickly walked away. They were so quick and I was unable to react. Unf o r t u n a t e l y, these types of incidences are a daily occurrence in the Johannesburg CBD but thank God that nothing else happened,” adds Councillor dos Santos.

Councillor dos Santos opened up a case docket at Mondeor SAPS which was transferred to Johannesburg Central SAPS. “I recently received my case number.

Vodacom 4U store robbed The Vodacom 4U store at Mall of the South was robbed shortly after opening time at 09:00am on Monday 23 May. Four well dressed black male suspects were involved in the armed robbery at Vodacom 4U. Two of the suspects entered the store and held up the staff at gunpoint, making staff pack sealed cell phones into a large carry bag. The staff were also tied up during the robbery.

The two suspects then carried the bag out of the store down the escalators, while the other two suspects kept watch outside the store. According to Mondeor SAPS Constable Elizabeth Mnguni, the suspects left with more than R600 000 worth of stock.

The suspects loaded the stolen goods into

a white Isuzu bakkie that was parked in the parking lot and drove to the pedestrian gate. The suspects exited the mall’s property through the pedestrian gate, leaving the bakkie behind. They left the mall before security could be alerted.

A getaway black BMW was waiting on Kliprivier Drive outside the property of Mall of the South which the suspects made us of, fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

No customers were in store at the time of the robbery and no one was hurt. Members of SAPS, detectives, security, and forensics were on scene. No arrests have been made, notes Constable Mnguni. A case was opened and SAPS are currently investigating the case.

Outdoor X: a weekend of the great outdoors Once again, the exciting Outdoor X outdoor, leisure and lifestyle show took place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May at Malonjeni Guest Farm in the Vaal Triangle.

The Outdoor X story started almost six years ago when event organisers Quentin and Liezel Versfeld had a dream to bring something exciting, extraordinary and absolutely wonderful to the Vaal Triangle.

Featuring over 350 top quality exhibitors, the Outdoor X show showcased all the latest products and services by outdoor

industry leaders. From bowshooting, a 4x4 track, and dog obedience demonstrations, to helicopter rides, skydiving, scuba diving, and more, the weekend long outdoor expo was jam-packed with adrenalin and fun.

Drawing in the crowds, Outdoor X featured some of the Afrikaans music industry’s top artists including Cordelia and Elvis se Seun.

New this year to Outdoor X were dedicated hunting, agricultural and pet divisions.

Above all, the show was a huge success, with visitors leaving the expo impressed.

JRA finally fixes damaged wall The damaged sound wall in North Street, Townsview has finally been repaired by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), reports Ward 56 Councillor Dennis Jane.

Townsview residents raised their concerns regarding the damaged wall to the JRA last year. In 2015, the sound wall accrued damage several times, the most recent of which caused a hole to appear in the wall that allowed people to climb through, notes Councillor Jane.

Councillor Jane further wishes to inform residents in the ward that the JRA will soon be embarking on sections of road resurfacing.

“The three roads that have been chosen due to the poor surface condition are sections of Garden Street in Rosettenville, North Road on the Townsview / Oakdene border and a stretch of Soutpansberg Road in Oakdene,” highlights Councillor Jane.

Successful operation leads to arrests A joint operation between Mondeor SAPS, D&D Tactical and Mondeor Sector 1 CPF took place during the morning of Wednesday 25 May. Two suspects were arrested on separate incidents of possession of dagga in Liefdeen-Vrede. Three suspected sex workers were arrested at a suspected brothel in Glenanda.

(Photo: CPF) Booyens SAPS’ stern warning to liquor traders On Monday 15 February 2016, Booysens SAPS Captain Buckus and members from Visible Policing were busy doing an operation in the Booysens area when they saw a premises selling liquor.

Upon enquiring, it was found that this premises, which is situated in Turffontein, did not have a liquor licence. The premises was closed and all the alcohol was confiscated. A docket of “selling liquor without a valid licence” was opened.

The docket was complete with all the relevant paperwork and was taken to court. On Tuesday 17 May a sentence was passed – R3000 or six months; a further eight months imprisonment; suspended for five years. The owner was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“This is a stern warning to all unlicensed liquor premises,” notes Booysens SAPS Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik.

