Officials look for poster, beef up security at BRHS

Alexander City Police Department and the Board of Education are dealing with what they call a “credible threat” of a school shooting that was came in a social media post made that surfaced Friday.

Police officials issued an alert Saturday morning about the post that was made on the social media site IFunny by an individual with the screen name “Blackyard_V2” saying that “Benjamin Russell high school will be shot up on 9/6.2016.”

The post went on to mention the name of a student and closed with the letters “lol.”

But authorities are not laughing.

DEAR ABBY: I have been married to my soul mate for 25 years. We get along great -- she’s my best friend and a good mother to our three kids. (She takes care of my mom who lives with us, too.)

The only problem is, she loves to sleep.

She will do anything for us except wake up a few hours early without being mad at the world. She gets our kids off to school with no problem, but then returns to bed. Melba was a devoted Christian wife, mother and sister who enjoyed life and served her church – Lineville Baptist Church - as Sunday School teacher, member of the W.M.U. and the Joyful Faithful Workers Sunday School class. She had also been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Dawkins will be remembered and was admired for her positive outlook on life; she saw the best in everyone. And as everyone knows, Melba loved to travel and talk on the telephone. She will be greatly missed.

According to Melenie Bolton, CACC’s associate dean of health science, the college hasn’t seen any real change in the number of applicants to its nursing program.

“That’s because the interest has always been there,” Bolton said. “It’s high all the time. We always have a lot of applicants.”

CACC’s nursing program offers students two options – a oneyear licensed practical nurse certification program, where after three semesters a student can sit for the licensed practical nurse’s exam, and a two-year associate degree nurse program, where after the completion of two additional semesters, a student can sit for the licensed registered nurse exam.

“A lot of our students will get their LPN and then work while they

pursue their RN,” said Bolton.

Bolton pointed out that most LPNs work in doctors’ offices, nursing homes and long-term care facilities while most hospital nurses are RNs. “Nursing positions continue to stay in the top as ‘most wanted’ position,” said Fitzgerald Washington, secretary of the Alabama Department of Labor. “Demand is up nearly 50 percent over last year. With an average hourly wage of close to $30, these positions are very desirable.”

Phyllis Kelley, CACC’s director of adult education, said they have seen tremendous interest in the school’s truck-driver training program.

“We have individuals calling us daily about the program and we have trucking companies that contact us looking for drivers,” said Kelley. “We have a lot of people interested in it, but unfortu-

nately some are limited in being able to afford it.”

Tuition for six-week program is $1,200.

According to an Alabama Department of Labor report released last month, heavy and tractortrailer truck drivers earn a mean wage of $20.14 per hour. Kelley said entrylevel annual income for a truck driver is $35,000 to $40,000. A driver willing to spend more time on the road, she said, can earn more.

Kelley said the CACC program teaches the students safe operation of a tractor-trailer, hours of service for trucking (there are strict rules about the hours a trucker can operate a vehicle without rest), how to keep a log book, how to read maps and how to plan trips to maximize income, among other things.

“We have full time officers daily at middle and high school. We are hopeful that we will be able to identify, confirm if credible or not and eliminate any concerns. For safety reasons we can not disclose our plan of actions that are in place at this time.”

Alexander City Schools Superintendent Dr. Darrell Cooper said Saturday that school officials are working closely with police to make sure every precaution is taken.

“I heard about it just after lunch (Saturday),” Cooper said “I think the post was made yesterday or last night.

Since then, I’ve talked to some of our administrators and the police. Of course, we don’t know who the poster is, but the police are working on that and they plan to have more officers on the Benjamin Russell campus Tuesday morning.

“We’re taking this threat very seriously. You have to these days.”

A local case of convenience store thievery has come closer to a conclusion as the wanted man accused of knocking over a Wetumpka gas station for a “large sum” of cash is now in police custody, according to reports from a local crime stoppers organization.

The crime itself appeared simple.

From its details, two men walked into the store, one entered an untended “back room” and at some point picked up the “large sum” in question.

The “suspect” walked out the back door and both suspects made off down the road in a purple or maroon colored car, according to investigators the report cites.

