An alert resident may have scared off a would-be burglar Monday, but police are still searching for the suspect and ask citizens in the area to beware.

At about 8 a.m. Monday a resident of Pineview Drive in the Spring Hill Community called to report someone attempting to get into a home.

“The resident got everything right, she heard something, called us and went to check it out,” Alexander City Deputy Police Chief James Easterwood said. “It looks like the suspect realized someone was at home and tried to flee the area.”

F-A-L-C-O-N-S: Wellborn Industries produces massive letters for new stadium

While the Atlanta Falcons are off to a so-so start this season, visitors to the new Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta are treated to more than a sporting event; they are part of an experience team officials have gone to great lengths to create.

Right there along with state-of-the art electronics, massive scoreboards, kiosks, retractable roof, plush seating and the lowest concession prices in the NFL is an adornment created right here in Tallapoosa County.

The massive wooden F-A-L-C-ON-S letters that welcome fans in the team’s now-familiar flight style were hand-crafted by Wellborn Industries in Jacksons Gap and were on display in front of the stadium for the Dirty Birds first home game.

It all comes down to connections.

David Bell is an executive with Atlanta-based Orchestrate Build, a staging and production company that helps groups stage everything from massive parties and shows to grand openings and trade shows.

Bell said the project came down to knowing the capabilities that Wellborn has demonstrated in everything it does.

“We’ve done a lot of work with the Falcons and Atlanta United in the past, and with the opening of the new stadium, the team really wanted to go all out,” Bell said. “Orchestrate is in Atlanta, but I have a place on Lake Martin. So I was aware of Wellborn already, and through a friend, I was able to get with them and tell them a little about what we were wanting to do.

“They were excited about the opportunity, and being familiar with their work, I had no doubt that we would get

DEAR ABBY: I am a divorced and remarried man with two teenage daughters.

My ex-wife has custody of my girls one state away. I see them as often as time and the courts allow -- two months during the summer, a week during winter break, rotating Thanksgivings, etc.

Both of my daughters are failing miserably in school, but I am most concerned about my younger daughter. She is 13 and is rebelling badly. I recently spoke with the principal at her school and was told she puts forth zero effort. She arrives at school unclean, and fellow students have complained about the way she smells.

She blames her actions on my absence. This devastates me. I have always tried my best to make her understand that she was not any part of the reason her mother and I divorced. I try to call her often.

Those phone calls might become easier if you take a few minutes and make a list of topics you think she’s interested in, as well as questions to draw her out, before picking up the phone. Ask her what she THINKS about something or how she FEELS about things rather than yes or no questions.

Tell her you are thinking about her and that you love her every time you call, because that’s really the most important message you are trying to convey, and the one she needs the most to hear.

DEAR ABBY: I am a firsttime uncle of a 4-month-old nephew. My brother and sisterin-law are extremely close with my wife and me. We see them three or four times a week, and we are very fond of our nephew. I love being an uncle, and my wife loves being an aunt.

My sister-in-law grew up calling all her parents’ friends “Aunt Sally,” “Aunt Jenna” and so on.

Naturally, she plans to have my nephew call her friends “aunt” and “uncle” as well. I feel that being an aunt or uncle is much more than just a title. We are family; we are blood. I’m a bit put off when I hear my sister-inlaw say, “Here’s Uncle John,” when they see “John” only a couple of times a year. He’s not an uncle to my nephew! Residents ‘Fall for Downtown’

The streets and green space of downtown Alexander City were alive with music, wagon rides pulled by a horse named Elvis, children playing, specials and fun for all at Main Street Alexander City’s Fall for Downtown event Saturday. Children could paint pumpkins or roll them down a hill.

A wagon from Russell Lands provided carriage rides to all, while cool sounds were found along with plenty of vendors in Strand Park.

