The principal of Bracken High School, Mr A. Jordaan, attended the annual City of Ekurhuleni Academic Excellence Award Ceremony on 27 January to receive the esteemed award from the Ekurhuleni Mayor,

Clr Mondli Gungubele. The ceremony was held at the Kempton Park Civic Centre.

The Class of 2015 consisted of 219 matrics and achieved a 100% pass rate.

A total of 151 learners managed to achieve university entrance.

Congratulations to the staff of Bracken High, the learners, their parents and the management on the massive achievement.

To my father, on his birthday:

Toe ek nog baie jonk was (voor Gysie my lewe betree het), het ek ‘n beste vriend gehad. Ons het alles saam gedoen, troues bygewoon, met vakansies gegaan, ons was basies onafskeidbaar.

Een naweek nooi hy my saam na ‘n familie byeenkoms toe. Dit was omtrent vir jou ‘n storie.

Die hele familie het bymekaar gekom vir ‘n naweek op ‘n plek anderkant Polokwane (soos dit deesdae genoem word). My beste vriend het pas ‘n motor ryker geword, so ons het agter sy ouers aangery, met sy jonger broer en dié se meisie saam en al die pad die musiek kliphard gespeel en saam gesing.

Net so voor ons die bestemming bereik, raak die boetie baie opgewonde om sy ‘’trouvrou’’ aan die familie voor te stel. Ek en my vriend lag lekker, want ons weet almal gaan dieselfde van hom verwag. Toe dit nou tyd is om almal te ontmoet, staan ons vier in ‘n ry. ‘’Hallo oom, hoe gaan dit?

Hierdie is my meisie,’’ vertel die broer opgewonde.

Almal sit met groot afwagting vir my en kyk toe dit my beurt is. ‘’Hallo tannie, hoe gaan dit? Hierdie is my –‘’ en hulle begin so half uit hul stoele opstaan – ‘’vriendin,’’ stel hy hulle teleur.

Die vriendskap het intussen doodgeloop, maar die herinneringe van die lekker vakansies, bly my by.

Gysie is selfs spyt dat hy nooit hierdie vriend van my ontmoet het nie. Hy reken hulle sou baie lekker saam kon kuier.

TIP: al loop vriendskappe dood, koester die goeie herinneringe.

WHAT’S APP, DOC? Daar is een in jou straat. Een in jou familie. Daar is een in jou kerk. Een by jou werk. Daar is waarskynlik baie meer as een op jou foon. (Of baie meer as een in jou familie). Die WhatsApp-groep het mense aan die gons en gesels. En almal is omtrent deesdae op een of meer van hierdie groepe.

Dit het begin by sekuriteitsgroepe in die buurt. “Almal, wees op die uitkyk, daar is iemand verdag wat met ‘n oorpak en ‘n blik verf in die straat afloop, en ‘n brood onder sy arm. Ek twyfel of hy bunny chows gaan maak met ‘n brood vol verf.”

Toe kom familiegroepe by met boodskappe soos “Haai julle, sien almal Sondag, toemaar, tannie Diet gaan nie trifle maak nie, oom Hannes het al die sjerrie opgedrink. Sy is woedend. Sy bring nou net koek. En die bebloede koekroller. Sien julle eenuur.” Op werksgroepe moet jy altyd polities-korrek wees en goed sê wat almal laat lag en van jou laat hou, en almal laat dink jy is slim, veral as jou baas op die groepie is.

“Nice one, Michael”. Op die kerkgroep word aktiwiteite en tye gereël en verse aangestuur en op die vriendegroep word koeitjies en kalfies bespreek.

Dit klink alles goed en wel, maar as almal dan nou so goed bekend met hierdie groepe is, hoekom weet mense

nie hoe om dit reg te gebruik nie?