However, a release from Central Alabama Crime Stoppers indicated that one of the two males profiled in the incident at the 1600 block of Balm Road went to the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office to “clear his name,” after seeing himself in the reports, which had circulating since mid-August.

In their latest update on Thursday, Crime Stoppers said Dwight Anthony Marbury Jr., 30, was listed as captured after being found in Goodwater on Wednesday.

He was “wanted” on first-degree theft of property charges by the ECSO in relation to the August 11 incident, it said.

According to the report a clerk became aware of the nonchalant robbery

only after the two had gone and discovered the missing “large sum.”

■ If you would like to voice an opinion on a topic that impacts a number of residents.

■ If you want to call attention to someone or some group that has achieved something noteworthy.

Whatever you have to say, we’d like to help you say it – for free.

Just write us a letter or a guest column.

We have a few rules designed to help get your thoughts published effectively. First, we require all letters be signed and include a phone number. We won’t publish your phone number, but if we have a question, we need to be able to get in touch with you.

We will not publish any opinion that includes profane, slanderous or libelous statements … and we would encourage you to state your opinion clearly, politely and respectfully. A good rule of thumb is if you can’t say it to your grandmother, don’t say it to the public.

The main difference between a letter to the editor and a guest column is the length. Letters are limited to about 250 words. Guest columns can go up to 500 words or so and include a photo of the writer.

make no secret of how much I love living in Alexander City and the Lake Martin community.

I have fallen in love with this place and the people who call the area home. From the job I do to the scenery I see every day to the cast of characters I meet every day, some days I feel like I have died and gone to heaven.

I guess that feeling has intensified recently after what doctors called a close call.

Some of you may have heard, but I got a firsthand look at the power of Mother Nature and just let me tell you, she is one bad woman.

Exactly a month ago, I had been out cutting grass trying to beat a rain shower and get it all done before meeting friends for dinner.

With the John Deere in high gear, I managed to get it done before the rain started with 20 minutes to spare before I was supposed to head out.

I stood in my bedroom and shelled out of my sweatsoaked, grass covered clothes and was butt naked and ready to hit the shower.

I flung open the bathroom door and as I put one foot on the bathroom tile, a blinding light flashed through the bathroom window and a pop and rumble put a ringing in my ears and shook the floor underneath me.

My knees buckled and the next thing I knew I was flat on my back, unable to talk, move or feel my fingers or toes. The floor under me was wet and I didn’t know why.

It took a minute or so for me to realize that I could move. Slowly I wiggled my fingers and toes and the white spot that was keeping me from seeing started to fade. I rolled over and sat up. That’s when I realized what had happened.

Lightning had flashed through the open window and sent a charge to a power strip that radiated through me.

I lost all bladder control and doctors have since told me that the shock made me lose all muscle control and touched off all sorts of stuff

in my organs.

But in typical Sneed fashion, I figured no blood, no foul. I got up, took a shower and figured I was lucky. Then it was off to dinner I went.

But over the next few days, I worked 45 hours getting the football section done and I tried to ignore the signs my body was sending me.

My left arm ached and acted like it was asleep and there were times when my heart would race like it was beating out of my chest. Then I got to where I couldn’t stay out of the bathroom and thought I was trying to pass a kidney stone.

Thursday morning I knew something wasn’t right and I figured I might need to see someone with some letters behind their name to check me out.

Dr. Robert Edwards was booked solid, but they told me I could be seen at Health Partners Goodwater right away so off I went.

After a urinalysis that looked like a science experiment and an EKG that looked like the Richter tape after a 9.2 earthquake, I got the word. “You need to go to the hospital, and we will call an ambulance,” Tammy Coker, the physcian’s assistant there, said.

She threw out some health conditions with “sis” and “opathy” on the end, but at that point I saw lips moving, but I wasn’t understanding much.

Remember, I’m a Sneed.

“I’m not leaving my car here and I can be there before the ambulance gets here,” I told them.

I got there and they got me back pretty quick. Dr. Roger Eiland ordered all sorts of tests, X-rays and started me on fluids and some awesome IV drugs.

He broke it down in

language that this old South Georgia redneck could understand.

