Woman injured in vehicle repossession By MITCH SNEED Editor

An Alexander City woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon due to injuries that police say apparently happened while her vehicle was being repossessed. Just after 2 p.m. Alexander City Police and fire medics from the Alexander City Fire Department were called to K Street in Alexander City on a report of a pedestrian being run over by a vehicle. “It appears that the woman was struck in some manner as her car was being repossessed.” Alexander City Police Department Deputy Chief James Easterwood said. “It’s still an active investigation, but that’s the information that we’ve been able to get so far.” After arriving on the scene, first-responders discovered a woman who was injured, complaining of pain and bleeding on a foot and also pain in an arm. She was taken from a residence on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance. Officials said she was transported to Russell Medical, but due to health privacy laws, See ACCIDENT • Page 3

City’s paving projects nearing completion By MITCH SNEED Editor

Just as we usher in fall, a summer that will be remembered as the season of road work in Alexander City is winding down as well. Alexander City City Engineer and Public Works Director Gerard Brewer said that the finishing touches are being completed on several state and locally funded road projects. Brewer said that by the end of this week, only some patching and one long-term project remain active. Last week the process of applying the final striping and markings along Lee and Washington streets began. Workers were still on the job Monday and Tuesday placing highSee ROADS • Page 3

City storm drains marked to raise awareness By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer

Despite 11th-hour campaign visits by President Donald Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence to drum up support for Luther Strange, Alabama Republicans went to the polls Tuesday and picked former Supreme Court Judge Roy Moore as its nominee for U.S. Senate. Moore will now face Democrat Doug Jones in a special election on Dec. 12. “We have to return the knowledge of God and the Constitution of the United States to the United States Congress,” Moore said in a speech after Strange conceded at about 8:30 p.m. “I believe we can make America great, but we must make America good. And we cannot make America good without acknowledging the sovereign source of that goodness which is almighty God.” Final results were not available at press time, but Moore had 54.8 percent of the vote to 45.2 percent for strange with 92 percent of the precincts reporting. In Tallapoosa County ,Moore garnered 59.10 percent of the 4,987 votes cast to just 40.89 for Strange. Moore had a long list of endorsements in the final month of the campaign including campaign appearances from recently ousted former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Strange flooded the state’s airwaves and social media outlets with ads funded by the Senate Leadership Fund that attacked Moore and his wife, Kayla Moore, for taking salaries and spending on travel from the Foundation for Moral Law – a charity founded by the Moores. Strange, a former Alabama Attorney General, was appointed by then-Gov. Robert Bentley to the senate seat opened when Trump appointed Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions to the office of Attorney General of the United States. Strange finished second to Moore in a crowded field in the primary before losing to Moore in Tuesday’s vote. The winner of the December vote will serve until Jan. 2021.

Be on the look out for a gold colored markers in downtown Alexander City. The Middle Tallapoosa Clean Water Partnership has teamed up with MainStreet Alexander City to install storm drain decals throughout downtown Alexander City. “This is a project designed to bring awareness to our storm drains and the fact that water going through those drains flows untreated to creeks that flow to Lake Martin,” Middle Tallapoosa Clean Water Partnership’s Sabrina Wood said. “Only rain should be in the drain.” The gold markers are a reminder only storm water should go in them, See DRAINS • Page 3