Obituaries Mrs. Rachel Marcia Branch Meadows 1946 - 2017 Funeral Service for Mrs. Rachel Marcia Branch Meadows, 71, of Dadeville, will be Monday, October 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Rev. Freddie Senn and Rev. Clinton Branch will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Tallapoosa County Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Langley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Meadows passed away on Friday, October 20, 2017 at her residence. She was born on August 25, 1946 in Langdale, Alabama to Preston C. Branch and Gladys B. Crowder Branch. She was an active member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and had served as the pianist for over 50 years. She retired from the Bank of Dadeville after 30 years of service. Rachel had a servant’s heart and would do anything for anyone. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, working in her yard and was the primary caregiver to her beloved Tom. Rachel loved her family very much and adored her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Tom Meadows of Dadeville; daughter, Melinda Meadows Brown (Ronnie) of Equality; grandchildren, Will Meadows (Bailey), Isabella Miller, Ryleigh Meadows and Yonna Hewitt; sister, Becky M. Hicks (Doug) of Opelika; uncle, Harry Crowder of Valley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ashley Meadows; and brother, Gary C. Branch.

unusual and the custom stuff. But to get a chance to combine football, which is another one of our loves, and our love of creating interesting things with wood, that was just a perfect opportunity for us.”

The Falcons letters were touched by just about everyone in the massive Wellborn plant. The work started with a state-of-the art computer design that was projected to make a passive pattern for each of the letters, which are almost 6 feet tall. From there, the materials were carefully selected to make sure they had the best quality and would be durable, yet not too heavy.

The wood for the frame was precision cut, sanded and assembled. Special high-density wafer-thin

plywood was used to create the outside of the letters.

A team of finishers then applied sealers and multiple coats of Falcons red paint and mounted the letters on bases to make sure they would hold up, no matter where they were displayed.

“It was really fun to see it all come together,” Curtis said. “We always feel like we do some pretty interesting stuff, but on this, you could just see the excitement in everyone when it came time to work on them. They really took a lot of pride in them, and I think it shows in how they turned out.”

Jason Pearson and Andy McAlister also played roles in the design and construction, but as Stacy Wellborn pointed out, everyone had a part in getting them ready.

“When it came time for them to go to a different department, you could almost see a gleam in their eyes,” Stacy said. “It’s something different and fun for sure, but knowing that they were going to be seen by so many people in a new stadium, that is really something they got excited about.”

straight-line edge design of the Falcons lettering was fairly simple, the massive GT logo for Georgia Tech was a challenge. The interlocking letters featured a ‘G’ that is oval with sharp curves. It took quite some time to figure out how to make that happen without leaving seams.

“That one was a real booger,” Jarod said. “But we worked and worked with it using several different layers and pieces and basically beat the wood into submission. It really turned out well. I’m pretty proud of that one.”

The plan was to have the Tech logo on display for players to sign and put on display at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

While there is no plan to abandon their traditional products for wooden logos, Jarod said he would love to do more creating of designs for colleges and professional teams.

“I’d love to do some stuff for Auburn or Alabama or any of the SEC or ACC teams,” Jarod said. “It was really a lot of fun. We’re even looking at different ways to do it and other materials we could use to make them pop even more. I’m kind of looking forward to seeing them on display myself. It will be kind of nice to look at them and say, ‘we did that.’”

According to court records, Bentley Cole Missildine of Alexander City died at Russell Medical Center on Dec. 27, 2014, shortly after officers were called to a home on Barrett Road. The Alexander City Police Department launched an investigation into the death.

As a result of the toddler’s unexpected death, an autopsy was performed.

Toxicology reports performed during that process were not complete until June 2015.

Those tests indicated the boy’s death was due to “methadone toxicity.”

The indictment reads in part, “Bethany Missildine… did knowingly, recklessly or intentionally cause or permit a child, to-wit: Bentley Cole Missildine, to be exposed to, to ingest or inhale, or to have contact with a controlled substance, chemical substance, or drug paraphernalia as defined by the Code of Alabama 1975, to-wit: methadone, and that exposure caused the death of Bentley Cole Missildine.”

