Earlier this year, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art sent out a call to schools all across Alabama, asking for submissions to be hung alongside the work of contemporary artist Frank Stella during the museum’s exhibition of some of Stella’s pieces. An abstractionist whose work spans over five decades, the art of Frank Stella has become renowned for its minimalism and use of geometric shapes and lines to evoke emotions from his audience. Following the judging process, six students from the Alexander City school system were selected to take part in the exhibition, including Russell Goree from Jim Pearson Elementary School, Tyler Carvin and Gamble Dennis from Stephens Elementary School and Brantley Calhoun, Andi Fox and Destiny Ray from Radney Elementary School. “It’s quite an honor to have them chosen for this,” said Karen Jennings in the city Board of Education office. “This shows we have good art programs in the city schools.” “This is a big deal. There is going to be a corridor in the museum just for student artwork,” Stephens Elementary Art Teacher Debra Griffith said. “The museum has an education department that does a number of outreach programs like this.” Between 50 and 60 Stellainspired artworks from students at the three schools were submitted

One of the latest traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian Institute, “Water/Ways,” will be opening in the lobby of City Hall in Alexander City on Thursday, Oct. 5. Early Wednesday afternoon, a truck arrived in the parking lot, hauling 20 cases filled with the exhibit pieces to be put on display. “The cases just arrived, and are currently sitting in the lobby at city hall,” MainStreet Alexander City Director Bre Smith said. “The exhibit is still set to open on Oct. 5.” When the cases arrived, a number of the firefighters at Station No. 1 volunteered their time and effort in order to get the cases, many of which measured five feet tall and weighed around 200 pounds, off the truck and into city hall Wednesday afternoon.