Op die sekuriteitsgroep sal Glynnis van nommer vier aanhou om ‘n foto van haar parakiet op te sit wat al ses maande gelede weggevlieg het, in die hoop dat iemand in die straat dalk iets gesien het. Of dalk binnekort Swede toe gaan waar die parakiet waarskynlik teen hierdie tyd al trek.

Op die vriendegroep sal daar eendag onheilspellend op almal se skerms die woorde “Gert left the group” verskyn en almal sal wonder hoekom Gert die gebou verlaat het, wat die storie agter die storie is. So gebeur daar goed op hierdie groepe soos mense wat onbesonne goed plaas wat niemand regtig wil sien nie soos vreeslike prentjies, of grappies wat nie snaaks is nie of goed wat sommer net van die internet afgetrek is, en goedsmoeds aan die niksvermoedende groep gestuur word.

Mense sal antwoord op ‘n groepspost waar daar uitdruklik gevra word dat niemand moet antwoord nie want dan “biep” almal se fone in die groep onnodig of iemand sal halfeen in die oggend skryf “het iemand my rooi trui gesien” terwyl die 17 ander lede van die groep al teen halfelf aan die slaap was en met die truistorie uit ‘n diepe slaap geruk word.

Dis hoekom daar sekere reëls is om

THE MTN STORE AT MALL AT NEWMARKET IN ALBERTON FELL PREY TO AN ARMED ROBBERY AROUND 9:30AM ON THE MORNING OF FRIDAY 29 JANUARY.

“

The MTN store at Mall at Newmarket in Alberton fell prey to an armed robbery around 9:30am on the morning of Friday 29 January.

While MTN staff members were attending to customers, three male suspects entered the store. One suspect pulled out a firearm and aimed it at the store employees and clients.

The suspects ordered the MTN employees to take them to the safe located at the back of the store. The suspects then gained

access to the store’s safe, where they stole cellphones and money. The three suspects then fled the scene.

One shopper witnessed the three suspects get into an old white Toyota Corolla vehicle.

A fourth suspect was seen as the driver of the vehicle.

No one was injured during the armed robbery. An investigation is currently underway. Further information regarding the investigation will be reported on as new developments unfold.

Opinion piece by Palesa Yates Race is still an issue in South Africa in 2016. It is a social, political, economic, educational and linguistic issue. It affects the public sector as well as the private sector; it impacts young and old, male and female, black and white. Race may not always be discussed, but it is always considered.

The truth is that your race affects where you live, if you work and how much you earn.

Although democracy and one-man-onevote party politics became a reality in 1994, they did not magically equip all schools with libraries and science laboratories, shorten queues in public hospitals and turn shacks into comfortable family homes for all. South Africa’s apartheid past cannot be instantly undone by applying the CTRL + Z solution.

The consequences are still with us. Our past has shaped our present and will continue to determine our future for some time to come.

According to StatsSA, unemployment for black African youth in 2014 stood at 39,4%, while 35,3% of coloured youth were jobless – as compared to only 15,7% of Indian and Asian youths and 9,6% of young whites.

In 2008, the figures were 36,3% for black youths, 28,3% for coloured youths, 17,4% for Indian/Asian youths and 9,3% for white youths. In the six years between 2008 and 2014, there were no significant changes in the interracial gaps. The quality of education enjoyed by the various groups in the past largely determines their employability in the present and whether or not they are currently employed will shape their families’ standard of living in the future.

The playing fields are not level. Although in certain cases it may feel as if apartheid has been reversed for some, overall the statistics say otherwise; and just as Verwoerd’s policies are not the fault of a white citizen born in 1994 (who was advantaged by them), they are also not the fault of a black citizen born in 1948 (who was disadvantaged by them).

Nevertheless, we all have to live with the consequences and somehow find a mutual way forward. Trying to ignore the elephant in the room is not helpful; hurling racist insults on social media is even worse; hate speech is just horrible. The issues need to be raised and dealt with respectfully, reasonably and with consideration.