“You are lucky to be alive,” he said. “You are going to have to take it easy for awhile and take some pretty strong drugs, but I think we can get you back to normal.”

Me normal? That would be a change.

But he was right. It’s taken a few weeks, but I feel about like my old self. No, not normal, but like I did before.

Just some tingling and pain in my arm, but well enough to cheer for my Georgia Bulldogs and soak up a great Labor Day weekend in my adopted hometown.

I mean the little things seem to be even better than ever.

To see the crowd at the Equality Fire Department and Pauley Perrette straight from Hollywood beaming with pride over the firehouse that means so much to her Dad and the people in her hometown almost brought tears to my eyes. She spent hours making sure she had visited with everyone.

Then there was the feeling of pride as the 24th returned Alexander City. If you don’t get misty when you see a little girl jump into the arms of her father who had been gone for almost a year, then maybe you need an EKG. The sunset from the hill of the Lake Martin Amphitheater was just a little redder and lasted longer than I can ever recall. The music from Rexton Lee, the Bank Walkers, the Bama Gamblers and the Vegabonds was so pure I could feel it inside.

The lake had never been so blue and the sand on Big Beach had never felt so good between my toes. I can still taste those boiled peanuts from Peanut Point.

I’m rambling.

Maybe it was the lightning, but it’s great to be alive and living in Alexander City on a Labor Day weekend.

GAME DAY PIGS-IN-A-BLANKET A popular game day treat has always been pigs-in-a-blanket. Follow the directions to make these treats! You will need one package of hot dogs, one can of crescent rolls, a baking sheet, and tin foil.

Step One: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line sheet with tin foil.

Step Two:Open the can of crescent rolls. Unroll and separate the triangles.

Cut each triangle in half, making two triangles out of each.

Step Three: Cut the hotdogs in half.

Step Four: Roll each hotdog in a triangle of dough. Place the pig-in-a-blanket on a lightly greased cookie sheet with the tip of the triangle underneath.

Step Five: Bake for 8 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with ketchup and mustard!

“I’ve been hearing about the firehouse and the fire department for so long,” the television star said. “And it’s not new to me. My whole life has been fire engines and fire trucks and wearing (firefighters’) hats.

“We’re actually in the middle of shooting season 14 (of NCIS). But Dad begged and pleaded for me to get out here and they all (the people connected with the show) really like my Dad.” Perrette said she was proud to be in Equality, which she considers her home, in support of her father and the fire department.

“I am super proud,” Perrette said. “I’m bursting with pride for my Dad and everyone involved here.”

Art Faulkner, director of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, said he was surprised by the crowd and initially mistaken about the reasons for its size.

“We came on (Alabama Highway) 9 and I started seeing all these cars parked everywhere and for a minute I thought all these people had come to see me and (Paul Perrett) and (Sen. Clyde Chambliss) and (Rep. Mark Tuggle). Then I realized they came to see Abby.”

Perrette quickly corrected Faulkner, shouting “Pauley!”

Chambliss echoed Faulkner’s sentiments about the crowd.

“I think I know what to do next time I have a campaign event to get a big turnout,” Chambliss said.

Tuggle focused more on the reason for the event.

“Watching a volunteer fire department grow and expand is something we don’t get to do that often,” Tuggle said. “A lot of volunteer fire departments are struggling. So I can’t think of a better way to spend my day than watching a volunteer fire department expand.”

In addition to Perrette, Faulkner, Chambliss and Tuggle, other special guests at the event included former Equality VFD chiefs, including founding chief T.J. Shockley, and firefighters from as far away as Tennessee and Honoraville, Alabama.

Perrett said the new firehouse would benefit the department’s 25 volunteers, including 15 trained as firstresponders and firefighters and support personnel. The new facility will provide a climate-controlled area to more safely protect the department’s equipment and includes an upstairs area for instructional training.

Perrett said the new building was the least the community could do for its dedicated volunteers.

“I get asked a lot, ‘Why do you guys do this?’ You know, I don’t have an answer for that,” Perrett said. “There are probably 40, 50, 60 firefighters who wouldn’t have an answer, either. But thank God they do it.”

214th Police Department. Alabama State Troopers, Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, the Alexander City Fire Department, the Alexander City Veterans Honor Guard and several elected officials.

