31 October was a big day for Alberton finalists in the Miss SA Schools 2016 pageant. It has been a long journey and the girls made Alberton proud, with no fewer than three division winners and one second runner-up.

“It’s been a long road and these girls worked really hard, from raising funds for Cupcakes 4Kids With Cancer, to making a difference in their local community, representing their schools to the fullest and embracing who they are,” Bianca Biccard said.

Alexia Munn was crowned division winner for Grade 2-4; the beautiful Athena Munn was crowned winner for Grade 5-7 and Phumelela Zingitwa stepped out as “2nd princess” for the Grade 10-11 division.

Veronique Kuit, a student at Alberton High, walked away with the title of Miss SA Schools 2015/16: Grade 8-9 division, as well as a few other awards: Miss Debutante,

Satire in DIE SUBURBS

Tong-in-diekies-uiteetreëls A few years ago, I wrote an article about the meaning of your dreams. To this day, it’s still one of my favourite articles – and topics to speak about for that matter. The past week, I’ve been having the strangest dreams, referring me back to said article.

I spoke to Ms. Suzette Weideman, a psychologist at the health care centre on the NWU Potchefstroom campus while doing research on the topic. She told me that people are likely to grab the closest book to read about the meaning of their dreams.

She added that it’s important for you to look into the emotion you experienced while you had a certain dream, and think of how it applies to current happenings in your life.

If dreams provoke emotion that won’t go away the next day, it could cause concern or anxiety, which indicates that there’s something in your life you need to take care

of. You can do this by keeping a dream diary, which will help you remember your dreams, resulting in your getting to know yourself.

With the year coming to an end, there are many things that could influence your emotional state and eventually your dreams.

The paper is filled with some stress-relievers this week. On page 9, you can see how Reunert College grants a second chance if you want to improve your marks, and even offers tertiary bursaries based on merit.

The I AM School for Autism recently opened in New Redruth, giving many children a chance to learn, which wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

For the matrics, we have some tips on page 8 on how to stay on top of the game until the end. We hope that these will help those who need it at this stressful time of the year.

Indien die kelner op enige stadium van die ete egter enigiets op jou gemors of uitgegooi het wat nie dadelik met ‘n servet afgegee kan word nie, kan hierdie persentasie verminder word.

“I have had an almost nine-month challenge with all of those who wanted me to get rid of the beard to support this cause to grow my beard - with many having much to say about it. Now nearing the end of ‘bearddom,’ I have decided to use the occasion as an initiative to raise funds both for Blessed Life SA and Amazing Grace Children’s home.”

The Project Pedicure

In 2012 The Laser Beautique and The Society for Animals in Distress (SAID) partnered to rejuvenate “Project Pedicure” which aims to provide the working equines and their owners in the Tembisa area with access to improved productivity and well-being. Project Pedicure is a single and vital element of the Coal Yard Programme and it aims to assist SAID by raising funds to shoe the working horses of Tembisa every 18 to 21 days during the winter months when horses need to be shod most often. SAID works in eight townships in the north and north-east of Johannesburg. Within Tembisa, by far the largest township they operate in, SAID services approximately 120 equines through The Coal Yard Project which was established in 2004 providing education, professional veterinary care and expertise in ensuring healthy animals and responsible ownership.

10 November 2015 Contractors repair the Swartkoppies Road pedestrian bridge.

BRIDGE RE-OPENED

Pedestrians in Brackenhurst can once again cross Swartkoppies Road safely after the bridge was reopened following repairs.

A part of the 190-metre-long bridge was knocked off by a truckload exceeding the height limit.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality conducted repairs to the crossing, which involved the installation of a steel-reinforced structural concrete deck and steel hand railing.

Although legal steps were taken against the company responsible for the accident, the Metro urges drivers to be wary of, and comply with, the rules of the roads they utilise.

“It is important for vehicles to obey the load and height restrictions on our roads to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and motorists as well as damage to property,” said Member of Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Petrus Mhlari.

MSSA’s MWEB 2015 South African National LAN Championships marks the start of the process of selecting the 2016 Protea eSports team that will attend the 8th IeSF World Championships.

It was mentioned at the IeSF’s AGM that the IeSF intends to increase the number of titles at the World Championships.

Already the MSSA’s level of participation has gone from only two players in 2009 to nine in 2014.

The MSSA remains absolutely committed to sending teams to all future IeSF World Championships.