Monday was spent seating jury and at 3:30 p.m. the state and defense got a chance to give opening statements.

Fifth Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Kevin Hall said that the case will come down to the facts and whether Missildine was reckless in her actions – having potentially deadly medication in a place where a child could access it.

Defense attorney Jason Jackson asked the jury to lay aside the emotional aspects of the case and consider the facts.

“This is a tragic, tragic thing,” Jackson said. “A 3-year boy has died. It’s emotional, no question. But is it a criminal act or a tragic accident? But once you get past that emotion and look at the facts it’s a tragic accident.”

The jury also heard from three witnesses Monday, two police officers who responded to the call and Todd Sassano, an Alexander City Fire Department Fire-Medic who rushed to the home and transported the child to the hospital.

Sassono recalled how he found the boy after arriving at the Barrett Road home after a call that a 3-year-old was in respiratory failure. He described at length how he and others worked on the child, struggled to find a place for an IV and did continuous CPR until they arrived at Russell Medical.

All three of the witnesses indicated that they were told the child had been put down for a nap and when they went to check on him a little more than two hours later he was not breathing.

The case is being heard before Judge Ray Martin and testimony is expected to resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Festival With tummies full children and parents next took part in a costume parade followed by the thousands walking amongst the campers for a campground trick or treat.

With campsites sold out for the weekend, park rangers directed guests at the entrance to parking for the day’s activities.

They said around 8,000 people had been through the park by 5:30 p.m.

Some 10 years ago, park staff came up with the idea of holding a fall festival and

inviting park visitors to take part in the festivities. And it has grown ever since.

The weekend festival complete with a trick-or-treat even has attracted a regular camping crowd with many changing their habits from camping on the waterfront.

“Normally, everyone wants to be on the waterfront,” Wind Creek’s Bruce Adams said last week. “With the festival they want to be on the main drag.”

Reminding the audience the beliefs he was expressing were his own and not those of the Air War College, the U.S. Air Force or the Department of Defense, Conversino said Russia remains a primary concern of the United States, even to the point that heavier military units were being returned to Europe and war game scenarios were being run.

He added the Russian view is that they were not beaten in the Cold War, merely that Moscow lost much of the power it had gained in the geopolitical arena over the course of 300 years, while they also have not come to terms with their Communist past.

“President (Vladimir) Putin is up for reelection in March of 2018, and you could have a ski hill open in July down here before he would ever lose an election in Russia,” Conversino said.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Conversino said the Russians have been studying the structure of Western media outlets and have used their research into both traditional and new media sources against the U.S. This includes the news groups RT (formerly known as Russia Today), IntheNow and Sputnik.

“Russia has become adept at playing the information game,” he said.

One of the key reasons Conversino felt Russia was becoming involved more and more with the United States like it has is because they are tired of Americans telling them how to live their lives.

Conversino said that, while there has been no conclusive evidence that Russia directly meddled in the 2016 presidential election, the Russians have been exerting influence in the United States in other areas, including financially supporting some of the many anti-fracking groups and the recently brought to light deal over uranium.

“They’re using the old-fashioned way of gaining influence: buying it. Our faith in government and media are at all-time lows, so Putin is plowing very fertile ground right now,” he said. “The goal is to get us confused and fighting amongst each other.”

Conversino also fielded a handful of questions from the crowd, including the latest on the situation with North Korea, the crisis in the Ukraine and the ties between Russia and Iran.

“The ties between Russia and Iran are fairly strong right now,” he said. “Iran is a distraction to us, which Russia sees as a good thing.”

He said China does not want to see North Korea implode and create a major refugee crisis on its border, but have explained to Kim-Jong Un that, should he start anything serious, North Korea would

be on its own without any support from the Chinese.

Since their independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Conversino said there have been three revolutions in the Ukraine, and that, in some respects, it is amazing the country is still standing.

