Commission approves 2016-17 budget

The Elmore County Commission held further discussion on the county’s Fiscal Year 2016-2017 budget Monday before finally approving the budget with no further modifications.
Originally, the commission had considered the budget during its Sept. 12 meeting and voted to approve a one percent pay increase for county employees, which had not been placed in the budget as originally presented. During Monday’s work session dis-
cussion, only two items came up. District 2 Commissioner Trey Taylor made a requested on behalf of the Tallassee Industrial Development Board to fund $50,000 for a 400-foot extension at the Tallassee Industrial Park to bring a road to Gulf Packaging’s new building at the
park. District 4 Commissioner Joe Faulk wanted to confirm whether this money was for a project related to the industrial access grant for the IDB or whether it was a different project. Taylor said that the grant project was a totally different See BUDGET • Page 5
Chambliss discusses 2016 ballot measures

State Senator Clyde Chambliss was on hand Monday at the Elmore County Commission meeting to share with the commissioners the list of the statewide ballot measures up for vote in November and to offer his position on the issues presented. There are 14 proposed constitutional amendments, which will be on the ballot in November, they are: • An amendment to modify procedures regarding members of the Auburn University Board of Trustees. • An amendment to prohibit monies from the State Parks Fund, the Parks Revolving Fund, or any fund receiving revenues that are deposited in those funds from being transferred for another purpose other than the state park system. • An amendment to revise the

BARK IN THE PARK Pets, parents have a dog gone good time

A hot Sunday afternoon greeted participants and pets at the Human Society of Elmore County’s annual Bark in the Park event at Fort Toulouse/Fort Jackson. Estimates are that around 500 people par-
ticipated in the yearly event. The event was originally scheduled for Sept. 18, but rains forced the event to be moved to Sunday, the change in date though didn’t dissuade the throngs of participants who made the trek to the event. A number of local veterans across numerous branches of the military and from past and recent wars alike gathered at Elmore County Museum recently to share their experiences through the aide of literature and film. Their conversations ranged from humorous accounts, to the memories of things they experienced that deeply affected them. It began with introductions

Elmore County Sheriff’s officials reported a shootout involving three men where a Montgomery man was seriously wounded when he opened fire after being punched by a man described to be the boyfriend of the girl he was visiting. The shootout happened around 11 p.m. Monday on Marshall Road, three miles east of Wetumpka, said Sheriff Bill Franklin. In the aftermath of the shots two men were wounded, one in the thigh, the other with a chest wound, but all are expected to recover Franklin said. However, he said, all three men involved now have second-degree assault charges. Two have been detained, while the third, Jamie Shorts, 32, of Montgomery, he said was located Tuesday afternoon in Eufaula and was being transported to Elmore County Jail. See SHOOTOUT • Page 5