214th Commander Captain Edwin Eiswerth explained the mission for the soldiers for the last year.

“After 11 months we have finally arrived here,” Eiswerth said. “It was just under a year ago, Oct. 15 that we departed Alex City and that was one of the most emotional goodbyes. It is a sacrifice. A sacrifice that all of these

soldiers are willing to make.”

From Alexander City, the 214th traveled to Ft. Bliss for a month and half of training.

“We arrived in Guantanamo Bay, Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day of all days,” Eiswerth said. “It was a stark reminder of the scarifies and missed holidays to come. Our mission for the next nine months, for 24/7 around the clock operations, was external security force.

We secured a large area that included detainee camps. These soldiers will tell you, it was not the most glorious. Some will tell you it was boring, but the over-

all scheme of our unit mission was a small piece in a larger puzzle. No matter what was thrown at us, the men and the women persevered through it all.”

Eiswerth gave his soldiers some advice before dismissing them to family and friends.

“Our mission is over,” Eiswerth said. “But as a reminder things have changed. Eleven months ago, you left your normal routine, your civilian jobs, your family, your friends. My last task for, show compassion and love, be tolerant and patient, and have fun and be safe.”

Alabama National Guard Assistant Adjutant General Major General Charles Gable spoke on behalf of the staff that remained in Alabama during the 214th’s deployment.

“Welcome home 214th,” Gable told the soldiers and community. “I am very proud of these soldiers because they are the best America has. They give of themselves and are an example for others. They are good Alabamians and we are proud of them. We are very proud of the job you have done, now there are babies to kiss and ball games to watch.”

am in a bit of a pickle of a quandary here. The sports editor has asked me to write Tuesday’s column (which is this column you are reading now…

Tuesday) on last Friday (which is, for me, right now… Friday preLabor Day).

Yeah… Here’s the thing about that and stuff: I won’t be able to write about anything that happened this past weekend because — for me — none of it has happened yet.

I know what my readers want; they want unique articles on sports happenings that are recent and relevant to this community.

Thankfully my readers are nice enough to take in my column each week despite its not doing those things.

However, it would be nice to talk about how BRHS got back on the right track with a win against Pelham…. Or how they are now floundering at 0-2 after a loss at Pelham.

It’d be great to ramble on regarding Oklahoma’s show of strength in a humbling of Houston… Or how Houston outgained, outmatched and outscored Oklahoma in an “OMG” outcome.

You would belly-laugh at my take on how Clemson stormed in Auburn taking no prisoners in a rout of the home standing Tigers… Or you’d proudly smirk as I penned an article about Auburn’s regaining its identity and while defeating the visiting Tigers in a feat I claimed nearly impossible in last week’s column.

You would roll your eyes as I bragged on the Tide and how it washed over USC in a game that was clearly on good on paper…

Or you’d chuckle because my column would seem like a Titanticload of excuses for why ‘Bama blew it against the Trojans.

All of those articles would have been Pulitzer worthy, I tells ya!

But noooOOOOooooo… The sports editor needs a column on Friday at noon (and it’s Friday 6:32 a.m. right now… For me…

If I don’t have anything for her The Outlook will start giving my Tuesday space to someone who wants to write more letters to the editors about guns or Trump or alcohol or Hillary or Trump and Hillary shooting guns and alcohol or something like that. Definitely some pressure here for me to get this column done.

I will resolve to remain calm though… Kinda. Not that you would know a difference because for you this problem happened four days ago so what do you care? It’s not you that has to come up with something interesting that has nothing to do with the best weekend in college football history without knowing any of the scores!

It’s li’l ol’ me.

So I have racked my brain to come up with something to write about that isn’t time sensitive.

Then I looked down at the bottom left corner of my computer monitor. It read, “Page 2 of 2…

Words: 476.”

Some 476 words (well now it’s actually 496 and that was before I typed 496)? That’s enough for an article.

Great Caesar’s Ghost, I did it! I cranked out an article in time for her deadline.

Yeah, it’s nonsensical and arguably the greatest waste of space in the newspaper since this same fish wrapper had that story from a Dadeville elementary school with the banner headline, “Student expelled for passing gas” (that actually happened by the way)!