Not only will the MSSA send teams to the World Championships, but the MSSA will also continue with participating in the ever popular International Online Test Matches.

Registrations will close on 8 December 2015.

CRIME AWARENESS The Din-Al-View CPF has a few safety tips and warnings for the public. Crime is increasing drastically, especially now before Christmas.

When you leave the house, inform someone where you are going and the time you expect to return. Save their number on your cellphone and memorise the details of the person to be contacted in the event of an emergency. Save the details on your phone as ICE (In Case of Emergency).

Avoid carrying large sums of cash, if possible. If you have a handbag, carry it close to your body at all times and make sure the zip is closed. Do not be tempted to put it into a shopping trolley. Criminals are often opportunistic and will take advantage of an easy situation.

Distractions: One of the major issues adding to crimes against women is often that women are distracted while going about their day.

Distractions can range from caring for

children, carrying shopping, to speaking on a cellphone. Do not walk in the street or mall while talking on your cellphone. People are often of the opinion that being on the phone is safe, because the person on the line can call for help, but that rarely works out. Chatting can distract you from being aware of your surroundings. That said, anyone walking by themselves should be ready to make an emergency call on their cellphones.

Be aware of people around you when heading to your vehicle, especially at places such as shopping centres, petrol stations and ATMs. Ensure that you take a moment to check the street before pulling into a driveway, be it your own, or a friend’s.

Driving: If you are driving, the first thing to do once you are inside your vehicle is to ensure that all the doors are locked. Never drive with a handbag or any other valuable items on a seat or in the view of anyone looking into

With the matric exams in full swing and one or two subject papers ticked off the list, the Class of 2015 is likely to start glimpsing the freedom that lies just a few weeks away. Unfortunately, this enticing vision may lead to a more relaxed approach to remaining papers, and impact negatively on results, an education expert says.

Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution, says matriculants who are starting to feel an almost palpable lifting of pressure should take this as a cue to re-assess their approach during the home stretch.

Dr Coughlan says matrics can take the following steps to ensure they continue delivering their very best throughout the exams: Do not be thrown off track if one of your papers did not go well.

Stop stressing about the subjects you have already written, advises Dr Coughlan.

REVIEW YOUR STUDY ROSTER Dr Coughlan says learners should now be well into the groove of studying, and should consider whether they can up the ante a little bit, by putting in an hour or two extra to complete a mock paper, for example.

DEVELOP A DAILY ROUTINE AND EAT THE FROG It is very important to decide on a daily routine and stick to it. Having a set routine means you do not have to decide from moment to moment and hour to hour what you are going to do next, which allows your

full attention to be on your preparations.

Importantly, you have to eat the proverbial frog, says Dr Coughlan.

AFTER EACH PAPER, GET RIGHT BACK IN THE SADDLE Learners will, understandably, be tempted to take it easy on the afternoon and evening after writing a major paper, says Dr Coughlan.

I AM SCHOOL FOR AUTISM

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterised, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviours.

All children are guaranteed the right to education in South Africa.

However, children with more specific education needs are sometimes forgotten on the sidelines. There are only nine schools for children w i t h autism in the country. entire A u t i s m is an i n v i s i b l e d i s a b i l i t y.

People and children with autism are often wrongly judged as being naughty or defiant, but they suffer from an inability to understand the social rules that make sense to everybody else.

Children with autism do not just acquire these skills as part of their development.

These skills have to be taught directly to children with autism before they can start formal learning, so it is extremely important that these kids receive early intervention Greg Simpson is a man who has taken the step to start an autistic school called I AM SCHOOL FOR AUTISM in Johannesburg South. He was inspired to start the school after seeing how his friends, Cuen and Bronwyn Sharrock had to spend two hours a day driving their daughter Elisa, who is diagnosed with autism, to and from school.

“The travelling on a daily basis is not healthy for an autistic child,” said Simpson.

So he decided to partner with Cuen and

Bronwyn Sharrock to start a school for autistic children in Johannesburg South.

Greg says, however, that the problem is not just in Johannesburg South but everywhere.

He believes strongly that parents in the South should not have to drive all the way to the North because there is no autism school in Johannesburg South - it is just too far.

Cuen Sharrock was invited to speak on the Cliff Central radio channel with Brent Lindeque to discuss the School of Autism and he had this to say in the interview: “My daughter is four years old and she is diagnosed with moderate to severe autism on the autistic spectrum and since her diagnosis we have struggled to access services, but primarily education. There are only two autism specialist schools in the whole of Gauteng and it’s government schools at least and they look after the whole autistic children in Gauteng from a public schooling point of view.