The recent social media complaints about the annual South African New Year’s Day beach party tradition exposed a very ugly side of our nation. Columnist Pippa Davis summed up the situation very well: “Our white privilege however needs to be sharply checked.

Numbers a n d volumes coming to the beach, for the v a s t majority of people, is a rare family outing.

“These are the real working class. Families where fathers and sons work far away and see their families only at this time of year, and save all year for the celebration of New Year where a dip in the sea is not a R3,000 a day self-catering apartment with a sea view balcony and Weber braai, but an overcrowded taxi and limited resources.” [sapeople.com]

CONSISTENT WATER LEAK Mrs Kennedy writes: Although I reported the water leak in 7th Avenue, in front of Alberton Steel and Pipe, Alberton North, every month for the last 12 months to the Ekurhuleni Council, the water is still running down the road. Trying to get through to the call centre is impossible. I obtained the reference number “174 5979” when I reported the leak on 4 January 2016.

ANOTHER MESSY SITUATION Jackie Owgan writes: Re your article in tame TIMES page 5, 26 January 2016: I would like to add a piece to this story. We have lived in Estelle Street for the past 30 years. The last six/seven years we have had an ongoing complaint with the Alberton Council as well as the councillors in our ward.

Despite the number of phone-calls and emails we have sent to the Alberton Council in this regard, the sewage continues to pour out of the pipes outside number 13 and number 11. The Council will come and unblock the sewerage and two days later it flows. They will not get to the root of the problem and fix it.

They continue to send someone out at the taxpayer’s expense.

We have pictures of many occasions that we have sent to our ward councillor, who does not even answer us anymore. The sewage ends up outside our entrance and we drive it into our driveway. The stench is unbearable. The toilets are always bubbling; the sewerage [problem] is ongoing. I do not even want to think what it is costing the Council to send a truck every two weeks. Why don’t they think and try to get to the root of the problem? Is it just another way of earning overtime?

I, as a resident who pays rates and taxes, am sick and tired of this nonsense. I think I am one of the only people in the street that complains – because we are at the end of the road and it collects outside our gate like a dam.

I can assure the public that every complaint about sewers or any other issue I do handle, although I am only a part-time councillor. A suspect by the name of Augus t Cloete is wanted by Alberton SAPS for two counts of murde r, as per case number 106/10/2014.

The incident took place on 6 Octobe r 2014 at Pieter Uys Street, when the suspec t allegedly shot and killed two people , John Majola and Zodwa Nyalungu. The suspec t was immediately arrested and detain ed by Alberton SAPS. The docket was forwarded to court while the suspect was in detent ion.

The suspect was granted bail after

appearing in court twice while he was in custody. He then attended the procee dings seven times before making the decisio n to move away from Alberton and chang e his contact details.

Sewer a health risk for learners in Ward 38 A motion disallowed by the Speaker of Council, Mrs Patricia Kumalo in November 2015, among other points included the following facts regarding upgrades needed for the sewer system in Brackendowns and Brackenhurst, in Ward 38.

The WA 10 upgrade of the sewer system was one of Ward 38 prioritised IDP projects in the 2014-15 and the 2015-16 financial years. In spite of these efforts by the ward committee there was no budget allocation for the WA 10 Sewer System in either of these financial years.

There are seven schools in the Ward 38 area, of which some are regularly affected in a negative way by sewer spills. At Laerskool Orion there were 13 complaints launched in the past 13 months and the problem has not been solved yet. Since the start of the 2016 school year the learners and parents in this school already had to walk through sewage twice.

Sometimes it takes three days before the matter receives attention. The department cannot keep up with the number of call-outs as the cleaning of sewer lines cannot solve the problem on a permanent basis, as only an upgrade of the system will accomplish this goal.

Petitions were filled in by parents of two schools so far. Other schools and the public are also taking part in the “STOP THE SEWER” campaign, in ward 38. Petitions signed by the parents of Laerskool Orion were handed to Council at the Council meeting on 29 January 2016 to address the sewer spill in Estelle Street in Brackenhurst.

