In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Irma, relief supplies and volunteers wanting to help out made their way into Florida, offering what assistance they could in helping the state clean up and rebuild following the devastation. Among these aid workers was Tabatha Glassburn, the service center manager for the Alexander City office of the Salvation Army. Deployed to Highlands County, southeast of Tampa, Glassburn joined Salvation Army members from seven states across three divisions. “We were put on alert when Harvey was moving towards Texas,” Glassburn said. “When Irma hit, I was notified I was going to be deployed two days before I left.” The only Salvation Army member from Alexander City sent to Florida, she and two workers from Tuscaloosa met up with others from as See HURRICANE • Page 9

Moving steadily closer to its ultimate goal of $550,000, the Lake Martin Area United Way will take part in two fundraisers key to attaining the funds the organization is able to assist its agencies with. Monday, Oct. 16, Stillwaters golf pro Gabby Witherington will be raising money for the United Way through his second annual 100-hole golf marathon on the course at StillWaters, while the public is welcome to join in a night of Mardi Gras style fun during the fifth-annual Downtown Showdown Fashion Show on Thursday, Oct. 19. “I’ve always been active in the community,” Witherington said. “Last year, I heard Sharon Fuller speak at Kiwanis talking about how they needed help in reaching their campaign goals. I decided to make them my benefactor for this event.” See UNITED • Page 3

The lunchroom at Jim Pearson Elementary School was full of happy students and parents Wednesday morning, as the first-graders celebrated Donuts with Dad. The pre-K and kindergarten students were able to have their doughnuts and orange juice Tuesday morning, while the second-graders were scheduled for Thursday. “I’ve been here for seven years, and it’s been going on since before I got here,” Jim Pearson Principal Jamie Forbus said. “We try to break it down by grade so there will be enough room for the kids and their dads to enjoy each other’s company.” Just like the May event Muffins with Mom, Donuts with Dad gives fathers the chance to spend a little bit of quality time with their students and enjoy
a doughnut and juice together before returning to their more usual daily routine. “We try to have plenty of visitation time available to parents,” Forbus said. “Donuts with Dad and Muffins with Mom are two of our biggest visitation events, along with our instructional nights and Open House.” Along with the doughnuts and juice, the school had decorated one spot in the lunchroom with a backdrop and a “Donuts with Dad 2017” sign, allowing the children and their fathers to take a special photo together for the event. “We hear a lot of positive comments from the dads, and the kids are always excited to have their dads here,” Forbus said. Throughout the lunchroom, happy conversations seemed to come from everywhere, with children and their fathers sharing a