“There are private schools but besides the costing they are found in the northern suburbs side of Johannesburg and we are based in Alberton and we drive an hour every day to school and for an autistic fouryear-old it is a struggle, because we have fights and meltdowns. We have to get up super-early which she does not like.

That’s when me and my wife decided to look if we can set up something in our area. My wife started to contact schools in the area and asked if they were willing to open an autistic class that we can help with and also get a specialist that can connect with us. We approached a courier group there, but there just was not any movement in that space.

“Autism disorder treatment is a specialised field and, from an education point of view, there is quite a lot required.

If you take the Education Department they have a multiplier on their funding based on the nature of the special needs.

So whatever you can get with the two or three times funding on a normal kid for the special needs, autism is the highest

classification, to get six times the resources. It is a very resource-intensive disorder to treat and also there is not a lot of knowledge around it, so when you look at your development plan as a school you are probably going to move into a lot of other areas before you will move into something as specialised as autism. I have never built a school ... but me and my wife are blessed to have a set of friends around us and what we have done from a parent’s point of view in terms of parenting someone on the autistic spectrum, we have learned a lot.

“We investigated education methodologies and the best practices; we have linked up with friends overseas and we have a friend that visited us from the States and brought us various materials because they have got a very inclusive system where the districts support the schools that set up special needs classrooms. So, from a teaching point of view and a therapy point of view, we hooked up with the professionals that really know and understand autism.

“From an education point of view, in terms of running the school, we partnered with

Greg Simpson and Cola Simpson - they are amazing and they know how to run a school. Me and my wife do the autism part.”

I AM SCHOOL FOR AUTISM will cater for children from the ages of three to six years old, because the growth plan of the school starts with a pre-school; at a later stage they will also start a primary school and secondary school. On a day-to-day basis, everything will have routine and structure, and the school will offer the Teach and Makaton programmes and specialised teachers. There will be only six children in a classroom and both verbal and non-verbal autistic children will be taught according to their needs. The normal school day runs from 7:30 to 13:30 and the holidays are the same as those for Model C schools.

The Nippon Dojo Shotokan Karate Club located in Dinwiddie recently took part in the 12th annual Shin-Gi-Tai South African Championships, which was organised by the Shin-Gi-Tai Karate Academy Alberton and held in Alberton.

The three karatekas represented the club and achieved 11 medals for Kata, Weapon Kata and Kumite among them.

Congratulations to the latest champions: Tyron Harmse (Brown belt): Gold for individual Kata, Silver for team Kata, Bronze for weapon Kata, Gold for Kumite (fighting).

Silver medal for Aden Aden Jansen brought home a silver medal.

Aden Jansen participated in the Ekurhuleni Karate Association District Trials for 2016.

This was Aden’s first time competing at this level and he did extremely well, managing to fight his way to a silver medal. Aden has therefore been selected to represent Ekurhuleni (formerly Eastern Gauteng) at the Gauteng Provincial trials in February 2016.

This will result in official Ekurhuleni colours

approved by the Ekurhuleni Sports Council.

Aden works extremely hard, training about five hours a week.

His hard work and dedication is paying off and he is now working towards the next step of competing for his full Gauteng Provincial colours.

TUMBLING GYMNASTS SUCCESSES Resilience Gymnastics Club Tumblers did well in their competitions this year.

New tumblers Alex van der Merwe and Deren Moodliar competed in Level 1 and achieved great results in their competitions. Alex came 2nd overall at his first competition held in Benoni and 3rd overall in Randburg. Deren received 2nd overall at this same competition and received 1st overall at the competition in Benoni.

Senior Tumblers Donelle (Level 3), Seth, Adrian and Dane (all level 4) took part in competitions at which Adrian obtained a 5th,1st and 6th place. Dane obtained 3rd, 4th and 1st place. Seth obtained 1st and 2 x 2nd places. Donelle obtained 2 x 5th places and a 4th place.

All these competitions are qualifiers for the Gauteng Championships in Randburg and all the Senior Tumblers qualified for this event. At this event Adrian and Donelle finished in 4th overall position and Dane in 5th overall position.

Seth van der Merwe was crowned Gauteng Champion by winning this competition. This
