JACK’S COMING TO DADEVILLE By CLIFF WILLIAMS Staff Writer
It seems Dadeville is getting a lot of new things lately. The residents have voted in a new slate of council members and mayor. And Mayor-Elect Wayne Smith told the Dadeville Kiwanis Club Thursday
to expect something else new also. “We just got word last week that we have a new Jack’s coming to town,” Smith said. “It will be where the Twice the Ice is now.” The location is at the intersection of North Broadnax Street and Highway 280 on property owned by Wesley and Nora Bowden of Sylacauga.

Smith did not stop there with the good news either as he visited with the club to explain some of what he hopes to do in the next four years. “I am meeting this afternoon (Thursday) with a developer that is looking at a piece or property that is unoccupied,” Smith said. “They are See KIWANIS • Page 6

Laurie Barrett’s fifth-grade accelerated classes at Radney Elementary School over the years have spent time studying area streams, rivers and lakes, working to protect wetlands and get a better understanding of the environment. Over the last week, Barrett’s class continued that tradition by planting six cypress trees in a wetland area behind Russell Medical, not far from the school. The goal of this project is to increase vegetation in the area. Barrett thinks that it will eventually help slow down the water flowing from the parking lot into the sunken area between four roads that service the Russell Medical complex. “This is an area we kind of adopted See RADNEY • Page 3

A local business was awarded for its efforts placing people with disabilities in jobs throughout the county at a Governor’s Committee Luncheon in Auburn Thursday. Businesses from across East Alabama were recognized for their work. The luncheon was part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month and sponsored by the East Alabama Area Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. Though it was to recognize a meaningful matter the ceremony was conducted by a local comedian, Jody Fuller, who kept the tone light and the audience laughing.
Dadeville Mayor-Elect Wayne Smith speaks to the Dadeville Kiwanis Club Thursday and gave the club an outline of what the plans are for the first few months he and the new council will be in office.

ARISE has been providing transportation to the citizens of Alexander City for 40 years and the familiar white buses and blue trim have been a fixture in the area. But as part of a move to make the community more aware and make ARISE more visible in the community there is a new red trolley designed bus in the organization’s fleet. ARISE Executive Director Michael McKenzie said the new look is part of an effort to rebrand the organization and the new bus is one of several that will be joining the fleet in the coming years. “We want to draw a little
attention to ourselves and the service that we provide for the citizens of the area,” McKenzie said. “We’ve been here for 40 years and we have a very loyal group that uses us. But there is still almost never a day that goes by that I don’t meet someone who doesn’t know about us, or the service we provide. So we hope this bus will be the start of an effort to introduce ourselves to more and more people.” ARISE was started by Ben Russell as a referral service, it has grown into full-fledged transportation program, providing transportation for a Mitch Sneed / The Outlook fare for citizens in Alexander City, Daviston, Perryville, ARISE Executive Director Michael McKenzie gets ready to board the transportation cenSee ARISE • Page 3 ter’s newest bus, a red trolley-style look that he hopes will draw attention to the organization and attract more riders.