“They are moving, albeit slowly, in the right direction,” he said. “The Ukraine could last if we don’t get short-sighted.

“Putin has created a sense of Ukrainian nationalism that really didn’t exist before.

If he truly wants to collapse them, he would get out of eastern Ukraine.

However, he may see doing that as a sign of weakness.”

The fall 2017 semester of Horizons Unlimited will conclude on Monday, Oct. 30 with special guest Dolores Hydock, in a presentation rescheduled from Sept. 11 due to Hurricane Irma.

Trump continues to isolate himself as a Party of One. He picks battles with the GOP about as much as Democrats do, alienating both. Then he laments that his legislation doesn’t get passed.

What we like about Trump, his anti-Washington “Drain the Swamp” crusade, has to be tempered with practical politics. Paraphrasing what Sen. Corker fired back, those in charge of the adult daycare at the White House had best show up for work. Otherwise, they are going to put those of us who care about good policy in the nervous hospital.

Trump can’t treat heads of state and senators like Bob Corker like he did Meatloaf on “The Apprentice.” Corker is the accomplished chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Trump mispronounced the African country of Namibia as “Nambia.” If Corker wants to trip him up, he should suggest Trump give a quick teleprompter speech on civil unrest in Niger and see how that comes out.

Trump is petulant, bullying, narcissistic and impulsive, and he is not going to change. We knew that. But that does not mean he is not right on the issues; he mostly is. I defy any Republican to tell me where the president has been broadly wrong on an issue. He has cut regulations, confirmed a great

Today the left is way far left under leaders like Bernie Sanders, Nancy Pelosi and Elizabeth Warren. For the kids out there, there once was a more subtle time in politics when you could call an opponent a “communist” and not really mean it — and it wouldn’t be taken as a compliment. Today’s hypocrisy has communist-leaning Democrats going after Trump for being too close to Russia.

Politics are clearly polarized now on issues, and everyone knows where they stand. You either want more government or less. More taxes or fewer.

More freedoms or fewer. The issues are clear. Politics are so bifurcated these days; if you publicly state that you are “undecided” on an issue, you must be a lonely shut-in and just want to make your phone ring.

Nancy Pelosi, de facto Minority Party Whip, talks of “bipartisanship.” Yet all the Dems vote in lockstep as their leaders tell them to.

Even the shooting at the GOP baseball practice couldn’t bring them together. But they did stand together for a moment of silence at the actual baseball game the following day. It showed the American people that Congress can cooperate and accomplish something as long as it is just

symbolic and meaningless.

The conservative issues, if well explained, will win the argument with voters. Getting the message around a “fake news” liberal media has been Trump’s forte. Trump explains issues like he’s talking to a group of union construction workers in their union hall.

Ineloquent, yes, but effective.

Both parties talk over each other on issues. Trump and the GOP want to let the free market work to reduce health care premiums and deductibles.

The Democrats wants to use government health care to cure their biggest health ailment: the inflamed redness in middle America.

Dems think bipartisanship is Obama taking $400,000 per speech from Wall Street firms he vilified. Republicans think bipartisanship is limiting wars to three at a time.

I am not sure we want both parties agreeing. The last time they did, we got the Iraq/ Afghanistan worthless trillion dollar wars that are about old enough to legally drink now, and the equally costly Patriot Act. The parties agreeing is like calling a psychic hotline.

It costs us a dollar for the first minute and then $1 billion for every minute after that.

In theory, both parties working together get results. Our biggest military success was killing bin Laden. Obama had the unexpected guts to send in Navy SEALs. But hunting and shooting bin Laden in the face was certainly an extension of the Dick Cheney Doctrine.

John Nolan deserving of honors

The Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities couldn’t have chosen a finer man than Mr. John Nolen for the Charles R. (Bob) Neil Lifetime Achievement Award.

The honorable former Housing Authority Executive Director Nolan went above and beyond the call of duty in Alexander City locally and on the state level.

