A man accused of shooting a man to death as he drove down Highway 280 is due in court Dec. 13 for a preliminary hearing. Nicholas Seth Harrison, 21, of Valley was arrested and charged with capital murder, reckless endangerment and shooting into an occupied dwelling or

Court records show Harrison has retained attorneys Tim Davis of Alexander City and Victor Revill of Birmingham and it was Davis who requested the preliminary hearing. Judge Kim Taylor granted the request last week and set Dec. 13 for the hearing. Preliminary hearings are often used by defense attorneys to see what evidence the state may have against their client. It is also a time when details of

the incident and a possible motive are revealed so that a judge can make a decision on whether the case should go to a grand jury. As of now, police have not released many details other than how Harrison was identified See HEARING • Page 3

The Dadeville City Council continued to discuss several topics regarding progress throughout town during Tuesday night’s meeting. Despite Councilman Dick Harrelson’s absence due to his current hospital stay because of health issues, the council made good progress on the business of Dadeville. During the pre-council meeting, Police Chief David Barbour said there was an old paint booth area in a part of the old McKelvey Chevrolet building owned by the city. He said someone had approached him about wanting to obtain the curtain and rods in the booth, and in lieu of cash payment, would “purchase” the items by doing paintwork on one of the Humvees the Dadeville Police Department recently acquired. City Attorney Robin Reynolds said he wanted to see the curtain and rods, and would also like to have a written agreement between the city and individual wanting the items. Before adjourning, the council approved a resolution to consider bartering the curtain and rods, pending Reynolds’ examination See COUNCIL • Page 3

Mamie’s Place Children’s Library to present Creepy Critters show By DONALD CAMPBELL Staff Writer

Mamie’s Place Children’s Library in Alexander City will hold the Animal Tales Creepy Critters show Monday, Oct. 30 beginning at 4 p.m. Presented by the same group that brought the Animal Architects show to the library during the “Build a Better World” summer reading program, the Creepy Critters show focuses more on creatures that do not have the best reputation with humans. “They’ll be presenting spiders, bats, snakes and things like that,” Library Director Amy Huff said. “We held this event last year and saw a good turnout for it.” A highly educational experience, Huff said the show last year was so well received, the library wanted to try and have it again, ideally around the Halloween season.

Today’s

One of the overall goals of the Animal Tales Creepy Critters show is to help people better understand the role these creatures play in the world, no matter how less-than-beautiful their appearance may be. “People often think of bats as being these bad creatures who do nothing but carry rabies and always bite humans, but it turns out bats are actually pretty good to have around,” Huff said. “During the show we had this summer, I didn’t realize how fragile the tarantula really was.” Monday’s show is free and open to the public. Huff believed the main presentation would last around 45 minutes, which would give children a chance to get more up close and personal with the creatures being showcased. The Halloween-themed fun at
