If all goes as planned, Alexander City could have a new fiscal year budget that is virtually on time and certainly much earlier than the last several years. Alexander City Finance Director Sandy Stanbrough said at Tuesday’s council meeting that if all goes well a new budget could be ready for a vote by the Oct. 2 meeting of the council. “The FY 18 budget is still progressing and before this week is out I intend to have staffing and capital back to department heads to look at See FINANCES • Page 7

In a move that was expected by most political observers, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced Thursday that she would seek to retain the seat in 2018, after being elevated to post on April 10, 2017 after Robert Bentley resigned amid a growing scandal. In a letter to supporters, Ivey cited the progress See IVEY • Page 7 Donald Neese poses next to his creation from a red oak he had cut down in his yard on Nathan Street.

A new addition to the Alexander City Sportplex was installed Thursday morning, as a new sign from the Alabama Birding Trails system was placed next to the parking lot between the gymnasium and Imagination Station playground. Alexander City Mayor Jim Nabors and Joanne Ninesling, the project manager for the Alabama Birding Trails’ Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail division talked for a moment about the sign and the information on it, including the number of other sites across the region and the birds that might be seen while walking along the Sportplex trail. “There’s a lot of foot traffic out here,” Nabors said. “Hopefully, this will get more people out and walking around the trail here.” Ninesling said she and others with the Alabama Birding Trails had been hard at work, putting up signs across the region See SIGNAGE • Page 3