It will be interesting to see if the Mayor and his executive really care about the wellbeing of all the children in EMM, by immediately making money available for a WA 10 sewer system upgrade in Ward 38.

MAYOR CLEANS UP

The year 2016, among other things, will be a year when residents will be encouraged to go and vote for their local government as well as ward representatives.

Considering that this year’s elections will be the first time many young people register to vote, the tame TIMES will be publishing a number of articles ahead of voter registration.

There are two ways residents can register to vote. The most common way many people register to vote is by visiting their local voting districts, the places where voting will take place. The first voter registration weekend will be on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 March, when the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will assist residents to register to vote.

Another way residents can register to vote is by visiting the IEC offices in the area.

For Boksburg residents, the IEC offices are at the Boksburg Civic Centre, Room G34, Corner Commissioner and Trichardt streets.

With changes to the ward demarcations, it is important for voters to note that, although the wards may be changing, voting districts will remain the same. The tame TIMES will publish the maps of the new ward demarcations as soon as they are made available to the public.

It is the start of the school-year again and for most this means a chance for academic improvement.

Here are five study rules that will not only help you to be more focussed, but that will enable you to excel in your exams.

Rule 1: Listen attentively in class The first step is to listen attentively to what your teacher teaches you in each and every subject. Make all the necessary notes and if you do not understand something, ask your teacher to explain it to you again.

Rule 2: Ask your teacher as many questions as possible Asking questions is very important, because when it is time to write your exam and you are still not sure about a section or a concept, then you are in trouble. Many people say that there are stupid questions, but the truth of the matter is that your ‘stupid’ question could help some students in your class understand something they might have missed. There are no stupid questions! So ask as many questions as possible.

Rule 3: Get yourself into a study group How much more can one accomplish when there is a group of people assisting each other to find solutions to their problems?

Study groups help you put together much more. Different methods and concepts that you did not know about can be identified.

Together we can do more - and that is a fact.

Get yourself into a study group and you will be surprised how much more studying you get done. In a group you will learn to break a mindset of limitations because your group can help you to think bigger and more innovatively. In a group, different opinions and understandings of a subject may be shared. Do not underestimate the power of a study group.

Rule 4: Study for three hours a day on your own This is one of the most important rules. Each day, go over your notes for each subject.

Do not study a subject to pass it only, but study never to forget it - that which you learned is also good to apply in your daily life. Each and every day, study for three hours and test yourself maybe once or twice. Study with passion and not for the sake of studying.

Passion will help you grow and will empower you to excel.

Rule 5: Always ask your teacher for advice To ask advice about how you can perform better with respect to your academic results is the key to help you unleash your inner power.

Your teacher is not there to judge you, but to empower you. Also, your teacher knows more or less your learning ability and that is the door to ask him or her how you can improve that ability.

House-breaking is the main concern for the Eden Park SAPS. These criminals tend to strike when residents are at work from 8:00am until 18:00pm, stealing mainly electrical appliances.

Eden Park SAPS is also warning citizens in the area to look out for robberies taking place in Honda and Peterson streets.

They say that robberies take place from 3:00-4:00am, and that the victims are mostly robbed at gunpoint for items that are not even valuable.

Schoolchildren should avoid the open field behind the JD Thomas Hall, says the SAPS, because robbers tend to hang around there to rob schoolchildren walking home from school.

Eden Park SAPS also has a message for the druglords and dealers: “You must be aware - we are on you.”

Opelweg Primary School located in Eden Park is excited and happy to have their new Grade 1 learners as part of their school, after welcoming them on 13 January 2016.

“All 305 learners that applied for Grade One have been accommodated and have been placed in a classroom. We as Opelweg Primary are happy to have them,” said Mr John, the school’s principal.

You will be working under the supervision of a Nursing Manager.

You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating the total nursing care of assigned patients on an intermittent visiting basis.