Suspect arrested for possession of dangerous weapon On Tuesday 24 May around 10:30, Moffatview SAPS Warrant Officer Chunku Biyela and Captain Noxolo Mtshalala were busy with operational duties in La Rochelle, an area notorious for robberies and illegal activities.

“The members were doing observation at the corner of Johannesburg and 1st Street. The members noticed a male looking suspicious wearing a brown jersey and khaki pants,”

says Moffatview SAPS Constable Rebecca Bila.

“WO Biyela decided to approach him and suddenly he started walking away. WO Biyela then shouted at him to stop. He identified himself as a police officer and was then asked to be searched. WO Biyela found a brown okapi knife him and arrested him for possession of a dangerous weapon,” adds Constable Bila.

Truck driver and R600 000 WORTH OF stock vanishes On Tuesday 24 May, truck driver Garikayi M a v h u n g a disappeared along with R600 000 worth of stock.

Mavhunga left Xenathabo 2001 Trading with one of the company’s trucks, a Toyota Hino, which was loaded with bedding sheets to the value of R600 000.

Mavhunga vanished along with the bedding stock. The empty truck was found abandoned at the N17 off-ramp near Heidelberg Road.

On Friday 20 May around 10:00pm, two suspects, aged 30 and 32 years of age, were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property and possession of an unlicensed firearm by Mondeor SAPS Detectives officers.

Detective Sergeant Comfort Nkutha, Detective Constable Abram Maluleke and Detective Lazarus Rakgoale were patrolling when they spotted a silver VW Polo parked on Swartkoppies Road in Liefde-en-Vrede.

Two males were busy loading flat screen televisions into the vehicle. When detectives approached the vehicle, it drove away and the detectives managed to apprehend and arrest the two suspects. One suspect is still at large.

It was discovered that the property was stolen in Glenvista earlier that day. The suspects appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 23 May.

Mondeor SAPS successes Mondeor SAPS reports that from Wednesday 18 to Wednesday 25 May, a total of 34 arrests were made.

The suspects were arrested by Mondeor SAPS for various offences including two for possession of an unlicensed firearm, two for possession of suspected stolen property, and 12 for shoplifting.

The rest of the suspects were arrested for crimes varying from fraud, malicious damage to property, housebreaking and theft, and assault common.

Graffiti artists spray new life into Rosettenville Candace Sofianos King

Rosettenville’s bustling Main Street was beautified on Saturday 23 May during Caps and Cans’ graffiti event.

Hosted by Caps and Cans founder and owner Natalie Rösner, the event featured more than 40 top Johannesburg graffiti artists who cleaned up the streets by beautifying the area with unique graffiti artwork.

CELEBRATING AFRICA DAY THE GREEN WAY

TREE PLANTING: (From left) Lesego Mangaba, Alicia Motimele and Nozipho Magagula In celebration of Africa Day on Wednesday 25 May, the Miss Earth South Africa winners, ambassadors and Pikitup educational teams have been hard at work, educating students, planting trees and greening minds during the course of Africa Month.

Their goal has been to plant 54 trees across communities in South Africa; representing the 54 countries that make up the African continent. The 54th tree was planted at Tsogo Sun’s 54 on Bath in Rosebank on Africa Day with the GM Catia Viegas and Hayley Moore, the Corporate Affairs Coordinator at Tsogo Sun Head Office.

The support for this initiative grew and before the team knew it, 83 trees were planted by friends and family of the Miss Earth South Africa organisation. The last 15 trees were planted on Africa Day at Midrand Primary School and Ebomini Primary School, together with the Miss Earth South Africa applicants from the Pretoria and Johannesburg regions.

The learners at the schools shared in a workshop on separation at source, recycling and the #WasteStopsWithME campaign, showing them that each person can make difference. Pikitup and Miss Earth South Africa visited two schools in Midrand on

Africa Day and were joined by the Pikitup Eco-Rangers who excited learners and teachers alike with their waste campaign assembly.

“We chose to celebrate Africa Day at this school so as to share our African ethos with these learners. Each tree is symbolic of each one of the African countries that make up Africa. We have to stand together as Africans and share an equal love for our continent. We need to understand that we all form a part of our continent, and it is important for us to stand together,” says Catherine Constantinides, the Executive Director of Miss Earth South Africa.

