Arrest made in Dadeville murder Suspect was on bond for previous drug and weapons charges By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
Dadeville Police Department investigators say the man suspected of killing a man and injuring another Thursday in Dadeville has turned himself in. According to Dadeville Police Chief David Barbour, Dazmon Notorious
Shaw, 22 of Camp Hill remains in the Tallapoosa County Jail. He has been charged with murder and bond has been set at $250,000. Shaw, who surrendered to police Saturday, is suspected of being the gunman responsible for killing John Farrell Adamson, 27, of Jacksons Gap after an early Thursday morning incident in
Dadeville. Barbour was mum about a possible motive in the shooting that also injured Jacksons Gap resident Gerald A. Haggerty, 37. Haggerty was airlifted to a Columbus, Georgia hospital Thursday morning. “He is still in stable condition,”

The fourth annual “Light Up the Night Against Crime” will be held at the Alexander City Sportplex tonight from 5 until 8 p.m. Allowing the public to become better acquainted with the members of local law enforcement and other first responder agencies, the event is a great way for members of the community to come together and take a stand against crime. “We are holding this in coordination with the National Night Out event. This is their 34th annual national event, but it’s only our fourth,” Captain James Orr of the Alexander City Police Department said. “It’s a chance for people to get to know us on a more personal level.” Members of the Alexander City Police Department, the Alexander City Fire Department, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department, several rescue squad groups and other first responder agencies will have tables set up at the Sportplex with information about them and what they do in the community. Some will also have their equipment on display and will

Fire strikes Chimney Rock Quick work of local volunteer firefighters prevents spreading By BETSY ILER TPI Magazine Editor
The quick work of Windermere volunteer firefighters prevented a Chimney Rock Island fire from spreading to Ridge Island Sunday
after a passing boater reported a wildfire near an iconic Lake Martin landmark. Russell Lands General Counsel Steve Forehand said the fire started on a very steep main channel section of Chimney Rock Island and burned most of the underbrush and trees there, but with the help of more than a dozen volunteer firefighters and six Russell Lands security officers, the fire was contained in fewer than five hours. Sometimes when a deal seems to be too good to be true, it usually is. That’s why the Alexander City City Council was all smiles when a bid from Emergency Lighting by Haynes of Montgomery to outfit the cars with equipment to get them road ready for $9,703 per vehicle came in. The voted to accepted the bid quickly. On Aug. 24, when the bid was approved, it was noted that the price was about $7,000 per vehicle less than the next closest bid. Alexander City’s Purchasing Agent Miles Hamlet even said at the time that he called Haynes and made sure that they were good with the bid and said they were. But when it came time to start the work and order the equipment, Haynes withdrew. Monday night the council rescinded the resolution awarding the bid and went with the second lowest bid. Mobile Communications, of Columbus, Georgia will now handle the work at a cost of $16,172 per vehicle. For the eight new Chevy Tahoe SUVs the total cost will be $129,376. That amounts to $51,752 than what the previous award would have cost the city. “Back then in August, we called them and made sure they knew that they had 72 hours to rescind the bid and they said they would honor it,” See COUNCIL • Page 2

Over the course of a fourhour period Saturday morning, Tallapoosa Ford welcomed the public to the dealership for their annual Drive 4Ur School event. A line of brand new Ford vehicles, including a Focus, a Taurus, an F-250 and both convertible and non-convertible Mustangs were arranged on one side of the lot, waiting for another round of test driving. Inside, a group of Benjamin Russell cheerleaders were carrying clipboards, helping people get registered to test-drive one of the vehicles and have their drive count towards the overall goal of $6,000. Alexander City Theatre II this week is thinking about Christmas with classic carols, lots of children, the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke and even Santa Claus. “We’re holding auditions for our Christmas production on Tuesday and Saturday, and in addition to the regular cast of 14 speaking roles for children and adults, we need chorus members, extras and a jolly old St. Nick,” said ACT II President Betsy Iler, who will direct the play. “This is a wonderful story with themes of See AUDITIONS • Page 11