He is what I call the “Cream of the Crop,” highly esteemed in Washington D.C. under Former U.S/ Representative George Andrews and began his career as Housing Counseling Advisor with the Dept. Of (HUD) Housing and Urban Development in 1971 in Jackson, Mississippi as stated by the Outlook on Thurs., Oct. 17, 2017.

Mr. John came back to his hometown, Alexander City in 1978 and served as our local Housing Executive for 34 years and was highly respect-

ed, and admired by so many.

His love for family, housing residents, board members, staff, local and state officials was very evident. Mr. Nolan’s doors were open to everyone, and he was helpful when needs would arise in housing and community.

Mr. John was concerned about education and kids staying in school and was very encouraging and helpful.

Children enjoyed visiting his office to receive candy out of his candy jar.

Mr. Nolan never got upset, angry nor uttered a mean word to any one; He cared and listened trying to resolve issues, concerns or complaints. Often, he walked the neighborhood to greet residents. The senior citizens enjoyed sharing with him.

Mr. Nolan met mandates, rules, laws and regulations, and would go beyond minimum requirements to make Alexander City Housing to become one of the best in the state.

Mr. John Nolan will be remembered by Alexander City Housing residents. Often times, his name comes up in meetings and the residents wants to know how he is doing. Mr. Nolan was a great asset to public housing and because of his caring heart and compassion that he has for people. He is well deserving of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr. Nolan wrote the vision for Alexander City Housing, made it plain that he, who read it will bring it to pass.

The vision is still thriving and will continue as executives to come will help to carry on the legacy that he started.

“Many are called, but few are chosen.” I believe God chose Mr. John Nolan to be an integral part of Alexander City Housing and all the areas that he served state and nationwide.

Great jobless Y stats a product of hard work

here was a time in the not-so-distant past when Tallapoosa County made unemployment headlines for some not so good reasons.

When thousands of textile jobs were lost, the county’s jobless rate surged well into double digits and stayed there for years.

But it appears that those days are behind us now.

Tallapoosa County’s September unemployment rate was 3.2 percent, which is the lowest on record, according to the Alabama Department of Labor.

The numbers show only 594 people were recorded as unemployed in the county in September.

That number is down from the 3.9 percent recorded in August and significantly down under the 5.5 percent unemployment recorded in Tallapoosa County in September 2016. There were 446 fewer jobless county residents this year than last year, according to Alabama Department of Labor statistics.

The good employment numbers were experienced all across the state.

Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted August unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in August, down from July’s rate of 4.5 percent, and well below August 2016’s rate of 5.9 percent.

The comparable national unemployment rate is 4.4 percent, up slightly from July’s rate of 4.3 percent. The last time Alabama’s unemployment rate was below the national rate was in October 2013.

Those kind of numbers are often dismissed as a product of good economic times. While that may be partially true, in Tallapoosa County there was a lot of hard work by a lot of people to make those numbers drop.

Leaders in Tallapoosa County, and all across Alabama, didn’t cry over lost jobs. They got attractive new jobs so our eggs would no longer all be in one fragile basket.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate the positive numbers. Those are great to see.

But when the backslapping is done, “let’s keep our foot on the gas,” to borrow a line from Alabama coach Nick Saban. Let’s keep up the good work rather than easing up and letting potential jobs pass us by.

Burglaries Patrol units flooded the area and found evidence that someone had been in the area and apparently fled into a wooded area behind the home. At least one home was burglarized, with the suspect gaining entry through a side window in the home.

Officers were going door to door checking with residents and combing the entire area.

A neighbor saw a man running from the area and grabbed a cellphone to shoot a picture and video of the suspect. Due to distance, Easterwood said it was difficult to make out much more than a general description.

Police described the suspect as being a black male, of medium height and build,

with a white stocking hat or possibly a white T-shirt covering his face. He is believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, Easterwood said.

Monday afternoon officers were called to at least two other homes where residents had arrived back from work to find that their homes had been burglarized. No details were available in those incidents at press time.

