Great Bethel board of directors sue church’s pastor Suit alleges improper use of church funds by Rev. Dr. Emerson Ware Jr. By MITCH SNEED Editor
Former leaders at Alexander City’s Great Bethel Baptist Church have filed a civil lawsuit against the church’s longtime minister Rev. Dr. Emerson Ware Jr., seeking to recover money they claim he improperly converted for personal use. In addition to the lawsuit, the Alexander City Police Department served an arrest warrant for Ware on Friday. The harassment complaint was filed by one of the men who was a party in the suit. Renew Our Rivers cleanup set to be next weekend
Chief Jay Turner said Ware turned himself in and was processed and released. The alleged incident occurred the same day that the notice of lawsuit was served to Ware. The suit, which was filed on behalf of a group of the church’s board of directors, seeks to recover nearly $100,000 as well as complete records and accounting of charges dating back to 2001 made using a business credit card issued in the church’s name. Entering its 15th year, the Lake Martin Resource Association’s Renew Our Rivers is still going strong removing litter and trash from the shorelines and roadways surrounding Lake Martin. LMRA’s John Thompson explained some of the trash has been there for decades and the group’s efforts are finally paying off. “We are making a big dent in this, especially the old trash,” Thompson said. “We are making an impact.” This year’s event is set for Nov. 3 and Nov. 4. Thompson says volunteers are already lining up to help. “We have a lot of volunteers stepping up,” Thompson said. “We have a fishing group coming from Auburn. See CLEANUP • Page 9

The Brothas Keeper Motorcycle Club’s 2nd Annual Halloween Spooktacular at Strand Park for today has been canceled due to threat of weather. “We did not want kids sliding around and maybe getting hurt,” said Brothas Keeper member Fred White. “With the weather we thought it best to change plans.” White said instead the club would be handing out candy in the roundabout and on Main Street Tuesday during Alexander City’s community Trick or Treat from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Brothas Keeper Motorcycle Club is made up mostly of law enforcement officers.

Representatives from the Lake Martin Area United Way and a handful of the agencies affiliated with the United Way met in the conference area of the United Way office Friday afternoon for the latest update on how the 2018 fundraising campaign, “Team United,” was progressing.
