night,” Meteorologist Jason Holmes with the Birmingham office of the National Weather Service said. “The worst of the weather in central Alabama will be Sunday.” Holmes added the two biggest issues residents of Tallapoosa County should see from the storm would be the rain and the wind, which could cause some tree limbs to fall and possibly knock out power in certain areas.
“There is also the risk of some isolated tornadoes throughout the day Sunday,” Holmes said. Starting early Saturday, area winds are projected to pick up from 10-15 miles per hour to 10-20 mph, increasing and reaching sustained wind up to 35 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph. “The highest wind period will be

Another local life has been lost on Highway 280 near Spring Hill Road. Alexander City Police Department Deputy Chief James Easterwood confirmed that 86-year-old Vernie Yates of Alexander City was pronounced dead at Russell Medical Friday morning after a two-vehicle crash at Highway 280 and Spring Hill Road. Yates was a passenger in a Ford Crown Victoria driven by her husband, according to Easterwood. The vehicle was making a left from the westbound lanes onto Spring Hill Road when it was struck broadside by an eastbound Honda Civic. “There is no traffic signal there and the speed limit is 45 miles per hour,” Easterwood said. “It’s still an active investigation, but it appears that the Crown Victoria turned in front of the approaching Honda.” Easterwood said that the drivers of both vehicles were also transported for medical care. It was a full house at the Alexander City Airport hangar as more than 150 women gathered in support of those diagnosed with breast cancer for an evening benefit Thursday. Purses for a Purpose was the first event of its kind hosted by the Russell Medical Foundation where women were asked to come dressed in their pajamas and dine on pizza from Lake Martin Pizza Kitchen and sip drinks provided by Ocie & Belles, all while buying
raffle tickets to win designer handbags. The purpose of the event was to not only to show support for community women battling breast cancer, but also to raise money to purchase new medical equipment for the cancer center. The foundation will be using the funds to purchase respiratory-gated radiotherapy, a technology upgrade for its linear accelerator. This type of technology offers improvement in the irradiation of tumor sites affected by respiratory motion such as lung, breast and liver tumors.
