Elks host state barbecue competition to benefit Camp ASCCA

Christian author and Alexander City native Runas C. Powers III is bringing his latest book to the Adelia M. Russell Memorial Library Oct. 19. His latest, “A Right to Write,â€? includes poetry, personal prose and a gospel play by Powers. Powers hopes others can learn something from his writings. “They are about personal struggles and recovery,â€? he said. “I think everyone can gain something from it.â€? ourtney King already had plans for a barbecue rib dinner with family Sunday night until she agreed to be a judge for a barbecue cook off. King and four other judges slaved over sample after sample, bite after bite of barbecue chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. All told the judges sampled 64 different entries of protein prepared over the weekend to decide who would take home the grand champion at the annual Will Lane Alabama Elks Association Stoke and Smoke Cook Off Saturday and Sunday. “I won’t be eating dinner tonight,â€? King jokingly said after sampling her ninth rib. “I guess I will save those ribs for lunch tomorrow.â€? The championship race of the second annual Ducky Ward Memorial Soap Box Derby came down to familiar faces. The opponents have been rivals their entire lives living not next door but in the same house. Chariot Ward, 10, of Dadeville was the defending champion and brought her pink car with bicycle-like tires from last year back to the hill. Chariot’s brother Adam, 12, brought a new car from a kit with narrow tires. His kit was something similar to what is seen on the hill in races every summer at the national championships in Akron, Ohio. “I helped put it together,â€? Adam said. The pair had a few races against each other before the championship round and Chariot was hopeful of a win, but saw her brother had a faster car. “If I couldn’t win it, I am happy for him to have won it,â€? she said.