But I did it.

Welp, hope yáll had a great Labor Day See you next Tuesday.

BRHS, Rebels get on track Young teams look to build on first wins STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

Getting off to a slow start is a tough thing for a high school football team.

Locally, Benjamin Russell and Reeltown know that feeling all too well. The Wildcats lost their season-opener to Clay Central on a least-second field goal, while Reeltown had gotten beaten by 19 and 27 in its first two weeks.

But Friday night, that frustration ended. Benjamin Russell topped Pelham on the road 42-21, getting their offense on track.

Reeltown rolled over Woodland 42-6 on the road.

Getting wins was good news for Wildcats coach Danny Horn and Reeltown’s Matt Johnson.

But both say they believe that they can still get better.

“We’re still not there yet,” said Wildcats head coach Danny Horn. “We’ve still got a long way to go. We made too many mistakes and had too many penalties. We’ve just got to try to get better every day.”

Johnson felt the same way.

“There are still some things we have to clean up,” Johnson said. “But to get a win on the road after the last two weeks, we will take it ago right back to work to get better.”

Now both teams try to build on that initial victory.

The Wildcats will get their first home game Friday when Chelsea comes to Alex City, while the Rebels will also be at home, hosting cross-county foe Horseshoe Bend.

ACMS volleyball starts off strong

The Alexander City Middle School Volleyball team is currently undefeated.

“Right now we are 2-0,” said Lady Wildcats head volleyball coach Deshunda Whetstone. “Awesome.”

That record comes after defeating Sylacauga 25-11 and 25-21 and Zora Ellis 25-8, 11-25, 25-22 and 25-13.

This year’s team is mostly young with only three returning players.

“But the new comers have come in and added to the chemistry of the team,” Whetstone said.

ACMS’ next home game is at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at ACMS gymnasium as the Lady Wildcats host Sylacauga and Auburn in a tri-match.

Sports briefs Alabama volleyball rallies for 5-set win over Virginia Tech

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico. – Alabama volleyball opened its weekend at the Puerto Rico Clasico with a tough five-set win over Virginia Tech Thursday night.

Alabama (4-1) and Virginia Tech (3-1) traded set victories throughout the match, sending both teams to a fifth set. The Tide led by as much as four points late in the fifth before the Hokies fought back within one late. Back-to-back kills by Kat Hutson and Krystal Rivers ended the set, 15-12, and gave Alabama the close win. Rivers accounted for 22 of the team’s 56 kills, hitting .326 along with 14 digs, good for her second double-double of the season.

Alabama rolls over No. 20 USC STAFF REPORT TPI Staff

True freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes to ArDarius Stewart and ran for two more scores as top-ranked Alabama began its national championship defense with a 52-6 victory over No. 20 Southern California on Saturday night.

The season-opening win came at AT&T Stadium — the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys — was also where the Crimson Tide started their 2012 and 2015 national championship seasons with victories.

Auburn falls to No. 2 Clemson

Deshaun Watson passed for 248 yards, including 174 to Mike Williams in his return from an injury, and Clemson escaped with a 19-13 victory over Auburn Saturday night.

Clemson struggled to put the away the opener even though Auburn produced little offense for much of the game while swapping three quarterbacks in and out.

Auburn finally got a touchdown with 3:22 left on a 9-yard direct snap run by Kerryon Johnson and Clemson’s failed fourth-down try deep in Auburn territory set up another shot with 40 seconds and 85 yards to go.

Sean White drove the offense to the Clemson 40, but two desperation heaves into the end zone fell incomplete, with the second getting batted around.

Elsewhere:

• No. 5 LSU again struggled on offense in a 16-14 loss to Wisconsin in a game played at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field.

Rafael Gaglianone kicked a 47-yard field goal with 3:47 left, and Wisconsin staved off LSU’s desperate lastditch drive. LSU’s frustration was on full display at the end of the game, when offensive lineman Josh Boutte was ejected for a flagrant foul after a blind-side hit on Wisconsin’s D’Cota Dixon after the safety sealed the victory with an interception with 57 seconds left.