STORE BURGLARY INVESTIGATED:

The Alexander City Police Department is also investigating a burglary at a store in the Mill Square Shopping Center Saturday evening.

Easterwood said officers on routine patrol checking doors at businesses discovered

the glass in the door of the business to be shattered and broken out.

Store officials were altered and it was discovered that multiple items appeared to have been taken. The exact items reported missing were not released.

Police are using multiple sources to develop a suspect in the case, but no arrest had been made as of Monday afternoon.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE REPORTED:

Easterwood said officers were called Saturday to investigate a report of items taken from a vehicle while parked at a residence on Trenton Trail in Alexander City.

“Several items that were left inside a vehicle with unlocked doors were taken

some time overnight,” Easterwood said.

“We had two similar incidents in that area last week.”

Easterwood said that patrol has been stepped up in the area. He asked that if anyone may have seen anything or anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles in the last week or so to contact police.

Easterwood said that these incidents are often crimes of opportunity.

“We remind folks all the time to remove all valuables from vehicles and make sure the doors are locked,” Easterwood said. “Park in a garage if possible or in a well lit area. Those are all things that can reduce your chances of becoming a victim.”

“We’re very excited to have him come,” she said.

Jones’ campaign visit on Nov. 9 will still begin at 6 p.m. at the Charles Porch Center in downtown Alexander City and last about one hour.

“We hope to have a good crowd come out,” Gowan said.

At 45, it’s time to make some changes

Y

esterday, I turned 45 years old.

Forty-five …

Man, it looks worse when I spell it out like that.

Considering that my family history indicates I will live until I am 90 or so, I can legitimately say I have hit the halfway point. (Of course, if I keep writing accidentally incendiary columns, I may not even see 46.)

Anyway, this birthday has brought me back to reality. I think I need to make some changes in my life. Yeah, some really good changes.

I am going to get my tires rotated! I am going to see my dentist! I am going to start a retirement fund! I am going to get this tangerine-sized mole checked out!!!

Wait, what do you mean, I should have done those things a long time ago?

Well, I am not into “shouldas” right now; I am into “gonnas.” At least, when it comes to my attitude on sports.

For instance, I am going to be more sympathetic to friends who happen to cheer for Alabama’s rivals.

Auburn fans in particular.

After all, I lived through the Mike Shula era so I know what they are going through right now with Gus Malzahn.

Run-on sentence alert: It’s not easy rooting for your favorite team while simultaneously being completely aware that a change at the top is necessary for progress and knowing that change at the top will only come if your favorite team loses enough to warrant said change, so how can you root for them?

It’s such a conundrum and I fully understand the pain. It’s not a fun situation.

I am also going to quit complaining about kickoff times. No one likes to start a game at 11 a.m. or 8 p.m., but I have had an epiphany about football: We won’t have it forever so I better enjoy it now.

There’s no telling what the ultimate demise of the sport will be: Concussions, over-saturation, political issues — Who knows? I just believe that football, at least in its current form, will not be with us as long as we think.

Finally, I am going to quit calling the Alabama/ Tennessee game a “rivalry.” After what is now 11 straight wins by ’Bama, this series is only a rivalry in the same sense that vampires are a rival to sunlight.

The Volunteers are down on their luck and the Tide is riding high.

These fortunes will most certainly change one day.

However, UA’s current winning streak has lasted about 25 percent of my 45 years on the planet. Until Tennessee actually wins against Alabama again, it’s difficult to call this game a true rivalry anymore.

Now if you will excuse me, I have to go tell some kids to get off of my lawn.

Cade Worthy carries Horseshoe Bend to victory

All season long, Horseshoe Bend has become known for its run game. The Generals boast one of the best running backs in the area in Trace Meadows.

But it wasn’t Meadows and the ground game that set Horseshoe Bend apart from Fayetteville, 43-8. The victory was thanks in large part to Cade Worthy, who is the Outlook Athlete of the Week.