Africa Day was first celebrated when the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union (AU), was formed in 1963. It acknowledges the progress that we, as Africans, have made, while reflecting upon the common challenges we face in a global environment.

Africa Day presents an opportunity for South Africans to reconnect and recommit themselves in developing Africa.

To further encourage and forge a common goal of fighting against colonial rule, the conference called for the observance of African Freedom Day once a year, to mark “the onward progress of the liberation

By Hilde Light (Driti) abundance of Prasad, the hundreds of little lights, the beautifully set up dinner tables, the shop selling sacred artifacts all spoke of the dedication of devotees who had put in so much time, effort and love.

Whether it was during the Guru Puja, the Abhishekam, sitting around the flames of the Yagna, participating in the prayers and the chanting of Lord Narasimha’s mantra, or during Arti, I seemed immersed in His love and protection.

We also listened to a delightful narration of the ancient Vedic scripture’s epic of Prahlad Maharaj who was always absorbed in meditating on Lord Vishnu and Shri Krishna.

Because of Prahlad’s devoted spiritual life, his cruel father, a demon named Hiranyakashipu, considered his son an archenemy. Upon trying to kill Prahlad, the supreme Lord appeared as Lord Narasimha-Dev, saved Prahlad and killed Hiranyakashipu.

Then Lord Narasimha-Dev asked Prahlad what boon he desired and Prahlad’s humble prayer was to liberate everyone, to which He agreed.

An English translation of the Srimad Bhagavatam of the words Lord Narasimha-Dev reads: “Those who

McManus adds, “In this era of divisive rhetoric and rampant hate speech online, we need unifying images like these now more than ever.”

A group of staff members from Investec spoilt the aged at Reuven Senior Complex by donating blankets on Saturday 21 May. The heart warming donation became a reality thanks to the Cradle Project, an initiative run by a committee of Investec staff that volunteer to raise funds, make donations, and assist charities and causes that are lesser known or supported.

One of the members of the Cradle Committee, Terry-Anne Mohamed, who assisted with the distribution of the blankets to the elderly of Reuven, said that the committee was established a few years ago, primarily to raise funds for the needy and the destitute.

I always enjoyed his jokes, his shows and the seven famous Road movies he made with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour.

On his deathbed, they asked him where he wanted to be buried.

Here we pay tribute to a man who lived a long life with a career spanning nearly 80 years, who loved the game of golf and who made us laugh and really did make a difference.

I trust this little article will put a smile on your face and joy in your heart as we remember the birthday anniversary of the great entertainer and comedian, Bob Hope who came into this world on 29 May 1903.

Having appeared in over 70 films and authored 14 books, Hope was praised for his comedy timing, funny one-liners, rapid-fire delivery of jokes and his self-deprecating sense of humour. The song Thanks for the Memory is widely regarded as his signature tune.

I had forgotten he had lived to the ripe old age of 100 and also didn’t realise it’s been over 13 years since his death on 27 July 2003.

KUNG FU WINNERS: (From left) JP Niehaus, Jason Chretien, Warren Chong, Sifu Mark van den Berg, Mohammad Nabeel Ismail, Sebastião Rodrigo, Ethon Moller, Thato Tabudi Winchester Hills-based Martial Centre recently took part in the Inter-school Kung Fu Tai Chi Tournament hosted by the Shaolin Martial Arts Centre in Kempton Park on Saturday 09 April.

Martial Centre students did exceptionally well, bringing back four gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

The winners were from the centre’s children and adult classes. Students took part in the Northern and Southern form divisions as well as the weaponry and semi-contact

part of the competition. It was an awesome day of martial arts filled with forms, nerves, demonstrations and sparring.

Martial Centre is open five days a week and is run by full-time instructors Sifu Mark and Chaulien Warren. Not only does the centre offer quality training in a variety of Kung Fu disciplines but also offers traditional and contemporary Tai Chi classes for all ages.

On the morning of Friday 20 May, Alberton High School hosted their annual Golf Day at Glenvista Country Club on Vorster Avenue in Glenvista.

With parents of the school having participated, 16 four-balls competed on the day. Refreshments were served as soon as the players arrived and the festivities went smoothly as the players teed off.

Alberton High ended the day off on a high note and handed out prizes to the winners
