New House Speaker McCutcheon talks legislative priorities By MITCH SNEED Editor

Mac McCutcheon, speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, said that budget issues and pressing infrastructure needs are the main concerns facing the Alabama Legislature now and in the near future. Tuesday at the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce’s fall quarterly luncheon, McCutcheon talked about everything from road funding to ethics reform to the 450 or so on hand to learn more about what to expect as a new House Speaker takes the helm.

McCutcheon was elected speaker of the house on Aug. 15, two months after a jury convicted former House Speaker Mike Hubbard on ethics charges, triggering his automatic removal from office. He defeated the Democratic nominee for speaker, John Knight of Montgomery, by a 68-28 vote. McCutcheon has served on the House Transportation committee and as chair of the House Rules committee.