“You always want to be balanced or at least try to be, and sometimes when teams focus on one, you need the other to step up and that’s kinda what happened Friday,” Horseshoe Bend coach Josh Averett said.

“The run game also opened up a lot of the passing game.”

After a frustrating loss to Vincent, in which Worthy could’ve had a handful of touchdowns if it weren’t for a few dropped passes, he and the receiving corps made up for it big time against Fayetteville.

Worthy completed 11 of 16 passes for 254 yards and threw four touchdown passes.

“This was definitely what our team needed,” Worthy said. “I know some receivers’

Statistics: Worthy completed 11 of 16 passes on Friday night and threw four touchdown passes Worthy in Horseshoe Bend’s victory over Fayetteville. confidence levels were down; Luke (Yarbrough) had a few drops the week before, and that got to him, but I told him earlier we would get man coverage and he’s got the speed to break big plays on the outside. We didn’t have any drops from anybody, and it was the first time in a while that our line protected really well, and we knew we could silence what some people have been saying about us.”

Worthy and his receivers got the ball rolling quickly. Worthy then connected with Yarbrough twice over the course of the next quarter and a half, once for 22 yards and once for 23. Worthy’s biggest touchdown pass came late in the third quarter, when he hurled one to Jace Rodriguez for

a 71-yard score.

“I knew we were going to get man coverage, and they just needed to separate themselves,” Worthy said. “If we threw it, we would be able to beat them on the outside, and our line was protecting long enough to let the guys get some separation.

The easiest part is making the throw.”

Although Horseshoe Bend has been a run heavy team this season, that doesn’t mean Worthy’s job at quarterback is any less important. A sports addict, Worthy spends a lot of his free time analyzing football games and watching tape, so he’s the perfect person for directing traffic.

“I’m big about game

management,” Worthy said. “I know my role and kind of help take control of the offense. I get everyone aligned and tell coach Averett what I’m seeing they’re doing defensively, either in their coverage or what their line is doing.

“Whenever it’s my time to pass, I just do my thing.”

As one of many seniors, Worthy has also taken on a big leadership role this season.

“He’s the vocal leader,” Averett said. “He tries to keep everybody up and get the best out of everybody, and that’s what you want out of your quarterback. He’s great in the leadership role, and you want somebody that kids are going to listen to.”

Alabama is actually better in person than on TV Scott Hardy warned me that going to a game at BryantDenny Stadium might sway me right into the waiting arms of University of Alabama fans, and he was right.

I’ve been to a lot of sporting events — some big playoff games, a handful of huge rivalries and even some special events like the NHL’s Winter Classic. But there was no environment quite like my trip to UA on Saturday.

What’s even better about the environment surrounding the Crimson Tide is the team itself.

more intimidating than watching them on TV, and as much as I hate to say it, to all those Penn State fans cheering “We want ’Bama,” no, you really don’t.

Just take a look at Alabama’s massacre of Tennessee. The Tide gained a staggering 604 yards of offense. Six hundred and four. That’s inside. They

also held Tennessee to 108 total yards, meaning they had almost six times what the Volunteers did.

Alabama is holding its opponents to an average of 68.1 rushing yards per game this year. In most college games, a single player should be gaining more than 68.1 rushing yards, not an entire team.

We all know defense wins championships, and Alabama has redefined good defense.

On Saturday, the Tide had four sacks and nine tackles for a loss.

And offensively, they shouldn’t really be messed with either. I joked on Twitter, “Of

course if you’re Alabama and you go for it on fourth and goal at the 1, you’re going to get it.”

Twice, Alabama did, and twice, the Tide got it.

After the game, coach Nick Saban put all jokes aside about Alabama’s fourth-down success.

“When the ball’s inside the 1-yard line, I don’t know if there’s ever been a time when we didn’t go for it,” Saban said.

“And maybe one day we’ll get stopped.”

But realistically, probably not. It is Alabama after all.
